Rangers-Bruins in Review

  1. James G came pretty close to calling it. First shot for the Bruins goes in, except Marchand assisted on it, rather than scored it himself.
  2. Bad pass by Holden, communication issues between Holden and McDonagh, Pastrnak slips behind, Marchand finds him, 1-0. Uncontested. After watching it on replay, McDonagh floated to nowhere after the Holden turnover. Just both guys making a series of bad plays.
  3. This was just the first of many turnovers by the defense. They all really struggled with their passing and puck control, in my opinion, especially the Captain. They improved a bit as the game progressed, obviously, but still entirely too many unforced turnovers.
  4. JT Miller really showed his wheels in the first period, getting two breakaways. First he tries to go backhand shelf and just can’t get it high enough. Then he tries to bring it back forehand and gets stopped. He was the only Ranger who skated in the entire first period. He had a several other glorious scoring chances, especially in the third period from Kevin Klein and then later from Kevin Hayes. McIntyre was brilliant in stopping each one.
  5. McIntyre, the University North Dakota alum, was generally brilliant throughout this game. He got tricked on the Hayes and Pirri goals, but otherwise it was hard to blame him for anything.  In fact, the score could have been a lot higher.  Also, he’s got that great picture of his grandmother on his helmet. I love the Diet Coke detail.
  6. Execution through the neutral zone and the offensive zone was adysmal. Lots of wish passes, pucks bouncing over sticks, just no consistent pressure. Boston came out trying to stink out the joint to protect their goaltender, and for the first half of the game, they certainly accomplished their goal.
  7. Austin Czarnik, in the lineup in place of the injured David Backes, uses Skjei as a screen, through the legs where it takes a deflection back the other direction. Lundqvist was moving to his right as the shot came in straight after hitting Skjei. Lundqvist got a lot of it, but not enough, as it trickled in, 2-0. It was Czarnik’s first NHL goal. Lundqvist was fighting a bit throughout the game, but managed to come away with only those two goals against.
  8. Second period, the Rangers come out somehow flatter than the first. But Boston lets the Rangers back into the game by taking a series of penalties. The first one drawn by Pirri was definitely France in the Air. The PP improved each time.
  9. Boston got a little sloppy on its kill of the second penalty of the second period (third overall) and the Rangers managed to take advantage. First, Vesey made the heady play to pick out Stepan across the ice in the left point, who found Rick Nash had been abandoned by Torey Krug right near the goal mouth. McIntyre stops Nash’s deflection, but is helpless to watch Nash’s little chip shot skitter across the goal line. 2-1.
  10. Dangerous pass up to Fast by McDonagh. Fast makes a great play on it to chip it around the Bruins defenseman, all while being incredibly lucky not to be picking his teeth up from the ice after being served up like that by McDonagh. Fast gets it to Hayes, who is allowed by Krejci to go behind the net. Hayes takes advantage of McIntyre’s inexperience and banks it in off of the otherwise fabulous goaltender. 2-2.
  11. Boston continued its parade to the box and after a sequence of too cute short passes that almost resulted in a turnover, the puck ended up in the far corner. Miller makes a pass from behind the goal, diagonally through the Boston PK unit and found Brandon Pirri at the top of the right circle. What a release that guy has. 3-2. Easy to see how he ends up with Cy Yonug seasons.
  12. Third period, Colin Miller turns it over to Hayes at the Rangers blue line. Woof. Hayes skates around with it a bit, almost turning it over in the offensive zone, before retreating to the neutral zone.  The Hayes sends the puck in deep, rimming it around the boards where it comes too Liles in the corner.  He gets pressured from Pirri and sends it around behind to Colin Miller, who can’t handle it. Woof. JT Miller is there to pick up the giveaway and feeds Staal in the slot, who naturally shoots wide. Meanwhile, Liles left Pirri behind the net to go cover the front of the goal. Staal’s wide shot take a fortuitous bounce to Pirri all alone at the goal mouth, 4-2.  The rout was on.
  13. Just after making a brilliant save on JT Miller from Klein that I mentioned earlier, the Bruins come down the ice for a shot on Lundqvist that is stopped. Nash starts to skate up ice with the puck.  Bergeron thinks he sees a pass coming and tries to jump in the lane to intercept, but Nash just carried it up ice himself. Bergeron is now completely out of the play as the Rangers come down 3 on 2. Nash centers to Stepan, who sends it back to Nash, who sends it all the way across to Vesey for the slam dunk, 5-2.  Pastrnak checks Vesey into the boards after the goal, no call.  Good for Vesey for shoving him back.
  14. Carlo stops a puck outside of the offensive zone and can’t play it or it will be offside, possibly intentionally. So he just sits there and stares at it. Woof. Vesey takes it over and feeds Nash streaking through the slot.  Nash is then tackled by Carlo and the net comes off when they both slide into the goal. How was that not a penalty shot for Rick Nash?
  15. That Boston defense is mighty slow. Once the Rangers started to get through the neutral zone, they really exposed the Boston lack of speed.
  16. Girardi gets clobbered in the face by Pastrnak. Two minutes for check to the head. During intermission, Milbury says it was a clean hit.  Honestly, how does he fit his suit over the Bruins jersey? And of course, NHL Department of Limiting Liability won’t do anything about this because Girardi came back OK from the quiet room. A hit like that being excused with two minutes is all the proof I need to know Scott Stevens still would have been an absolute force in the NHL, even under today’s rules.
  17. The MSG crowd’s reverent silence was appropriate given the funeral-esque feeling of the day due to Carp’s untimely termination.
  18. I can’t believe how hard it was to blog and watch the game at the same time. Unreal.
  19. I told my wife that I was doing this blog and all she did was laugh. The last time I tried my hand at blogging, it was so boring to her that I used to read it to her when she couldn’t sleep and she was out before I would get through the first paragraph.
  20. I was going to write a bit about the effect of Buchnevich’s return to the roster, but Jooris’ separated shoulder likely will serve as a stay of execution on any roster move.
  21. Thanks again to all of you who have found me and have participated, especially the man himself, Carp. Your participation is what makes this worth it.  And Carp, like I said, I’m just keeping your seat warm until you’re on your feet again.

My Three Rangers Stars:

  1. JT Miller
  2. Kevin Hayes
  3. Rick Nash

Your Three Rangers Stars, unofficially:

  2. The early goals are a real problem despite the 5-2 record. The defense certainly looked like they were fighting the puck to start and settled down just enough once the Bruins couldn’t clog up the neutral zone any longer.
For once they took advantage of an inexperienced goalie who really didn’t play that poorly. What I like most thus far, is this team seems to have just enough to it that they do not get shook when they’re trailing. Don’t know if it’s youth, confidence, moxie or whatever but it’s a good quality for a team to have. It’s also always nice to see the PP work as an advantage and not a disadvantage.
Still think their biggest problem is the need for another dman. Lindholm just signed w/ Anaheim on a 6 year 5.25 per deal so someone may be on the move from that Ducks blueline.

  3. Carp, all I’m doing is giving everyone a home until you find something else.

What do you guys want from me? Do you want me to try and stay objective like Carp or should I offer my own opinions? The real catch is I *hate* fan blogs. I also usually, but not always, disliked guest blogs. Yet, here I am at the helm of fan/extended guest blog. So tell me what you want to see from me.

Also, as I learned yesterday and last night, this is time consuming. I know for a fact there will be days when I am unable to put together the game review. Any volunteers to help fill in when I need it?

  4. Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking had this to say about some of the Rangers:

Brandon Pirri – Scooped up as a bargain free agent this summer by the Rangers, Pirri scored a pair goals in a 5-2 win over Boston, giving him six points (4 G, 2 A) in seven games. Since the start of the 2014-2015 season, Pirri ranks 25th in the league in goals/60, and yet was inexpensive to acquire from Florida at the trade deadline last year and cost $1.1-million on a one-year deal in the summer.

Mats Zuccarello, Mika Zibanejad – The Rangers duo was locked in its own end (2 for, 15 against, 11.8 CF%, 0-8 scoring chances) against Boston.

  5. I don’t want anybody named “Dougie” on the Rangers. Who names their kid Dougie anyway? Pasternak has a hearing with the NHLDOASFHS (NHL Department of avoiding suspensions for head shots), as he should. Rumors at the Honda Center last night that the Ducks were trading a D man to Toronto for JVR. Anaheim signed Lindholm this morning. PK Slewfoot was a non-factor and got benched last night, and Pekka Rinne was a human sieve.

  6. I don’t know how much cap space Anaheim needs to clear, but if I recall Stoner cleared waivers already. They could just send him down. I believe his hit is 3.25.

  8. The Chartsngraphs Club had an absolute field day when PK was traded for Weber. That was their effing Super Bowl. There was also that analytics guy who Montreal fired because he freaked out after the trade, saying Weber was terrible. Well, small sample size, but Weber’s basically carrying Montreal on his back, and Subban is getting benched already? Heh.

  10. Funny story a couple years back my landlord wanted to make a statement – he didn’t want the neighbors snow on his property. we had a small road between our 2 buildings, everytime it snowed the neighbor would clear it off and put the snow up against both buildings. Until the last day, the wet sloppy snow, pushed up against the building on a Saturday, he took his loader scooped it up and dropped in right at the neighbors doors enterence to his business. The temps drops, and freezes hard by Monday morning. I shake my head and laugh, but the neighbor stopped putting his snow on our property after that.

  14. Actually, for his sake, I hope he doesn’t. He needs a lot of minutes. The AHL was where he should have been last year. He still needs it. If he isn’t claimed, he will be a UFA at the end of the season and can start over somewhere else.

  15. James, I can see something happening around the deadline. We just don’t have the assets to give the Jets what they want for Trouba. And while Trouba is dangling, we can’t match up while other teams think they can get Trouba for whoever they’re dangling. I think at the deadline, when we have a ton of pro-rated cap space, we can get Shattenkirk as a rental. And if we play our cards right, maybe we make some room and sign him.

  17. I guess just ripping the bandaid off, ILB. At this rate, he wasn’t getting the games necessary to avoid being an UFA in the offseason. It would take 2 defensemen going down for him to get a look. I’m guessing whoever the resident capologist is has a pro-rated number in mind for potential deadline moves, and a corresponding date where carrying an 8th defenseman needed to stop.

  18. Clendening= whipping boy ’16/’17. Dave I get what you’re saying. And while I don’t think Trouba is attainable and he may very well sign now that Lindholm is locked up and he’s the last man standing. That said, Whether it’s Shattenkirk or Vatanen or some other defenseman my hope is that it’s just not another depth guy who is weak on the defensive end of the puck.

    Like

  19. ILB- I think it’s cap space but I also think it’s as simple as AV is not going to use this kid on his team. We discussed it all summer and regardless of Beukaboom or Gorton, this is AV’s team to coach and he’s going to have final say on who plays and who doesn’t. I’ve been in favor of Dylan playing and hopefully improving but I just don’t see it happening.

  20. It’s just seems to be a lot of coincidence with this waiver. Jooris went on IR. Maybe they were waiting for Buchnevich to be reactivated and wanted to waive Jooris. Now they can’t. The other coincidence is that Anaheim signed their best D-man. Maybe a trade is coming and they needed another roster spot? Although I think if that’s the case, more bodies will be going the other way than coming back.

    Like

  21. Oh I agree but I think Clendening will be playing more this year, ILB. AV takes a liking to guys that fit his system no matter their flaws. Who was the guy that was tearing into me for saying Skeji was going to have a regular role on the team btw?
I feel like this defense may be on borrowed time to an extent. You saw what happened when Boston took away the neutral zone for a while and we know full well that other teams will do so and do it better than Boston did. When that happens the blueline is going to implode. At best you hope they don’t commit the unforced turnovers and stand up in front of their net. Before we get to that point though, it may be in Lundqvist’s best interest to start making the first save of the game before he sees the opponent’s second or third shot on goal…

  22. Obviously they didn’t want carry extra dead cap space so have more available later on or for something bigger.

I am not a mcilrath lover like most. He will get claimed. I would have kept him though over clendening.

  23. By the way, McIlrath becoming a Group VI UFA next year is not a forgone conclusion even if he doesn’t play 42 games. He is on 1 year contract, so can sign him to an extension any time in January. Why would he sign, is a different question.

    Like

  24. I don’t think he would sign unless something happens and AV isn’t the head coach here any longer. Not sure if there’s some kind of a trade the Rangers are working on either. Probably safe to say they want Trouba and that the price is a high one

  25. Ms. Doodie, I’m with the rest of the gang–write what you want, be yourself, don’t try to be Carp. There’s only one of those.
Confused about Trouba–not sure what the attraction is there other than his availability. Don’t see how he makes this very good team better.
Sioux, happy you’re dealing with moldy minds–I’m beginning some “826” volunteering next Monday.
Need to see more than 5 games from Clendening before a waive decision. Seems like a solid #7 option to me, and there will likely be injuries on defense, especially with the three geezers.
Gotta run–on the list of things to do: early vote for Doodie!

    Like

  26. Yeah, no chance in hell McIlrath would’ve signed an extension with us. He’s hoping to catch on with a team that’ll give him a regular spot on the 3rd pairing. Or if interest is low, he’ll at least sign with a team that might insert him into the lineup occasionally.

It bugs me that AV made a point, several times, of saying how he doesn’t like to leave players scratched for too long, and will find a way to get them in after 3-4 games. Well…that never worked out in Dylan’s favor.

  27. If he gets claimed it’s on the organization and they get what they deserve as far as any possible hole in the roster down the road or Dylan’s development elsewhere.

    Like

  28. Yes, certainly a good chance he clears. Nobody would claim him based on his performance. It would be based 100% on his potential. And if he was left handed instead of right handed, I’d say that the odds were better than not that he would clear.

  29. Saw Shea Theodore play last night again. The kid is a stud, and scouts think that the kid Montour playing for the Ducks AHL team is as good or even better. They have an insane stockpile of D prospects. Josh Manson is also a good player and is a regular on their D. They could part with Vatanen or Fowler and not miss a beat.

  30. ILB – the Hertl thing was actually kind of strange to me, tbh. It went against the reasons I liked McIlrath in the first place. Many were scared that he couldn’t be trusted to keep himself in check. That he’d be an automatic penalty machine if other team’s were smart enough to poke the bear. And pretty much all last season, he showed that he didn’t necessarily need to be that player. And then for some reason, in his first chance this year, he went ahead and did something kinda dumb.
Anyway, I would’ve been interested to see how he rebounded from that. But he didn’t get the chance.

  31. Don Clendening (The Don) has outplayed Hold On! (4th Round Pick) and is a PP QB which if we can use properly (though see AV with Yandle on 2nd unit last year..) the PP will be clear and strong. He seems to be the type of Dman AV wants in his Go Go system so not sure why Hold On! gets to play on his off side. Not a huge fan of The Don and thought McBeast should have been given more TOI as he is not a worse D-man than Done G and Hold On! (faint praise at best)
    .
While Done G is man amongst men, I am not the only who thought (hoped?)an extended stay on IR would help him and the team after that hit.

  32. Anaheim might not have to make a move to clear cap space at this time. They have Nate Thompson and Simon Despres on LTIR and their combined salaries comes to about $5.3 million.

Doodie – You might want to see if you can get verified at the NHL and gain access to the NHL Media site. I got an account many moons ago because of my Blog. As for the game review style – do whatever makes you comfortable. You can always mix in your opinion. Almost 19 years ago I filled in as a game reviewer on a long defunct Rangers listserv. I did it as a straight game story with no opinion, which was the opposite of what the regular review did. At the end of the recap, I listed about 10 or so personal observations on the game – a little something I called Ranger Ramblings. a blog owner on the list saw it and the rest is history in terms of writing.

Hmm, does that mean Carp and Uncle Larry are stealing from me?!? (HA HA HA) 🙂

  33. Norm, While this team is very good I don’t know if we could specifically call the defense the same. Don’t see how anyone wouldn’t be interested in Trouba in a league where well rounded dmen are a hot comodity.
Granted I didn’t know much about him until his availability and “saga” surfaced but Here’s a 22 year old kid who’s 6’3 200lbs and skates really well. He can move the puck but he’s also solid in his own end. Someone like that is usually a good fit on all 30 teams in the NHL. As for the Rangers specifically, they’re weak on the right side where he plays and he’s a righty shot which they don’t have enough of on the blueline. IMHO he’s the ideal partner for McDonagh on a long term basis

  34. Re Trouba
Given our RD options are Ein Kleiner (still looks hurt), Done G (oy), The Don (Charmin) and Off Side 4th Round Pick, the need is somewhat obvious along with no RDs in the system to help in the next 2 seasons. (Shatty UFA?)
    .
The dollar demands $&M+ are meant to scare Winny. His peers have gotten $5M per recently but do NOT want to part with any young productive forwards (THE, MIller Time, Zika, VC). Winny wants an LD in return and, yes, I would move Shea Butter because of the Staal contract and Graves coming up.

  35. On the Hertl incident- I think what you saw there was a young dman desperate to find a way to make an impact and show his value to the team and it backfired. Not much more to it. I think that’s been his MO since training camp knowing that he’s up against a coach that doesn’t put much stock in him.

  36. So Jooris is out “indefinitely”. To me that screams at least a grade II or grade III seperation and that should make it a no brainer to put him on LTIR

    Like

  37. I hope McIlrath gets claimed by someone who will let him play. With AV having job security, that won’t be here. Watch the Islanders or Devils claim him and he beats up Ranger forwards for the next few years. When Rafael Diaz plays instead of you after not playing for most of the year, the handwriting is on the wall.

  39. They don’t have to wait, Doodie. Once on IR, a player isn’t eligible to play for at last 7 days. Sometimes they do it retroactively if, for example, they need to recall a player, and know that an injured player will be available in less than 7 days.

  40. ILB (re: McIlrath vs Simmonds) – Agreed, but this is why I wanted to see how he rebounded. Can’t fault him for getting frustrated. By all accounts, he came into this year kind of being the guy who would spell Girardi and get into a solid 40 games. Hey, if Clendening fits AV’s style more, there’s just nothing that can be said or done. It is what it is

got a feeling miller gets moved in a deal for trouba. some type of package. just my opinion.

this defense has a whole cant last long term over 82 or a playoff run

  42. Stranger Nation – I would move Skjei in a second if he was the centerpiece of a Trouba deal. But that’s just not going to be enough. If ‘peg wants a lefty who is comparable to Trouba, and there are guys like Fowler, Hamilton, etc out there…we just don’t have the assets without raiding the bare prospect/picks cupboard. Which is off-limits as far as I’m concerned. We do have an abundance of skilled forwards, so I could see Miller and Hayes being dangled. But these are players the Jets don’t exactly need. So it would either need to be a 3-way deal, or it’s just a no-go for the Rangers.

  48. The league is going young up front. You cannot trade a very good young forward in a deal for Trouba. If they would take Zucc and Skjei, you do it. I do think Trouba is going to be a stud though.

    Like

  49. Winnipeg never makes that deal. There is no way they take on that much in contracts – never mind Nasher’s limited NMC.

Doubt the Ducks take Zucc because his cap hit is $500,000 more than Fowler’s hit. Not sure if Jets would want to add Fowler’s cap hit either.

Any deal for Trouba starts, at least, with Skjei (not that much of a problem), a Rangers first rounder (now we have a problem) and a prospect depending on how high the Jets are on Skjei. I can’t see Winnipeg making a Miller or Hayes being a main focus of the deal because they have a nice cache of forwards.

    Like

  50. Winnipeg’s issues lie on the blueline and in goal (until Hellebyuck finds his game). They have Laine and Wheeler on the right side. I don’t think they want Zucc for their third line. That said, I’d part with Skeji knowing that Graves is coming down the pipe line. I think that makes the Rangers a better team. And at this point with Vesey and Buchnevich in the mix along with what looks like an improved Hayes, I’d part with a first round pick either this year or next.

    Like

  51. James, I’m pretty sure the asking price from Winnipeg was basically “a lefty Trouba.” Can’t remember where I read/heard that exactly, but it was out there and confirmed as far as I know.
Stranger – I just don’t think Skjei Guevara would be enough. And since they’re loaded at forward, I just don’t see them being interested in Skjei plus a forward sweetener (even if it is Miller or Hayes).

I’m also working under the assumption that 1st rounders for the next few seasons are untouchable assets. But then again…this is a young stud defenseman who could be our #2 for 10-12 years.

    Like

  52. Trouba may not get traded, but he’s not going to play for the Jets. If the Jets don’t want to get something out of a good asset that’s on them.

  53. I would be fine moving a young forward for Trouba. Unfortunately we’d need to give quality to get quality. If a deal came and we had to pick a young forward to put in the package, I’d be fine if Hayes or Miller were included. I’d hate to see either go (even though I’m not exactly the biggest believer in Kevin Hayes), but with only 2 games under his belt you can already tell that Buch is a player, and Vesey’s a stud. Zucc, Step and Kreider are signed long-term, and you can bet Zika will be as well. If one of Hayes or Miller goes, you still have the one that didn’t, so we’d still have Hayes/Miller as a top-6 caliber player on the 3rd line. And I haven’t even mentioned Nash. You also have Brandon Pirri who looks like a steal.
We have a rare opportunity to deal a good young forward with a ton of trade value and possibly not even miss a beat.

    Like

  54. I think you have to look at it as what makes this team better. Put Trouba on our blueline and take away Skeji. Are we better? yes. Put Trouba there and take away Skeji and Miller. Are we better? it’s close. but are we more balanced? absolutely.
honestly the more every discusses it the more I realize the Rangers just don’t have what Winy would want for the guy. The Blues would be more likely to do a deal for Shatty and considering what the Rangers could offer up.
Someone like Miller could fill the void left by Backes.

    Like

  55. The decent thing to do would be to trade McIlrath if anyone will take him. The business thing to do is keep him around in case two guys get hurt, entirely possible. The idea, though, that he has not gotten a fair shot, I think is… oversold. He got 34 games last season and did nothing in them to hint that he’s any kind of game-changer, and he clearly does not fit in with the fast game this year’s team has bought into. He’d be fine in an old-style, clogging team. And the Rangers may already have a better version of him in Graves anyway.

  56. The thing is James, I wouldn’t give up Miller for Shattenkirk. Because there’s no guarantee we can sign him. Sure, he’s a NYer and a Ranger fan and might take a little less to sign with us, but what if we can’t make the space? Miller’s too high for a rental. I can see a prospect and 3rd rounder that becomes a 2nd if he signs with us. Something like that.

But I tend to agree with you on Trouba – we just don’t have what they want. It’s not a good fit as a trade partner. The only way I see is if, like others have said, we include a team like Anaheim. Anaheim might want to move a guy like Fowler and would prefer cheap young forwards. We have cheap young forwards, but we’d prefer a righty instead of Fowler. Winnipeg wants a solid lefty dman back for Trouba. Am I the only one hearing Pee Wee Herman singing the connect-the-dots song?

  57. Don’t think McWrath is a top 4 Dman now compared to the entire league, but NYR traded a 4th round pick to the Avs which are defensively challenged for a top 4 guy who stinks. Dylan is a inexpensive 3rd pair guy on this team.
    .
The fact Vino has Don Clendenon on the bench and playing Hold On is all you need to know about personnel deployment on D. This same coach trotted out Done G and Dam Boil last year with horrible results.
    .
Reality is he’ll pass through waivers and be in Hartford all year. It’s not business, it’s personal.
    .
At least the kid is classy: “I’m never going to blame this on the coaches. This was all about my play and not earning a spot in the lineup.”

  59. I just found out (this will tell you how busy my day has been) that Clendening has the NUMBER ONE Corsi (CF%) of all D-men in the NHL. Now if someone can tell me what the fork that even means…

  60. Norm, when a player has more corgis than other players, we can talk about a lot of things. We can talk about driving possession, moving the needle, Fenwicks, those graphs where there are a lot of circles bunched up that are supposed to tell you that Anton Stralman is the greatest, etc etc etc.

    Yeah I have no clue.

  61. Though in all honesty, advanced stats are decent enough, but personally I think to get a full picture of a player or team, you need to look at their normal stats, fancy stats, and give them the eye test.

I like the fancy stats for identifying bottom-of-the-lineup gems who you might otherwise be overlooked.

But the fancy stats have also been saying that Dan Girardi has been an anchor on this team for half a decade, if not more. Sure, the man is pretty used-up now, and especially last year? But before that? Not the most well-rounded player for sure, but he effectively shut down top players in the league for YEARS. If I’m watching Dan Girardi, circa 2014, keep Alex Ovechkin in-check and off the score sheet for the entire game, block 3-4 shots, put in 25 minutes and come away +1, but there’s a fancy stat that says that he has negative corgis because the other team generated more shots and had the puck more, and because of this he sucks…I have a problem with that.

It’s also kind of telling when the stat that’s supposed to be the friggin God equation of measuring a player’s worth has Adam Clendening on top. We’ve all watched him, and the opinions fall between “He’s alright…I guess we need someone on the 2nd unit PP” and “OMG He’s Awful.” So, like I said, it’s a nice tool to use and try to uncover hidden gems (and I do think Clendening, given some games and deployed correctly, can be very useful and effective), but it’s not the be-all-end-all of stats. All stats + eye test = truth.

  62. Tomb, I happen to know the author of that blog 🙂

DaveB- I tend to agree with you about Shatty. In all honesty I didn’t want him when they were talking about him coming here over the summer either. We don’t need a Yandle 2.0 to go down.

As for Clendening here’s the most telling thing about him- he’s passed through Chicago, Edmonton, Vancouver and Pittsburgh. None of those teams wanted him and all of those teams could have benefited from some solid young defensive depth. Now maybe in AV’s precious system he’s going to “get some looks” and be a solid depth guy and I’m fine with that. But I’d be shocked if he were more than that at some point in his career.

  63. So sorry to find out what happened to Carp!! Lohud management are idiots! I’m so glad we used to throw away the extra Distorted Repatch (Carp will get that reference) papers we didn’t deliver back in the day. I don’t post very often, but have and will continue to read everything Carp writes. I know he will land on his feet at a much better publication. Best of luck to him!

Good job and thanks for putting this together Doodie!

  64. If Mcilrath gets claimed and the Rangers trade for Fowler at some point, you may have to chalk it up to the hockey gods setting things right from the 2010 draft..

and I dont have to tell anyone that bunch of teams passed on Tarasenko. Even Blues passed on him the first time around.

  67. That 2010 1st round was weak save for Segin, Tarasenko, and Kuznetsov at this point. Granlund, Schwartz, Hayes could be good.

5 of the first 6 picks were traded, the draft included Etem, Fowler, McIlwrath, a former figure skater and some big stiff who went to school in North Dakota

  68. Stranger that year the Fighting Sioux had 2 players go in the 1’st round. Forbort was picked and plays for the Kings. And Nelson was drafted like Kreider was….. straight out of high school.
    .
Tarasenko was the best player in the U18 tournament in 2010, and his team lost the GOLD medal to the USA. Perhaps there was a home ice advantage that night, I was there.

  69. Holden doesn’t suck by the way. Much Like Klein, the guy isn’t a top pair dman and looks out of place when deployed as one. If they wind up with 4 Dmen better than him by spring and he’s the #5 I say they’re in pretty good shape.

  71. Great write up Doodie , I don’t know how you can keep up ? Carp was getting paid to write and had IT techs doing the blog stuff that went downhill then ultimately everyone getting lay offs . Your blog is awesome!

Rangers win Rangers win !! First place in the east , did you expect anything less?

  72. I think the ideal thing for McIlrath would be to clear waivers. This way he gets to play/work on his game in a system that he knows then sign with a new team next summer that he has a decent shot of getting a top 6 spot straight out of camp. His worse case scenario is getting claimed to be 7th d-man on another team where he doesn’t know the system, staff etc and withers.

  73. Just found this searching on the Carp news. Never amazes the stupidity of media companies – yes, axe the things people actually come to read, brilliant! Big kudos on setting this up for everyone while Carp is in a holding pattern looking to land a new gig. Maybe we can convince nbc to replace Pierre with Carp….

  74. Holden will be/is just fine. Skjel is far more a problem/liability than Holden.

I like mcilrath and I think it is horrible asset management to just waive him and lose him for nothing (I know there is potential to lose him for nothing as a free agent in the summer), but it seems premature to waive him now.

Of course with dimwit as coach, it’s probably best he gets claimed.

Guess we’ll find out around noon eastern.
