Go Time: NYR V CBJ

The Caps stole a little bit of the drama going into this game after defeating CBJ 5-0 the other night. But there will always be a tad of a sidebar anytime a Torts’ coached team battles our sexy sexy boys. Tonight we are witness to the league’s best team getting it on with the team we wished were the best team.

I’m hoping that the Jackets are in the midst of a 16 game losing streak with tonight being number two in that list. The Rangers have played well in Columbus historically and tonight I expect no less. Great weekend for NY sports’ fans with the Rangers beginning in about 15 minutes and the GMEN in about 21 hours.

I (e3) will be reviewing the game and I’ll post it around 3am yo time. Again, major props to Doodie for keeping this ship afloat, the best HAV on the internets. As JR would say “For all intensive purposes”, this is a must win.

  1. Screw these guys. I’m done. It’s obvious which coach has his team afraid to take one shift off, and which coach the team KNOWS they can get away with a crap effort.

  3. Nothing, but a huge disappointment so far. It’s beyond my comprehension, how our team is NOT prepared for the game. Not physically and even more (or less) mentally.

Of course it is, because all you need in the NHL is speed. Nothing else, you must have a one dimensional team that plays every game like is the all star game…well according to the “experts” on this blog.

  5. Okay let me address Alex’s question…. I don’t come around here only when they’re losing. I’ve been a bonehead for YEARS now. I may not post as often as others, but I’m an avid reader of the blog. Carp, my wife thinks I’m funny :). That has to count for something, eh? And I KNOW I bitch about this team, but… that’s my passion. They’re SO frustrating. See, even Ooh la la saison gets it!

  6. Thank you, James G. I’m so tired of the excuses myself. They’re playing the top team in the league. If they’re supposed to be so good, then play up to their level!!! That’s my frustration and I have every right to be whether people agree with me or not.

  7. Here’s the thing…you CAN have a team that’s more than one dimensional contrary to what some posters here will say. Columbus has speed and physicality and skill! That must just blow the minds of some posters here.

  8. I don’t have any great expectation of this team, they had there run, it’s going to take Gorton time to get to stanely cup contention again. Fact is, columbus is a very good team, thanks to JD and his people.

It’s not the new NHL, fighting is actually up a bit from the last season or two, it’s the coach and the small mindset of the team.

  10. Say what you want about Tortorella, but his Rangers (and Columbus) teams always gave a consistent effort.

I’ve never seen a team play “unprepared” so consistently as these Rangers past 2 seasons…

…unless, maybe the Rangers just aren’t that good?

  11. Fact is, in Bettman’s NHL all you need to do is lose for a while, stockpile draft picks, hope some turn out good/great, have a good coaching staff, and stay healthy, especially come playoff time.

  12. JD should get credit for not screwing up the Bettman winning formula.

Garth Snow has screwed it up.
Edmonton may be putting it together.

  13. Screw Columbus
They’re a bunch of nobodies having a moment in the sun. They’ll revert to their mean and Torts will get himself fired again just like every other team’s cycle in every sport

They are not as good as their start was, they should be 4th in the metro when things play out. I do think they are a playoff team, but unless they make trades, probably a first round exit.

AV is overrated as coach regardless of this game outcome. As the torts system faded out and av’s took over completely and more av players were added, the rangers record has gotten worse every season.

  15. Putzburgh will be good-excellent for a while. They’ve got a generational superstar in place, in addition to more stars and good young role players.

You are correct re reputation. I’ll take it a step further, kesler won’t play on a team he coaches and look how Eric staal is playing now, when used properly.

  17. Now I’ll play devils advocate:

How good could the Rangers really be with these guys out of the lineup?

    Rick Nash
    Zika Amedinejad
    Marc Staal
    Pavel Buchnevich
    Matt Peumpel (just kidding)

It’s like the kings of hindsight here

Everybody says they knew what was going to happen since day one but the reality is that nobody knows anything about anything. It’s impossible to know but easy to predict after the fact

Also some guys have gotten older and performance has suffered especially on defense and in goal. Lots of variables as to why the cup contending window has closed.

With few exceptions on both ends of spectrum, the league is designed to have cycles

  20. I agree with both Akbar and tommy…I can’t wait until our roster is completely healthy (hopefully pirri and hrivik are no where near it. Or fast, but I know that’s a pipe dream), then we can trade and add a couple of playoff type players to improve our cup chances.

Showing Columbus a lot of respect.

I don’t want to speak for anyone else, but my opinion about this team has not wavered from game one. Win or lose I have said the same thing about this team and what I think it needs to be a serious contender.

With that said, your post was obviously not directed at me.

  23. Up and down we go a good game a bad game it’s what this team is. The confidence level is low when you don’t know which Lundqvist will show up! At this point average goalie at best! This group is a reflection of its coach we can believe all we want but the window on this netminder is closed!

Like I said age to key players and losing guys like Hagelin and Stralman due to cap in one case and stupidity in the other shows how much we’ve changed for the worse from AV’s first year here.

  25. Ricardo – agreed. Hank surly has lost something off his fastball. Like many starting pitchers back in the day, might be time to think about the king as more of a relief pitcher than anything else. He’s not been good more times than not over the last season and a half (last year’s start notwithstanding)

  26. Carp thanks for mentioning that. I Don’t know if you saw it the other but I mentioned how you always say that and how it means they’re going nowhere this year unless he has a crazy turn around. Woof

  27. The coach needs to realize that the “franchise” goaltender (who eats up too much cap space) is not what he used to be and change his “system” style to a more defencive one.

  30. I point out deficiencies I think this team has (the same from the start of the season btw). Win or lose, I have not changed my opinion and do not “think they are great” when they win and “now they suck” when they lose. I am every bit an ardent ranger fan as any other. I never root for them to lose. I’m objective about the players and team unlike most fans, sorry if that confuses you.

Even if we lost it would of been awesome. It reminded me of early 70’s GAG line & “The Polish Prince”, Stemmer vs the Bruins or Habs.
    That was frikkin FUN !!!

  35. Grabner is amazing! That go ahead goal was a thing of beauty! I bet if Sather was still a GM we would have to watch Andrew Ladd for the next 5 years instead of Grabber.

    Thanks Gorton!

  36. Torts dissed them by not playing Bobo and that cost them. Grabner’ s acceleration between the blue lines is the best I have ever seen. Shocking that they could play half a game and win against a very good team. Every team knows they start slow now. They have to correct that. They can’t come back like this against good goaltending. Got to admit I didn’t see it coming.
