Having said that, they should know by now that playing @MSG is going to inspire opponents (especially ones from sh*tty arenas and cities) and that the only answer is to come out all guns blazing, hit everything, get in their faces and shoot the puck more. Make them work for it. Too may times we come out and are too slow to get going, gives the opponent time to settle.

2 things- first of all, this is the second game in as many where Lundqvist really looked to be regaining his confidence. He’s let up 4 goals in the last three games and none of them were one of those pull your hair out while watching the replay kinda goals. He got just enough support in the first two and didn’t get support in any form from his team.
Secondly, When Nash went out with his annual groin injury, he was red hot. the best forward on the team. My worry was that he would come back and not register much activity on that Nash-o-meter. My inkling was correct apparently. 3 goals against Zatkoff isn’t enough of an argument to argue otherwise. I know it’s heresy to question our coach who is the king of regular season performance and all, but I would think maybe going back to some line combinations that seemed to have chemistry for a game (hell, I’ll take a period) might make some degree of sense? especially with Hayes -offensively your best center all year- out for a couple of weeks.

Always entertaining to see Girardi, a 32 year-old, 10 year veteran stand in front of the net staring at and impeding Henrik while all kinds of untempered mayhem prevails behind his back. Granted, the ‘brains’ of the NFL now only value Dmen with a good first pass, a quick transition, and an ability to sustain offensive zone time, none of which are within Danny’s bailiwick. Therefore, his usefulness can only come from a sturdy, effective excellence around his own net. A nice guy, an aging warrior, but someone has to state facts: He’s here because he is overpaid, over-contracted, and we are stuck in unfortunate circumstances.
LikeLiked by 1 person
Wicky, correct sir. Zucc should get some kind of time with Miller and Grabs and I think Vesey should play with Nash and Step again. Could get both those wingers going like they were before Nash’s injury and this over hyped “freshman fatigue” set in. Plus by default that puts the Zibanejad line from the beginning of the year back together.

Funny you should bring that up, last night we were watching the ducks oilers game and bieksa did an opg which led to an oilers goal and the announcer was livid. He ranted (not raanta) for five minutes about that is such a terrible play and you have to stay on your skates and take the body.
LikeLike
Larry Robinson insisted the Devils D-men never leave their skates. And they did OK when he was a coach there.
Also we saw last night — I think it was last night, but might have been the LA game — McDonagh perfectly play a 2-on-1, taking away the pass by playing the man without the puck, forcing the shooter to shoot. Instead of, you know, cleaning the ice in the slot with the front of his jersey.

Finally got to a replay. Shocker of a game for Grabner (Rangers MVP so far IMO) sort of a 4-goal swing when you consider his two big misses, his failed clearance on the PP-goal, his own-goal for the Flyers’ second. That said, I thought the Flyers defended well, that their goalie was uncharacteristically great, and that the Rangers played pretty well [ducks, runs away in a serpentine pattern, lobbing “Finally started a game on the front foot!” over his shoulder.]

Wick – what is the role of the Defensive coach? I know they are out of options on the back line but there needs to be some redirection/accountability for bad habits that are ending in the back of the net too often.

Let me get this straight. It’s not on the players to motivate themselves (that’s AV’s job, which he evidently sucks at) but it is on the players to execute proper defensive technique? That seems backwards to me.

I would think (was never a coach so maybe norm could answer this) the D coach responsibility was to coach the D within the overall system parameters of the system the head coach has the team playing. Just speculation on my part though.

Wick – Last year during the AV show or whatever it’s called with Pidto and AV ; Ulfie was talking about how he shows video to each player individually to review each week their performance in certain situations. I would imaging this has been discussed.
.
They say it takes actively practicing a new habit 16 to 21 days to break a bad habit. I just think some players have it in their DNA from way back and it is too hard to reprogram in the heat of the battle after playing that way the 15 years of hockey.
.
Or not, who knows?

I do think when the team is struggling in the game, it’s the coach’s responsibility to “peel some paint off the walls” during an intermission or call a time out and get them to refocus. I think AV does a not so good job of this. He’s excellent at chewing gum though.
–
I also think it is on the players to not continue bad habits (I’m going out on a limb in reference to this topic that the coaches have told players to not snow angel) at the professional level. You have to know that the snow angel is not a smart play, my guess a bit of a panic move, and it’s on the players to realize it makes matters worse.
LikeLike
I know nothing about the many-coach world of the NHL. I would imagine it varies wildly from team to team what the various roles are, that some head coaches still teach, that others are skilled delegators, and everything in between. You read about AV delegating motivation to his team leaders, which makes sense in the long term. I can say that at the high school level you will often see coaches give the team room to the captains between periods when it’s been less a question of execution and adjustments than energy.
LikeLike
To your other point, I would argue that it’s simplistic to say the snow angel is always a bad play. It’s the perfect play, for example, if you know your guy is an average stickhandler/passer, or if he’s past the dots.
LikeLike
SN
Right. I think the D coach does go over their performance. That would be his job and the main reason for his job. But I don’t think that is an autonomous coaching position eg head coach system is for team to play a zone defencive style and the D coach says no, my D are going to play man to man regardless of the head coach’s system.
–
The D coach is responsible (imo) for coaching the D men in the system of choice of the head coach.
–
I do not think it is coincidence that now 2 different D coaches have apparently been “terrible” at coaching D men in AV’s system. Or it’s the D men that are the problem literally from top to bottom.

Other than maybe that last desperation diver when a guy is on a breakaway and you better get the puck with your stick (more likely to trip the guy), I’m not the biggest fan of leaving your skates. If you séparate the guy from the puck, highly unlikely he scores. You can’t do that from the snow angel position as the guy waits for you to slide by to shoot and you have now removed yourself from the possibility of clearing the rebound as well. I just think it is a panic move for bad positioning (just like the dive at the guy on the breakaway is).

Except that sometimes the snow angel works–especially if you’re able, like most NHLers, to pop back to your feet in nanoseconds and get back in the play–and didn’t we just see a desperation dive pulled off by McD the other day, covering his own giveaway? I’m just saying there’s no one way, that the game evolves and certain heresies fade away (the butterfly, pulling the goalie with more than 45 seconds left, skating to the bench only when going forward, many others we can think of) and coaches react to other coaches’ innovations almost constantly. Heresies come and go on this site, too, otherwise it would be a pretty bland place. Snow angels angels and wish passes come immediately to mind. Others?

I didn’t say it never worked, just not the best habit/idea imo.

I think the biggest problem with the snow angel, in Rangers terms, is that they are not just going down to break up the play. As has been pointed out, the Rangers d-men have the uncanny ability (he said sarcastically) to go down in a snow angel slide – which usually takes them out of the play.
Norm had it right. You down to block the pass or block the shot and then get up as quickly as possible – which the Rangers can’t do most of the time because they look like they are “sledding” and not “snow angelling”. I think the snow angel has its place in the game as long as it done properly.
Then again, I am a person who thinks most people are wrong in how players/teams defend the 2-on-1. The adage is for the defender to play the man without the puck while the goalie takes the shooter. I say nay-nay.
I didn’t play organized hockey other than weekly pickup games and street hockey leagues and played defense and goal. On defense I played in between both attackers and shaded the puck carrier. I wanted him to make the pass because there are a lot of things that have to go right. He has to make a good pass that I can’t poke away (and I was good at it). The other attacker has to handle the pass cleanly and then attempt the shot. If I am playing the player without the puck then the guy with it has a clean shot. Also have to say that I didn’t always have the best goaltenders either.
When I played goal (always in ice hockey and in a couple of relief appearances on the street) I wanted my d-men to play the same way. I always felt more comfortable on a bang-bang play in front then on a guy coming down the wing for an open shot. Given my circumstances on the ice, I was darn good goalie too!
Quick FYI, the guy who ran the street hockey leagues in New Rochelle later became the Iona College hockey coach Frank Bretti. Shared a lot of good times and bad times covering Coach Bretti and the (Ice) Gaels. I miss the games, the guys but definitely npot the bus trips from hell!

At the NHL level, you have to play the the passing lane, and perfect positioning is the difference between an OK and a great defender. You can’t skate too close to the weak side or you give the shooter the middle. But if you get too close to the shooter, it’s too big a risk. A good forward will slide it or saucer it through at speed, and the goalie has to have great anticipation and an incredible push to stop the one-time shot (see Mason on Nash last night–if Nash had been able to elevate it, no chance).
There’s a lost art to the 2-on-1 that you only see occasionally these days, which is when the puck carrier, rather than skating a straight lane, skates towards the middle just enough to draw the defender–if the defender bites, the carrier veers off and dishes to a shooter who now has better position. If the defender does not bite, the carrier now has a better shooting angle for himself.

Norm, me too. Goalie on ice, left winger in street hockey.

Goalies play for free in every beer league I’ve been part of. I’m not quite cheap enough to try it. Or crazy enough. When I coached, I’d do it once a season to make my players happy.

Good morning Boneheads TGIF and no Ranger game to whine over! 5th in Metro still a possibility! My question which team takes the ice after the break? Oct. Champs or Jan. Chumps? I love this team just not sure they have the fire to make a statement under this coach! Will The enigma force us to change his name down the stretch? And where is The Miami Pimp?
