Rangers-Lightning in Review

Before we get to the game review, which has graciously been written by James G, I felt that there was something that needed to be addressed.  Over the past couple of days, someone has been posting personal information of users of this blog, often times with hurtful messages, but other times just a general display of his or her knowledge of people’s personal information.  There is nothing that can be done to stop this person.  The best I can do is remove his or her posts if I am alerted to them.  I cannot monitor the blog the way Carp and LoHud did, so they will likely persist longer than I would like.  I have asked ilb, CCCP, and James G to assist me.  If you know any of their e-mails, you can reach out to them directly, or you can e-mail me at rangersreport2@gmail.com or tweet me @rangersreport2 to report any suspicious or malicious activity.

Now, I’d like to briefly address the person who has demonstrated their mastery of the internet.  You win.  I know enough to know I am completely helpless against anything you do.  I am even more helpless than Carp was, since this is not my full time job, and I just don’t have the time to track e-mail addresses and IP addresses to ensure people who post are who they actually say they are.  But I’m not mad. I just feel bad for you.  How hurt you must have been by Carp, myself, or some other people at Rangers Report to spark the vendetta you have chose to pursue.  Whatever it is that I or anyone else did, I’m sorry.  How sad and lonely you must be to continue your grudge to the point where you must either have a database of some sort, even if it’s just a few notes on a piece of paper, to help you keep track of the various poster’s names, e-mail addresses, names of loved ones, telephone numbers, addresses, etc.  At least, I certainly hope that you have the information written down and that it’s not memorized from obsessively scouring the data in your mind.  The returns on your actions must be diminishing at this point, as everyone’s information that you’ve shared has already been shared and made public to everyone else.  And most of the regulars have already shared their personal information with each other in private.  If you’re in it just for the lulz, maybe you should aim a bit higher than a Rangers fan blog, although I’m sure you would be licking your fingers while reading this statement.  I can assure you that it will be the last time I mention this subject.

Whatever happened in the past is in the past. You have a chance here to start over.  You can join the community and participate.  Nobody knows who you are.  Or, you can choose to keep doing what you’re doing, and we’ll remove the posts as often and as quickly as we can.  I just know that the path you’re currently going down is the lonelier one.

Now, here’s the game review.  As an example of this being only a part-time commitment for me, I had to ask James G to handle the review.  I only caught the 2nd period of the game.

1- So it dawned on me while I was getting ready to do this fill in game review that I’ve actually never had so much as a single guest blog entry in all my years of being around the bonehead tribe. So hopefully no one will say I should have kept it that way when they’re done reading.

2- I thought I’d start with this little tid bit instead of diving right in to what was a pretty satisfying win. It’s well documented that last season the Rangers seemed to be playing so much worse at the start and yet they were winning games. I think you know where this is going- last season through 9 games: 5-2-2. 12 points. 24 gf and 19ga…This season 6-3 12 points 35 gf and 22 ga. Raanta started game #10 for his second start (and second victory) of the season and this year.

3- So why not start with the back up goalie who looks a bit more comfortable in his second year on Broadway? Raanta, known for strong starts to the season- especially at home- seems to me to have a bit of quiet confidence to him this year. It isn’t just how he’s looked in 120 minutes in nets but the way he speaks in interviews. He knows what they need from him and he’s provided it thus far. Didn’t have to stand on his head but he was sharp in what turned out to be a busy night. 32 shots, 31 saves/ Nearly had the shut out. He’s going to see 20+ games this year if the coach has his way and they’re going to need him to contribute to the stability in net.

4- Thought the first period was going to have that Sunday evening game stink to it and then out come this season’s Rangers. 16 shots on Ben Bishop over the first 20 minutes and a couple power plays that they wound up negating by taking penalties of their own. Not sure if it was the home team looking to bounce back from what was their worst showing of the young season in Raleigh  or Tampa playing the second game of a back to back. Either way, the Rangers are showing some aggression so far with their speed and the way they have put the puck on net. It’s fun to watch and it’s working thus far.

5- Speaking of working, Stranger Nation said it to me and the rest of yous at least a handful of times over the summer. Grabner is a guy who can slide up to the third line and contribute on offense. He got proven right in a big way. AV’s decision to put him on that line with Hayes and Miller paid huge dividends. Grabner’s speed is pretty impressive and it fills the void left by Carl Hagelin. The way he goes to the net it’s hard to believe he hasn’t scored more since that one 30 goal season a few years back. Nice to seem him get the hat trick. And it wasn’t just him, that whole line had itself a night.  Kevin Hayes played probably his best game of the season and J.T Miller just continues to show his progression.

6- I don’t think Miller was discussed enough over the summer. I wondered if there would be some regression there after a 20+ goal season but he’s been one of the best players here to start. Seems to have gotten past the whole “nightly blunder” phase that plagued him for much of last season. Many assumed he’d be on the top 2 lines but he’s found himself a home early on here on the third line with Hayes. Just great chemistry thus far and though I hate to repeat anything Sam and Joe comment about,  it was nice to see him rewarded with a goal after the way he’s played and the opportunites he’s had. Looking forward to more of the same from him.

7- Speaking of more of the same, With the exception of Friday night’s debacle against the ‘Canes, the Rangers sure seem to enjoy the second period of games, don’t they? Just dominating the opposition in the middle periods through these first 9 games. Impressive when you consider how they take a good amount of those off last season. 3 goals in the span of 2 ½ minutes in putting Tampa back on their heels. The immortal Ben Bishop looked human at MSG for once. The Rangers don’t seem to be having a problem solving goalies that have been historically problematic for them so far.

8- They do seem to be cherry picking just a tad though. Last game it was Zucc and this time Rick Nash who saw an opportunity early in the second. Took the long pass from Holden and off he went on the breakaway to give them the 1-0 lead with his 4th of the year. Nash has been good thus far. Maybe he’s benefitting from not having the spotlight on him. That will happen when a team gets a balanced scoring attack and 35 goals in its first 9 games. But it’s a long season and they’re still going to need him to contribute on offense.

9- The word contribution is going to come up a lot this season with the way they’re getting them from so many guys night after night. But that word reall makes me think of this summer’s Jimmy Vesey sweepstakes and how he said he chose the Rangers based on where he felt he would have a regular role on the team where he can contribute and fit in well. Boy has he done that or what?. Scores his 5th of the year for the 3-0 lead. The kid has been great. Hasn’t made any rookie mistakes, has a nose for the net and the hockey IQ has really impressed me. Looks like a guy who’s been in the league 3-4 years instead of a 3rd round draft pick that everyone thought was overhyped  this summer. He and Buchnevich have proven the ledge walkers wrong thus far and really add some elements that were sorely lacking on this team.

10- All this and I haven’t mentioned the defense yet. Thought they had a solid showing after two games where they really seemed like they were coming back down to earth. Ryan Mcdonagh has been an anchor. Looks like the Mcdonuts of old before the slew of injuries that have literally battered him from head to toe over the last few seasons. I still think he needs a partner upgrade. Danny G won’t last on that top pair and no one else on the team has shown they can take that spot. It’s concerning for the long haul even if it’s getting them by for right now. I hear some kid who is an RFA is available in Winnipeg. They may want to call and find out some information about him. Who knows, he may be a good fit here.

11-  Have I ever told you guys how much I enjoy watching Jon Cooper lose? It’s enough to miss the beginning of the Walking Dead.

12- I’m sure I missed a bunch of stuff that you guys can let me know about but I’m going to wrap this up by saying how much I’ve enjoyed seeing so many of the “core” boneheads contribute to this place so far in addition to some of the guys who haven’t posted in a while making their return. It’s not just the great work by Doodie but everyone else who contributes quality hockey talk and jibberish (gibberish?) on a regular basis.

And Carp, if you read this please know that things just aren’t the same without you at the helm and this place really is just keeping your seat warm until you’re situated. We miss you man.

  1. Good morning, boneheads!
Doodie, thank you! Agree wholeheartedly. And the last time mentioning this subject is the only way to go. For everyone.
Now, let me read James’ review.

  2. Nicely done, JamesG!
The offensive output they’ve been able to produce so far isn’t totally surprising considering they’ve added a good amount of skill up front. But some of the players they’ve added are producing at a higher rate than all of us expected. Miller leads them in points, McD has 8 points in 9 games, Vesey and Grabner with 5 goals each, Kreider has 7 points in 5 games he played. Mika Zibanejad, on the other hand, only has 2 goals so far. I’m sure he’ll start producing more, especially when Kreider is back.

  3. This is what impressed me the most last night. The defensive zone play. It looked like it had a structure first time this season. It had glimpses of that structure before, but yesterday it appeared more complete. When Tampa was forechecking and putting pressure on them, when Tampa’s defense was activated to outnumber NY’s defense, first time in awhile there was no panic at the disco. They appeared to know what to do, which way to turn, and they appeared to know exactly where their D-partner, or backchecking forward was. Puck support was superb. They all appear to know their role. Did you see Zucc covering the front of the net to eliminate an “uncontested” situation? Twice? And eventually, while frustrating Tampa defensively they’ve been able to suffocate them with speed, as they’ve done to the most of their opponents so far. Can you say Jeff Beukeboom? I know it’s early, but I’d like to believe they are building something this year in their defensive zone.

  4. Good morning all! Still smarting over my total TV/online blackout last night, but so happy for Tony from AZ’s family, who attended the game and scattered some of Tony at MSG. Our man was surely smiling and looking down from above.

Excellent post Doodie and swell review James.

  5. That’s my struggle too blogmama. 4 out of the first 9 games on NHLN. And if they keep this up, they’ll be on a ton more.

So much balance on this team. They can roll 3 lines for serious offense and still have Brandon Pirri left over for the PP. And Kreider isn’t even playing.

  6. One small critique of the game reviews by all very wonderful Carp seat warmers…
Carp used to put the score right at the top of the review. I only saw up to the 3 goals and am only guessing the score given a Former Fishstick Hattie.
    Great review tho!

  7. Haze definitely lost weight. A 180 lb couch to be exact… His pass while double teamed on Grabby’s 2nd (?) was really skillful.
    .
Holden looked better last night, feel for the guy having to place off-side. With all the O, this team needs a top 4 RD.
    .
Thought Auntie Rantaa had some real tough saves in first half of game, which he used his positioning to make some key saves and take some life out of the Bolts playing 2nd of back to back.
    .
Agreee JT is much, much more consistent and could have 8 goals this year (including another post last night)
    .
Finally, I was hoping someone from UND would score during the game last night. I am sure, somewhere, someone did and allow Sioux to smile during a very tough time.

  8. Miller and Hayes had someone who can actually put a puck in the net. I think both Miller and Hayes have improved defensively enough. They do not need someone who is defensively responsible anymore.
When Kreider is back, who sits?
Something tells me BDL has an answer. 🙂
I don’t disagree if it’s Fast who sits.Hard to sit Pirri. If he doesn’t score, the opposition knows he is a weapon every time he is left alone

    Like

  9. Was thinking who sits and thought Pirri only because still thinking a defensive oriented 4th line is needed when the ice gets smaller as the season progresses and there are enough weapons on O for the PP. Pirri ability to play the PP point is a strong reason to play him but also noticed him making mistakes in neutral zone which could eventually end up in the back of the net…ours, not theirs…

  10. Why does Fast (Couch) have to sit over Lindberg? I thought Fast had a nice game last night, including a deft play in his own corner under pressure from 2-3 Tampa players to chip the puck out to safety.

Didn’t I tell you about Grabner after last game? If he keeps this up, what a steal in free agency.

  12. Oh yeah. The only way to get games on your TV is by buying the Center Ice package. Otherwise, you have to go to the streaming sites online. If you do that, be sure to expand the broadcast to full screen to block out all the popup ads. Getting adblock helps a lot too.

  13. Ilb,
Having paid attention to AVs personal decisions over the years, I can pretty much tell you his reasoning for a Buchnevich scratch.
Reporter, AV why the decision to scratch Buchnevich?
AV,” I wanted Zucc with Kreider, and Zibinajad. I think that line could be dynamic. I liked the chemistry between Miller, Hayes, and Grabner. Buchnevich is not a 4th line player, he needs to be in the top 9. Right now it’s a numbers game, he is going through the process. He needs to be ready when his number is called.”

  17. As for the Rangers I am, as always, concerned about AV’s system come playoff time. The guy has proven that his system is a regular season BEAST. What he hasn’t proven is that his system can adjust for tigheter play in the post.

First time in ages (thanks to the clocks changing over here) i’ve managed to watch a full game live and not delayed.

I’m saying Pirri comes out for Kreider, his Pouliot last night was the reason Raanta didnt get a donut.

Are boys looked like they were on a mission hoping they keep it up! Love to see Cooper’s face when the lighting are getting trounced, really made my evening! I posted last week about putting Grabner with Kreider and Zibanejad, but I am thinking AV should keep him with Miller And Haze even when The comes back. My question when The Kreider comes back who comes out? Go Rangers!

  24. Nice review. As one who has not been the biggest supporter of Hayes, it is good to see he left the bong and doritos at the other apartment. Think that might have been his best overall game as a NYR yet. Miller keeps improving and though he has had bad puck luck, teams will have to respect him and that opens it up for others. Really have to like the offense, any given night any line can put a bunch in. I think AV will use the box as a rotating time off seat once THE is back. He actually has the luxury of being able to give a maintenance day to guys like Zuc, Nash, etc. Is it time for G’s transmission check and oil change yet? He’s played well (enough) so far, just worry about being left on the side of the road unexpectedly…

  27. Thanks for the Review James.

What would Trouba cost? The guys I would dangle would some combination of Lindberg, Zucc, Klein and Skjei. Not sure if that piques Winnepeg ‘s interest.

Raanta needs to play more. Every third game or so.

  28. As much as you can see the need for a top 4 right sided puck mover, our D did just fine making those outlet passes last night and our forwards worked hard covering the gaps most of the night. Problem is to get a Trouba we’d have to lose a couple (and we’ve also got to consider who we’ll have to make available in the expansion draft)

  29. Only 9 games in and so many encouraging signs that the issues of last year (pick one) have not merely been addressed but done so effectively and smartly. Harder to do while staying within a manageable cap.

I’m impressed w/ how well this team appears to be gelling (jelling?) so quickly. Looks like mgmt did their due diligence in terms of bringing in players w/ character and work ethic. Our boys all look like they’re on the same page which speaks to a prepared coaching staff who are effectively teaching a slightly different system. Consistency, as always, will be essential and a challenge for another 73 games. I’m impressed, very hopeful and having fun watching games again.

  30. The ‘Peg need a lefty D man – they want him young, so thats Skjei not Staal, but it’ll take much more than that to get him so we’d have to be prepared to lose a young forward (Hayes, Miller, Buke) and a top draft pick, maybe a 1st. Plus you’re also then taking on a 6 x $5.5m contract to add to some other biggies on D already.

Manny has a really good point about just blocking IP addresses instead of pulling posts. makes for less patrolling..funny how the term ‘trolling’ is in that word.

  33. Hayes has been better. Still making me nuts at times with how he holds onto the puck too long while stick handling like he’s playing pick up down at the Hommocks ice rink. But he’s had hustle, and hasnt been a defensive nightmare aside from that gaff on the first Skinner goal Fri night. You can say that about most of the young forwards. Wasn’t everyone freaking out about how Buchnevich was going to be this huge defensive liability? haven’t seen it yet. I don’t know if they can continue scoring at this pace (Grabner had 9 all of last year btw. 5 already) but if/when it slows down the solid defensive zone play will be important.

  34. If we had Wheeler and Laine on the right side here in NY would you guys be interested in trading a valuable asset for Zuccarello? The more I think about it the more I feel like they’d have an easier time getting a deal done for Shattenkirk with what they have to offer. I’d be disappointed if that was the case and Trouba got traded.

  35. Sadly Eric, I have to agree. There’s just not enough there to carry them 82 games. And especially if something happens to Mcdonagh or Staal? It can get scary quick.

  36. On the top 4 discussion. They need one. This could be a very special team if this issue is addressed. I go back and forth on whether they should do it right away, or they should wait until much later. The more I think about it, they more I believe they should take some time. Too many variables to consider. Is it a plug in, one season only/rental guy? If yes, you don’t want to give up too much. Is it a long term solution? Then you’ll have to give up some assets. But also this- the expansion draft. They need to really calculate who can, and has to be protected, in both forwards and D-men positions.Does a player coming back have to protected. And whoever they give up, would they have to expose him or protect him? But that’s why Gorton is being paid big bucks.

    Liked by 1 person

  37. Personally I would wait. For a couple of reasons. First, I want to know what the expansion draft rules are going to look like. Because you might be able to find a team that won’t be able to protect all their quality players. Second, I want to see what the playoff picture looks like and I think this team, as is, will be in the playoffs easily. Third, and finally, I want to watch for injuries. I don’t know about Girardi and Staal down the road this season so I want to know how rough the shape we are going to end up is before I go overspending.

    Liked by 1 person

  38. ILB, it’s definitely easier to say they should wait when they’re winning games. I think this team is good and has enough skill up front to make a deal that can add some balance but I think they need a quality for quality trade for a long term guy that can play the right side. No one wants to revisit the Yandle situation. It always comes down to who is available and who you have to give up though, and if the price is right they may move on a temporary fix.

  39. I’m all for long term. Not sure who that player is. Vatanen? Maybe? Trouba? Probably. But considering what Winnipeg wants for him, and that their demands haven’t changed, I believe they will sign him to some sort of extension before December 1st

  40. I’m not sure our GM should be handing out too many long term contracts without subtracting one first.
There are a lot of issues to deal with and remain cap compliant the next 2 off seasons
Skjei and Klein will need dealing with at the end of next season and more importantly Zibanejad, Pirri, Fast & Lindberg this season – all RFA’s except Optimus Klein.

    Like

  41. Good point about the expansion draft, Manny. It will be interesting as the season develops to see where their priorities may lie.
UK, I think Zibanejad will be their main focus up front. Is Pirri RFA? My guess would be a buy out of Girardi and depending on Graves’ progression, maybe Staal gets left unprotected.

    Like

  42. James – I think our solution may be in Hartford. Rangers do have some extra forwards that could draw trade attention. The problem is the cap and what happens once Vegas starts picking players. Too many unknowns for my simple mind to contemplate. That said, I can easily see Girardi breaking down at some point this season – and if so – can the Wrath be that guy?

  43. One very noticeable thing VC and Butch do is head to the blue paint. Too much perimeter play over the years made our offense too easy to defend. Good thing Stamkos gave Butch a rub down to help his aching back.

  44. Not sure the coach is interested in bringing Mcilrath up again unless someone knee caps Clendening in the workout room, E3. If Girardi goes down AV will predictably switch someone from the left side to the right and go from there. Maybe giving Graves a chance on the third pair in the prOcess.

  45. The defense by the offense has been huge. Not to say the d itself hasn’t been better. It has, but the back-checking, the flow, not getting flat footed, not flailing has been leagues better, and the focus on transition game has been awesome! Safe to say Beuk has been a really good choice? Maybe Yardle was lr cancer? I’d, but the pieces this year seem to fit way better.

I’d also trade zucc and skjel for trouba…I still think they need a centre that can routinely win vital draws so Hayes is expendable imho…just not sure if you move him to get a D man or to get a centre.

  60. The way Nash-Stepan-Vesey are going, and with the obvious newly found Hayes-JT chemistry, good luck to the opposition in choosing their best coverage when Kreider is back. By the way, they owe one to St. Louis. This was the game NY should’ve come out with 2 points, not the other way around.

  62. Zibanejad, Stepan, Hayes, Vesey, Nash, Kreider, Zuccarello, Miller, Buchnevich are all going to play top 9. Pirri and Grabner and Fast will make up the “fourth line” on paper and things will shuffle depending on special teams and defensive zone draws. That’s the most effective lineup they can have on a nightly basis until there’s a slump, an injury or a need for Lindberg once he’s back at full strength.

  63. I am happy with many of Gorton’s moves. A real current, cap thinking GM!! Unlike the loser we had before him. Zibinijad, Grabner. Shoestring deals! Nice moves.

  64. Zibanejad got some good looks against Carolina but was unlucky not to score. What about last night? It’s been a while since he put one in the net. He also doesn’t have an even strength point since Kreider went out. I only ask because a lot of the scouting reports on him from Ottawa suggest that he’s a streaky player, so I want to try and track his consistency a bit.

  65. No problem with AV really riding the hot hand ( Grabner), But as soon as that hand cools there can be no hesitation, back to the 4th line where he belongs.

  66. Again though, you can’t make too many decisions based on the first 9 games of the year. Guys are going to cool off and the scoring will slow down at times. The important part is that they keep playing smart in all 3 zones and stay healthy. There’s chemistry among certain forwards and you have to go with it.

  67. Hi, Bonehead community. I just want to say I’ve been a lurker and avid reader of Carp’s since ~2008 and I’m very thankful for you guys all keeping this up, although like the rest of you I miss Carp’s reviews 😦

PS- A special thanks to CCCP for commenting here and letting me know about RR2.0!

  68. Doodie – I mean rengersreport2 – your doing a great job. Just great.
BDL – I think the Zuccarello trade talk is a bit premature. Yeah – I’m biased being a norwegian and all, but…
If I remember correctly our leading scorer at this point of the season one year ago was Oscar Lindberg. Well, he cooled off a bit. Might happen with VC or Buch – or both. I’ll keep Zuccarello for now. He’s been good for 45-60 points the last three years. Why not wait until the trade deadline? A lot of things might happen. I’m an optimist. I think we have four legit defenders in McD, Klein, Staal and Skjei. Jury’s still out on Girardi and even more so on Holden. I like Clendenning better (small sample size, I know) If it turns out – come february – that the one piece missing is a Shattenkirk, ok – let’s talk then. But it’s 40-50 games ahead.

Doodie – did I mention you’re doing a great job?

PS: Manny – nice seeing you around.

  70. Inthearms….I found myself keying on Skjei while watching at MSG. For this stage of development, he’s a player. Good IQ, nice passing, and learning defense. That pass back to Grabner on the tic-tac-toe was really nice. Agree, the kid’s a top 4.

  71. Doodie – As with Carp this year, the reviews have morphed into a game summary with some analysis.
    .
For myself, the analysis is more interesting than the game review. While these are intertwined, you could grab the MSG post game notes as Carp did for the tactical game summary and free the game review to focus on the color commentary.
    .
Easier said than done. Just my three cents.

  73. Like so many of us, I go back and forth about whether to (try to make a) deal for Trouba. IMHO Shattenkirk is a bad idea for this year and might be a bad idea for next summer a well.

We really have to imagine where Skjei will be in the spring. It may only be 5 or 6 months away, but we have to remember, he only played a handful of NHL games last year. And he deserved to be on the first pair last spring in that ugly series they lost to Pittsburgh.

If Skjei gets to work with Girardi, Klein, Holden and McDonough, as well as the coaching staff, while he’s gaining valuable experience, he’s going to continue to improve.

    McDonough Skjei
    Staal Klein
    Holden Girardi

That could wind up being a solid defensive corps by spring and we wouldn’t have to give up a guy like Zucc or Miller or Hayes.

  74. I think lets just let this season play forward and see what becomes available at the trade deadline. At that point, we will see what we have in Skeij, Holden, Clendening, Girardi… And we will see which teams are sellers/buyers which will drive the market in terms of who is available at what price. I’m also into enjoying the depth we have at forward and seeing how this season unfolds. I don’t think we’ll be seeing any trading for a while.

  75. Stranger, when I give the play by play, I like to do it to help analyze what actually happened, who deserves blame for the breakdowns, who deserves credit for making good plays. That’s my thinking on doing it that way.

    Like

  76. Admiral- I agree with that.

I think that approach may leave us out of the mix for Trouba because his situation will need to be more or less resolved, (for this year at least), in the next month.

We my not know who the sellers are until days before the trade deadline. We’ve seen teams (like Sather’s Rangers) overpay time and agan in deadline deals. But yes. There will/could be some other options at the deadline which are impossible today predict right now.

I’ll say this, I have more faith in Gorton than I’ve had in any other Ranger GM in long, long time.

    Like

  77. Definitely Gorton has done a great job.

Let’s remember: Sather left him with a mess. A relatively bare prospect pool, decimated draft picks, team at or near the cap ceiling… SATHER tried to go for it and in return left the new GM in a precarious position. Gorton was supposed to turn the roster over this summer despite huge contracts to Nash, Hank, and big contracts/NMC’s to Staal and Girardi… instead Gorton made many small moves which have significantly upgraded this team which was supposed to be on the “decline” (trades for Z-jad, Holden, signs Grabner, Pirri from scrap heap, Jooris, Clendening, signs Vesey against expert predictions, Buchnevich…)

I know the 6-3 start is the same amount of points (12) as last year’s team 5-2-2, but this team seems for real – the 6-3 could easily be 8-1 or even 9-0.

  78. Absolutely Admiral.

Yes Doodie. And I think Neal Smith doesn’t get a lot of the respect he deserves in New York. But he operated in the precap era and eventually he fell into the trap of sacrificing the future to give his group one more kick at the can. We paid for that with some of the worst Ranger teams I ever saw in the early 2000’s.
