  1. SN – soludarity. This stubborn fool didn’t want to go the word doc route via cut and paste. Too curious as to WTF happened last night. Lo and behold – the same ******* thing happened again. Fortunately I only got about a forth into the third WTF and decided to do a test publish. But my words were not visible anywheres in the world. Glory be, where you words at?

The truth of the matter is that this D was overachieving for quite some time. Lundqvist has to be held accountable for playing mediocre (not average. mediocre. maybe teams win with average goalies but not mediocre ones) hockey but the bigger problem is the need to rebuild or at least shake up the blue line Quick break down:
Your best Dman has no one to play with that he doesn’t have to babysit defensively.
You’ve got a rookie being dealt all kinds of responsibility he’s not always able to handle.
Staal is your second best Dman and is out with like his 8th concussion and 100th injury in the last few seasons. Meanwhile Ryan Graves doesn’t even get a single game for the coach to see what he’s got.
You’ve got the 7th man Clendening who is a borderline NHL guy regardless of his fit into AV’s system.
And most importantly, You’ve got two ANCHORS in the top four right now in Klein and Girardi, being dished very important minutes by a coach with less balls than he apparently has options on D within the organization. I think it’s telling that Ryan Graves hasn’t come up at all for a look, I think it’s possible that AV could be using Klein while he isnt 100%. That could and should have ramifications.
I don’t want to drag this point out any more but obviously the defense needs some upgrading.

    Repost 2-

Can’t say it’s the ugliest loss that I’ve seen while playing in Montreal (for Hank OR the team) And I have said that Lundqvist is in the worst stretch of his career at this point in time. But damn, I can feel the stress through my computer screen. A lot of disgust which is very understandable but let’s be real the way Carp would if he were at the helm: 1- Lundqvist isn’t going to Hartford, getting traded or left exposed in the waiver draft. You can come up with reasons why it would make sense for the rest of your lives but you’re not convincing the GM or the coach that you’re right.
and 2- There will be no fire sale. This coach has constructed his team with his system in mind and they’ll live or die by it for the rest of the season.

  5. 3rd and final repost:

I remember accountability being one of the main reasons Torts was the guy that replaced Renney. AV has been here for a while. His system his mentality his approach has paid dividends at times, but this team has shown itself not ready to play a few too many times this season and the breakdowns defensively need to be addressed. That doesn’t mean go yell at them like Torts would, but it’s time to stop this “live and die with the veterans” stuff. It didn’t get them anywhere last year and it’s not working this year either. Guys need to sit, guys need to have their roles adjusted. Another year of one and done in the post season because he didn’t have any options other than the ones he chose isn’t going to be good enough. At least it shouldn’t be.

  7. One of the problems is that they are paying their goalie like a superstar and he’s playing like a third stringer. The Bruins made the same mistake with Rask. Now what do they do? Sure, they can play Raanta when he comes back from his injury, but then there’s Lundqvist sitting on the bench taking up cap space that they could be using to shore up the defense.

I have felt for most of the season, that Zucc was the guy to move for D help. You have to get a center if you are trading Stepan.

  16. Agree on Miller. Nota third line center. Top 6 player. I like the outside the box thinking. One thing is for sure, they need at least one good Dman, if not two.

    Like

  17. ILB, I’ve looked at the situation as exactly that. Hayes has shown that he can be the number two guy behind Zibanejad and with the additions of Buchnevich and Vesey I think Zucc is prime trade bait considering he is a help now kind of addition.

  18. As for a third line center you could always try to acquire a guy like Hanzal at the deadline. UFA to be, currently half the cost of Stepan, more physical and a big upgrade in the circle.

  20. Speaking of righty D, reality is the rangers will probably need 3. I mean they only have 2 now (no offence to clendening) and both of those have under performed. Girardi will probably be bought out and Klein exposed or possibly traded (I would think after the season). You add a righty now (by trade deadline), go with the other two rest of season and try to acquire your other 2 via trade and free agency in off season.

  21. With as well as Minnesota is playing, I think you’d be hard pressed to get coyle and dumba from them during the season unless the package just floored them (would stepan be enough to do it?).

I don’t think it can be during the season. No one here seems too interested but I’d be all over gudbranson in Vancouver (who would be an in season upgrade). He will be an unrestricted free agent at seasons end and I’d try to keep him.

Stone in Arizona is also another potential in season upgrade as well as johns from Dallas.

Imo, and some of may choose not to agree–to many of the losses suffered by the Rangers this season have been either due to (1) not being prepared to play, ie., “not showing up”, or (2) goaltending mediocrity.

It had nothing (nada, zippo, not a thing) to do with mcilrath. And I mean nothing (quite honestly I hadn’t even thought about him, not a blip on the radar). It was an indictment of AV and the marshmallow soft, vanilla team he seems to want to put on the ice every game. On paper they are….system they don’t. They’ve shown that the coach can’t make adjustments in game and if you smother their one trick, this team is toast. Only hope is a team tries to run and gun with them for a whole series…pens only team that might try it.

I don’t think this team can win a series (as its constructed) by playing all games grinding playoff hockey. They better hope everyone they play are dumb enough to do a track meet.

I don’t think AV is a bad coach, I think he is agood coach. Here is MY problem with AV. He has not shown the ability in game to make adjustments. And he has no flexibility within his system. He has also stuck to the rolling 4 lines, even when they didn’t have 4 lines. Ice time is also a complaint of mine. Miller, and Kreider to name two, do not get the ice that should.

    Liked by 2 people

  66. If AV wants to be considered a great coach, he needs to take over a struggling or middling team and turn it around. Taking a talented team which had been the POs 3 seasons in a row and continuing going to the POs is not that impressive. AV is 5-3 in PO series wins with Torts’ players. Torts was 3-3 with lesser players (Bickel, Rupp, Caber!) in his final 3 seasons.
It’s not all AV’s fault, the roster construction on the back end is weighted down with onerous contracts.

The team has regressed mainly due to several key players getting older and injuries/blocked shots effect. The wear and tear is largely due to effects from Playing the Torts style on Girardi and Staal.

    Mainly key defensemen and Henrik.

The bill is due and we are all seeing the results.

The league with the cap and draft is designed to make things cyclical. Only Pittsburgh and Chicago seem immune. So for now we’re on the downtick.

Do you really think Henrik and many of the defense are going to get younger, healthier and play like they did in the window where there was 2 conference finals and a cup final besides.

Love to see it but very skeptical.

Regarding the forwards we don’t have the top end talent that major contenders like Chicago, Pittsburgh and Washington have.

  73. Most cup winners (since the lost season) either have a legit superstar forward (or two it seems more recently) or a stud d man or a smothering system with skill. I don’t think the rangers have any of those. They have a very good d man (mcdonut), a legit first line forward (with a few more that could become that), and a loosey goosey system with some skill.

  76. My take on this year’s group and its coach: if AV can convince Miller, Kreider or Hayes–any or all of them–that they can be stars if they decide to make the necessary sacrifice, the team can go as far as it wants. Nash can help with that project, having been there. And Lundqvist needs to rediscover his art.

  77. Let’s not forget the pens have 2 forwards better than any of ours to start with, one d man better than any of ours to start with, have players that are multi dimensional so you don’t have to use a line up spot on a “specialist”. Their players can play any “style” of game and their star players are more than willing to play beyond the whistle and lead by example (Crosby rag dolling mcdonut around the ice after a hit on a teammate immediately comes to mind). Their goaltending as it sits today is every bit as good as ours

Respectfully, it isn’t absurd if a poster has been pointing out the same flaws consistently over the past couple of seasons (faceoffs for instance). I get if with the “we are great/we suck” posters, but some here (myself included) are not in that group despite how hard others try to put us in that group.

I don’t think a single person that posts about the team flaws (as they see it) roots for them to lose. Being realistic about the teams shortcomings (again perceived by that individual), does not make you a bad fan, just realistic (as opposed to the this team is perfect how it is and it’s just waiting for the right moment to run the tables approach).

I, for one, would be ecstatic to be wrong about av, his style, and the roster as it is currently constructed and see the rangers win the cup this year!

I think this team at this very moment is a playoff team, but the way they play and the guys they have (along with the current coach) I don’t think they make it past the second round if they get that far.

I agree with bdl, make some in season changes and you can improve the team and they could go further (along with goalie play improvement).

Don’t like Rangers vs Pens in the first round because 1- They’ve yet to produce goals against Murray and 2- the Pens have the skill to expose their D. Washington didn’t scare me this year and they don’t scare me this year.
They’re deep but they can’t solve the trap. The 11-12 team was able to grind out wins. Much different team. That season still didn’t get them any farther than they’ve been and it probably shortened the careers of Staal and Girardi by about 3 years.

You guys were also head over heels about this team when it was scoring five a game.

I agree there are flaws (just about every team has them, especially on defense … the best teams in the league have bad defensemen playing). I agree they have played like inconsistent garbage for a lot of the last two seasons. They are still one of the best teams in the league, despite their problems. Opponents and opposing coaches think so.

But lose two in a row … it’s a firestorm.

  85. My biggest problem with AV (and the one reason I’d say his job could be at risk) is the same problem I had with him last year. He’s stubborn. He’ll bench the hell out of guys like Miller Kreider and Vesey but won’t sit guys like Klein, Girardi, Clendening. Klein could be playing hurt for all we know, Girardi wouldn’t be a 3-4 on the other top teams in the league but he’s a #2 guy here (yes, I said #2)…Staal is out. Can’t give Graves a look. No sir. But Brady Skeji gets to deal with growing pains game to game. It’s poor management to be like that. And it doesn’t require enough accountability.

Oh man…no way. If there is a way to look back on that group of posts from the cup run one poster was saying they’d beat the pens and go far even when they were down 3-1.

And I knew better about this one trick pony when they were scoring 5 a game (I know those posts are still viewable;))

Don’t forget wicky on the hate list.

  87. I’ll defend Wicky here- not saying we see eye to eye on all points-but because I tend to understand where he’s coming from I’ll voice my two cents. It’s not about the winning. It’s about how beatable they are. (that sounds ridiculous, I know but hear me out)
There’s obviously more than one way to skin a cat here. At the end of the day I think it’s about having a team that’s tough to beat. They’re a top team. But their flaws as compared to some are more critical come post season. The inability to win faceoffs, allowing the opposition to stand untouched in the crease and screen the goalie night after night, shying away from physicality when there’s opponents trying to use it to beat you or wear you down….These are consistent issues. Yes, they win despite them some nights but the nights when they lose as a direct result of some of them make Wicky develop an uncontrollable twitch in his eye lol. Fans are the same as coaches, some believe the game is meant to be played a particular way and some are from a whole different school of philosophy.

  88. It has been my experience that the very, (very) large percentage of organized hockey players are uber- competitive and disproportionately rough and tumble, to state it politely. To ice an entire large team of cheek-turners cannot be coincidence; it has to be the coach’s preferred and enforced attitude. I suppose he has his reasons, but it is sometimes hard to watch.

  89. Dear Abby,

I have recently been sexted by Carlos Danger. Should I ignore the intrusion or does his wife still have influence with the Clintons? Though I am not yet totally on the balls of my ass, I could use a well-compensated position.

  90. I keep looking for evidence, while watching games, of the Rangers getting pushed around physically, shying away from contact, getting beat and worn down, etc. and I don’t see it. True, they’re not taking stupid match penalties (a la Shaw), they’re not running around like Marchands (before he decided to be a scorer), and they’re not starting fights to get their bench-or the other bench-going. But they’re perfectly physical within the rules, as though that’s a bad thing. It’s the execution that’s sometimes piss-poor, vis. the horror-show minute in Montreal, a how-to tape of defensive miscues.

  91. I guess you’re right Carp some of us shouldn’t be so negative! I mean what could possibly go wrong we did win 1 cup in 77 years nothing to be down about! Think positive what’s a soft goal now and then! We have as good a chance as anybody right? After all its only January!

  92. The rationale of some here…well, I just don’t understand. As an example, to have your goalie “run” like in Dallas and to do nothing because “you might get an instigator (miller didn’t vs shaw) or lose out on a power play” is asinine to me.

It’s like a cop saying I’m not going after that criminal because he might hurt me.

    Just incomprehensible mindset to me.

  93. Alex, to take nothing from what I said other than I’m wrong about Clendening’s playing time (the 7th defeseman) isn’t fair. You certainly aren’t dumb, you know what I’m talking about.

  94. I did go back to read post Game-4 comments, Wick, and it’s true there was one optimistic poster, Miami! “iwicky” was talking up trades like everyone else. I was getting into it with Dudley, hoping Carrillo and Dorsett would benched for Game 5. Got half my wish, and Dorsett at least played less than 10.

  95. Actually James I disagreed with a few other points

Kreider doesn’t sit for punishment. Vesey is playing way more games than he’s ever played so a couple off or some at 10 or 12 minutes is a good thing.

I agree about Klein likely playing hurt. I don’t think Girardi is number 2 defense even with him playing with McDonagh. Staal and Holden are certainly better than him.

  96. Ha, ok. I remember Miami talking about it being all good after game 4. I know a few picked us to win the series in the prediction thread. Seems to me there was a poster or two along the way over the course of that series that would remind everyone it was in the bag. But I guess I’m wrong since the link is apparently non existent on my phone.

  97. Here’s another, post-Game 4: “Speed helps, but it can’t be all your team has. It has to have size, grit and will as well. Rangers don’t have a lot of the latter three and this series shows without the other three, speed is pretty useless.” Then they dropped the gritty Carcillo and won the series.

OK, fun’s over. I desist from the unfair quoting (so much fun, though!) Nobody but Miami was loving the Rangers at that point–even I was trading everyone–and it took Lundqvist standing on his head to pull it out. That and coos’ favorite moment in Rangers history, Richards’ GWG in Game 7.

In any event, it was a pain in the neck finding the old threads, but a fun trip down memory lane. Googled “rangers lohud may 7 2014” and proceeded to navigate around various archived items. Not even sure I could do it again.

  98. “One poster was saying they’d beat the Pens and go far even when they were down 3-1” So far, it’s only Miami whom intrepid journalists have been able to discover holding that opinion. Rangers in 6, before the series began, is off topic. Where is that smoking-gun quote, curious readers want to know!
