The Undertaker. It seems fitting that what feels like the second obituary of this young blog is about the Undertaker. As the final hours tick down on his time with the Rangers, either to be claimed on waivers or demoted to the Wolf Pack (we will find out at noon which one it is), I just want to reflect on his time in our collective conscious.
As far as I can tell, the name “Undertaker” came from a scout while he was still playing for the Moose Jaw Warriors. Big, strong, tough as nails, the Winnipeg, Manitoba native was a physical force in the WHL. It led to him being drafted in the first round, 10th overall, by the New York Rangers in 2010, despite the overwhelming consensus at the time suggesting Cam Fowler was the correct choice (for the record, the correct choice would have been Vladimir Tarasenko, taken 6 picks later). Whether it be a knee injury suffered early in his time as a prospect or whether it was the concerns about his skating and skills being legitimate, McIlrath just never turned into what the Rangers hoped he would be. On Thursday, after spending the early part of the 2016-2017 season as the team’s 8th defenseman, he was waived to be demoted to the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL.
When he was drafted, I absolutely despised the pick. I had ranked 15 players that year and McIlrath wasn’t even on my radar as someone to even remotely consider. Big, slow, and not much offensive upside in a league where the premium was now being put on skating and puck possession. Even his facepunching skills were being phased out of the game. It was just all wrong. The thinking was that we had gone for offensive defensemen in 2006 (Bobby Sanguinetti) and 2008 (Michael Del Zotto), so taking a third would be a waste, while “crease clearing defenseman” was an organizational need. Well, Sanguinetti was already well on his way to being a bust at the time, Del Zotto would flameout just a couple of years later, and pure “crease clearing defenseman” isn’t a role in the NHL anymore. And even if Sanguinetti and Del Zotto both were superstars, why not take another puck mover so we could deal from our depth to fill organization needs, or, more importantly, fill roster spots with players on cheap contracts. The pick was just bad to me on so many levels.
He suffered a serious injury (dislocated knee cap) during the 2012 prospect development camp after a collision with Kyle Jean. It cost him half a season. Some argue that the knee injury is what held him back. I am sure that it didn’t help his development, but the long term effects I think are overstated. He just wasn’t ever going to be a good skater. That was the scouting report. It was true.
I thought he would flame out the way Hugh Jessiman did. When he got a brief cameo in 2014, I felt my concerns were justified as he was part of the players that were victimized in Tarasenko’s highlight reel goal (which was later turned into a flipbook animation). In his only other game that year, he showed his courage by fighting Brian McGrattan. After it was done, I’m sure McIlrath wished he hadn’t.
When he made the team out of camp last year it was clearly more of a case of his waiver status than his standing with the team. However, I was pleasantly surprised with what I saw from him in game action. Skating was still a problem, but he tried to keep his passes simple, and he had a very underrated shot. Low, on goal, and very heavy. More than his “crease clearing” or alleged deterrent effect, I wanted to see more of him because of that shot.
But the more I saw of him, the more it became clear that he was never going to be more than a third pairing defenseman. His skating is bad, especially when he has to start/stop or change from forward to backward. His play with the puck in his own zone is too predictable, far too often backhanding it around the boards. His “fight” against Tomas Hertl was the last straw: not only was McIlrath not adding much, he was now officially a detriment. To me, it felt like he was auditioning for his next employer that would value his toughness.
So now we wait for noon to see if he gets claimed on waivers. He certainly hasn’t shown enough as a player for other teams to be particularly interested in what he is today. Instead, his appeal is in his measurables and unfulfilled potential. As a right-handed defenseman, I think at least one team in the NHL should claim him, if only to see him in person before waiving him again. I think he’s a third pairing defenseman somewhere, even if it wasn’t here. His hometown Winnipeg Jets seem like a good fit, as they could use an extra right handed defenseman while Jacob Trouba holds out. Arizona plays Luke Schenn, and I think he’s certainly better than Schenn. The drawback for any team claiming him is that he turns Group IV UFA if he doesn’t play 42 games this year, but if a team claims him and likes him, that shouldn’t be an issue.
Personally, I’d still prefer him to Clendening or Holden on the right side. But now that he’sCle been waived, for his own good, I hope he clears. He needs to play in the AHL, and frankly, needed that last year as well. At the end of the season, he will be a UFA and can get a fresh start somewhere else.
It’s the Undertaker’s last ride. Ask not for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
***UPDATE 12:01 PM***
McIlrath has cleared waivers and will presumably be assigned to the Wolf Pack. I think that speaks volumes to how he is viewed around the league, and it’s not just that AV hates him. That all being said, barring a slew of injuries to the Rangers defense, he will get a good season of development in the AHL before becoming a Group IV UFA this summer.

BDL- funny you mentioned Boston. I think McIlrath would significantly upgrade their D corps in the speed department. They will be eaten up alive by any team with speed this season. Some teams never adjust.

For the Salary Cap junkies. Considering this season is already 16 days old, and assuming McIlrath doesn’t get recalled this season, waiving him adds additional $3.28M to their cap space by February 28th. (Trade Deadline)

It brings out total space to around 10 million, correct?

I’m afraid McIlrath is done as a Ranger. I can’t believe it’s a personal vendetta between him and AV. I think AV would put Jack The Ripper on defense if he thought it would strengthen the team. I still think he could be a decent 6th defenseman on some other team, but not on this one.

Welcome home, Manny! The solidarity this passed week has made me quite happy. Does anyone remember the awful attempt at the movie Street Fighter? Raul Julia played Bison and had a great line about how the day he stormed Chun Li’s village and killed her parents was the most significant day of her life. For him it was Wednesday. I think this Mcilrath saga is nothing more than a major event to Rangers fans. For the rest of the league it’s one more unproven minor league defensemen on waivers. I’d love to see Mcilrath have a career here and be an integral member of the team just doesn’t look like it’s in the cards for him. Maybe it was but it ended when the organization hired Alain Vigneault.

Seriously? This has been the most entertaining team I’ve seen the Rangers ice in a long time. Not necessarily a long-term success, but entertaining as hell. The 11-12 Rangers, while one of my favorite all-time Rangers team because of working ethic, culture, and just personality of the players away from the ice, made for some really awful hockey. They were scourge of the league for all of the shot blocking, to the point people were seriously discussion how to legislate it out of the game.

Vancouver didn’t have enough depth in skill department to overcome a very physical Boston team. And not enough speed. However, if Chara played at the same level then as he is playing now, Vancouver would’ve prevailed.

Let’s see if he does it to McDavid with Lucie on the ice.

Lucie can skate? Lucic.

Oh I agree with you 100%. I wonder how many oiler fans would whine about a top 6 winger in the box for at least 5 minutes or would say “don’t do anything we’ll make them pay on the power play”? Lol. Ranger fans are such sissies some times 😉

Ilb… the same can be said about Kreider. Pastrnak’s gonna be a great player

On a différent note…any of you local New Yorkers know of any place that still has the women’s rangers hockey fights cancer purple hats from this season?

What can be said about Kreider? Kreider, who had dropped his gloves when challenged, that Kreider. I doubt very much that Pasternak will drop the gloves.

Lev, Kreider can back it up. I’d like to see if Pasternak can

As Zipay said, Pasternak suspension should be served for his next 2 games vs. Rangers. Instead, it’s the Wings and Panthers who will benefit when they face Boston.
LikeLike
Please. How many times has Kreider dropped his gloves? Easy to talk tough when a ref is pushing you away towards your bench. So because Pastrnak delivered a questionable hit on a Ranger (as far as I know this is his first questionable hit) he will someday cross someone the wrong way? Kreider has done that to how many players and teams now?

Pastrnak; all 180 lbs of him? 20 yo playing like he doesn’t have a care in the world. Why should he against NYR??
Oh, that’s right, AV’s NYR whistle to whistling past the graveyard.
.
Wait until McD gets run again and one-armed Klein has to bail him out or AV is “forced” to recall ‘he who shall not be named’ from Hartford for some smart muscle.
.
Problem is the D has no playable toughness save for Klein. Haven’t seen Hold-On do anything yet on that front.
.
it’s still hockey and teams will learn the way to slow NYR down is to hammer the D and make them cough it up.

I’m pretty sure Pasternak also cross checked Vesey in his back after he scored

Did you see how Pastrnak looked when he was skating to his bench after Vesey shoved him? I think the supposed chip on his shoulder has already been filled in.

He didn’t look very smart vs hertl though imo

SN, Girardi was fielding a pop up in the neutral zone. Hardly the situation of dumping it in the corner and banging the defense.

glad we didn’t lose him for nothing… i know the league has spoken on this now but i do feel like we saw a guy capable of playing full third pair minutes last year. hoping that he still gets a true shot with this team one day but am interested to see how he does with extended big minutes in the ahl this year.

And remind me again, how did McIlrath deter Beleskey when he cheapshotted Stepan? Or Gudas when he cheapshotted Vesey? He was literally on the ice-not just in the lineup, but on the actual ice- for both of those.

OK, I had to remove Chicken Parm from the widget. Too much BS tweeting.

I agree with Carp when he would remind us that McIlrath (and most enforcers) do not really serve as a deterrent unless they skate a regular shift with a superstar. Lucic probably does serve that role, but it comes at a cost of him serving majors and being off the ice.
McIlrath comes in handy when a Pasternak or Gudas needs to be put in line or if retribution is needed – like D-Mc did with Simmonds. As was mentioned previously, the problem with Dylan as an enforcer is that you don’t want to have one of your d-men racking up the PIMs withing a game. Thus the Catch-22 position. It would still have been nice to have McIlrath around against the likes of the Flyers.
LikeLike
BTW, I had no problem with McIlrath going after Hertl – whether what he did was accidental or not that bad. I have grown weary of watching Hank get bulldozed by forwards with no one doing anything about it. As far as I am concerned, it is about time someone stepped up for one of the Rangers goalies.

Doodie – \referring to McD. Teams don’t want Girardi hurt. they want him to play as much as possible. That’s why you knew the kid was a rook.
LikeLike
The fact is, you don’t even need to win a fight. If you stand up to who ever tries to take liberties and stand your ground, your going to pump your team up.
At least push em back like Vesey did after his goal,(Stepan’s bump to Gudas after he destroyed Vesey was just pitiful). BUT, you better be ready to defend yourself. Don’t stand there like McDonough did after he put the shaft of his stick up in Simpson’s face. Be ready!
A.V.’s “Whistle to whistle” thing puts the Rangers at a distinct disadvantage.
I don’t want Zucc fighting Chara. I also don’t want guys with concussion histories like McDonough, Staal and Nash fighting, but the idea that McIlrath was going to deter Belesky or anyone else is crap.
If you want a deterrent to keep teams from taking liberties, keep scoring on the PP.
I LOVED seeing McIlrath kick Simpson’s ass. The problem was, that was the highlight of last season.
LikeLike
The deterrent argument is a fool’s errand. Nobody ever said it would prevent those hits from happening, especially in today’s NHL where there is no history of getting one’s face bashed in if they did it.
.
Payback? yes, preferably on their better players, eye for an eye.

Preferred a nice clean check along the wall. Something Dylan did at least 2x/game when he played. Makes the other team think twice on break out and no penalty.
.
Mostly teams need guys to stick up for themselves first. McD has a bad habit of turning both cheeks too much.

Doodie, do you know if any of the common HTML codes ( bold, italics, etc) work on this? Don’t want to post multiple tests

Doodie-Obviously you don’t want to get whooped. That’s a lose lose.
Take the Gudas on Vesey incident. McIlrath came flying in, (God bless him). Vesey is down. Nash and Stepan grabbed somebody’s jersey. Ryan Graves followed their lead.
I don’t want Step fighting Gudas, but the only guy who showed any aggression was McIlrath . Not only do the linesmen go to protect the perp, the other Flyers formed a wall around him. Grab guy and clear some space.

By the way, McIlrath is one way contract so he gets paid the same even if he’s in Hartford. Clendening, on the other hand, is on two-way contract.
