Leafs beat the Rangers 4-2

Last Saturday seems so long ago. To recap, the Rangers beat the Blue Jackets, the best team in league at the moment, coming back from a 4-1 deficit to win 5-4. We were hoping that the following afternoon the GMEN would stop Aaron Rodgers and his Packer Teammates setting up round III, the thrilla that ain’t vanilla, against the hated Cowboys. Well, the GMEN fell short but we still had the Rangers who had won 5 of 6 and ready to embark on a strange middle of the season 5 day vacation. Tonight’s game against Toronto would be Austin Matthews’ debut at the worlds most famous arena. However, home ice  recently, has been a house of horrors for the Broadway Blueshirts. Sadly, that house is even more horrid as our boys were rolled 4-2.

1. Hank is a problem. Carp has said it over and over. Others have said more times than I care to count. A few more even wished it was Talbot that stayed and Hank, his 8.5 million dollars per, his icy blue eyes and gorgeous mane, was the one sent packing. All wishful thinking because he’s here, not going anywhere, and no longer the King. Not even a Prince. More like Court Jester.

2. What bothers me more than the one or more softees virtually every game, is his bug-eyed stare down after a teammate has ANYTHING even remotely to do with the puck winding up behind #30. The TSN team during the second period intermission said that Hank stares down more teammates than any other goalie in the league. Now, I watch a lot of hockey, more than my wife readily allows, and I’ve yet to see ANY goalie EVER stare down a mate. It’s not right. It has to stop. And it must end soon.

3. I wonder if there’s a problem in the room. Surely McD had to notice Hank’s evil eye on the leafs third goal. Surely Girardi, Ein Klein, Shay, Staal, Gerund, JT, Haze, Puree, Lindberg, Zucc, Stepan, and every other player on the team has been privey to that stare down. Not cool. The wrath of Hank. Too bad The Wrath was traded. Imagine if #6 was the guilty party. A great headline ‘The Wrath earns Hank’s wrath’. It might be time for the Ranger players to start giving Hank the bug-eye death stare every time one of those center ice bouncy pucks slips by him within the first 20 seconds of name your game.

4. I’ve heard from good sources that Hank gives himself that stare down in between periods whenever he gives up his inevitable softee. But it’s different. Standing before a full length mirror, not a hair out of place, Hank gazes deeply into his steel blue eyes which are bluer than robins’ eggs, and recites his manta “it’s ok, not your fault, you wore lavender Armini to the game, and you’re beautiful.”

5. This team isn’t going far this spring if Henrik continues his poor play. They’re not. Raanta is the better, more dependable, goalie right now. The Court Jester still makes the great save on occasion as he came up big several times against the young Leaf team, but it’s the too often bad goals that are happening at an alarming rate. And unless Hank finds a way to plug his five-hole, or Raanta is promoted to number one, it surely will be one and done regardless of their opponent come April.

6. This game was destined to not end well. A) The Rangers were coming off a 5-day break (so were the Leafs, but that’s beside the point); B) The Garden was honoring the passing of Detective S. McDonald with an emotional and well deserved pre-game ceremony. The Rangers have done historically well on the road whenever another team has a ceremony, but are atrocious at home when MSG does the hosting; C) The return of Rick Nash and Pavel Buch caused AV to roll a foreign and strange set of line combinations. And it’s not a surprise to anyone by mentioning thst game chemistry is no where near the same as practice induced familiarity. The speed just isn’t the same; D) The leafs are a young team starting 8 rookies and even though they’re likely much further along than they’d even hoped they’re still a young team ready to be had; E) The Leafs had lost 4 in-a-row to the Rangers; and F) The Rangers were home and the familiar confines of the Garden have not been terribly kind of late.

7. We often joke about former teammate’s scoring goals against our boys. How about a former teammates’ son scoring goals against the Rangers?  William Nylander, son of Jägr line mate Michael, scored the first Leafs’ goal after Hank made several big saves. Ironic in that the quiet garden crowd chanted Henriq, Henriq, Henriq and after the 4th chant, the former King allowed a bad bad goal.

8. The TSN announcers mentioned that as a 9 year old, William played  ball hockey with Hank. It had to be an amazing feeling to score a goal against a player that you likely idolized, and played against, as a child.

9. Looked like Shay was the one who allowed, or helped, Hank to give up so a weak goal. Wandering aimlessly, caught covering no one, Shay once again let everyone know that even though he skates like the wind, he handicaps his partner. I’m sure Hank gave Shay the death stare but since Shay was right in front of him, the TV cameras were none the wiser and we never noticed the insult.

10. The Rangers were not bad 5 on 5 tonight. They had chances and tested Andersen early and often but were unable to capitalize on their chances. Andersen was the better goalie and that’s usually enough for a team to come away with the two points.

11. The Ranger PP in the other hand was still on vacation. They really didn’t too much at all with the man advantage. Pirri once again showed that the pre-season was his Cup  Final and the regular season a mere waste of time. That experiment will end once the Zman is back. Z will also help in faceoffs. The Rangers have been really bad last month or so. At one point tonight, Stepan was 1 for 12. The Leafs were around 60%. That’s not anywhere near good enough. What happened to all that offseason video work? Seems a distant memory.

12. The Rangers began the game with: Miller-Haze-Grabner; THE-Step-Zucc; Gnash-Lindberg-VC; and Buch-Pirri-Fast. Not exactly how the the lines we saw at the beginning of the season. It will be interesting to see what AV does going forward. You know it isn’t going to remain the way it’s listed above. In fact, AV put Gnash with Grabner and Haze in the third.

13. Once Z is back, I would like to see: Miller/Haze/Grabner; THE/Z/Buch; Gnash/Step/Zucc; and VC/Lindberg/Fast. If Hank can end the soft goal BS and if the forwards help backcheck, and if the special teams resume where they were 6 days ago, all hope is not lost. But then again, if ODB doesn’t drop those two early passes, and DRC doesn’t hurt his thigh, maybe I’m pumped for Cowboys/Giants this Sunday.

14. While the game was over at 2-0, THE scored a beautiful goal on a third effort which made the score 2-1. He’s back in early season beast mode and it’s a pleasure to see this incredible physical specimen playing up to the hype we’ve laid at his feet.

15. It’s not all bad. Our injured boys are healing and there’s too much talent to not make the playoffs. The key of course is Hank. He must be better and more consistent game to game. The Metro however is the toughest division in the NHL and finishing 5th, could be a blessing. Of course if CBJ wins the division and the Rangers finish 4th – which is where the Rangers likely finish – I’ll not be displeased. That said, the Penguins and Capitals are are going to have a big say in who winds up in first.

16. I expect Raanta to play next in Montreal. Hank, aside from the ECF in 2014, doesn’t play his best against the Habs as a visitor.

17. A real shame the Rangers were unable to honor Detective McDonalds memory with a better performance. The Captain Mark Messier and his sidekick Adam Graves were in the house and I’m sure they expected a better effort to honor their fallen hero.

18. I don’t have much more. A fairly pedestrian game void of any passion which was to be expected given the lengthy break. And it’s on to Montreal and let’s win there.

19. As much as I don’t want to see CBJ win, they beat TB tonight and that makes me happy. I really dislike that team and especially their coach.

My three Stars: THE,  JT Miller, Zucc

  1. Second! Well the evisceration of #30 seems a tad over the top… I agree first goal was all on him but he seemed to have a boatload of help from his teammates in giving up 2, 3, and 4. As far as the death stares, I haven’t seen any goalie, including Hank, come close to doing what Price did when he was pulled a week or so ago. Goalies make faces, look to the sky, smash their sticks, yell and scream, etc when they are scored on. That is not a “Hank only” characteristic. But I will agree he should cut it out. More importantly he should cut out the early giveaway goal…

  2. Sitto – Price definitely gave somebody the evil eye in that game. Was it the coach? The bench? everyone? Hard to say. The TSN guys said, and I agree, that Hank does it more often than any other goalie and that it’s not acceptable. I’ve seen Hank doing nearly every goal. That was my point.

  3. I put most of the blame on the coach quite honestly. If you look around the league at teams that are currently winning, they are doing it with skill, speed, physicality, pride, and standing up for one another. This coach has neutered this team beyond recognition. His “whistle to whistle” philosophy is ridiculous in a sport where passion and aggression mean as much as speed and skill. A league where no other team only plays “whistle to whistle”, this coach has given us the softest team I can remember since the early 90s.

I’m not talking about fighting majors (although they could probably use a couple of those here and there), I’m talking about tangible, physical push back. Other team scores a couple of goals, got out and forecheck like demons, rattle the boards. Your goalie gets run/bumped/hit/interfered with…better be a pile up. Someone pushes a teammate after the whistle…scrum better ensue. Pride…have a little.

Not with this coach though, whistle to whistle and go away meekly into the night.

  4. I am the harshest Henrik critic and even I dont think he is a problemo. I just like joking about how perfect in appearance he is. I never give Henrik a break, but this defense is terrible, both at crease clearing and moving the puck. Turnovers here, snow angels there.

  5. Always nice to have an E3 review after a Ranger crapfest.

Hank is definitely a problem, he needs to be the best goalie in game 75% of the time, not 25%

AV whistle to whistle, not sure about, but what’s with the poke checks only strategy. Something wrong with taking the man?

  7. Just saying up front, I hope commenters here continue to take the higher road with HL and don’t go the way some other blogs treat Girardi – its distasteful. Criticize play but lets try to remember all these guys have done for the team and that until proven otherwise, they are giving it their all when out there. And that is coming from a guy who has consistently been critical of the “HL can do no wrong” attitude of some fans the past few years.

Not to be flip, but does HL wear contacts? Should he? They don’t call it eye/hand coordination for nothing after all. And agreed with main post, HL needs to chill with the stare downs – I’ve not seen him high fiving the guys that bail him out in the crease. Two way street. Skjei is a rookie liability. He is going to make mistakes and that is the price to be paid for giving him minutes. It would be foolish to base future expectations on the necessary learning experience.

On the lines, think AV put that way just in expectation of limiting ice time for Nash/Buch, give it a few games.

    Like

  8. @noblewines: I’d like to see a little more moxie too but look at that call early in the game, I think it was on Skjei, for interference a few feet above the goal. The two guys bang each other for position, Leave falls down and we get flagged. Maybe it is a risk worth taking but the refs are so unpredictable now I can understand (though perhaps not fully agree) with AV position.

Did any of us expect to win last nights game?

Good job by the crowd to get a chant going after the in game video tribute.
Boys were pass happy last night but not close to sharp enough for the fancy play.
    Maybe tonight?

Time to start building a better d around him

  11. Great review by E3. Caught last 15 mins of 3rd when it was all over but the crying
    .
On the 1st goal replay, Henk made 3 or 4 highlight worthy saves but let in a savable, yet high danger area, shot. The highlight of the Leaf’s 4th goal was classic Done G PK ineffectiveness.
    .
While his royal highness is inconsistent, the real issue IMHO is the D. When facing a real coach is who has 4 days to game plan for NYR, it’s obviously the dump it in and jam the D is a very very effective strategy against the BS (Blue Shirts)
    .
AV plays a weaker D-man with McD. I abhor this strategy as it hamstrings the most valuable D and forces him to play scramble D. Shea has serious speed and believes he can skate his way out of trouble but he (and his partner) just find more of it.
    .
The Miracle Met is a player. The kid makes good plays with puck and looks like he belongs. Not saying he is Kevin Lowe or Kristopher LeTang but he makes plays with puck.
    .
For all the Zucc love on the PP he is LAST among starting forwards on PP pts/60 this season. He was 3rd last year. #1 last season? Plays for Ott…

Donuts is a serious, all-out dude, but too quiet and composed to be Captain, as Richie intimated.

  13. Beezle, I was referring to the plays on the boards & in the corners, where every Rangers leads with the stick looking for the poke checks. I remember one play last night where a Ranger hit the man instead & the puck came loose for another Ranger to pickup & skate free.

  14. Thought the 2nd goal was wonky. @kevindelury has a GIF on twitter showing Kadri skating by Hank and hooking his stick with his skate. Spins Hank and his stick around and puck goes through 5hole. Wonder if it should have been challenged?

  16. The only way the Rangers win the cup while Henrik is here is to be so good the goalie is not counted upon as much, like Pittsburgh last playoffs. The Penguins had the puck so much that their goalie did not matter all that much. They win with Fleury or Murray. Shampoo Boy does win the death stare award though.

Excellent review, not only of the game, but the possible reasons for the Rangers performance. Emotional night, two players returning from injury, and the layoff.
I still do not understand AVs use of Kreider and Miller. Kreider had hop right from the beginning. This is a guy who should be playing 20 minutes a night. Instead he is at 16 or so a game (17+ last night). Same goes for Miller. I just don’t get it. These are two horses. Ride them!

    Nicely done, E3.
Hank needs to get on a roll going into playoffs, not now. I’d say after the ASG AV should start playing the hell out of him. I also believe his issues are reparable. And this is why: Hank has always been just above average on high shots ( high glove, anyone?), but almost unbeatable down low. He seems now a little better on high shots than he was, so the reflexes are still there. His main problem seems to be down low. I don’t believe he became that bad that fast because of his age. His concentration, and perhaps his positioning are still fixable, imho.

  19. My opinion on the rangers is they are a 1 and done team in the playoffs. I think there are multiple problems. One of them is the coach (I agree with you wicky and his reputation has followed him to the rangers), this coach has turned this group into powder puffs (agree again Wicky), not going to do much in the playoffs with powder puff play and I see father time starting to take over Lundqvist. The legs are the first to go and that is what I see from Lundqvist, he isn’t as fast anymore moving side to side, up and down. That is a big problem since Lundqvist was the guy who use to bail out the rangers poor play in there zone, not to mention I think the rangers defenceman are not that good and for this team to go far in the playoffs they would have to score a lot of goals consistently, don’t see that happening. Gorton surely has his work cut out for him to fix this ship that’s slowing sinking.

Loved that Trautwig didn’t even try to hide his emotions. Thanks to a good friend, I’ll have this on a DVD.

  22. Over a year now that the King’s save % has been below league average for a starting goalie. Given that HL is the highest paid Ranger he has to be our best player as AV has said many times. The continuing excuses analyzing why certain goals are not his fault is just excuse making as that is the nature of hockey. The save % adjusts for all that. If King is going to struggle to exceed a .900 save percentage this team has no chance to succeed in a playoff round against good competition. And the fact that his game seems to have deteriorated rapidly and he has 4 more years left at 8.5 million is frightening. He is a far bigger problem than Done Girardi and one that has no clear solution. Does the Emperor have clothes?

Back in the day when if you went in front of the net you were whacked and beaten unmercifully, winning teams still had at least one brave soul always challenging the crease and always racking up numbers. Today, where you basically can’t touch an opponent, no one wants to consistently go there. Sup wit dat?

  24. Don’t think it is fair to blame this management (Gorton) for the sorry state of the defense. Sather destroyed the defense with his Strahlman, Staal & Girardi moves. So many teams looking for a top 4 RHDman it is impossible to get one without overpaying. I give Gorton credit for not making a panic move. In the absence of a miracle solution he needs to find a way to keep Holden and sign Shattenkirk, along with McD & Skjei at least that is a semblance of a way forward.

It wouldn’t hurt to get a coach who understands how the game is played now, not 20 years ago. Even Torts has changed but AV holds on to his tried and (un)true perspective.

  25. I agree that Henrik will be fine. And let him have his issues now. This is a playoff team, barring multiple major injuries. Better him do this now than the playoffs.

Dont be like the Blue Jackets and peak too soon. Deal with injuries now, and do your best to keep everyone healthy going into April. Guarantee you the Blue Jackets are out of the playoffs by the end of Round 2.

Also, I say this again. I am the harshest Henrik critic. I get angry in his postgame interviews when he talks about what the team can do better rather than accepting full responsibility, as the longest tenured leader of the team should. He always includes sh*t like we didnt get shots from good areas or we as a team can forecheck better. Just put the responsibility on your own back, Henrik. You’re the veteran of 12+ years that looks like an ageless supermodel.

Anyway, that rant aside, Ive never seen him give death stares to any teammates.

  30. And to the AV-making-the-Rangers-worse-every-year wanna-meme from the gentleman from the great State of Montana, they are scheduled to earn 109 points this year. 101 last year.
I get it that after any loss the Rangers are the softest team in the league, the D needs to be overhauled, Lundqvist is done, a top-six forward needs to be moved to the 3rd line, and most of all the coach needs firing, but in Posey-land, where I live, I’d give them a little more time, for Nash and Buch to fold back in and for Zibanejad to return. Staal would be nice, too, and of course there will always be injuries, but I’m not ready to bail out on the early-season Rangers, still holding out some hope that team can make a return if they can survive the mid-season slog.

Here is one thing you are 100% WRONG on and frankly I find it a bit problematic with your “counter points”….”I get it that after any loss the rangers are yada yada yada” you spew that line every time. It’s just wrong. I am not a ledge dweller nor am I some fair weather fan that thinks things are great when they win and terrible when they lose. I am one of the few posters that stays consistent (not like Eric) about the warts on this team (imo of course) win or lose. I will continue to do so until the management, coach, or players address those “warts” that are the problem (again, imo).

Last year Zucc was a shell of himself. So yeah, he is better this year, but the bar is not high. As far as AV goes, I get what some are saying about the lack of “jam” on this team. While Torts went to far one way, and paid with his job, AV may very well going to far the other way.

Nothing wrong with that. But when I talk about the overreaction to losses, I’m talking about the blog generally, not you in particular. I should have made two posts rather than two paragraphs. 36. 1- Watching from the 100s I can tell you Hank wasn’t screened on those goals. I forget which but I think it was the 3rd goal was another one of those short side babies that have been an epidemic this year. I think it’s merely a matter of his reflexes and reaction time declining.

2- When Zibanejad gets back I think Pirri is the guy who should sit. He’s a bystander on every shift.

3- Zucc is the best passer/playmaker on the roster. 90% of his passes last night were right on the stick blades of his linemates. A lot of guys either weren’t ready for it or couldn’t handle the pass.
Passing aside, he really doesn’t stand out in my mind this year as someone who has done anything exceptionally well. He’s had a couple of games this year but he’s hardly making up for the lack of goals with a stand out effort anywhere else. Won’t speculate that he doesn’t want to be here without his pals or that he needs a change of scenery but I wouldn’t be shocked if he were included in a deal for a dman.

The 1st things to go on great athletes is focus and concentration it’s why Lundqvist can make the great save and let in the softie. Also some horrendous decisions such as letting Stralman go.

The cap and draft are designed to even things out over the long run. Yes teams like Pittsburgh and Chicago have survived those factors but most don’t and most includes the Rangers.

  48. If, as some of you have said, this is the Hank we’re going to have from here on out, AV can continue to decrease the number of games he plays. If he does that, maybe Hank will be the one waiving his no-trade clause to go elsewhere so he can play more regularly. These guys have egos and I’m sure Hank thinks he is still an elite goaltender. Wasn’t that the same reason Brian Boyle wanted to go elsewhere? He didn’t want to be a 4th liner anymore.

  49. Callahan wanted out too because AV had him pegged as a 3rd liner with no PP time. Thankfully, he turned down the big contract Sather offered him. The Rangers should be scratching Girardi now, and could do the same thing with Henrik. No move clauses can be overcome if the player wants to play and is not playing.

  50. I’m confused, is the NHL trade deadline 28 February or 01 March? Anthony said it was the 28th yesterday but I just read an article that said it was the 1st.
