In January 2010, I was at a Rangers game against the Devils. Regulation and overtime both ended with the score 0-0. The first three shooters in the shootout all failed to score. Finally, in the fourth round of the shootout, Patrik Elias scored to give the Devils a 1-0 shootout win. Despite the lack of goals, it was unquestionably the best game of the season to that point and probably for the rest of he season.
Yesterday’s 1-0 overtime win against the Red Wings was not that.

Charlie,
Obviously I disagree. During the OT, Zibanijad changed for Stepan, who changed for Miller. McD changed for Holden, who changed for Skjei. Zucc replaced Nash and never left the ice. I believe he came on the ice with 420 to go. He could have changed twice during that time. Both times chose not to. On the goal, he was knocked down at the wing blue line, gave up the puck and stayed there. Didn’t change, didn’t hustle back. He was fortunate that Skjei and Miller made the plays they made.

That was a great play by Skjei. For a player who has had his defensive capabilities so often criticized here, that was a game saving and winning play.

And the Rangers were fortunate he made the great dish. At least there’s that!

So how long was his shift, 50 seconds?

Minute 10 or so. 3 on 3 Norm.

Bdl,
Thanks for the breakdown of that play.
Does the team & coaching staff give Zucc such freedom or is just taking liberties?

Norm asked that last night, noble.
I lean towards he has the green light. The other 17 skaters who dress are very disciplined when it comes to that. I hope the coach isn’t just looking the other way.

All the best to you and your family, Headzo
Going through hard times myself, as I had to hospitalize my 90 year old father on Saturday. He is, unfortunately, all downhill since my mom passed
Watched the game very late, was falling asleep. Is that what we are going to see more often after the ASG? Hope not.
BDL is correct, Zucc stayed for 2 extra shifts. I was thinking to myself, they are going to pay for this. They did. The Detroit that is. But I agree, if Skjei doesn’t intercept the puck, it’s probably 2 points for Detroit. All 3, at the end, did the right thing, including Zucc who froze the goaltender before passing it Miller.

The 3 on 3 was made for guys like Shea with wheels to spare.
Not overly impressed with Détroit du lac Érié but they out-chanced NYR and forced all 5 NYRs on ice to support below the dots. Still using the on-puck interference play.
Wonder if this style marks the new NYR reality; moving away from the AV Go Go Style to get Henk going again at the expense of offensive.
Zika with some very good D behind net late in game.
A boring game beginning at 12:30pm; who knew that could happen.
Zucc made a great play on the dish to JT; could not even tell if the puck made it over since it was such a bang-bang play.
Did we get rid of Puree yet?

A) Well, I didn’t see [Zucc’s shift], and it worked, but 80 seconds is a lot.
B) During yesterday’s little debate about The Zook, SN arguing the case against, me for, there was some back-and-forth about primary assists, assists/min., etc. It reminded me of Wicky’s good point about his tendency to disappear when the going got tight, particularly in the playoffs; and Carp’s point last season about his being the the Rangers’ best PP forward/passer, I think? Thanks to the website SN steered me to, it’s interesting to discover that Zucc, 5-on-5, is the clear leader in primaries, and Zook’n’Book in primaries/min. When you go to PP-only stats, though, his numbers plummet. It’s a small sample size, to be sure, and perhaps he’ll return to last season’s very good PP numbers by May, but it bears watching. Perhaps AV switches him and Buch on the #1/2 PP units, even if that breaks up lines a bit.

Hayes injury not good, but the Rangers have been relatively OK this year, 12th in man-games lost with 120. You’d rather be the Caps, who have only lost 13 (!), but good not to be Detroit (322 forkin’ man-games!)

I really do think that Hayes’ injury came on that back check (Quite a change from Hayes last year) on Dylan Larkin, where Larkin’s missed “trip” pulled on Hayes left leg (I believe). It wasn’t until later that I realized Vesey was skating more shifts and figured it was Hayes that wasn’t skating. From what I remember noticing the missed trip, it probably caused an MCL sprain.
LikeLike
Mile High – I think that was the play. So Larkin had that uncalled trip and the trip/hook/slew foot on Shea Butter. Saw Nash had a really good hit on Larkin along boards at end of 1st a shift or two after the cross check against him was not called.
LikeLike
Norm – the PP stat is the one that sticks out to me with Zucc. I concur on switching Butch to unit 1. Puree and Zucc on the same side of the ice lead to a lot of pucks cleared out of zone as well.
Last season Zucc was 2nd on team with PP goals (6) and 4th in PP pts/60. There was a connection with Brass on PP and 5v5 that cannot be discounted.
