- This game will be remembered as the battle of the shrimps. The Hurricanes’ shrimp was a little better than the Rangers’ and so the Hurricanes get the win.
- Also, Cam Ward was better than Henrik Lundqvist. This isn’t to say Lundqvist was bad. He was good. But it’s becoming all too common for him to be the 2nd best goaltender on any given night.
- The Rangers, when in the Carolina zone, move the puck around freely and at will. So much for that promising Carolina defense. Nash and Vesey break in on a 2 on 2 and generate a bunch of chances, Girardi pinches in and get a good chance out of it, and eventually Faulk puts it out over the glass, sending the Rangers to the PP.
- On the PP, more quick passing inside the zone leads to a pass from behind the goal from Zibanejad to Zuccarello at the left circle. The rebound comes to Zibanejad behind the goal who tries to bank it in off of Ward, and nearly does. But in the aftermath, Buchnevich works the puck free with his skates before being slammed into the ice and on top of Ward by Hainsey, who then laid on top of him. The puck had been kicked by Buchnvich right back to Zibanejad behind the net, who worked it back to Zuccarello who sent it above the traffic on the ice into the open net, 1-0.
- That PP goal was their 4th consecutive game with a PP goal, and they were 5 on their last 12. Having an effective PP is such a dangerous weapon and it seems as if, for now, they finally do. A lot of credit to the Zibanejad and Pirri additions for that.
- Then came two lengthy reviews, first to see if Zibanejad’s shot went in (it did not), then Carolina’s challenge for goaltender interference (there wasn’t). I got to fast forward through it since I was watching it on a delay, but oh man, that must have been terribly boring to watch live.
- Just a couple of minutes later, a horrendous giveaway by Girardi almost made it 1-1. Standing flatfooted in the corner behind the goal, he passes the puck diagonally across the zone, trying to hit Vesey flying the zone on the right wing boards, easily picked off but fortunately shot high and wide.
- Klein and Staal are much too passive on Skinner as he skates up through the middle of the ice. He gets the puck around the net and comes out in front uncontested, as neither Staal or Klein moved from behind the goal line (Klein was interfered with a little bit). Fast was too late coming away from the front of the goal (where he was covering for Staal and Klein) to shut down Skinner, 1-1.
- For as boring as the first period was, the second period was non-stop end to end action. Wicky must have hated it.
- Second period, Zibanejad gets chased from a draw in the offensive zone. Buchnevich steps in and loses it clean. Klein lets Skinner get a step on him and Pesce finds him on the long pass up the middle of the ice. Skinner shields off Klein using some of his fancy figure skating footwork and beats Lundqvist with a backhand, 2-1. You try not to blame a goaltender on a breakaway, but that wasn’t a great one.
- After that, the Rangers really took control of the period. They were all over the Hurricanes, and it was basically Cam Ward who kept the Hurricanes in the game. Zibanejad and Nash were getting a ton of chances and were unlucky not to score.
- Then McDonagh hits Zuccarello with a bomb when Hanifin took a bad angle on his coverage. Zuccarello slips it five hole, 2-2.
- The game then went back and forth for a while until McDonagh can’t handle a hard puck around the boards and trips Stempniak as a result. Or, I should say, gave Stempniak a chance to draw tripping penalty as he went full extension in a dive after taking a stride with the skate McDonagh hit with his stick. On the ensuing PP, Skinner gets a look like Pirri’s from the other night and rips a slapshot that goes in as time expires, 3-2.
- Coincidentally, it was hat giveaway night, and so the hats rained down on the ice while the officials confirmed that the goal was scored with time on the clock. I thought how funny it would be if Skinner wasn’t actually the goal scorer. I wonder if anybody who threw their hat wanted it back after credit for the goal was given to Bickell.
- The period ended in a way I’ve never seen, the ice still filled with hats and the cleaning crew, and with players mixed on both sides of the red line. Why even bother dropping the puck?
- Third period, Holden can’t find a path out of the zone with one forechecker in front of him, so he makes a terrible pass back to Skjei, which leads to the Rangers being stuck in their zone for a minute. Thus far, he is not worth the fourth rounder that was spent on him. Skjei, I should mention, had a pretty solid game, as did most of the Rangers defense, even Girardi, the aforementioned gaffe aside. Klein struggled a bit.
- The rest of the period there was no good pressure as Carolina played chip and chase from their blue line out. The game was choppy and dull. Wicky must have loved it, although there wasn’t enough hitting or any facepunching. The Rangers only managed 7 shots over the final period after having 11 and 12 in the first two, respectively.
- Overall, a great showing at times marred by lack of finish (too many missed nets) and the occasional defensive breakdown leading to a Skinnerific play.
- Did you know that Marc Staal has a brother on the Hurricanes? And that they used to have two other ones as well? Great family, Sam.
My Three Rangers Stars:
- Mats Zuccarello
- Ryan McDonagh
- Mike Zibanejad
Doodie,
You are side stepping it a bit, but the Rangers have a Hank problem. The three losses, Hank has not been good, and he was, as you said, the second best goalie on the ice. If this is now Hank, the Rangers are in big trouble.

Doodie, you are Carp incarnate! Love some of the same snarky phrases (Staal family reunion). Great job on this!
As far as the game – can we just trade for Jeff Skinner and either play him or bury him in the minors? He’s the new John Druce against us.

oh boy bdl, you stole my comment… we’re now in the second season after the talbot trade and at the time i was a big fan of getting rid of hank and keeping talbot (i know, i know), but hank’s age, wear and tear at this point, just didn’t seem like it’d be a good recipe for long term success.
i know he ALWAYS has a slow october, but as doodie said, he can’t be the second best goalie on the ice with cam ward, it just can’t be that way. the cam for hank swap is one i think we’re going to regret… not just in performance but obviously with that massive contract.

Hanka (Mr Softee) laid a couple of Gannetts last night.
He’s laid quite a few Gannetts this year, yet the team is 5-3. Let’s see if he raises his game against Tamper.

Good morning, boneheads!
Nice review, Doodie.
Second game in a row their opposition is trying to stop NY’s middle zone transition by clogging it up, but this time they didn’t adjust. They simple weren’t sharp enough to complete simple, short passes. Too much gap between the defensemen and forwards. I don’t think it’s a coincidence. The league took notice- you let NY’s speed through the middle uncontested, it’ll be a long time.
I don’t think Hank was that bad. But I think he is expected to stop at least one of Skinner’s goals. If not both.

In years past, last nights game is a 2 to 0 win. The excuse for Hank last year ( and it was legitimate) was that the D was breaking down in front of him, and the forwards were no helping enough. Well it seems as if they have fixed those problems. But yet Hank is still not playing well. They have played well enough to be 8 and 0. The reason they are not? Goaltending.

Allowing goals with .1 sec left is inexcusable. Usually results in losses. Hank needs be better as he’s been outplayed in their losses by a wide margin.

Carolina matched speed with the Rangers (and beat them to loose pucks pretty much all night),when that happens this season the defense that looks “okay” on other nights is going to be exposed. Two games in a row now that the blue line has come back down to earth a bit and I think this is the actual product. And with that said Danny G is not a top pair Dman anymore. Said it last night, if in AV’s mind or in actuality he’s the #2 guy on the depth chart it doesn’t matter how many goals they score this season is going to be a disaster. They need to make a move.
LikeLike
Second thing- agreed w BDL on the Hank issue. Forget the losses he hasn’t even had a win yet where he hasn’t let in at least one goal that he probably wished he had back.
We saw a lot of that last year and it looks worse now. Forget who said it last night but that would have been a good game to start Raanta. He needs to play and stay sharp because the 20 some odd games he’s gonna play this year are going to matter. That said the more I see Hank let in those goals and not really find another level the more I worry that he may not find that next gear as often. Hope I’m wrong

Thanks for the Review Doodie.
Unless they think Skjei will be a 1st pair guy by the spring, which they might believe, they need to make a move.
McDonough looked so much better with Holden than he did with G. Holdens not 1st pair guy either, but he’s faster and better than Girardi.
Raanta needs a game, but it probably won’t come vs. Tampa. Why didn’t he play last night?

Thanks Doodie great review my coffee tastes a whole lot better! James G I have to agree that the D needs help where that comes from and how won’t be easy. But there is no denying, and I’m agreeing with you guys who said the same is that Hank on a serious decline and I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see him ever being the “King” again. Second best goalie on the ice is not going to bring the cup to MSG! We are in trouble in net and there doesn’t seem to be a solution on the horizon. This business about his slow starts in Oct. is eventually going to continue on until April. Teams are going to make mistakes that’s how goals are scored, but the team who has the goalie making the big saves at those critical moments usually comes out on top just saying!

On a positive note, Buchnevich is a player. He really payed the price on the first Zucc goal. The kids a keeper.

Speaking of bag…re #9. I’m perfectly happy with end to end action as long as it’s real hockey with physicality mixed in. If I just want to watch players skate back and forth on the ice with no hitting, I’ll just watch a bag skate at practice.

Highlight of the game was meeting up with Blogmama between the 2nd and 3rd periods.
Observations from the cheap seats:
Holden was bad. I mean Dan Boyle bad.
Their main play was to pass to somebody at the red line who deflects it into the offensive zone then forget to forecheck.
Grabner is everywhere. He may not have the skills, but he has the effort. Reminds me of Hagelin.
The hats they threw on the ice were freebies that they gave out as you walked in. So, losing those hats to a non hat trick was no biggie.
The Canes couldn’t fill the arena ontheir home opener. I think Seattle is probably thinking of what to call their team when the Canes move there.

On a different note- this is game #8, and they’re still 5-3 while playing a pretty good hockey in general. So let’s not overreact after one bad game that still could’ve gone either way.

The second goal by Skinner was a bad read by Hank. If he’s out of his crease another foot there’s no room for the backhander to go in. He stayed back and left the long side open.

You can’t win them all, but there are some concerns for sure. Losing to Carolina should always cause concern. They are simply not very good. The defense, again is an issue and will continue to be for the entire season. We have seen Henrik start slowly before, but he looks tentative and is making formerly routine saves look difficult so far this year. It is natural to be concerned that this is Henrik, especially after his weak play last season down the stretch and in the playoffs. One of the criticisms of Vigneault has been the lack of adjustments during games. They reacted well after the first period against Boston, but not so well last night and every team is going to clog the neutral zone against them.

Back to the rangers for a sec…there are a few of us that weren’t sold on hank, and still aren’t especially at that cap hit.
–
i do not think hank is aggressive enough of a goalie for a run and gun team or style of play. He sits way to deep in his net for that style. Up and down the ice run and gun hockey is like a shootout with more players on the ice. Most goalies in the shootout come out and challenge the shooter and cut down the angles. If you’re going to play run and gun, your goalie probably needs to be a little less sit in the net.

This team has no current way to win a game if the opposition shuts down their speed (I.E. clog the neutral zone like most playoff games or play physical in the rangers D zone and not allow the speed game to get started) and the jack wagon coach has made sure this is a one dimensional team…sad!

Something I noticed about Hank last year is happening again this year. he appears to be dropping down to the ice more than he has in the past. In addition, this year it seems that he stays down longer. I have noticed he will drop to the ice at one post and slide his way over to the other post. I don’t remember him doing that as much – especially when the puck isn’t in shooting position or for a rebound.
He also seems to be “overplaying” the puck. On Skinner’s backhander, Hank looked to be caught overplaying to the glove side – possibly because he was down early.
I have to admit I thought Raanta was going to get the start. AV made a point of limiting Hank’;s playing time and he has already played back-to-back (a perfect time to get a backup playing time) and has played seven of eight games.

But I decided to give you a little attention one more time. Not convinced your pea sized brain could understand it, but I’ll try.
I have no idea whether Sioux’s son has anything to do with what you’ve been trying to tell us. Even if it’s true, what exactly is Sioux misleading us in? That he loved his son, and he was his favorite? That he is in tremendous amount of pain, and it unbearable at the moment? I suspect you heart would never get that, for whatever reason. But at the end of the day there is a difference between a human being and an animal.
