Rangers-Jets in Review

As will be customary for most weekend games, we have a guest reviewer.

Rangers vs Jets – In Review
By Jeff Yerger
(Just a quick, shameless plug for me… feel free to join me on Twitter if you got it: @jyergs. Also, I occasionally write stuff here: https://sundaybarrel.wordpress.com/)

1. You gotta love these Sunday night, non-conference match ups. Those fans at the Garden sure seemed excited to see all that young Jets talent come to town. Or maybe they were just leftover from the Knicks.
2. To me, this game had a big fat “L” written all over it for the Rangers, being their 5th game in 8 days, and the night after a well-earned road win against an Original Six rival. These guys are only human right? How the heck do you get up for a game – against a middle-of-the-road team you only see twice a year – on the B-side of a back-to-back weekend? Plus, the Jets did not play the night before, and they had A LOT of young talent with fresh legs on the ice. So yeah, this one had dud written all over it.
3. But how many times this season have we said “last year’s team loses this game”? This year’s Ranger’s squad is most definitely not last year’s team.
4. The Rangers started the game strong, with a pace that the Jets weren’t prepared for. They’re using their speed so well this season. I think the Rangers have more odd-man rushes this year so far than they had all of last season. It seems like it anyway.
5. You know what they say: there’s no such thing as having two starting goalies? Well, the Jets don’t even have one. Woof! And it didn’t take long for the Rangers to exploit this weakness. Hayes starts the scoring with a harmless wrister on net from the point that Hellebuyck HAS to save. But when you’re hot, you’re hot, and Hayes continues his streak en fuego.
6. Midway through the first period, the Jets woke up and put the Rangers on their heels, dancing around the Rangers defense and hitting a few posts in the process. After some sustained offensive-zone pressure, Ben Chariot put the puck towards the net and the 18-year-old rookie Patrik Laine is able to out muscle Brady Skjei and get his stick on the puck to deflect it past Lundqvist. Tie game.
7. Laine is a big, strong dude with some mitts on him. The Jets were lucky to draft him. Kid’s gonna be a star. He’s already playing like one.
8. In the 2nd period, Winnipeg continued to control the play. The Rangers didn’t have a sharp start, and weren’t able to put pressure on in the Jets zone at all. Hellebuyck could’ve sat back and sipped some ice tea… I mean lemonade! Read the sign!
9. That line of Laine-Lowry-Petan was giving the Rangers some trouble. Staal, in particular, had a tough game against this younger Jets team. He didn’t look comfortable for most of the night.
10. Byfuglien = Monster… but you knew this already. There was a sequence in the 2nd period where he ripped a nasty shot on goal, then had to hustle back and break up a quality scoring chance from Grabner to Pirri. Then how about those two GIANT hits on Buchnevich? Whoo boy! Welcome to the NHL, kid.
11. But big tree fall hard, and the Rangers took advantage of a Byfuglien tumble. Kreider immediately controlled the puck, gained the zone quickly, and fed a sharp pass to Zuccarello, who did not hesitate to pick a corner.
12. Good things happen when you stop playing fancy-boy hockey and start thinking shoot-first.
13. Yet, Winnipeg continued to stay hard on the puck, not giving the Rangers a lot of time to make plays in their own zone. The fresh legs of the Jets were starting to show. Not long after Zuccarello’s goal, the Rangers have a major defensive lapse in their own zone, leaving the middle of the ice wide open. Jets Defenseman Paul Postma could’ve landed a jumbo jet inside all that room he had to skate. He puts the puck on net, and a scramble ensues in Lundqvist’s crease. Skjei tries to save the loose puck, but Scheifele buries it. Tie game again.
14. Then about a minute later, the Rangers’ first line of Hayes-Grabner-Miller strikes back. Miller wastes notching his 5th of the season, shooting the puck short side over Hellebuyck’s left shoulder. Although Hellebuyck should’ve challenged that shot better, Miller did the right thing and put the puck on net. This kid is really blossoming into a mature and smart hockey player. It started at the end of last season, and it’s really starting to show early on in this campaign.
15. The Rangers have a legitimate fourth line again. Great play by Pirri to gain the zone, Klein sends the puck to the net, and the Rangers get a fortuitous bounce off of Fast’s right skate. Adios Hallebuck, hello Michael Hutchinson. I think there was a traffic cone on 7th Ave that the Jets should’ve put in goal instead.
16. Boy oh boy, how about that move by the rookie Russian Buchnevich for the Rangers’ 5th goal of the night? Skill, patience, strength. Think he’s starting to feel it? The young talent not only on the ice tonight but throughout the entire NHL this year is really spectacular. Too bad Bettman and his cronies have to dilute it by putting a hockey team in the middle of the freakin’ desert.
17. So, ya boys have scored 5 or more goals for 5 games in a row now, the first time this has happened since 1978-79. Papa John’s running out of pizza dough, and he’s got Peyton Manning working overtime in the kitchen.
18. Daily Nash-O-Meter: 1 SOG. 2 PIMs. Shrug.
19. Of course, we can’t forget about Henrik Lundqvist, who had a quietly spectacular game. After the barrage of goals in the 2nd, it’s easy to forget how solid Lundqvist was in goal. After watching a team like the Jets ride the goalie carousel, it makes you appreciate the insurance and comfort of having Henrik Lundqvist back there. The way the first half of that period went, it easily could’ve been 5-2 the other way. When the Rangers D-men got beat tonight, Lundqvist was there to bail them out.
20. By the time the third period came around, the Rangers were running on fumes. They called more timeouts in the third than they had shots on goal. Nevertheless, the Rangers didn’t lapse defensively. They limited the Jets’ chances, blocking shooting lanes and keeping the puck to the outside, especially during the two penalties the Rangers had to kill. They closed the game out without any hiccups.
21. Is it just me or have our fine NHL officials actually been… well… fine so far this season? There were only two penalties called in this game, with a bit of a soft call on Nash with the hook, but when the stick’s horizontal like that, the refs are going to call that every time.
22. Like I said, you gotta love those Sunday night MSG crowds. Score 5 goals? Barely a peep in the third period. Throw a crappy XL t-shirt into the stands? The crowd goes wild. Although, to be fair, there wasn’t much in the third period to cheer about anyway.
23. Did Blake Wheeler play tonight?
24. Zibanejad has cooled down offensively as of late, but I still would take him over Derek “It’s Hard to Play Against Other Teams’ Top Lines” Brassard any day. Speaking of, what’s Brassard doing these days? 3rd line?
25. Oh by the way, this is the Fox Woods Final Five.
26. How about little Landon Girardi taking the ice between periods? How cool was it to see him on the ice with daddy Dan watching/filming rink side? It seems just like yesterday we were watching baby Landon and Dan on HBO shooting pucks in their apartment. Heck, Landon stayed on his feet more than his dad does! I think I see a future defensive liability for the Rangers. I kid, I kid.
27. How about that Leafs/Canucks game the other night, eh? 157 PIMs in the third period. Holy shishkabob! Also, there’s nothing quite like a good ol’ fashioned goalie fight.
28. Please PLEASE vote this Tuesday. Your vote counts, no matter which side you’re on. Hey, these candidates could be worse… at least they haven’t proposed that we all have to wear name tags.

Your Three (sort of) Rangers Stars:

1.  JT Miller

2-4 tied, Hayes, Lundqvist, Buchnevich.

  1. Thank you. It was fun to do, but it also made me appreciate Carp even more. That’s not an easy task to break down the game, and Carp does it with way more depth and insight than I could ever muster.

  2. A very tired team found a way to win last night. Credit to the depth they have, and the coach for using it all. Zucc lead in forwards ice time with 17 minutes. All other forward played at least 11 minutes. Pirri had the least, and still managed 2 assists..

  3. I thought that was a pretty impressive one-time slapper by Hayes. Talk about feeling it. Hellebuyck was awful. Not only his glove is too low, he is also not covering the far post properly. I mentioned last night that Jets may want to think about trading Trouba for a real goaltender.

  4. Ilb,
The Trouba situation is a real mess for the Jets. The GM has hadled it about as poorly as one can. What is he proving at this point, other than his incompetence.

  5. Good job Yergs! One thought, skip a line between each item.
    .
Henk played great last night. Really saved their bacon. This could have been an 7-5 loss or 5-2 the other way if they switched goalies.
    .
While Zucc scored, that line is out of sync; one 3-2 rush does not dismiss the fact that Zika/THE need speed on that wing. (and not Couch)
    .
Staalled looked like he was on his 5th game in 8. Could barely handle the puck. Clendening looked good, can really pass the biscuit.
    .
You think Winny was tough on a Sunday night, wait until the Canucks on Election night…

  6. BDL- Trouba’s agent isn’t doing him any favors either. this is becoming an unnecessary peeing contest. Why not just take a one year deal, become arbitration eligible, and at least show what you have instead of sitting the whole year out? Not to mention he isn’t getting a penny.

    Like

  7. Because he does not want to play there. What is Chevedayoff proving right now? I’m going to punish this kid because he had the nerve to ask for a trade. Trouba is an asset that he should cash in. The team could use the help. Instead you have, let this be a lesson to all of you. Trade the kid, and get some help for your team. The GM is the one who is going to pay the price in the end if he does not move him. He will get fired.

  8. What will happen is either Cheveldayoff drops his trade demands or ( more likely, imo) Trouba signs a short term bridge. If he sits out this year, that’s just pure idiocy on both parts

  9. Great read Yergs, thanks! Also expected the boys have a hard time getting up for this one but they continue to be a force. Wasn’t sure Buch would survive being laid out like that by big Buff or that last shift. Great watching him gain experience and getting to show his skill!

  10. Good morning all! Great job Yergs! On the one hand, will be glad for game distraction Tuesday. On the other, there’s gonna be a lot of channel flipping and I’m out once polls close…stupid night to schedule a game.

  11. BDL, these are the rules of the CBA. the GM is enforcing his rights. The player is trying to escape the obligations that he has as a member of the NHLPA.

You have to remember that Winnipeg is not exactly a choice destination. If he caves on Trouba, what’s to stop future talent from doing the same thing?

  12. I am happy for the distraction the Rangers will provide Tuesday night. I have watched zero news since the campaigns started. Go overseas and regularly mocked by my friends and customers over there. “300 Million people and you guys come up with these 2?” Heading over there Saturday to be taunted a second time. Nice work Yergs. Thanks!

  13. Awesome write up Yergs the reviews and coffee are always the best in the morning! I would not want to see Zucc on the 4th line, but with all the forward depth? I must agree with SN Kreider & Zibanejad need speed and skill on that right side. We had a glimpse of it early on before The’s neck issues. Zucc would still get his PP time Buchnevich back with Kreider & Zika is the way to go!

  14. Thanx, Yergs. Great start to the season, but I think Carp is correct. The exploding O can easily disguise some dangerous sloppiness and inefficiencies on D. A good D in sports shows up nightly, a good O can sputter.

  15. Nice write up. @ilb2001 (and others) re Trouba – why do you want to give up the farm for a malcontent? So that when things aren’t going quite his way or maybe the next contract isn’t quite what he wants he pulls this baby crap again? No thanks, let somebody else have the headache and keep our assets.

  16. And you should all expect another brilliant summary from the E3. The E3’s prose can be compared to that of Granland Rice. Outlined against a dark black starry November night, the 3 horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore their names are bongs, body checker, and Hags2.0. But those are Aliases. Their real names are Hazy, Jay Tea, Gabby grabby do.

  18. RR2,
I knew that would be your argument ( setting a precedent), and I get that, but if a player is a dug in as Trouba why not cash in the asset and help the team. Doing nothing is not helping the Jets. They need good players. Trouba can get the a couple.

  19. Great pinch-hit, nice summary. But I can’t go along with the Brass-bashing — I thought he was an excellent Ranger during one of the best stretches in this franchise’s history. He’s now the first-line center off to a meh start on a meh team. I really like Zibanebomb, don’t get me wrong, even if it’s not clear yet if the trade was a win. In any event, I hope Brass gets a big hand when he visits in three weeks. He deserves one.

  20. But the asset is not playing, and you know that he will leave as soon as he can. Why not just help the team that is there? There season is already getting away from them, and the GM is going to pay the price for it.

  21. My favorite aspect of Boneheads ’16-’17 (other than our continued existence, of course) is the constant call for switching up lines and upgrade-trades. This year’s team gives us nothing to do otherwise. Literally. We can only hope they hit the skids so we can really cut loose on this half-fast weblog.

  22. E3,
I’d switch Nash, and Zucc. Eventually you would want Buchnevich back with Kreider, and Zibanijad, and Grabner on the 4th line. But you can’t do that right now. That line is to hot.

    Like

  23. I’d like nothing more than to not do anything. But by not doing anything, you’re basically pretty much practically, like, doing nothing. Expect for of this brilliant commentary in my guest blog after Saturday’s game.

  24. RR 2 – Not sure who your directing your snippy post to, but if it’s me…..As much sense as you wanting to split the hazy JT Grabby line I suppose…

    Like

  25. RR2 – but nothing in Hazy and JT’s past suggests that should even be happening. Those three have major chemistry and thei strengths play off each other perfectly. Hazy has soft hands, good finesse player; JT attacks the net, likes to bang bodies, good on the forecheck; and grabner skates like the wind, great on the forecheck as well. A perfect storm if you will

  26. BDL, what I see is a team that needs no fiddling with at all. Kreider and Zucc managed to net one last night somehow, didn’t they? Why on earth (other than to keep the comments rolling, which I support) would you tinker with one line that’s not quite perfect? You can’t do it without disrupting another. We just saw the so-called fourth line win the game yesterday, and so, what, change it quick before they do it again? Crazy pills.

  27. THE Zbad and Boo chef itch had great chemistry and timing. Zucc is killing that line. Put his slow moving, excellent vision, good passing skills with purée and Fast.

  28. I respectfully quote the honorable Blogfather’s (Don Carp) prescient reminder that the end of a winning streak features games that you are outplayed but win. Don’t think the Jets vastly outplayed them and it was game 5 in 8 days but these last two games didn’t pass the eye test. The scoreboard test? Definitely.
    .
Pirri as a 4C does not work in the Dzone. Last night’s performance was more evidence. Oscar looked stiff when he played but think he needs to be 4C and will be eventually.

You want to share that you support Clinton/Trump and that you are happy/upset with your candidate winning/losing, that’s all fine. But please no specific discussions of why you like one or the other.

  32. RR2 – the can is my quiet place. I often go and sit and think about life. Because I don’t really think the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It’s like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how – what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what’s stopping it, and what’s stopping it? So, RR2, what’s the end, you know, is my question to you.

  33. Eye test says this team could have lost a couple the same as they could have won 2 of the 3 they lost. The possession numbers aren’t all that impressive but still okay. Last night’s third period didn’t help that stat much.
I have no way to predict if it’s coming but I would think if/when they drop a couple of games AV will have to adjust the lineup a bit.
I think it’s beneficial to both Buchnevich and Zibanejad to be reunited but if it’s at the cost of a couple of balance anywhere I think you can live with a kid who’s playing fourth line and scored in back to back games and a center who has 9 points in 12 games. I guess the thought process is putting Zucc on the fourth line is counter productive. The storm I see brewing is Pirri at 4C. It’s just not going to last. Would be nice if it kept them above water until Jooris could come back but I feel as though we’ll see them come back to earth a bit in terms of offense soon.
ILB, maybe you can answer this question for me- is Lindberg not eligible for a conditioning assignment in Hartford? I think it’s much needed. He’s not going to get into the lineup enough without one and if he does will be an anchor.

    Like

  34. get another good break tomorrow as Vanc plays tonight. Like the lineup as is especially the balanced playing time. Except the captain whose time is a bit high. But pp time is not as tough as pk time. Good depth in organization for when guys get hurt.

  35. One thing I forgot to mention about the Jets: Dustin Byfuglien is going to die if they keep playing him the amount of minutes he is playing. Already not the most fit individual in the NHL, he can’t last going this hard for this long.

    Like

  36. James- he can be sent to Hartford on conditioning assignment. He has to consent to it, he will still be paid his NHL salary, and will count against the cap and roster limit. It can be no more than 14 days, and the league reserves its right to deny it if they fell it circumvents the CBA. In this case, I don’t see why they would. I believe they denied it some time ago in Grigorenki case.

  37. Some numbers to consider when debating sustainability of this offense: Shooting percentage as of today:
Michael Grabner and Jimmy Vesey > 30%
    Hayes and Pirri >20%
Zuccarello, Girardi (yes, Girardi), Nash, Holden, Miller, Fast, and Kreider) > 10 percent%

Safe bet that doesn’t go on much longer.

    Like

  38. ILB, Thanks, Knew you would be the guy to get an answer from on that. But it’s not even about cap relief etc. It’s just a matter of allowing him to get into game shape. As of now he’s going to be a part time player and even if that wasn’t the case he looked as though (at least to me) that he was going to need some time to find his game. I think it’s incredibly unfair to keep him in street clothes and expect him to step in and be at his best.

    Like

  39. Exactly, Alex. I believe they rejected Grigorenko because they felt Buffalo was circumventing the CBA since Grigorenko can’t be sent to minors because of his age. In Lindberg’s case, the only question the NHL may have is whether NY is trying to avoid placing him on waivers. But since he’s coming back from surgery, it shouldn’t be an issue

  44. Alex – I was thinking the same thing about Trouba, Given what some other young d-men have signed for Trouba is a bargain for this year and next. The problem is how much of a pain is going to be in two years. Of course, if he goes to a winning organization he might be more willing to do a deal.

With that said, the Jets and Rangers still don’t match up. I still see the Rangers going the rental way come the deadline or perhaps someone with another year on a reasonable deal.

    Like

  45. Don’t forget their expansion draft issue if they acquire Trouba. They will have to buy out Girardi, which means that in two years, when Trouba is up for a new deal and looking for 6MM plus, we will be carrying 3.6MM of dead cap space via Girardi. That’s a lot of money tied up in ostensibly one player.

    Like

  46. So trouba signed….anyone think it might be a sign and trade? Perhaps it’s due to Myers being out (I think he’s still out).

Of course if Myers is out for a long time, you’d think trouba would be able to do a little better $$$ than what he did.

Seemed like management held all the cards so to speak.

    Like

  47. I’m not sure this contract makes him easier to trade. This is a deal he would’ve gotten with any other team he was traded to. He had no leverage. Now, this allows Winnipeg to assess the situation at their own pace, and get the best deal possible.

    Like

  48. 4-6 weeks on Hamonic, yes. Islanders may have a new coach by then. If they were smart, a new GM, too. But they aren’t, so they won’t.

I think this deal makes it less likely that Trouba is traded any time soon. What’s Winnipeg’s incentive? They’ve got the player for 2 years, minimum. If I were them, I’d be working like crazy to move Myers.

  49. Great review again. I’m thinking the 2 year deal was something to do with the Las Vegas Black Desert Rat Silver Knight Aces and the expansion draft?
Either way, i don’t see Trouba seeing that deal out.

  50. Peg has best leverage with their malcontent at the trade deadline, assuming he plays and plays well until then. Still have no interest in dumping multiple young players to take him on, along with G’s dead cap space. Interesting game for the Rangers tonight. Not your typical “trap game”, but the Canucks have the worst offense and worst goal differential. Combine that with this being a game against a lousy Western Conference team and the last home game before the team heads to western Canada (with a visit at the TortsJackets on the way home) this game as all the earmarks to be a stinker.

Hopefully, the Fishsticks wore the Canucks down for us. I am guessing Jacob Markstrom is in nets since Ryan Miller played at Brooklyn.
