Rangers 3, Oilers 1; Post-game Notes

When I was a kid growing up in Staten Island, every day I would read the Staten Island Advance for its report of the Rangers game and to check the box scores around the NHL.   Often times, the reports of the games played on the West Coast would be incomplete, stating that the printed information was only accurate as of the time of publication.  I used to bristle and get angry that the paper wouldn’t wait until the games were finished and publish accurate information.  While I still think that the Advance was derelict in its duties as its sole function is to provide the news, as a solo, part-time blogger with full time professional job and family with two young children, I certainly understand that desire to just call it a night and go to sleep.  I think what I will do in the future for any late games, including this Tuesday, will be inspired by those reports of my youth.  I will post a review of what I had seen to the point where I call it a night and we can move forward from there.

Below are the post-game notes from the Rangers.  Special thanks to Stranger Nation for the suggestion.

Team Notes

  • WINS BY THE DOZEN – The Rangers’ 12 wins through 16 games this season are tied for the most the team has earned in the first 16 games of one season in franchise history. New York has now earned 12 wins in the first 16 games of a season twice in franchise history (2015-16 and 2016-17).
  • BACK-TO-BACK – In their last 85 back-to-back sets (since the start of the 2010-11 season), the Rangers have posted a 56-23-6 record in the second game of the set. New York has posted a 3-0-0 record in the second game of a back-to-back set in 2016-17.
  • GOALS GALORE – The Rangers have registered 65 goals through the first 16 games of the 2016-17 season. New York has recorded at least 65 goals in the first 16 contests of a season for the first time since 1990-91. The Rangers lead the NHL in goals per game this season (4.06).
  • SAVING THE DAY – In the last two games, Henrik Lundqvist and Antti Raanta combined to a post a .973 SV% (73 saves on 75 shots).
  • THREE’S COMPANY – New York has registered three or more goals in 13 of 16 games this season. The Rangers have recorded at least three goals in 13 of their first 16 games in one season for the first time since 1995-96.
  • MAKING THE DIFFERENCE – The Rangers lead the NHL in goal differential this season (plus-29; 65 goals for, 36 goals against). The Rangers’ plus-29 goal differential through 16 games this season is the second-best goal differential the team has posted through the first 16 games of any season in franchise history (1971-72; plus-34).
  • ALBERTA BOUND – The Rangers defeated the Flames and Oilers, in Calgary and Edmonton, in two consecutive days for the first time in franchise history (Nov. 12 – Nov. 13, 2016). New York had previously defeated Calgary and Edmonton on the road as part of the same road trip once in franchise history (Dec. 14 – Dec. 16, 2014).
  • WINNING WAYS – The Rangers have won seven of their last eight games (7-1-0; dating back to Oct. 30 vs. Tampa Bay. In addition, the Rangers have won 10 of their last 12 games (10-2-0; dating back to Oct. 22 at Washington) and 11 of their last 14 contests (11-3-0; dating back to Oct. 17 vs. San Jose).
  • ROAD WARRIORS – The Rangers are tied for the NHL lead – and lead Eastern Conference teams – in road wins since the start of the 2013-14 season (76).
  • TWO GOOD – The Rangers have allowed two goals or fewer in 10 of the last 13 games, dating back to Oct. 19 vs. Detroit. The Blueshirts have won 36 of the last 37 games in which they allowed two goals or fewer, dating back to Dec. 15, 2015 (36-1-0).
  • FINISHING THE JOB – The Blueshirts have posted a 10-0-0 record in games which they have held a lead entering the third period this season. Since the start of the 2010-11 season, the Rangers have posted a 177-3-8 record in 188 regular season games in which they have held a lead entering the third period.
  • SECOND HELPING – New York outscored Edmonton, 1-0, in the second period of tonight’s contest. Thus far this season, the Rangers have posted a plus-21 goal differential in the second period (29-8).
  • BURNING OIL – The Rangers have earned at least one point in 15 of their last 20 road games against the Oilers, dating back to Jan. 23, 1989 (12-5-2-1). The Blueshirts played their first game at Rogers Place, Edmonton’s new arena, tonight.

Three Stars on Broadway

  • Michael Grabner registered two goal and recorded four shots on goal. Grabner is the second Ranger since 1990-91 to tally 10 even strength goals within the first 16 games of a season (the other is Rick Nash – 2014-15). Grabner has tallied a goal/point in five of the last eight games, recording 10 points (eight goals, two assists) over the span. Grabner leads the NHL in even strength goals this season (10). He has eclipsed his goal total from last season, and he leads the Rangers in goals in 2016-17. In addition, Grabner is one of five NHL players who have registered at least 10 goals this season (along with Patrik Laine, Sidney Crosby, Mark Scheifele, and David Pastrnak), and he is tied for second in the NHL in goals this season. Grabner is one of six Rangers who have tallied at least 10 goals in the first 16 games of one season since 2005-06 (Jaromir Jagr – 2005-06; Brendan Shanahan – 2006-07; Marian Gaborik – 2009-10; Brandon Dubinsky – 2010-11; Rick Nash – 2014-15).
  • Antti Raanta stopped 38 of 39 shots he faced to earn his fourth win of the season. Raanta has made at least 30 saves in 16 games in his career, and he has posted a 14-1-1 record, along with a 1.56 GAA, a .956 SV%, and 3 SO in those contests. Raanta has earned a win in each of his first four decisions in 2016-17 (he was not credited with the decision on Nov. 8 vs. Vancouver).
  • Dan Girardi tallied the game-winning goal, led all skaters with four blocked shots, and led the Rangers with three hits in 22:47 of ice time. Girardi leads Rangers defensemen in goals this season (three), and he has notched a point in four of the last seven games he has played (two goals, two assists). Each of Girardi’s three goals this season have been the game-winning goal in the contest, and he is tied for the NHL lead in game-winning goals this season.

Blueshirt Breakdown

  • J.T. Miller registered an assist and posted a plus-one rating. He has recorded a point in 11 of 16 games in 2016-17, registering a team-high 15 points (five goals, 10 assists). He leads the Rangers in games with a point this season. Miller is the only NHL player who has registered at least 15 points and a plus-14 rating this season.
  • Kevin Hayes notched an assist, won eight of 16 faceoffs (50%), and posted a plus-one rating in 16:33 of ice time. Hayes has tallied a point in seven of the last eight games, registering 11 points (four goals, seven assists) over the span. In his NHL career, 43 of Hayes’ 58 assists have been primary assists, and 80 of his 95 career NHL points have been primary points (either a goal or a primary assist).
  • Rick Nash recorded an assist, registered four shots on goal, and was credited with three blocked shots. He has tallied 10 points (six goals, four assists) in the last 12 games, including six points (four goals, two assists) in the last eight contests.
  • Kevin Klein notched an assist, was credited with two blocked shots, and posted a plus-two rating in 20:41 of ice time. Klein has tallied four assists/points in the last five games.

  1. Unrelated, this morning I had one of the worst headaches I’ve ever had. It’s starting to fade now, and I’m getting an actual sense of relief in my brain, like when you sit down after being on your feet all day.

  2. The original plan was to watch the first period last night, then watch the 2nd and 3rd on Rangers in 60 this morning and write a review during my commute. It was an ambitious plan, but the headache prevented all of that.

  3. James, I posted every day that I needed a review for Sunday.

No big deal now. It’s done.

I think I can hit every game by myself for the rest of the month. The one exception is potentially this Friday against the Blue Jackets.

  4. not just for all his goals but for his speed, versatility and reasonable cap hit they should protect Grabner.

    which leaves these guys unprotected

    nash
    lindberg.
    fast
    pirri
    jooris

    on defense
    klein
    holden

    and raanta

I think raanta might be the guy taken.

  5. Not that it matters, but I haven’t even thought about the expansion draft protection yet. I’ll probably wait until after the trade deadline to evaluate and provide my “expert” analysis 😉

Was it ever determined if nmc players must be protected or is that tbd? If they do, I buy out Girardi regardless of moves.

    I agree re raanta

  6. Sorry, Doodie. I can certainly relate to your 12:02pm post. The last week has been a busy one between school and getting some things done around the house in preparation for the holidays. Just let me know if you need Fri and can’t get anyone else.

  7. Stop worrying about the expansion draft. There will be so many roster changes on so many different teams before then that it is a fool’s errand to try and project it from now.

That all being said: Raanta will not be the one taken. There will be a lot of good goaltenders available. As of now, one of Marc Andre Fleury or Matt Murray will be available. One of Howard or Mrazek will be available. One of Luongo or Reimer will be available. Any one of those goaltenders would be selected ahead of Raanta on a one year deal.

  8. Alex – I still don’t see Raanta being the guy going to LV. Too many eligible goalies that are either better, or have more upside. Barring moves, you’ll see one of Bishop/Vasilievski, Fleury/Murray, Mrazek/Howard, Varlamov/Pickard, and then there are some good backups with starter upside and prospects who have more than two pro-seasons like Subban and Grubauer. I think Raanta is a hell of a goalie, and if I’m a GM I take a long look at ANY goalie that’s played under Benoit Allaire. But there are just too many other more attractive goalie options. And if I’m Vegas and I can get Kevin Klein or even Rick Nash (dependent on how he finishes out this year), I’m not wasting my time on Auntie.

NYR might have won the battle but the war will be one of attrition with too many games like that getting smacked around like a red headed rented mule. Very Torts like 2nd/3rd periods but back to back and missing some players will lead to that.

  10. I just think Vegas takes 1 starter with big money contract. One good backup at lower cost. Third guy would be either ahl guy or someone that can be flipped for another player or pick. They could flip a Raanta to a team like Dallas as an example. They won’t even have an ahl team for first year or two so I really think they trade one of the goalies they draft.

  11. I’m also bringing up expansion in context of importance of Grabner. We all saw how much we missed Hags and how much he helped Pitt. Grabner can play any line and does so without complaint. Much rather keep him at that cap hit than those I listed above and theirs.

  12. Agreed about the expansion draft. There’s going to be different players in the mix between now and then plus you have to remember that as far as Grabner is concerned, what he’s doing right now is impressive and fun to watch but he’s not a superstar on the rise. Right team right system right time. We’ll all be exhausted if we worry about that expansion draft from now until July.

SN, I think he’s just adjusting like a lot of rookies do. he’ll be fine, the hockey IQ is too high for him to become disastrous. Not to mention to this point-
    Vesey- 7-4-11
    Matthews-6-6-12

  14. James – by comparing Grabner to Hags I’m stressing his versatility, low cap hit and most importantly his speed. I’d take those over Lindberg and Fast to name 2. Nash I’d risk since if he’s taken we do save a ton of cap space.

  16. I hear you, Alex. It’s not that I’m saying he isn’t important to the team, I just don’t think he’s someone you worry about in an expansion draft. Especially one that’s over 7 months away on a team that is going to go through tweaks and changes and all that good stuff between now and then.

  17. So I guess we’ll remain in the dark in regards to these “spasms” everyone is having? No Kreider for the rest of this road trip and maybe no Buchnevich either. No call ups as of yet for tomorrow night. Hoping this isn’t going to be an ongoing issue for either of them this year.

    Like

  18. If Buch can go, we have 12, and being that they’ve been pretty vocal about wanting to save all that cap room for a rainy day, we probably won’t get anybody. We’ll probably hear today, though. If they have any doubt about Buch, someone will come up. Maybe we’ll see Boo Nieves come in for the 4th line and have Pirri on the wing on a higher line.
At least after tomorrow we’re back east in case of emergency.

  19. Grabber is playing way above anything Hags every showed here albeit within an extremely small sample size, I am was and remain and HUGE Hags fan.

These types of players make everyone better on their line and me thinks Grabber has much better mitts, while Hags was a better possession machine on the wall. Grabber is Mr October (and November)

  23. Grabby is such a great surprise, but my guess is he will continue his success in some manner now that his upper range has been discovered by not only AV & staff, himself.
Plus I just had a look at the age… 29 for him 28 for Hags.
We all miss Hags, but much less now
