Rangers at Flyers…It’s Go Time!

Game 41

Rangers at Flyers – 8:00 PM NBCSN

The Rangers stunk so bad at MSG last night that they’ve been chased out of the city to a city worthy of their stench: Philadelphia. It’s very disconcerting that they’ve played so poorly at times, especially since this is the halfway point of the season.

Everyone really liked E3’s reviews, so I am going to take a page out of the NHL’s marketing playbook and change it back to my review.  Clearly, this is a HAV.

Tonight’s possible lineup for the Rangers (26-13-1):

Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Mats Zuccarello

Jimmy Vesey-Kevin Hayes-Michael Grabner

JT Miller-Oscar Lindberg-Jesper Fast

Nicklas Jensen-Marek Hrivik-Brandon Pirri

Ryan McDonagh-Brady Skjei

Adam Clendening-Kevin Klein

Nick Holden-Dan Girardi

The big news, of course, is that Marc Staal is out tonight and Saturday with an upper body injury. The Rangers have been pretty forthcoming this year with their injuries so it’s a bit odd to go with the “upper body” label and saying he’s definitely out Saturday as well. It could be an even longer absence.

Interestingly,Brady Skjei moves up to the right side with McDonagh, a pair that was particularly strong in the playoffs. It’s a bit of a surprise, however, as the left handed Staal is coming out of the lineup for the right handed Clendening. To then also move the left handed Skjei to the right side is not a change I expected.

Lundqvist gets the start tonight. He should be well rested after being off last night. What’s that? He was in? Oh no.

Rick Nash is getting closer to returning but it remains to be seen if he comes back on Saturday against Columbus. There are still no definitive timetables on Buchnevich or Zibanejad. Buchnevich supposedly just needs to regain his conditioning and he might get it via a conditioning stint in the AHL during the bye* week.

For the Flyers (20-14-5),the story is about their recent struggles after their ten game win streak. They now sit only 3 points ahead of Tampa and Toronto for the final wild card spot. Toronto holds two games in hand. Steve Mason gets the start.

Don’t forget to tell everyone you know and to follow me on Twitter @rangersreport2. And don’t forget to vote for your three stars after the game!

  1. Saw the Flyers firsthand over the weekend and they had a ton of shots against the Ducks. Hopefully we see a more focused Ranger squad.

  2. Going to be a tough one tonight and you know Milbury is just hoping for us to fail. Hope we disappoint him.

  5. Gotta give the Philthy Phaithful credit – they are loud and there is a real atmosphere at this game. MSG sucks.

  7. Did NBCSN poop the bed for anybody else? Second period started with the screen breaking up like crazy, and I’ve been stuck on “Coverage will resume shortly” since then.

  8. unless Hank implodes in 2nd half of game, one of his best this year. Great move by AV to play him tonight. Perhaps he needs to play more. Very sharp so far.

  10. Speaking of sell outs in Philly, first time in a long time there have been some empty seats at MSG up high, on the end, in the old blues, certain games.

  11. Rangers players will be on the stationery bikes after game. Full work out. Playing Torts’ team in a few days. Like the old days.

Thanks and re your 8:40, it’s skjelitis, which should come as a surprise to no one.

Nice goal by no Doritos btw

  14. I’d never have thought I’d ever use this LoHud Yankees blog line, but certain guys really don’t show up when the rangers are winning

  15. Clendening making good plays with puck; tape to tape variety, forward surprised they are getting clean passes.
    .
The Henk is a Royal Pain in the Flyers arse. En fuego, not lunging at puck, good side to side movement
    .
VC with some extra jump and 4th line looks good.
    .
    Must win?

Last season Hayes was kind of out of it a lot and people said he must be stoned.

This season he came into camp in better shape and seems “with it” more on the ice. Perhaps he gave up the Mary Jane so subsequently he doesn’t have the munchies so he is “No Doritos” to me

Pouliot was so underrated. Mrs wicky could call the pouliot forechecks from the other room because of how hard he hit and how loud they were.

  18. Tax Free – no way. Should’ve found a way to stay here. Good riddance. Now his declining play and huge contract are Tampa’s problem.

Tax free lost me completely and moops was meh to me. Great guy but not anything special as a player (imo). I’d have rather kept the aforementioned Boyle instead of letting him go and keeping moops (I’m relatively sure that was an AV decision).

It’s 4 mil, but agree. I also liked Prust but did not think his 2.5 mil per was worth it either….I know I know I’m that weird fan that actually calls it how it is whether I like the player or not.

  21. For what it’s worth, I will always consider Callahan as part of that First Wave of core players which have defined the Rangers of the past decade:

    Dubinsky
    Callahan
    Steal
    Girardi

  23. If AV really did take one for the team last night, saying he didn’t prepare them well enough, is that something Torts would ever do? Different approaches, both effective if the players see them as authentic.

  24. Pirri has to correct his misaligned aim or else…he has no business on this team. Grabby from other hand is absolutely steal this season, even when he slows in scoring.

  26. Hank needs to play a full 60. He’ll get there. Plenty of time to sharpen. But it was a good 50 minutes, for sure. Real nice first.

  27. I have to say – it was well executed game by Rangers. Strange, how the same team could play such a different games within couple days.

  28. Makes you wonder if he just needs more playing time to get sharper. The back to backs must be a lot easier when you have only played about 60% of team’s games.

  29. I don’t know about anyone else but I definitely questioned AV for playing Hank tonight. Points for him and the correct call. That’s why I’m not the coach of this team.

    Also:

Hayes has a whole boatload of nicknames.
    Shampoo Boy=Lundqvist.
    Auntie=Raanta
    OPG=Over-paid Girardi
    The Hated One=Miller.
probably missing one or two or three more.

  40. Grabner has been one hell of a steal. And amidst all of the injuries and goalie whoas I am quite happy to see both Kreider and Hayes on pace for their first 50-60 point seasons. Especially Hayes. He cooled off for a bit but he’s really shown that he can be a player in this league and he’s been really important to this team with Zibanejad out. Two big question marks from the long offseason answered!

  41. Good game last night. After surviving the first period, the Rangers counter-punched well.

Skjei looked pretty good paired with McDonagh.
When Staal gets back then why not sit Girardi for a game or two? Though I thought Girardi played pretty well last night.
Fast is a guy you want on the ice to hold a lead, but boy does he struggle in the offensive part of the game. It’s not his skills, either. It’s his decision making.
Vesey with Fast and Lindberg is a waste. Maybe when Nash comes back they can at least put him on a line with somebody that has a smidgen of offensive talent.
Kreider and Grabner on pace for 32 goals for the season. I think Kreider makes or surpasses that mark. Not sure about Grabner, but if he doesn’t score another goal this season he was steal.
Hanka, Hanka kept the team in the game in that first period. They could have been down by 3 or 4 if he was having one of his off nights.

So who plays in goal Saturday against the unbeatable Blue Jackets?
