  7. 4 of top 5 teams in fighting majors are playoff teams…weird.

That being said, it’s not at all about fighting in the least bit (at least not to me), it’s more about overall time and space going away and a bit more push back.

I don’t think they would, but you’d know better than me. I just don’t remember a team leading the league in fights winning it.

  13. Carp, with all due respect, you’re not a fan. You don’t understand the misery that goes along with being a Ranger fan. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop.

For me- I hope for the best and expect the worst. If I always wanted to feel positive as a fan I’d go root for the pens.

  14. Maybe LA is trying to pry Grabner or Zucc away from the Rangers. Rangers have been following them and their AHL club (Ontario) for over a month. If the Rangers are hunting for a defenseman, I wish they would shop in Anaheim instead.

  17. I get most of that, Scottsdale. What I don’t get is the lack of appreciation of having one of the best teams in the league for most of the last five years or so, and certainly this year. … and the give-up with a team that has shown a remarkable knack for coming from behind … and how so many here predictably disappear during a 9-1-1 streak and show up at the first sign of adversity.

  18. Tough to win when your D-men consistently leave guys wide open in front and your top 9 forwards refuse to screen a goalie other than their own Also doesn’t help when your top two centers are bringing very little to the table offensively especially on the PP.

  19. What CAN’T you do playing against a good team if you hope to win:
    1. Let in goal on their first shot.
2 Let in goal in the first 1 to 5 min.
    3. Let in more than 1 soft/bad goal in game.
    4. Not to finish 5 out of 5 “A” given opportunities to score.
    5. Hesitating more than o.5 sec. having puck on tape before making decision in any zone, defensive in particular.
    6. Yawn on the bench from boredom, trailing just 1 goal.
Today’s game in anti-theses of that. Period.

I don’t see how anyone can look at this must-win game, converted into the most devastating loss in the last five years, as other than the clearest signal yet that it’s long past time to clear out this roster, lose this coach (he chews GUM, for crying out loud). Any idiot who appreciates what this team has accomplished over the last ten games, and five years for that matter, is beyond delusional.

  26. Wow the negativity here is crazy. They played 5 games in a week and the last 3 went to OT. They were tired and Columbus was not. Plus Bob was really good. Hank has been insanely good for his last 14 or so games and had a tough one tonight. But he got zero help from his D on at least 3 of those goals and then started the dreaded overcompensating act. I say this had loss written all over it from the get go given the tough schedule and the strain of 3 OTs in a row. So let’s relax!!

  27. As Ranger fans we all want to see this team raise the cup. The truth is it isn’t happening with this group. This to me was a statement game, and the only statement made was by the Jackets! Gorton must realize this and make the painful moves at the deadline for the future. He failed to do that last year he can’t do it again. I have said it before and got shot down, Stepan, Nash, and Zucc must go up front. Girardi has to be bought out. Anyone who really believes this team will last more then 1 round is dreaming! They are as soft as Doctors cotton!

How on earth can we not see that this ends the season? And playoffs? How do they make the playoffs after THIS? I’m surprised we haven’t heard reports yet from the Garden about players blowing town, heading for the islands. They know, they know… I mean, sure, play out the rest of the schedule with the Hartford guys–they’d have a helluva better chance than these useless mugs, and there are those with season tickets, after all, but what is the point of it all? Where IS everyone?!? Oh, hi, Eric.

  33. Losing one is not a big deal, but, the special teams are becoming a problem. PP doesn’t produce and they allow a critical PP goal in every game now. I think Healy did mention that on the third goal the was no D zone coverage. They just ran around and didn’t pick anybody up. There are problems, but, this isn’t 1994. This team has holes and will have to be lucky to make a cup run. Tonight the BJs were the better team. The Rangers have to figure out how to be the better team on 4 out of 7 nights.

  34. Two observations:

    1. Is it me, or is a penalty shot just not the big deal it once was? Seems to me, it used to be a very rare and exciting moment in a hockey game. Now, with shootouts being a regular occurrence, it’s lost some of it’s luster.
    2. Wasn’t it just a couple of seasons ago the league was trying to speed up the game by dropping the puck faster on faceoffs and trying to move the game along? Now what do they do? They implement coaches’ challenges and video replays and slow the game down tremendously. And the officials are looking at these replays on these relatively small screens. You can’t tell me they don’t have some kind of modern technology, what with lasers and such, that couldn’t determine if the puck is in the net. And stop with the stupid off-sides reviews already.
    3. Okay, three observations. Regarding the negativity on this blog- I believe Carp himself said in the beginning of last season that, even though they were winning games, the Rangers were doing quite a few things wrong and that, if they kept it up, the wheels were going to fall off. I believe they did pretty much fall off. I believe they got to the playoffs because of what they did in the beginning of the season. I don’t understand why this season, Carp can’t see that a lot of the games they’re winning, they shouldn’t be. They’re winning despite the fact that they never seem to be firing on all cylinders. If they ever do, I believe they’ll be unbeatable. This IS a talented team.

    1) The Rangers are now back in the 1st wildcard spot. The playoff system that has the Metro’s 2nd and 3rd teams play in the 1st round this year is a disgrace. It should be changed.
    2) As impressive as the team’s record has been of late, we don’t want Gorton to think the team is better than it actually is, only to realize how wrong he was the day after the trade deadline.

Here’s hoping he makes move or two that improve the team without mortgaging the future.

Am I correct that the Rangers are able to bring in close to 10 mill in salary at the deadline? If this is accurate, do really think they are staying put? I don’t. With LA. Where is smoke, there is fire. LA has had interest in Zucc in the past.

Though NYR have some issues (some however come and go) so do all these teams, fans just ignore the box scores if they aren’t playing their team. At this point, I don’t want or expect any major move into the deadline. The East is too much of a crapshoot this year and I don’t see any move putting them far in front of the competition.

  43. We do have around $10m in deadline space – $2.375 in full season cap space (also something to consider if it’s more than a rental), with Mika, Oscar and Quickie to re-sign (not counting Clendening, Pirri & Puempel)

  44. Shatty update:

The rental price for Shattenkirk is reportedly a first round pick, top prospect and “something else,” according to Bob McKenzie

McKenzie also noted that three teams in the past year have made deals with St. Louis for Shattenkirk pending that a contract extension could be signed

He said that Shattenkrik reportedly turned down an extension of seven-years and $6 million per season during those talks. (ouch!)

  45. Whichever way you look at the Girardi buyout it doesnt look great.
    If done this year $2.6m, 2 x $3.6m then 3 x $1.1m – if done next summer its 2 x $3.5m and 2 x $1.1m.

All of this has to be calculated in the Shatty signing, or they’ll have 2 or 3 more years of Girardi and need to lose 2 of Klein, Holden and Staal.

The Rangers need to get back to basics all these fancy passes trying to score on the rush isn’t going to cut it the playoffs. The reason it worked for the pens last year is simlpy put, Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Kessel!

  51. Morning all…love the smell of trade talk in the morning!!

I think the rangers will do something….I’d be shocked if pirri isn’t moved (although there is supposedly more interest in puemple than pirri), I’d hockey trade sideshow bob in a heartbeat. If burrows moves, the conventional wisdom out of the Vancouver outlets seems to be the rangers. On after hours the other night, they did a great interview with burrows (I’d encourage anyone to watch it, he’s an amazing story despite what you think of him on ice) and he seems really torn about moving away from his wife and 3 kids and playing in the post season.

I’m a bit intrigued about how the shattenkirk (a player I’m personally not interested in seeing the rangers acquire) situation plays out. I think he has a true desire to play for the rangers, I’m not sure what his $$$ demands will be (they might be close to the 7×6 he turned down if in the right location, but I think gorton is looking at a lot of options.

Big question is who goes the other way in any deal (if any happen).

One note on sideshow bob, I still say he’s means as much to this team off the scoresheet as he does on (I know, norm hates intangibles…sorry norm). I’d still trade him in the right deal though.

  52. I’m pretty sure that conditional is a potential 1st or 2nd. Also, don’t forget Ryan white was included in the deal, role player, but valuable. Interesting note, wild were saying how they were needing to get some size and bite for the post season (I still think they gave up A LOT to get a player to neutralize Toews, but that’s the deal a team makes if they have a legit shot and upper management knows it).

That’s why the rangers will not a win a cup. They finally won a cup in 94 because they traded for half of the Oilers team from the 80’s that still had something left in the tank or else they still wouldn’t have won a cup since 1940.
