Rangers vs. Oilers, Pregame News & Notes

I’ll be in attendance tonight for McDavidpalooza.  Last year he was injured and missed the game at MSG, although I landed free tickets of him (with free food!) when he went to Barclay’s and the Islanders absolutely routed the Oilers.

I I have no idea how I’m going to take notes for blogging, but sure, I’ll give it a shot. At least when Carp was in the press box he could use the monitors.  Talk about easy work!

Here here are the pregame news and notes from the Rangers, via my anonymous source, edited to reflect the date of publication:

  1. Today is the 1’st day of the rest of my life. Today at 9:00 am I need to sit down with family and prepare for the day I have to bury Sioux JR. I’m not looking forward to this day at all. In fact I think I should just stay in bed but I can’t sleep. I need to find some head phones and listen to Hallelujah sung to me by Pentatonix.

  2. I just wanted to say Thank You for all your kind words. You know who you are, and I can’t wait till I can personally give you a hug.

I’ll try to watch the game tonight, or perhaps I’ll just have a shot of whiskey everytime the red light goes off 🙂
Here’s hoping they score early and often. I’m going to need to ease the pain.

Now go out and be the very best version of YOU that you can BE TODAY.

    I love you guys!!!!

  4. Hello and thank you doodie for doing what you are doing. I only found this blog today and have been searching (evidently not thoroughly enough) ever since Carp got eliminated. How can we make this site more easily found? I found it through reddit, but I have been googling for rangers blogs a lot and have come up empty, until today. It seems that quite a few of the old Carp followers have found this site, though. Is this a problem or am I just cr*p at using this interweb-thing?

  5. Sioux, words simply aren’t adequate for your and your family’s loss. Cry as much as you need and hold tight to cherished times. Many of us will be thinking and praying for the Sioux family.

  6. Sioux – let it out, let it all out. Think of the good times, think of the times he made you burst with pride. Think of those 6 people he has granted prolonged life to. I feel for you, i cannot fathom how it must feel to lose a child just know that there is at least one person a few thousand miles away who weeps for your loss too. Much love to you today

  7. Wicky,
From our previous discussion.mlaatnseason, the Rangers had two instigator penalties. One from Kreider, against the Sens, and one from McIlrath, against the Bruins. Kreider also had one the season before against the Jackets. So it’s not as if they don’t react, they just don’t react every single time.

Yeah, i remember both those and I agree. I really wonder why a bruin didn’t get an instigator Tuesday night but the lightning player did for the same damn thing. Talk about inconsistency among refs

  9. re: Instigators – A fight not occurring, or at the very least a major not being called, doesn’t mean that a scrum didn’t occur. I’ve seen these guys stand up for each other, getting into it with an opponent after a big hit, dirty hit, etc. Sometimes you get some coincidental minors for roughing, sometimes nothing is called. And the last time someone creamed an opponent for perceived liberties (McIlrath on Hotdogtl), it was roundly rejected as the wrong move.

I can admit that we might be considered on the wrong side of the tough/soft line. Not by much, but sure. But I do feel that the way the game is going, you need every player on your team to be able to play the game on both ends of the ice. So your one-dimensional Glasses and Tostitos…while they play tough and their teammates love them for it…those guys are becoming obsolete. Our tough guys need to be able to play. To be able to chip in 10-12 goals, kill penalties, show restraint when necessary. That’s why when Matt Martin scores 10 goals, he gets a big UFA contract. That’s why we paid such a price to acquire damaged goods in Ryane Clowe. That’s why guys like Troy Brouwer get traded for TJ Oshie.

  16. Good players do draw attention. Especially the ones who’ve been talked about since they were 7 years old. That’s why I gave Sidney a bit of a whiners pass for a little while – guys have been hacking him to pieces since he was in single-digits.
But that lasted about 5 games for me – biggest goddamn baby I’ve seen in hockey in the past decade.

I definitely will not be blogging in game. I think the plan will be to record little audio notes, then type them up on the ride home.

But what really kills me is not having the replay.

  24. Doodie, er RR2.0, I tried the audio notes when I first started covering the Iona College hockey team but I could never quite find what I was looking for. I ended up jotting down notes as the game progressed. At home it was easy because i sat at a table with the assistant coach and SID. On the road i was often just sitting in the stands with my trusty notebook – and that was tougher.

I did have it easy because i was doing a straight game recap without any commentary – unlike this thing of ours. And that makes your job waaay tougher and its why I enjoy this Blog so much and why I enjoyed (and hopefully will get to enjoy soon) the journalistic stylings of our Fearless Leader, Carp.

One final thing, to Sioux all of our thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. I never had any children and can’t imagine what it is like to live through losing a child. It has been a tough year for the Bonehead Nation. I just hope that you find some laughs and distractions here amongst all of our g(j)ibberish. I know I have during the last few months. God bless you and yours.

  25. I wish I could help with any of the reviews, but oftentimes I watch it so late that it would be impossible to submit it before it’s too late. Not to mention I’m at the hospital before 7. But I’m going to write a couple of guest posts once I have time so that you have it in case you have a day or two without any new posts.

  26. Stop worrying about it, Doodie. Whether or not we have a game review or a poll, it doesn’t matter. We have a place to come and discuss the games. That’s what’s important. We all really appreciate your efforts. And those that don’t will get their azzes kicked!

  29. RR2 – Believe me when I tell you that you don’t need a journalism degree 🙂 I got my degree in 1988 and didn’t write a single game recap/review/story until I did one for an old Rangers listserv in 1997. Granted, I did cover the Iona soccer team while I was in school and that probably helped me more than anything else.

I would love to volunteer but you guys wouldn’t get a story until I got to work the next morning. I hated deadlines when i covered Iona Hockey for USCHO. Worst part, besides not getting paid, was that I had to enter the boxscores and and stats information. It was a pain in the neck because I had to keep track of goalie’s time on ice – including when they got pulled, all of the penalties and power plays. Sometimes I got lucky because some schools did a good job of keeping/getting the stats out. Other places, oofah.

In all the years I covered Iona, I did get to see two NHLers play – and both did play for the Rangers. Patrick Rissmiller played for Holy Cross and Thomas Pock of UMass-Amherst.

  30. That was his only goal in NY I believe. My only memory about Woywitka is when he and his partner ( forget who it was) were pinned down in their own zone against SJ who was able to change 3 times. I needed oxygen just looking at them. I believe SJ scored at the end too.
