Rangers-Flyers HAV Review

Rangers 5, Flyers 2.

I’m pretty swamped at work today, so this will have to be brief. HAV.

1. Lundqvist was phenomenal.  This was a vintage performance, with perhaps only the second Flyers’ goal as something he would like to have back.  He was the difference all game long, starting first with the save on Simmonds’ breakaway (which should have resulted in a penalty shot rather than a penalty), and continuing on some of the saves he made on the penalty kill.  I’m sure the Rangers and Lundqvist wish that all of their games were played in Philadelphia, as far and away his two best games of the season were both played there.

2. AV reunited Miller-Hayes-Grabner and it paid enormous dividends. I honestly don’t know why this unit was ever separated. They have chemistry together.  Good to see both Hayes and Grabner score important goals.

3. McDonagh at times was trying to do too much, but I thought he and Skjei were actually pretty good together.  Reading the comments last night, I know I’m in the minority on this.  But Skjei had a really good game, in particular. On the first goal, he’s being pressured by two Flyers and maintained calm, kept possession, and found the right pass to Grabner, who touched it to the middle for Hayes to break away and score.  If that’s Staal, Girardi, Klein, or even Holden, that puck would have been turned over a long time before that. I thought the other pairs were fine, but I remain unconvinced that Clendening is an NHL caliber player. From what I’ve seen, he’s a poor man’s Diaz.

4. Faceoffs were a big issue, especially later in the game.  We couldn’t win one to save our lives and Voracek scored off of one of those draws.

5. Mason is not a good goaltender. Not much more needs to be said there.

6. Good on NBCSN for showing the scrums as they happened, even holding off from going to commercial until one was finished.  Wicky must have loved it. At one point, Giroux was facewashing Hayes after the whistle. There was No Response from No Doritos.  Wicky must have hated it.

7. Fast makes a great play on the penalty kill to spring himself for a breakaway that became a 2 on 1 that became a completely wasted opportunity.

7. We were being soundly outplayed through the second half of the first period to the middle of the second.  Hayes’ goal was scored against the run of play. It wasn’t until the final 7 minutes or so of the second period that we got back into the game. We came out pretty strongly in the third and Kreider was rewarded for it. What plays by all three forwards on that goal. Zuccarello’s flip fell perfectly at Stepan’s feet. Stepan did a wonderful job to control it and then made a beautiful saucer pass to Kreider. And Kreider made an excellent play after he overskated the puck to still get the shot off through his legs.

8. On the third goal, it was a Del Zaster. He and Gudas just caught chasing everyone with the puck, leaving Grabner alone without it and next to the goal for the easy tap in.

9.  At that point, most players on both teams kind of stopped playing since the outcome appeared academic, leading to some sloppy play and a few more goals. Voracek’s first was just an unlucky bounce for McDonagh on what was actually a decent kill.  The Rangers were keeping the puck totally around the outside before Voracek put it in off of McDonagh’s skate.

10. So with Philadelphia now back in the game, they pressed, Gostisbehere went in deep with Schenn on a 3 on 2 and got caught below the goal line as Miller chipped the puck past former greatest player in the world Claude Giroux, who was totally flatfooted at the point, to spring Hayes and Grabner for a 2 on 1. Hayes kept it and blew it past Mason, who was cheating towards Grabner.

11.  I know some people hate the goal reviews for offside, but I’m OK with it.  If the guy was offside, he was offside. It’s black and white. Many other goal review calls involve a judgment call. Did that constitute goaltender interference, was that kicked, was it batted with a glove, etc. Give me a black and white rule any day over that type of judgment call.

12. As I mentioned above, the Rangers lose a faceoff and it comes across quickly to Voracek who one times it above the glove. I guess this is also a bit of classic Lundqvist, where his glove sometimes is a little suspect.

13. But any drama in the finish was quickly snuffed out when Provorov couldn’t handle the offensive draw win, leading to an easy ENG for Grabner.

14. I was surprised it was John Forslund instead of Doc Emrick with the play by play.  I think I saw somewhere that Dock was sick.  Early on Forslund mentioned Holden was a former Avalanche, and he also was quick to mention that Kreider had the hat trick in Colorado. I was betting he was the Avalanche announcer, but no, he’s actually the longtime voice of the Hurricanes. He wasn’t terrible. Even Pierre was milder than usual. Sometimes, though, Pierre asks Eddie a question about training or how to play and you can just hear the disgust with Pierre in Eddie’s response, which is usually preceded by a brief pause in which you can hear him thinking “Really, Pierre? What a stupid question.”

15.  I didn’t mention Simmonds much, but boy do I love him as a player.

16. The fourth line was pretty good, but Pirri has been a zero for a while now.

My Three Rangers’ Stars:

  1. Henrik Lundqvist
  2. Kevin Hayes
  3. Michael Grabner

  2. Repost…just because.
Good game last night. After surviving the first period, the Rangers counter-punched well.

Skjei looked pretty good paired with McDonagh.
When Staal gets back then why not sit Girardi for a game or two? Though I thought Girardi played pretty well last night.
Fast is a guy you want on the ice to hold a lead, but boy does he struggle in the offensive part of the game. It’s not his skills, either. It’s his decision making.
Vesey with Fast and Lindberg is a waste. Maybe when Nash comes back they can at least put him on a line with somebody that has a smidgen of offensive talent.
Kreider and Grabner on pace for 32 goals for the season. I think Kreider makes or surpasses that mark. Not sure about Grabner, but if he doesn’t score another goal this season he was steal.
Hanka, Hanka kept the team in the game in that first period. They could have been down by 3 or 4 if he was having one of his off nights.

So who plays in goal Saturday against the unbeatable Blue Jackets?

  3. I like John Forslund. He’s very knowledgeable and a lot less shrill than Emrick. I was amused when a player is about to take a slap shot and he says, “HERE IT COMES!” I hadn’t heard that one from him before. It’s too bad he’s stuck here in North Carolina with an awful partner in Tripp Tracy on Hurricane games.

Donn Clendennon aka MVP i.e. Gerund (only coos would think of that…) comported himself well. Still has my fav quote of the season, when asked by TouserTrout back in Nov between periods if he was worried about coming in cold to play on a Defensive unit playing well responded; “You mean our D, right?”

  9. Good bounceback game, good HAV review! 🙂 Had to love the hit the Gman put on Simmonds. I thought he really upped his game last night. And while we really we really sucked at faceoffs last night, Carp was right about those big draws that Oscar Meyer won last night. As for Mason, yeah he pretty much sucked. But to day he’s a bad goaltender. The guy stood on his head during their 10 game win streak, against some pretty good teams, and all in games where Filthy never won by more than 2 goals.

  11. *Ahem* I would like my role acknowledged on Gerund. What with royalties and all.
And to the notion the offside review is somehow black-and-white, would that it were the case. It’s almost always about “was his skate on the ice there, or was it was it an inch above, etc.” And it would be one thing if it affected the play in the least–last night was a two-on-one that was firmly set whether the skate was an inch one way or the other. No different than trying to determine whether a stick is at crossbar height or above. Sometimes you get a TV angle where it’s definitive, others not so much, so sometimes the call stands or is overturned, fairly, and others the call stands from lack of evidence, even though in the black-and-white world of millimeters it was offside or it wasn’t. And if it’s mistakenly called offside, why can’t a coach ask for a review and a re-set (of the two-on-one, say) and try it again, to make it perfectly fair. With players moving at that speed, it makes no difference, so go with the linesman’s call and move on to the next play. Stupid rule.

  12. When I was forced to watch away broadcasts on center ice Forslund one of my favorite away announcers. Fair and balanced on home broadcasts. And I will also say that even though Tripp Tracy voice wasn’t made for TV, he is knowledgeable and doesn’t come off as a homer in his commentary. Does his homework about the opposition and stays very balanced. Unlike many cities home broadcasters.

  13. Girardi hit on Simmonds (helmet popper)

Miller on Gudas when Gudas tried to initiate.

    Both were solid

Miller is not huge but I still remember his hit on Erik Karlsonn a couple seasons ago (maybe last year) Karlson tried to stand him up and blue line and miller demolished him. YouTube has it searchable.

  14. I have never advocated adding one dimensional players nor am I advocating that now. We just need someone that consistently win draws, which I have stated all along. That would entail, imho, upgrading a current roster spot. Now whether that is a bottom six guy that can win draws, plays, physical, can score some goals, has decent wheels or a top six player remains to be seen, but it is a problem with this team that will only get worse towards and into the post season.

Sometimes I swear some of you chuckleheads can’t see the forest because of the trees.

  17. More than the Kog available
“Now, if you’re asking about Matt Duchene or Gabriel Landeskog, from what I understand, teams have been told they’re not giving these guys because they’re panicking,” said Friedman. “If you want to come at [the Avalanche] with good, young defencemen or prospects, [they] are prepared to listen. But the packages are going to have to be big because they look at both [players] and see good players signed to good contracts.”

Duchene is in the third year of a five-year deal that takes up just $6 million of Colorado’s cap. Landeskog is also in the third year of a deal that comes in under Duchene’s at $5.71 million per season. Both are affordable contracts given their age and ability.”
    .
Would look for others, Erik Johnson being int the top of that list for McD’s partner at RD1 but has 6×6 left on deal

  18. Interesting tidbit from Elliotte Friedman’s most recent “30 Thoughts” in terms of our buddy Claude Giroux and Bobby Clarke screwing up his name when he drafted him. It was said that Clarke wanted to draft Bobby Sanguinetti, but the Rangers drafted him right before Philthy.

According to Friedman, this is the story: “Finally on Philadelphia, Doug MacLean told a great story about why Bob Clarke tripped up on Giroux’s name when the Flyers took him 22nd overall in 2006. According to MacLean, Philly was going to take Trevor Lewis. But the Kings took Lewis 17th, which annoyed Philadelphia, since Hextall had just left for California. Clarke was flustered.”

I am not so sure on this since Philthy drafted #22 (NYR #21) so Clarke had more than enough time to recover. Either way, Clarke owes the Kings and Rangers a vote of thanks.

  19. Is Johnson a right handed Dman? The Avs want D back for Landeskog. By process of elimination, that means Skjei would be involved. So what else. Buchnevich? Lindberg and Fast? I don’t see a fit on this one.

    Like

  20. Anthony, the story of Giroux is well known. The reason Clarke was flustered is that he wanted Lewis and Sanguinetti was his backup. So when they went back to back, that left him scrambling and he forgot Giroux’s name.

Depends on what attributes you feel are important

Re landeskog…anyone not named miller, Kreider, zpack, or mcdonut would be available to make the deal happen (I’d have to think pretty “hard” if it was Hayes also).

I’d send zucc and skjel in a heartbeat…$$$ would work.

  23. Need for Landeskog? I don’t see it either. When everyone is back, they will need help on defense. R side to play with McD. The other option, if they can’t do that, is to compensate by upgrading their top 6 forwards. But that would have to be a significant upgrade, probably a prolific goal scorer. Not sure it’s feasible.

No way re skjel long term with mcdonut. It amuses me greatly the amount of mcdonut looks terrible posts there were last night. No coincidence that his partner was skjel.

  29. I am not sure if there is a true top 4 righty d-man that is available and withiong ranger of the Rangers in terms of contract and what it will take to get him. Gorton might have to wait until the off-season because of cap concerns (including buyouts), disrupting the top nine forwards – plus this year looks like one where the team is going to need its depth at forward with all of the injuries.

I wonder if it would be wiser to upgrade the bottom two-plus d-men with the intent of getting rest for the older guys (esp. Girardi). It is pretty clear that Double-Bubble doesn’t trust Gerund unless he has to. If he has a better alternative perhaps AV would be more comfortable giving d-men rest.

Contrary to what most people thin, a righty would be nice but is not completely necessary. A lot of left d-men have experience playing the right side because there seem to be more lefty d-men. It is usually more difficult for a righty to play their off side because they just don’t do it that often – except for the PP perhaps.

  31. You don’t trade Kreider unless you desperately need something big. When and if that happens, he’s the guy you trade because he brings back the most–all that potential to be great and not just very good. You could argue now is the time, the Sell-High moment, but it’s a huge gamble, the Catch-22 for GMs, selling high, buying low. You know it’s what you need to do, but you have to deal with the fans (who nearly always want you to trade dreck for gold) going nuts.

I have seen enough of lindberg in the defensive zone circle for a while. He was brutal outside of a couple wins. Surely he can’t be our best.
He lost a key face-off last game too in defensive zone leading to goal I believe.

JT and Mika when he returns should get d zone faceoffs. That should be good to have those two available without adding a Jarrett stoll type

  45. It’s not perfect, Norm, but it’s damn close. I don’t know if you’ve seen that view or not but it’s a lot different than anything else you see on the ice. Plus, if it’s not black and white then the officials will claim that there’s not enough evidence to change that call. No harm no foul then, as long as they stick with what they can actually see and don’t make inferences or guesses.

    Like

  46. So it’s not black-and-white, and I agree–it’s close. And the goal stands if you can’t really tell, back to the linesman’s original judgment call. And if the play is whistled for offside incorrectly (and the replay guys know it) how is it that the play is not reset, players returned to their original positions, and restarted. It was as close to black-and-white as you could get, right?

  48. Speaking virtue and linesmen, perhaps the one and only truly honest athlete who ever lived was Dale Murphy, Mormon and center fielder for the Atlanta Braves who, after trapping a ball in an important game, overruled the umpire who called it a catch and followed the ump back to the infield saying: “Trapped that one, boss. No catch there.”

    Like

  49. ev, of course they could reset the play. They just don’t do it yet, just as they didn’t use to have 3×3, bizarre shootout contests… How long ago was it an absurd notion that the league would allow coaches to ask to undo a goal that occurred after a potentially blown offside call an unlimited period of time before the goal was scored? It’s so absurd it’s hard even to describe. And then to say, well, it’s black-and-white, when it’s clearly not, makes it even more absurd. All this replay stuff is a lawyer’s wet dream–I get that. Refereeing must be perfectly fair? And now we’re stuck with all this nonsense about whether a call is “confirmed” or whether it “stands”, and the players stand around waiting, waiting… And at the end of the game, it’s the refs’ fault anyway.

  50. I guess some of you are correct that he has speed and speed is essential in today’s NHL.

But his skills are nothing to write home about.

I agree with wicky, though. But I must edit his statement. Not under a different coach, but with a different team, Kreider could be a 40 goal scorer. It ain’t happenin’ with the Rangers, no matter the coach.

    Like

  51. I don’t agree one bit, Norm. It is black and white. You’re offsides or you’re not. Unlike most other calls, there’s no judgement allowed, even when it goes to the video review. If it can’t be determined from the video, the ref’s original call is deferred to. Should we go back to when there was no video review for calls where the ref’s judgement is referred to whether a puck crossed the line or not when it’s possible to make a definitive call on the play?
And there’s no possible way to restart a play that was called offsides but turns out it wasn’t. You can’t reset the players and the puck to the positions and speed they were at at the moment of the call. That’s just lunacy.
As opposed to the video review with regard to goaltender interference an offsides ruling is black and white. When it’s not black and white then the review is nil.

    Like

  52. Regarding offsides, again I hate the belated rule. The rule should change to if the back skate is onside via the plane above the blue line it should count (whether or not his back skate is on the ice or not)

    Like

  53. ev, you’re contradicting yourself. It’s black-and-white, it’s not perfect, it’s black-and-white, it’s damn close. And if it’s not black-and-white (though it is black-and-white) it refers back to the linesman’s judgment, though the black-and-white replay removes judgment.
I understand the desire to introduce some form of perfection into the game. But it’s unattainable. And it’s a game, not a court proceeding.

  54. Speed and size aren’t skills. They are attributes.

Putting salaries and contract status, but not age, aside… I would keep Mika, Hayes ahead of Kreider. I dont know much about Vesey or Buch to include them in the conversation. And I would strongly consider Nash and Stepan, even though Nash is old and Stepan isnt blessed with speed.

  55. The rule is black and white and so is the interpretation and carrying out of the rule. Many of the calls in hockey are judgmental, especially goalie interference. As technology advances, the game should take advantage of technology in important instances when it can. Linesman have been far from perfect all throughout hockey history. I think this is most obvious when you look at how many goals have been disallowed this season due to offsides. Onsides and offsides absolutely affect whether a goal was legally scored.
Like I said before, should they go back to allowing the refs to determine whether a puck crossed the goal line or not when it can be determined almost definitively with video review?

We all know we could do with a puck-moving D-man but we can’t take on any big salary on D without sending some the other way, no-one is going to take Staal or Girardi so it’d be a minor 3rd pair move with Klein involved.

And I think it’s ironic that after being up in arms over the trade of Duclair, some people would be alright with trading Vesey or Buchnevich who should only get better and haven’t been bad. Not enough sample size for Buch but Vesey should be just as productive as Landeskog has been thus far. Duchene is 25 and isn’t going to come cheap. If a player is playing mediocre – trade him and include somebody else to get somebody better
If a player is playing well – trade him while his trade value is at its peak

So, no matter how somebody is playing – trade him.

  64. Wick, I’d take Duchene in a millisecond. I just don’t think they should part with the two rookie forwards just yet. I keep mentioning Stepan because the Avs aren’t taking the identical salary back for a lesser player. They’re going to want young cheap players with a high ceiling. Millers, Kreiders, Hayes’. plus don’t forget Zibanejad is going to need a new deal.

  65. As for Landeskog, he’s a very good player but I don’t consider him elite. 258 points in 384 games. Zucc has 233 in 344 to keep it in perspective.

  67. I agree with Wicky about Kreider. A different coach, and or team, and Kreider would be a very different player. They would ride him like the horse he is. None of this 15 minutes a night crap. They would play him 18 to 20 a night.
I disagree somewhat on Landeskog. Like the player, don’t see the need.

  68. Jvr and E Kane are interesting potentially available options as well. Jvr fits the current system player mild the best, decent size, not overly physical. No mean streak.

Again, you guys instantly think because someone suggests a trade of a ranger player that player sucks…not true. I don’t think zucc or any of the ranger forwards (other than pirri) suck. I’ve stated many times zucc has as much value to this team off the score sheet as he does on it. He’s a very good player. That being said, no one is untradeable (I listed the 4 player I would not trade last night). I look at 2 things with a player…cap hit and is the player more than one dimensional (ie good offencive and defencive skills, mobility, physical, if a centre faceoff ability, good teammate) or how many boxes get checked off that list.

  69. Wicky,
On Vesey, I would be reluctant to trade him for two reasons. One, I think he is going to become a very good power forward. He is not afraid to go to the net and pay the price to score. And two, trading him will get remembered by the next big college FA. I know that seems a small reason, but you gave to take into account the Rangers penchant for trading first rounders, and the college FA route has deliver them two good players to make up for it.

Already better than everyone in the bottom 6 (so he’s better than half our forwards there, better all around player than zucc (there is 7),at this stage of his career better than grabner (that’s 8 and 2 of our current top 6). Different positions but a little better than step and z pack (consider step’s salary vs his as well…hard cap, you have to) at this point. As much as I like miller, a bit better than miller as well. Better than Hayes. Not enough of a sample set but better player than buch and vesey. Only player that might be equal to landeskog as an overall player at this point (again, I’m talking overall player, not just one aspect) is Nash, and nash’ cap hit is much higher so landeskog is certainly better VALUE.

Don’t disagree with you re vesey at all. I wonder if including gropp in the deal would do it. Not that I ne necessarily want to just jettison any young player, but you have to give to get. For an opportunity to add elite level top 1st round picks, I think it’s a no brainer.

I still think they try to move step before his clause kicks in. You can not give him away and I think it would be more of a hockey trade.
