I’ll say it again…the first goal was in no way Hank’s fault. I rag on him as much as the next guy but it’s difficult to stop a puck that gets deflected right in front of you. Plus he still almost had it.

That being said, it’s not at all about fighting in the least bit (at least not to me), it’s more about overall time and space going away and a bit more push back.
When the Rangers consistently can’t score when dominated offensively and other team do, with less chances – it is a game of goalkeepers, means their is better. It is this simple and luck has nothing to do with it.
That was a good illustration – Bobr practically didn’t make ANY mistakes, which I can’t say about our heralded. (for all fairness, Hank made remarkable saves on brakes away and penalty shot).
If the Rangers don’t get a point this evening for the first time in I-don’t-know-how-many games, the roster needs to be shredded and rebuilt from the ground up.

No trade call yet, but MIN and ARI are working to finalize a trade involving Martin Hanzal.
Carp, with all due respect, you’re not a fan. You don’t understand the misery that goes along with being a Ranger fan. Always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
For me- I hope for the best and expect the worst. If I always wanted to feel positive as a fan I’d go root for the pens.
Maybe LA is trying to pry Grabner or Zucc away from the Rangers. Rangers have been following them and their AHL club (Ontario) for over a month. If the Rangers are hunting for a defenseman, I wish they would shop in Anaheim instead.
If only, Wick, if only. This roster is as soft as ultra-soft cotton-y cotton. No pushback, no onions, too many lefty sticks. No way they survive a playoff series against real men.
What’s with this Gavon!! Everyone I watch this goalie play he loses! Make the other guy the number one already. I know what to do. Why don’t those whores!
I get most of that, Scottsdale. What I don’t get is the lack of appreciation of having one of the best teams in the league for most of the last five years or so, and certainly this year. … and the give-up with a team that has shown a remarkable knack for coming from behind … and how so many here predictably disappear during a 9-1-1 streak and show up at the first sign of adversity.
Tough to win when your D-men consistently leave guys wide open in front and your top 9 forwards refuse to screen a goalie other than their own Also doesn’t help when your top two centers are bringing very little to the table offensively especially on the PP.
What CAN’T you do playing against a good team if you hope to win:
1. Let in goal on their first shot.
2 Let in goal in the first 1 to 5 min.
3. Let in more than 1 soft/bad goal in game.
4. Not to finish 5 out of 5 “A” given opportunities to score.
5. Hesitating more than o.5 sec. having puck on tape before making decision in any zone, defensive in particular.
6. Yawn on the bench from boredom, trailing just 1 goal.
Today’s game in anti-theses of that. Period.
I think another thing that’s happening here is that despite the winning streak and good season overall, many people are starting to see some of the same things that got the Rangers eliminated very quickly last year.
The fact of the matter is that it’s just this simple, black-and-white, you get it or you don’t–the Rangers, clear as the nose on your face, no use kidding ourselves, plain as day. Suck.
Was I ever surprised when I saw a pair of NHL Star Anson Carter Ex Hall of Fame socks on sale at Kohl’s for 99 cents. Gobbled them up, needless to say.
I don’t see why they even bother playing the next game. It’s over. All they need to do is look here, and we’ll tell them, no nonsense: quit, you’re done.
” how so many here predictably disappear during a 9-1-1 streak and show up at the first sign of adversity.” I’m kind of the opposite ,,, It’s hard to be here when we suck but when we win I love to be around cheering!!!
Too much whining for loss to a good team ..Rangers are in decent shape ..remember this team was not supposed to make the playoffs…Vescey had a nice game..guy is gonna be a beast in a year or two
No heart, no guts, no coach, no D, no goaltending. It’s over, I say, over. I don’t see how anyone can look at this must-win game, converted into the most devastating loss in the last five years, as other than the clearest signal yet that it’s long past time to clear out this roster, lose this coach (he chews GUM, for crying out loud). Any idiot who appreciates what this team has accomplished over the last ten games, and five years for that matter, is beyond delusional.
Wow the negativity here is crazy. They played 5 games in a week and the last 3 went to OT. They were tired and Columbus was not. Plus Bob was really good. Hank has been insanely good for his last 14 or so games and had a tough one tonight. But he got zero help from his D on at least 3 of those goals and then started the dreaded overcompensating act. I say this had loss written all over it from the get go given the tough schedule and the strain of 3 OTs in a row. So let’s relax!!
As Ranger fans we all want to see this team raise the cup. The truth is it isn’t happening with this group. This to me was a statement game, and the only statement made was by the Jackets! Gorton must realize this and make the painful moves at the deadline for the future. He failed to do that last year he can’t do it again. I have said it before and got shot down, Stepan, Nash, and Zucc must go up front. Girardi has to be bought out. Anyone who really believes this team will last more then 1 round is dreaming! They are as soft as Doctors cotton!
Sittoo, wake up. Face the music. Smell the coffee. Stop drinking the Kool-aid. Look at the writing on the wall. It’s not only the last period the Rangers lost. It’s the one before that. And the one before THAT! It’s been going for a while. Hank hasn’t been himself for hours, and it’s hard to see how he ever plays well in the future. The D? Good God! The O? Will they ever score again? Whoa is us!!
I’m running amok on the ledge, knocking everything over. I can’t believe everyone can’t see what I see. It’s as clear as day, for crying out loud. The Rangers just LOST A GAME! How on earth can we not see that this ends the season? And playoffs? How do they make the playoffs after THIS? I’m surprised we haven’t heard reports yet from the Garden about players blowing town, heading for the islands. They know, they know… I mean, sure, play out the rest of the schedule with the Hartford guys–they’d have a helluva better chance than these useless mugs, and there are those with season tickets, after all, but what is the point of it all? Where IS everyone?!? Oh, hi, Eric.
Your an opposing coach and you need to get by the Rangers to move on in the Playoffs. Hmmm. What tactic to take? What is their weakness and how do we stymie their strengths? Answer: Slam McDonagh incessantly and forecheck the rest of them big time. Control center ice. Intimidate.
Doubt the Rangers win again this season. But then, Jesus is the reason, arrested for treason, coughing and wheezin, the ocean air is breezin, achoo I’m sneazin….
Norm I adore you! You always make me laugh. And I’m right there with you! Relax people and take a deeeeep breath. I did giggle at Hank in the postgame interview. He gave poor Giannone such a stink eye!
Losing one is not a big deal, but, the special teams are becoming a problem. PP doesn’t produce and they allow a critical PP goal in every game now. I think Healy did mention that on the third goal the was no D zone coverage. They just ran around and didn’t pick anybody up. There are problems, but, this isn’t 1994. This team has holes and will have to be lucky to make a cup run. Tonight the BJs were the better team. The Rangers have to figure out how to be the better team on 4 out of 7 nights.
1. Is it me, or is a penalty shot just not the big deal it once was? Seems to me, it used to be a very rare and exciting moment in a hockey game. Now, with shootouts being a regular occurrence, it’s lost some of it’s luster.
2. Wasn’t it just a couple of seasons ago the league was trying to speed up the game by dropping the puck faster on faceoffs and trying to move the game along? Now what do they do? They implement coaches’ challenges and video replays and slow the game down tremendously. And the officials are looking at these replays on these relatively small screens. You can’t tell me they don’t have some kind of modern technology, what with lasers and such, that couldn’t determine if the puck is in the net. And stop with the stupid off-sides reviews already.
3. Okay, three observations. Regarding the negativity on this blog- I believe Carp himself said in the beginning of last season that, even though they were winning games, the Rangers were doing quite a few things wrong and that, if they kept it up, the wheels were going to fall off. I believe they did pretty much fall off. I believe they got to the playoffs because of what they did in the beginning of the season. I don’t understand why this season, Carp can’t see that a lot of the games they’re winning, they shouldn’t be. They’re winning despite the fact that they never seem to be firing on all cylinders. If they ever do, I believe they’ll be unbeatable. This IS a talented team.
What’s with you scumbagos? Making jokes about a deceased man? Celebrating Atlanta Hawks? Listen up. You guys need to learn what being a New York fan is about! It’s about DIGNITY. I’ll call out any bozos that need to be outed. Listen to me now. We barely beat those yoyos from jersey. That’s a big problem. Then we get our butts jacked up by some team from Ohio??? We gots problems people. Open your eyes. Bunch of bozos you guys are acting like. Bozos!!
I missed almost the entire game as I was coaching my son’s Squirt game. I’m sure I’d be more upset if I saw the game, but since I didn’t, I think an (ugly?) loss might not be a bad thing.
1) The Rangers are now back in the 1st wildcard spot. The playoff system that has the Metro’s 2nd and 3rd teams play in the 1st round this year is a disgrace. It should be changed.
2) As impressive as the team’s record has been of late, we don’t want Gorton to think the team is better than it actually is, only to realize how wrong he was the day after the trade deadline.
Here’s hoping he makes move or two that improve the team without mortgaging the future.
I love NY Sports, its the only place in the world where you can have a team that are top 4 in their conference yet the fans will want the team ripping to pieces, slate their star player(s) for 1 bad game and forget that they’re 7-2-1 in their last 10 games.
Last time i checked if you scored more goals than the other team, you won. There aren’t a panel of judges analysing CORSI and other advanced stats and awarding points?
The team are in the top 4 in the East, the standings don’t lie after 62 games.
Good morning, boneheads!
Wow, one bad loss and we have over 500 comments. 100 comments per GA means this place is in the playoffs form already! 🙂
If what Minnesota payed to get Hanzal, an UFA, is any indication of what rentals might cost this year, I’d stay put if I were Gorton.
Ilb,
Am I correct that the Rangers are able to bring in close to 10 mill in salary at the deadline? If this is accurate, do really think they are staying put? I don’t. With LA. Where is smoke, there is fire. LA has had interest in Zucc in the past.
“The Rangers have to figure out how to be the better team on 4 out of 7 nights.” Exactly. Though NYR have some issues (some however come and go) so do all these teams, fans just ignore the box scores if they aren’t playing their team. At this point, I don’t want or expect any major move into the deadline. The East is too much of a crapshoot this year and I don’t see any move putting them far in front of the competition.
We do have around $10m in deadline space – $2.375 in full season cap space (also something to consider if it’s more than a rental), with Mika, Oscar and Quickie to re-sign (not counting Clendening, Pirri & Puempel)
Whichever way you look at the Girardi buyout it doesnt look great.
If done this year $2.6m, 2 x $3.6m then 3 x $1.1m – if done next summer its 2 x $3.5m and 2 x $1.1m.
All of this has to be calculated in the Shatty signing, or they’ll have 2 or 3 more years of Girardi and need to lose 2 of Klein, Holden and Staal.
The price for Hanzal was insane. If that is what the market is set at, it looks like Toronto is going to get ALL the first round picks for JVR and Bozak.
I think we have to stand pat given the prices flying around, especially given as they could sign Shatty as a UFA – albeit by trading away 1 or 2 players to create the cap space, and losing someone to the Vegas horsemen.
Last night was one of those games where i got blacked out thanks to the NHL’s broadcast deal with an obscure satellite network in the UK (way to go Bettman & co!), which given that it was an early start was a shame. In the end it turned out to be a blessing…..no late night, no transatlantic ledge visit
Look I’m not saying the Rangers aren’t a good talented team, but last nights loss to a division rival was just way too easy for the CBJ’s. The Rangers need to get back to basics all these fancy passes trying to score on the rush isn’t going to cut it the playoffs. The reason it worked for the pens last year is simlpy put, Crosby, Malkin, Letang, and Kessel!
Morning all…love the smell of trade talk in the morning!!
–
I think the rangers will do something….I’d be shocked if pirri isn’t moved (although there is supposedly more interest in puemple than pirri), I’d hockey trade sideshow bob in a heartbeat. If burrows moves, the conventional wisdom out of the Vancouver outlets seems to be the rangers. On after hours the other night, they did a great interview with burrows (I’d encourage anyone to watch it, he’s an amazing story despite what you think of him on ice) and he seems really torn about moving away from his wife and 3 kids and playing in the post season.
–
I’m a bit intrigued about how the shattenkirk (a player I’m personally not interested in seeing the rangers acquire) situation plays out. I think he has a true desire to play for the rangers, I’m not sure what his $$$ demands will be (they might be close to the 7×6 he turned down if in the right location, but I think gorton is looking at a lot of options.
–
Big question is who goes the other way in any deal (if any happen).
–
One note on sideshow bob, I still say he’s means as much to this team off the scoresheet as he does on (I know, norm hates intangibles…sorry norm). I’d still trade him in the right deal though.
I’m pretty sure that conditional is a potential 1st or 2nd. Also, don’t forget Ryan white was included in the deal, role player, but valuable. Interesting note, wild were saying how they were needing to get some size and bite for the post season (I still think they gave up A LOT to get a player to neutralize Toews, but that’s the deal a team makes if they have a legit shot and upper management knows it).
Buttman: “No, wait a minute. Pittsburgh did not win the Stanley Cup. Captain Crosby, return the cup to me immediately. Captain McDonagh, please accept our apologies and claim the Cup! Sorry for the mixup.”
Hmmm – thinking that if the Rs play it right and cross over into the Atlantic we could get a Habs/Rs matchup in the first round and Bs/Rs matchup in the second round (or given the way Habs have been playing maybe the reverse)? Old time hockey! D’you know Toe Blake?
If you were on the Burrows bandwagon get ready to jump off. Bruce Garrioch reported that Burrows is headed to Ottawa who might be giving the UFA a new contract.
Also, Ted Kulfan is reporting that Brendan Smith is talking new deal with the Wings.
Keep reading reports that it could very well be Shattenkirk has a one team list in the Rangers. If that’s the case it’s up to Gorton to dictate what gets given up for him. Like Sather should have done for St Louis.
Kings go deep in playoffs three years in a row and crap out fourth year. Rangers go deep three in a row, then crap out. Lightnings go deep three in a row, crap out.
Still about winning the cup, but you have to build a good team first, then get in, then a lot has to go your way. It’s really hard to win a cup, if you’ve been watching, and very likely the team you think will win it won’t win it.
Who will be the next Marshmallow man on the Rangers blue line. Of course he will be a great skater! Question will the Rangers ever win another cup? How long is a lifetime anyway?
Teams that win the cup have at least 1 or 2 lottery picked players on the team or at least top 5. Rangers have never had a lottery pick player or top 5. That’s why the rangers will not a win a cup. They finally won a cup in 94 because they traded for half of the Oilers team from the 80’s that still had something left in the tank or else they still wouldn’t have won a cup since 1940.

Period.

Two observations:

Shatty update:
The rental price for Shattenkirk is reportedly a first round pick, top prospect and “something else,” according to Bob McKenzie
McKenzie also noted that three teams in the past year have made deals with St. Louis for Shattenkirk pending that a contract extension could be signed
He said that Shattenkrik reportedly turned down an extension of seven-years and $6 million per season during those talks. (ouch!)

LikeLike

I would do either one, ilb.
They have the cap space to go big, or draft pick trades. I would not hesitate a second if I could get Sharpe for a 4th.

Sharp for a 4th is no-brainer. Hanzal for 1st, second, and conditional something is obscene

Keep reading reports that it could very well be Shattenkirk has a one team list in the Rangers. If that’s the case it’s up to Gorton to dictate what gets given up for him. Like Sather should have done for St Louis.

Still about winning the cup, but you have to build a good team first, then get in, then a lot has to go your way. It’s really hard to win a cup, if you’ve been watching, and very likely the team you think will win it won’t win it.
