  7. The Rangers are supporting each other well in-zone, but spending almost the entire game there. 2-0 was too much to ask, but it would have required LA to commit even more forward, open up some counterattack. Now they can wait. I anticipate more of the same defensive style, hanging in without the three regulars, hoping for the occasional counter.

I voted shampoo boy, hated, and ein kleiner…in no particular order.

HM to sideshow bob and machine (who really seems to get under the skin of opponents a bit).

Speaking of sideshow bob, kings weren’t having any of his act, good for them. Also good for him getting a goal (which would not have happen if not for the stellar play by miller) after a bit of a drought.

Thought this was klein’s best game in a long time despite I think he was a minus 1 or 2.

Also thought this was a pretty good onions game from the goalie on out for the rangers (not sure they win a 7 game series like this, but onions).

Kings lineup is big and likes to play physical, but need a skill guy or two more to balance it out.

Now to go back a read the comments, I’m sure they’re great.

Kings are uber physical, but the one guy I would love to see tuned up one of these days is Doughty. Big time talker and whiner. Chirping McDonagh while going to the box after a bogus call.

It’s a hypothetical.) And surely there are recent Kings rosters you would have had at #1 at the time?

    Klein played a great game.

    Zuccarello scored.

It’s almost like the Rangers answered nearly every complaint expressed here on this blog over the past few weeks all in one game!

  23. When Puemple was on waivers, you have to wonder what teams like the Islanders, Devils, Lanch, and Yotes were thinking. How does he fall to the Rangers? There are a lot of poorly run organizations out there. Not saying Puemple is going to be a star, just that he is clearly an NHL player, and posses the ability to put the puck in the net. An ability that is often in demand in the NHL.

  24. I assume Sens though they could sneak him through waivers like Rangers and Dale Weise. If everybody ever gets healthy I think Pirri get waived and probably doesn’t make it to Hartford. They have at least 13 forwards who could play on most teams and Jooris didn’t make it through either.

  25. Welcome back Henrik! Not that the previous two games were bad or anything, but this game was what we have been accustomed to and what we expect with more frequency. Yes, Lundqvist stole this game that the team had no business winning because they were thoroughly outplayed, especially in the first two periods.

When fourth liners score that’s something the Rangers haven’t had in years, but other teams seem to kill them with. Shut down the top line guys and get beat by the fourth liner. I’m still not a big fan of Pumps, but if he can score every now and then he’ll win me over.

Klein getting a bit feisty. I like it.

Skjei isn’t afraid to take the body. He may need to grow a bit as a defenseman and he isn’t exactly a tough guy, but he takes the body when he has to.

  26. Ya know there might be something to Hank’s pleas for “structure” – he was horrendous coming out of the break when there was no net front presence at all which snowballed into a crisis of confidence infecting the whole team. Even last night, despite the number of shots and chances LA had, the team was clearly committed to giving Henrik support. He is literally a different goalie when he is feeling that around him – uber confident and sharp. Overall these past 2 games have been ugly wins, but you need those over 82 games and you really need them come playoff time. Here’s hoping that against Philly they play a complete game and Hank continues the upward swing.

  27. That was not a fancy pants game but none the less impressive the NYR did not fold under the pressure of the bigger, more physical team. And HL looked a lot more HL like – regardless of he play of those in front of him. Not sure what magic dust BenWhaa sprinkled on him, just hope he has a big bag of it. Good to see Pumpernickel be a feel good story, again. As to lines, think I would prefer to leave Beep where he was and drop Buch down, rather than bump VC up. My statement should have said the kings would be in my top 10-15 this season but I do think they need an additional skill player or two to balance out their line up (not sure if that makes more sense than the original post;))?!

My favourite rangers roster was probably 94-95 when they added the little ball of hate, the year before that…cup winner…and year after are also high on my list as well as 2012, 2014, and yes…2004 (ducks) until the slather fire sale, then I was not a fan.

As far as other teams go..I’ll just stick with this season due to freshness in my pea sized brain. Probably the ducks…size, skill, snarl, speed, faceoffs, decent depth. I also like edmonton’s roster a lot (not quite as good on faceoffs). Others I like are jets (when all healthy), flames, stars, jackets, wild.

Ducks and oilers would def be the first two picks though. Kings would be around 10 I think.

  30. The idea of all 5 playing below the dots to support this D is not a sustainable strategy. They had very little possession time as every break was started 180 feet from the other net.
No surprise they scored off of two bad plays by Kings D/Goalie.
The first goal was a gift pass by the kings to puree and the Miller play was a big boner by Jackoff.

  32. FG – no doubt Jay Tea gave him the head fake but a weak sauce Goalie pass to his D helped. Point is they scored off forecheck when putting pressure on Kings D.
The dish to the tape of Zucc’s stick was special. Good thing Zucc had nobody to pass to except a couple of Kings D.
Be interesting to see this new ‘structure’ against a team like Philthy that only has one good offensive line.

  33. When all the cowards are healthy, I don’t think they will waive any of them. For two reasons,
One, as we have seen this year, guys get hurt, they will need them again.
And two, if that ever make that trade for the Dman we all feel they need, it may very well be a two for. They will need to have Puemple, and Pirri for depth if that happens.

  34. Good morning, boneheads!
Is Hank back? It was all him last night. Or is it he? Where is Coos?
Interesting test they passed yesterday. Not sure they can do it for 7 games, but they got hit a lot and didn’t get intimidated. They do have some people to push back, apparently. MZA didn’t not disappear despite all this physicality, I felt that Vesey and Buchnevich looked a little timid.

    Liked by 1 person

  35. For the record, I’m not suggesting either of them is afraid of physicality. It’s possible that Buchnevich is a little wary of his fragile back, and Vesey is still finding his second wind

  38. Clendening has been fine. The NYR D is very hard to pair up given the invariability of performance. He has been a good RD3 Offensive D-man.

1-7-8 +6 in 17 games is not bad for a 24 yo with 67 total NHL games under his belt. He is 1st amongst NYR D in pts/60 all situations and makes smart plays out of zone. Definitely not a D stopper and will be riding the pine when Stall returns.
    .
On the Zucc goal The Miracle Met carried the puck through neutral zone, gained Ozone, drew 3 Kings players toward him and dumped puck behind net prior to Miller making the play of the game. The Puree goal was also a 4th line/3rd pair special.

  39. I have been praising Mr. Girardi often of late. He’s been the best Ranger defender for quite a few games, which may be more about others such as Holden and McDonagh slumping. But he’s been solid, and great to see all the D rebound these last couple games–not nearly the number of mistakes from that recent horrible stretch. Makes the Staal timetable easier to manage.

  41. Mid-season report: The Rangers have come out of a brief but eye-catching nosedive that pointed out the value of Booth, who has had a nice bounce-back season. It’s been impressive to see them ride out all the injuries, and now that Smog and Furious have been added to the list, their depth will continue to be tested. Nice to see Zit step up on his return, and Cheese has been solid, especially since he has stopped visiting the penalty box like it’s the Men’s room. And every time you think The Admiral is ready for Hartford—snipe!

The D seems finally to adjusted, especially since Gerund and Brougham have been paired and Over-you has rebounded from a truly foul stretch. Good to see him have Bread’s back last night. Chocolate’s steadiness through that stretch showed good leadership, and a good thing, too, since the younger vets, All-the-Cards and Old, have also been struggling. The defensive recovery, IMO, has allowed Coil to return to form, vital as we wait for Rayva’s return.

The offense, while not as responsible for the brief, deep slump, can’t be said to have helped much either, but it was always going to be tough to work Bridges, Cassidy and Earth-inheritor back in. Now that they’ve settled, the Rangers have, up until the Wings game at any rate, three potentially dangerous lines. Eyes-out still takes a game off every so often, but not as frequently to my eye, and My-toes is quietly putting together another very good 1/2-center season. Time has quite possibly been the Rangers best all-around forward, fast, physical, increasingly responsible, and By-the-arm is my mid-season MVP. Don’t know anyone who saw that one coming. Every game, it seems, he’s loose on a couple breakaways, and that defangs most teams when he’s on the ice. Finally, it was inevitable that Like-Sunday-morning would hit a wall mid-season–it will be interesting to see if he can fight through it in time for the playoffs. A rest here and there may help once they’re back to 14.

Girardi now in conversation for Norris.

The Gerund has some snarl. Doesn’t back down. I like his game.

    Shay finally showed up.

JT for Captain. He leveled somebody in the second period with a boner crunchy hit.

Looks like Run Tuh was wearing #30 as that was not the Hank of recent days.

Purée needs to shoot 200 pucks a day. That cannon is a poor man’s Ovi from the right circle. In face Zucc and step should be on the ice doing the same – with Stepan on the left circle and Zucc in the right.

Also, Idk how much of this Puempel kid we’ll see in the long run, but for right now it looks like a good move picking up a former 1st rounder off waivers and inserting him into a style of play that suits him very well. He’s been on record as not getting along with Guy Boucher and how he likes the style of play here much more. Solid 4th line addition despite the health concerns.

  47. James, speaking of that strategy, Stefan Noesen, drafted thre spots ahead of Puempel, was waived today by the Ducks. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us make a claim for him. We are seemingly trying to collect every player we can from the first 40 in that draft. Zibanejad, Miller, Puempel, Jensen, Clendening, Hellberg.

  48. Speaking of players taken in the top 40 of the 2011 draft, Elliotte Friedman reporting that pick #35 Tomas Jurco is looking to be moved and Detroit is looking to accommodate him.

For the record, I though there was a group of forwards in that draft, including him, Noesen, Puempel, Jensen, Armia, and maybe a couple of others that were all really similar to each other in terms of how to project them as pros, and they’ve all fallen short of even the modest projections I had for them (3rd liners, maybe 2nd liners in a pinch). They were all wingers, they were all a similar size (Puempel a bit smaller), and they were all scorers. But none of their offense has really translated yet to the pros.

JT has come back strong after a reminder earlier in Dec, Kevin Bongs entire year, to me, is a reflection of the tough love AV gave him last season. That said, its a long season and like race horses, even top guys are going to have off nights.

  53. I don’t disagree with tough love Beezle it can motivate a player. I just have a hunch he gets frustrated playing with Step and Zuc at times. He’s a waste of talent on the 4th line. Sometines pointing out to a player what’s right with him is better than pointing out what’s wrong with him by demotion, just a though!

  54. St Pete – I think AV’s reaction was to a few of shifts where Kreider made a couple of careless little passes that resulted in turnovers. He gets too cute sometimes which is not his game – his is 100% a power game. It was just before Puempel replaced him on the Step line and scored. I’m as big a fan of #20 as anybody but he does take some shifts off where he wanders defensively, makes ill-advised passes and just doesn’t bust it. When he does bust it, he’s a beast, and AV must think he sometimes needs a quick wake up call at times. That said, I think it worked because right after that brief demotion, he was back to being a force.

  55. Kreids also got slammed into the wall early in 1st by Derek Forbort (the version of McIlwrath; 1st round big D with no NHL success yet) and was mostly listless after that. NYR needed him in beast mode against the Kings of LA, not playing patty cake with Step.

  57. I would not be concerned at all about Kreider playing 4th line for a period or two. It’s a long season and it’s tough on them mentally and physically. Gives him a break and gave another player a chance to get a few more minutes.
