No, but I read that article. I was going to copy and paste but didn’t want to ruin norm’s morning. And he’s right about the rangers for once. I wouldn’t want ott though (he’s gone anyhow to mtl).
This is what their roster looks like as of now: https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/rangers
They have 23 man roster with Buchnevich on AHL list, and Girardi. That has to be maintained through 3pm ET today.
They have $7,549,061 in Cap space
I wonder if there is any scenario where the rangers would do the 4 fwd 4 d expansion draft protection? The only way I even remotely see it is if they move Nash prior to the draft
Ilb
The only way I do that is IF the rangers acquire a D man of significance…say Faulk. So you protect 4 D men, and then miller, Hayes, Kreider, and z pack right?
Which part of Camper falling was most impressive? The one with nobody around him or the one when he was skating with the puck?
Seriously, kid did fine but the Miracle Met has comported himself quite nicely save for the error in the 3rd. And losing a fight is not as bad as being a wuss. Kid has some moxie. Somebody has to show a pair on this team of spineless jellyfish.
I would love E. Kane if he can keep himself from sexually assaulting anyone and thus remain on the ice and out of prison. I would also take Vrbata. We need a guy like that on our 3rd line. Would have LOVED Hanzal
I’ll be checking in later this evening off to work. Hope when I check in Nash, Stepan, & Zucc are gone. Whether they are here or not they will still make the playoffs and exit in round 1. Make the moves for next year. Do the right thing Gorton. Think about the FUTURE!
Hradek on sportsnet said thru text exchange with gorton early this morning that gorton acknowledged the rangers get physically pushed around and is working the phones to add a guy with size and grit/physicality…but must be able to skate. Sounds like the player most of us have been saying we need all season.
prior to injury Klein was playing much better, not up to last 2 seasons level but way above Oct – Jan performance.
Would play him over Holden in a heart beat if injury free. Holden is playing like hot garbage.
My prediction has been, for some time, that we overspend for Doan and/or Iginla. To be clear, overspending would be anything more than a 6th round pick.
I hurt my wrist last night fixing my freezer. It’s manly because I got hurt repairing an appliance. It’s embarrassing because it because the mechanism of injury was just pulling the door open from an awkward angle.
Realistically, the center that the Avs would want would be Zibanijad. So with that, is this enough? Zibanijad, Skjei, and one ofnthemgoalie prospects, for Duchene.
I think it would be enough, but I’m not sure I make that deal. The idea is to get a younger elite player. That trade actually makes us older. Swap Stepan for Zibanejad and I do it. I think the Avs might, too. Stepan makes their team better, plus they get the young defenseman, plus the goaltending prospect (I’d try Halverson but recognize it’s probably Shesterkin).
The only team I can see getting Duschene is the islanders. They have the assets that Sakic wants but will Snow be willing to part with those assets is the question.
I’m with Wicky. I might make some serious moves re: Avalanche. But I think the smart thing to do is sit back and grab maybe a 3rd line scoring guy, a Doan type or something. Leadership and grit that is needed for the playoffs.
I would have loved Bran Bole. Honestly. Guy is a playoff performer.
I don’t know if Olive Boyle is a playoff performer, but I do know that this is one of my top five favorite goals of all time, and we’ll have for the ages:
Here are the differences between TSN and Sportsnet, IMO:
Better for TSN:
1) Duthie blows Millard away.
2) Bob McKenzie is the best hockey man on television.
3) they get players and GMs on the phone more quickly.
4) they aren’t as Toronto-centric and don’t have Nick Kypreos pretending he was a player that mattered
5) the little sketches and songs they do are fantastic
Better for Sportsnet:
1) they have more ex players, coaches, and GMs who are funnier Han the TSN crew, except for the aforementioned Kypreos
2) seriously, they have Bryzgalov today
3) they tell more stories to fill gaps in coverage, which are often much more interesting than the actual coverage
4) Elliotte Friedman is the second best hockey man on TV.
I will be very surprised of the Rangers do anything today. The moves they need to make are the kind that are done on the offseason, like the Brassard-Zibenajad deal. They are more than one player away and don’t have assets to trade.
NYR has assets to trade if they want to be sellers; Step, Nash, Zucc, Staal (I know NTC, blah, blah, blah)
This just will not be sellers, esp with Knicks in toilet
Manny, given the cap hit for Lundqvist, yes, it seems that would have been the better choice. But no GM would ever have had the stones to make that deal, nor would he have had the blessing from ownership
Doody – “the stones to make that deal.” So, so true of most things in life that would rock the world and make one regarded as either brilliant or ignominious. Almost all choose to eschew the challenge.
Gorton is definitely working the phones hard. He’s a hard-working GM who will turn over every rock. But he doesn’t expect anything significant. That, of course, could change.
Marchand is the latest example of semi-talented toughnasties that I’ve seen over the decades who, as a result of being given a wider berth than is their due, work diligently at their game and become legitimate stars.
What’s up with Rammer lately? Step basically carried to the bench by a linesman, and Fast hunched over in dastardly pain and neither is taken to the room?
Never mind – just scrolled up and saw Eric
OV leaves feet, no call
Funny how Fast had been playing some of his best 2way hockey with Oscar.
I will forever begrudge AV for not playing the Swedish Mafia line more last year. Every time they played together, they dominated shifts.
I won’t judge Chayka until next year, at a minimum. He got a king’s ransom for Hanzal. He signed Vrbata basically to trade him at the deadline. If he can get Doan to waive his NTC, then that’s another big move for him.
TSN guys basically agree that McIlrath can’t be an NHL player. Marty Biron tried to talk him up a little bit and was just instantly shut down by the others.
I think he could still be a third pairing guy. How are guys like Sbisa and Smid still getting so much playing time when McIlrath can’t. No much difference to me between those guys.
Mark Twain bobblehead doll night in Hartford. How many Hartford fans ever heard of Samuel Clemens? For that matter, how many fans in Baltimore know the Ravens are named after Edgar Allan Poe’s bird?
Islanders reportedly shopping Ho Sang. I loved him in his draft year, still love his talent. He needs to good organization to bring him along as a pro. Tire Fires was about worst possible place outside of Coyotes for him to end up.
They need something for the fourth line. Not one team in the post season is going to play any less edgy than the Caps did last night. First time in a while I remember them not responding to a team playing physical other than Staal and Clendening
Did you see the return Hanzal got? And Sakic can’t trade Duchene, a far superior and younger player, who is locked up for another year at a reasonable cap hit? Lunacy.
What does Buch think about Hartford? Gorton says he needs ‘playing time’ intimating Buch won’t get it here at least not right now. Smith is a rental, UFA soon, and Detroit reportedly jettisoned him because his agent is a greedy bastid.
they started throwing checks after the fight. Well almost everyone save for Mr Softee 6’5″ Hazy Daze who let him man go in the zone unmarked to score a weird goal.
since we have a good amount of prorated cap space we should trade for an injured guy with expiring contract and get a draft pick. Arizona does it all the time
Alright, so there I am at Lorenzo’s – loading up my slice of the fixin’s bar.. garlic, and what-not.. and I see this guy over at the pizza boxes giving me the stink-eye. So I give hime the crook-eye back, you know.. Then, I notice that he’s not alone! I’m taking on the entire Van Buren Boys!
The Van Buren Boys? There’s a street gang named after President Martin Van Buren?
Norm
I hope you troll gorton the same way you troll people here, since gorton said the exact same thing to hradek that some here (myself included) say.
It’s a hot night. The mind races. You think about your
knife; the only friend who hasn’t betrayed you, the only friend who won’t be
dead by sun up. Sleep tight, mates, in your quilted Chambray nightshirts.
Last year there were 16 deadline trades. It was an awful day. This year, including the two overnight trades and the two minor league trades (one of which is ours) there have only been 7. So, basically, only 3 trades.
Well, I almost did once, and I blacked out. When I came to, the car was in a ditch, and the tank was full. I don’t know who did it, and I never got to thank them..
Really? I love that Montreal is making all of these trades. I hope they play every single one of those forwards. Who the hell will score their goals? Steve Ott? Martinsen? King?
when the AZZDancers miss the playoffs they will be evicted and thus will be the first Homeless NHL franchise..good thing NYC is opening 90 new shelters some of them have to be in Brooklyn..right?
I was waiting for a response last night to Wilson running everyone on the ice and on our bench including Cazz..
Gorilla Monsoon will jump off the Chase Bridge with a flying elbow and a roll full of quarters before anyone on our roster reponds

the trunk, nine thousand, nine hundred and ninety-eight bottles and cans.
We fill up with gas, we count up our cash!!…
All in would have been Shattenkirk but they went to plan B to address defense..can always take a run at Shattenkirk in summer and still have first rounder
Wick, I think (I know) Gorton’s smart enough to know his team isn’t the favorite. But it certainly is in the next level behind WAS-PIT-CHI. And pretty high among the teams in that level. Maybe first. The plan was that this year would be a reload, and he sticks with it. Good GM. They can still beat almost any team in the East in a best-of-seven, but not likely to do it in multiple series.
I’m not a fan of anyone anymore. Everyone’s overpriced, dmen aren’t asked to play D anymore, can’t make a trade without giving up 7 first rounders, no stars in the making coming down the pipe line, and now Klein, Girardi, Zibanejad, Fast and Grabner all have health concerns as the team has had all year. Probably a one and done post season and then another early off season where we can be at each other’s throats about how to fix the problem, if it can be fixed and whether Norm and Wicky are going to have it out in an octagon before Mcgregor and Mayweather finally fight. Top that cynical display, Eric
Crap The only problem I have w what you just said is that while they were for a brief time on the same level as those three teams they still weren’t good enough. Not Gortons fault by any means but nevertheless a fact. It’s a transitional time.I guess it’s just the reality we have to face.
To keep it simple C3- he’s telling us “don’t get your hopes up”..and in a way he’s kind of saying “trust me”…which I do..for now. If he finds a way to draft Timothy Liljegren or at least Callan Foote I’d be more optimistic.
I think Gorton is telling us Slats is no longer in charge…. good thing for Rangers long term…they are saying Smith has a nasty streak..hope they re right
I hope so to, also hope his knee holds up. Smith hurt it a few months ago, missed some time, came back, missed a little more time and now wheres a knee brace.
What makes me think that Gordon is effectively (along with AV) running the show is that Slats would be reluctant to ice a team totally devoid of muscle.
SN I wouldn’t call it sitting in limbo. Bringing in Zibanejad, Vesey and Buchnevich while giving Skeji the chance to learn from his mistakes and staying patient with Hayes and Miller are not moves that were going to make this the best team in the NHL but you know as well as I do it’s a hell of an improvement going forward. There was no quick fix on D and hopefully the summer will open some doors that help him to retool the blueline along with tweaking the fourth line. Plus they’re drafting in the first round since Jimmy Carter was in office : )
I don’t think they are going in the wrong direction, but I don’t think they are quite at the level of Washington, Minnesota, or a few other teams. Not top 5 at this point, but I’d say top 10. I think the real opportunity to potentially move certain players and address areas of need is after the season during drafts and free agency.
–
All that being said, I’d of had zero problem with the addition of a forward or two, for the right price, at the deadline.
–
I also think gorton has done a pretty good job to this point, this offseason will go a long way in my “opinion” of his job performance.
Wow just got home I see nothing of any significance took place. Looks like we are perfectly positioned for a 1st round exit. Good thing we didn’t add any grit!
James – referring to the trade deadline. As long as Slatapus is not involved, all is good. Added some muscle on the back end (Smith) but don’t think the 4th line put out last night is ready for prime time. Pumps and Puree are not contributors. Puree could barely stay on his skates last night.
.
Since this tam is not raising any trophies, smart not to take on any contracts to be exposed in draft.
.
If he can manage this roster during the offseason and get rid of the anchor twins on the backline, the sun will be shining brighter.
not good or accurate to lump those 2 together. but i know your biases.
regarding buyouts no way they buy both out. be happy if they do so for girardi – however lots of money in that buyout against the cap so its by no means a freebie.
and lost in all of this “excitement” the fact that Michael Kostka was traded to the Calgary Flames today! Shame on you people for not being on top of this!
I think they will buy out Girardi, but it will be a tough call, and a dead cap-space hit. So no chance they buy out Staal too. Plus I think Staal is fine on the second pair and more than fine as a third pair.
ILBSTER!! I saw your greeting and kindly returning a hello albeit tardy!
The Rangers have drafted so well for so long I had to give up any draft pics. However, doesn’t Smith possibly allow McD to have a great partner? If they are better defensively, the forwards can be that much more dangerous. I like having Smith, not losing any current forward and definitely not losing anyone like Gropp or god forbid we lose Sean Day. Day is having his best season to date. He had a distraction that made his game suffer as he admitted…something with his brother, who he was close with, going to prison for extended time. Plus he was only 16/17 at the time. NYR could have hit a jackpot there if he continues his path. Well worth the risk as he was pinned for a first rounder initially. Also, what if Ryan Graves makes the team as a third D next year. Now we are looking much better on D and offense is untouched.
LGR!!! What do i know…im just a positive petey!! 🙂
This season seems to be playing out like last season. A fast start followed by a mediocre streak and then a hot streak up to the deadline. Hopefully it ends better. At least they could be more competitive while losing a playoff series. Need to retool the D and add some toughness over the summer. Buch Vesey and Skjei will be better next year. I’m hoping they catch fire in the playoffs but my expectations are not that high.
Wolfpack again is dead last in their division. When will Gernander finally get fired? This is ridiculous, I have never seen such loyalty to a garbage coach.
Shiny new post!
