Game Review: Rangers win 6-2 over Avs

Denver is known as the mile high city. Sitting 5280 feet above sea level, first time visitors, not used to the thinner air, are often surprised to find that breathing is labored if you’re a weekend athlete hitting tennis balls, playing 3 on 3 hoops, or 4 on 4 touch football. Visiting NHL players, are not nearly as affected, but do labor more than they would in their home rink.

One of my wife’s sister’s families lived in Denver for 25 years until a recent move to DC and still own a mountain retreat in Winter Park which is in the Rockies. On one visit, we went for a monster hike going up to 14,000 feet, the highest I’d ever been, literally. An interesting thing happened as I neared the summit. For every 3 steps I took, I had to stop and catch my breath and I thought how in the holy hell would anyone climb Mt Everest, at 29,000 plus? Especially with no oxygen? I was sucking so much wind, I was worried that I was going to drop dead, if not from getting enough air, then from embarrassment.

But I survived. As did the New York Rangers on this brief road swing and have now won three in a row and nine of the last 12.

1) This could have been one of those omen games. Rangers have one of the best road records in the league, the Avs had lost nine in a row at home, it was New Year’s Eve, Hank was starting and count off the flu, and the Rangers’ siblings were along on the trip and possibly the team and sibs partied a bit after beating the yotes 4-3 Thursday night. Well, not to worry. Make that 10 losses in a row for the team based in Colorado as the Rangers won in a rout.

2) For the second consecutive game, a Ranger had a hat trick. Against the Coyotes, it was Matt Pumpernickel who scored three PP goals making him only the third Ranger in their long, if not storied, history to do that. The pump joined Mike Gartner and The Captain Mark Messier as the other two. This game it was THE Kreider potting three.

3) THE’s first goal was due to some great hustle by Zuccini as he kept the puck in, sliding a pass to Stepan on the wall, who in turn  threw a blind spin around centering pass to a streaking Kreider who was cruising into the crease.  The puck bounced off him then hit the Avs D man before making its way to back of the net tying the score at one.

4) Colorado scored first on their first shot of the game as Ribbit lost the face-off  (a big problem all night long) back to the point where Barrie wristed a shot that Hank seemed to track but it was deflected by Cody Macloud, a pain in the azz if there ever was one, continuing on thru about seven players and 14 legs before going five-hole. Not a good start.

5) One thing about this Ranger team is that they have no problem if the other team scores first. For the most part, the Rangers just buckle down, ignore the scoreboard and get right to work. I don’t have the stats, but I’d be curious to see their record when down 1-0 and even 2-0. Certainly the Rangers are playing with a lot of confidence to win as many games as they have when given up the early lead.

6) The season opened with Zman, Kreider, and Boosh as the hot line. Then Haze, JT, and Grabner took over as the go to trio. Now, it’s THE, Step, and Zucc playing lights out offensive hockey. It’s hard to argue that the Rangers, currently the third best team in the Metro, the third best team in the East, and the third best team in the league are not a major threat to make a deep run once Gnasher, Zman, and Boosh are healthy. Seriously, what team has this much depth? If the D can continue getting help from the back checking forwards, the team continues scoring as many goals as they’ve done to date, and get timely sold play from they’d net minders, I wouldn’t bet against our boys come springtime.

7) It wasn’t all that long ago that the teams in the west were best and the teams in the east were least. Those days, however, are in the past. The west is worst and the east are the beasts by a country mile. The Blue Jackets might not lose again. The Penguins continue to put up win after win. And the Rangers, ignoring that 2 game slide in the abyss vs Pens and Wild, are not showing signs of going away.

8) The Rangers, via Kreider’s second of the game, took a 2-1 lead after THE scored a PP goal on a tip from a shot by Zucc. Lately, the Rangers are scoring bunches of goals with the man advantage. Four against the Yotes and two more vs the Avs. Now while it’s true those two teams are cellar dwellers, to be fair, the yotes had the best home PK in the league earlier in the season. And the Avs? Well they’ve now lost 10 in a row at home, so there’s that.

9) The Rangers were hardly dominant in the first period and with under two minutes to play in the first, were probably quite happy to go into the second period up by one. But, with a bit over 1 minute left in the first, after losing a defensive zone faceoff, again, the Avs controlled the puck, and eventually it was back to the point where another deflection best Hank to tie the score at 2. I can’t fault the King for either goal.

10) In the second period, the Rangers began to dominate possession time and peppered the Avs net with several good chances. But it was a bad goal that gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead. JT Miller came screaming down the left wing and fired a rocket over the far shoulder, glove side, for the GWG. I see dead people as once again I correctly predicted who’d score the GWG.

11) The game was effectively over at this point. Poor Avs have major negative puck luck. They couldn’t buy a third goal even though they could have had at least three more. Hank was solid. Outstanding positioning. The puck was hitting him in the arm, the chest, the pads. Good game for the King coming off the flu bug. Will he ascend to the throne and lead his team to a cup? Time will tell. He’s been spotty at best, and bad at worst, but he and Raanta are a potent 1-2 in net.

12) The Avs might have lost on the scoreboard, but they sure did win the gurney count. JT was crushed in open ice on a clean hit but nevertheless drew a penalty. Pumpernickel was smashed in the corner and didn’t draw a penalty. Hey those NHL refs. THE was crushed into the boards. Shay was pounded a few times. McD was cross checked hard and his stick flew up nicking an Avs player yet it was the Rangers called for 2 minutes. For the Rangers, Zucc threw a nasty hip check on Mackinnon at center ice and he tumbled like dice on a craps table. Nice hit. Very nice check.

13) Ingila is amazing. His rookie season, which was Chelios’ third year in the league was a long long time ago. Twenty years in the NHL. Still a tough power forward. His sale date might have expired, but if the price were dirt cheap, he’d be a welcome addition come the playoffs.

14) Derek Stepan, after a seriously slow start, is the team scoring leader and playing excellent hockey. His line has really jelled. What on earth is going to happen once the team is fully healthy and can remain healthy? For once, line combos will be a fun exercise. What to do? What to do? Here’s one thought! Maybe good, maybe bad!

15) Gnasher – Zman – Boosh

16) THE – Step – Zucc

17)  JT – Haze – Grabber

18) VC – Pirri/Lindberg Pumpernickel/Couch

19) Keeping step’s line together makes sense. Reuniting Haze with JT and Grabby makes sense. Putting  the three injured amigos together makes sense. And that 4th line looks like it could score some goals.

20) Kreider with serious mitts  gets the Hattie on a really good tip off Step’s shot for the second PP goal. VC scores on a tremendous finish. He’s got a soft pair of hands. Rangers win 6-2 and its on to MSG and let’s win there.

My three ranger stars:

1. THE;    2. JT;    3. Step/Zucc

Your three Ranger Stars? I have no ******* idea. This truly is a HAV.

Happy New Year my bruthas and sistas. Especially to our fearless leaders – Blog Captain Ricardo Carputha, my brutha from anutha mutha and Blog Asst. Captain  RR2.

Lets go Rangers. Bring it home boys.

  1. A review that will last a lifetime! It’s good to see our boys beating bad teams, should be a given! Dubi and Co. 73-5-4? Could happen!

  2. Only Jesper Fast could play 16 minutes and pitch a no hitter. No shots, no hits, no attempted shots, no takeaways, no nothing. The only guy on the team to have such a line. Even Hank showed up on it with a giveaway. He did however get an assist by dumping the puck into the zone. Very skilled play. What a joke Fast is.

  3. Great review of a blowout that wasn’t one until the 3rd. NYR PP Strong. Avs…not so much. Can’t stand Perry Como always plays well against NYR. 6 goals and only 1 pt by NYR Dmen; secondary assist by McD on THE’s 2nd.
    .
A good onions game in the AV ‘turn the other cheek’ approach to physical hockey. If more physical teams are going to take runs at yours, need to make them pay on the scoreboard. Avs have some heavy hitters but may be a vestige of days gone by. Outside of Barrie, cannot remember any of their D.
    .
Henk had some really strong saves which just makes his prior two efforts more troubling. He had the flu? OK, why didn’t Rantaa Clause play? I was away so missed any write up on it but blaming the flu is a little weird.
    .
THE is back to all caps status. This man amongst boys just needs to simplify his game and to straight to the net. That first goal was pretty funny the way the puck and the D-man bounced off him like he was a Marvel comics beast.
    .
18 and 22 had rough games. Everyone who was jumping on the Holdon band wagon needs to watch the tape of this game. He had a rough one as did his partner Stalled. Still think the pick up was a huge steal and he was mostly played well after the first 10 to 15 games when he really stunk in his own zone leading the team in giveaways to prime scoring chances, which is something with G on your team. RD1 still priority #1 for Commish Gorton
    .
JT miller – kid has guts. It was an elbow he was hit with on the penalty to Ivan Drago. Funny how the elbow hit him in the chest and almost caved in his clavicle. Came back and scored 2; good on you kid. And that slapper that went 150 mph according to esteemed mathematician Ron DooGay.
    .
Kleiner better, but McD plays for both out there. Shea is trying to make up for mental mistakes with his speed, getting him out of position.
    .
Last season it was talked about how McBeast should play some to supplement declining Boil and G (not because McBeast is Chris Pronger Jr, but because the other two needed some time off). A similar situation has arisen with Clendening which is all the more puzzling because you have a young skilled Offensive Dman, not the supposed throwback neanderthal, who is waiting in the press box. Cannot understand how this kid is not playing for Girardi every third or fourth game. For those not following along closely at home, Done G has become Redden.
    .
Upward and onward in ’17. Happy, healthy and prosperous new years for you and yours!!

  4. D will be a problem against good teams. Burden falls on forwards to help out. May work when everyone gets healthy. Not sure why Clendening couldn’t have played last light. DanG not going to get better by playing more. Clendening may.

  5. SN,
You mentioned trying to get a right side Dman. I think most of us here agree that that is a need. If all forwards are healthy, which one would you be willing to move to get the right side Dman?

  6. Hank was better but thought the second goal was preventable. On (12) thought I saw quite a few hits blue line/neutered zone by JT and others. But that was a crushing hit JT took and testament to his toughness to bounce back like he did. Ron D was wrong, that was at least 200 mph! What seems to be a constant of sorts this season is that the team has one line going bonkers while the others are far quieter. Is the 4th due up next?

  7. Great job, E3. Thank you for the review.

Hopefully we get healthy and stay that way in the new year. We must be close to getting Nash, Zika and Buch back by now?

  8. They had me worried for a while. Then they dominated the second period and all was right with the world.

I will say this about Girardi, when he takes a shot it’s usually on net unlike most of the d-men who are clanging it off the back boards.

Good to see Miller’s hustle rewarded with a couple of goals WITH THE GOALIE IN NET! He does not belong on the 4th line.

So, Puemple had the game of his life against the worst team in the league. Now, can they send him to Hartford when Nash comes back?

I know it’ll never happen, but McDonagh really deserves mention for the Norris. All the voters look at is goals and assists and he’s not going to get recognition with a paltry 2 goals. However, he carries that defense on his back. Watching him every game gives you appreciation of his play.

Bdl, Fast had that nice play where he stickhandled through a couple of players and went to the net. He just got the puck tipped when he was about to shoot, but it was a nice play. So, at least there’s that.

SN – very nice write up yourself, tho done as a regular post.

Bulldog – Fast might just score 30 goals this year, but the again, he might not finish with 3.

    Like

  10. Cross check – That was a good play that Fast made. Wasn’t much else, but still. Wearing #19, he reminds me a lot of Jean Ratelle except for the skating, shooting, passing, stick-handling parts of his game.

  11. BDL – interesting issue; with the impending Expansion draft the trade market may not command the asking price of prior years. There is no RD1 out there that would make me want to trade any young forward talent or really any RD1 IMHO at all.
    .
The hope is Gorton can pry a righty D with PP/puck moving skills that they could expose in draft (or not depending on player) Cody Franson is my choice. Not sure whey he is moved so frequently but has a good shot, Puck mover and plays the AV way, i.e. not too physical (and Buffalo will be out of it very early). He does seem to be the only UFA out there save for New Ro’s prodigal son.
    .
Shatty supposedly will warrant $8M per so that is just a fantasy, wouldn’t do that even if Stalled and Done G were making league min. New Ro be damned.
    .
Reality is the NYR two anchor D contracts require 9 very skilled forwards that supplement D issues which, if all healthy, NYR has on its roster.
    .
Here is a link to an interesting article discussing The Wild’s challenge with a deep blue line and a goalie playing very well in reference to the upcoming draft. Could be a trade partner but not sure what they need from us; http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/18357162/nhl-expansion-draft-plan-minnesota-wild-centers-deep-talented-blue-line

  12. Great job, E3. Must have had some numb feet.

FYI, Rangers 10-7 when opponent scores first. I don’t know the record when they trail 2-0 … and am too lazy to research it.

Remember, kids, any RH D-man they get has to be an upgrade on Girardi and Klein, or what’s the point? And there really aren’t a lot of those out there. To get a legit top four RHD, it’s going to take more than Couch or Lindberg or Couch and Lindberg. A lot more. Then there are the contract considerations — they probably are going to have to chase a rental — and the expansion draft considerations.

I frankly think Gorton will have to perform magic to get it done.

  13. My trip to Glendale wore me out so much that I watched the ball drop at 9 PM local time. At least I didn’t snooze until the Rangers won.

  14. Carp,
I think we are talking about a bigger trade than just a rental. A trade that would get you a top 4 righty, but cost you one of, Miller, Hayes, Zucc,nKreider, Buchnevich, or Vesey. One of those guys would be the realistic cost of doing business. My opinion, and it has wavered some, is that Zucc would be the guy.

  15. Great NYD morning read.

Though, I’ve read this blog & the previous Papa Carp blog prior, I still miss a name here & there.

How about an E3 blog post listing all the various nicknames associated with the real names. And a hyper link in each review to that post when “Someone”, writes reviews using mostly Boneheaded nicknames?

  16. Thanks, E3, for the write-up. Amazing effort by you pinch-journalists to keep this HAV moving along. I loved your observation that “Pirri/Lindberg Pumpernickel/Couch” could score a lot of goals, what with four guys 🙂 And one of these days, Fast will crack the Bonehead starting line-up, having long since become an irreplaceable on AVs. Someone here, ahem, tried to claim he had a nothing night, for example, having completely missed perfect dump-and-check set-up on Miller’s second goal. Great play. And the guy backchecks his ass off and plays PK night after night. Key player.

  20. SN mentioned it and I’ll add to it regarding JT Miller. How much of his poor play, and demotion, due to the pounding he’s taken blocking shots? There were at least 5 that had it been MLB players, they’d have been on the 60 day DL. That dude is tougher than nails. It was great seeing to score twice last night. Love for him to get 30 this year.

Jeez, the things you like to rave about with Fast. A routine dump in, a play that happens at least 50 times a game. The Colorado Dman takes Fast out to leave the puck for his partner. Only for some reason the Dmans partner stops and the puck ends up going to Oscar. Who then makes the play to Miller. But yeah, brilliant play by a future HOFer.

That’s because it wouldn’t go 7 games. If healthy the Penguins will be a tough out.

Columbus is very hot now but now is not when the playoffs begin

    Like

  23. Carp any top player traded will affect the offense. But you have to figure the team itself will be better balanced. A top RD does two things- it significantly improves the top 4, and it gives Mcdonagh a steady full time partner which he’s never really had. To me that’s worth the sacrifice.

  24. Alex – I disagree. The jackets beat them recently rather easily. Sid the skid earns no respect with CBJ (unlike the way the NYR treat him so deferentially) and the giant bulls eye on his jersey will be pounded again again especially by Dubi who hates his guts with a passion.

  25. Exactly Coos. We saw the captain playing like a beast to start the season and it seemed to fade a bit after that game against Pittsburgh where he had that ridiculous call against him and they were blown out for the first time-6-2. I firmly believe that we’d see more of the McD from the first 10 games or so if he had someone reliable beside him

    Like

  26. When Staal was able to keep up w Sid he not only shut him down but tourmented him physically at times. Those days are over. Much like the stretch where he and Girardi made OV a non factor in regular and post season play

Well we’ll see. The hottest team in December does not mean a heck of a lot in April, May and June.

Penguins would not need 7 to beat them.

  28. Alex – hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And I hope beyond hope that if they were to meet, the jackets crush them physically and on the scorecard …. I hate the Penguins. HATE them.

  30. BDL, if you don’t understand Fast’s value to the team, or even to the goal in question, I’d have to assume you understand only the flashier aspects of the game, the snipe, the loud hit, the big save… I will bow to your superior understanding, though, of the Bonehead ethos: though shalt have thine whipping boy!

  31. Great review!!

Glad someone else brought up the righty D situation, I always seem to get lambasted when I bring it up;)

Re trades…I saw an interesting blurb this morning that jvr and landeskog could both be had for a young d man (assuming the d man would be part of a package…lol package), would either one interest either of you guys?

While I think zucc adds more to this team than just points (#intangibles) and he has one of the more appropriate salaries (ie a good one), he disappears too much in physical games and the playoffs…I’d move him.

    Like

  32. When Zucc disappeared from the playoffs by taking a puck to the head, the Rangers run was badly damaged as well. Anyone can be traded, and Zucc may get some return, but it would take some guts to ship this heart-and-soul guy.

  35. It was a simple dump and chase, Norm. My gosh you talk about the play like it has never been done before. Fast value is in playing 8 to 10 minute a night, killing penalties. Not 16 minutes a night. When you play 16 minutes a night more is expected of you.

    Like

  36. Fast is an established 14+ TOI forward, will gets more time when the Rangers are killing penalties or defending leads (most notably 1-goal leads late); gets less time when they’re chasing the game. Busts it, always, does the little things right, can play on all four lines to help with injuries. And a great contract to boot. AV plays him a lot becau… oops, forgot, AV’s an idiot.

Norm – I’m a huge GMen fan but I wouldn’t exactly say the Giants’ offense strikes the fear in any team this season. Strange given ODB Jr is the best player in the league, Perkins is a damn good runner that finally got to start (nephew I think, of Cowboy great Don Perkins), and Sterling S. is an #2. His offensive scheme is bone dry boring and if not for the D, they’d be 5-11.

  42. The Giants offense is not good, but it may not have to be with this defense. The streaky Manning is always a danger if he gets hot, obviously, and McAdoo seems to have been obsessed with establishing some sort of run game with a very average offensive line. Perkins can actually spot a hole, and Jennings can reliably not fumble. I think the key is for Cruz to rediscover his ability to get open, so that it’s not all on Beckham and Shepard. And it would be nice to get JPP back. Vereen would have been nice…

  44. Just glad the Giants don’t have to play in Seattle next week. Eli and th Giants have fared poorly in that Stadium against that team.

My beef with the Gmen play calling is that it’s incredibly vanilla. It seems they only have 6 or 7 offensive plays. And running Jennings into the middle of the line for no gain seemingly every first down is pathetic. Mcadoo isn’t supposed to be an O genius. I don’t see it. The offense last year was much more potent and Sterling and Perkins werent on that team. Always thought Coughlin was the one holding the reins back – but now I think Ben is the one that stymies the O.

  46. The sad thing about the NY Giants offense is if goals were td’s, the NYR have probably scored more in any 16 game stretch so far this season. Eli probably has us right where he wants us – ready to throw him under the bus again so he can have another magical run and make Cheese and Patriothead’s explode.

  47. G-men diversion- I think Eli is so pick and fumble prone that now McAdoo is inclined to turn him into a “game manager” as long as the game is close and then roll the dice at the end of the game. It remains to be seen if the D can hold them in games in the playoffs and if they can get lucky at the end. Eli is truly “trick or treat” at this point. He is the decisive player in most games, but, not always in a positive way. Clearly last night they were happier kicking the FG and letting the D go back on the field than giving Eli a shot at the TD and a possible TO.
