  1. No, but I read that article. I was going to copy and paste but didn’t want to ruin norm’s morning. And he’s right about the rangers for once. I wouldn’t want ott though (he’s gone anyhow to mtl).

  2. I wonder if there is any scenario where the rangers would do the 4 fwd 4 d expansion draft protection? The only way I even remotely see it is if they move Nash prior to the draft

The only way I do that is IF the rangers acquire a D man of significance…say Faulk. So you protect 4 D men, and then miller, Hayes, Kreider, and z pack right?

Seriously, kid did fine but the Miracle Met has comported himself quite nicely save for the error in the 3rd. And losing a fight is not as bad as being a wuss. Kid has some moxie. Somebody has to show a pair on this team of spineless jellyfish.

  8. Hradek on sportsnet said thru text exchange with gorton early this morning that gorton acknowledged the rangers get physically pushed around and is working the phones to add a guy with size and grit/physicality…but must be able to skate. Sounds like the player most of us have been saying we need all season.

  9. prior to injury Klein was playing much better, not up to last 2 seasons level but way above Oct – Jan performance.
Would play him over Holden in a heart beat if injury free. Holden is playing like hot garbage.

  12. I think it would be enough, but I’m not sure I make that deal. The idea is to get a younger elite player. That trade actually makes us older. Swap Stepan for Zibanejad and I do it. I think the Avs might, too. Stepan makes their team better, plus they get the young defenseman, plus the goaltending prospect (I’d try Halverson but recognize it’s probably Shesterkin).

  14. Here are the differences between TSN and Sportsnet, IMO:

    Better for TSN:
    1) Duthie blows Millard away.
    2) Bob McKenzie is the best hockey man on television.
    3) they get players and GMs on the phone more quickly.
    4) they aren’t as Toronto-centric and don’t have Nick Kypreos pretending he was a player that mattered
    5) the little sketches and songs they do are fantastic

    Better for Sportsnet:
    1) they have more ex players, coaches, and GMs who are funnier Han the TSN crew, except for the aforementioned Kypreos
    2) seriously, they have Bryzgalov today
    3) they tell more stories to fill gaps in coverage, which are often much more interesting than the actual coverage
    4) Elliotte Friedman is the second best hockey man on TV.

  15. I will be very surprised of the Rangers do anything today. The moves they need to make are the kind that are done on the offseason, like the Brassard-Zibenajad deal. They are more than one player away and don’t have assets to trade.

  16. NYR has assets to trade if they want to be sellers; Step, Nash, Zucc, Staal (I know NTC, blah, blah, blah)
This just will not be sellers, esp with Knicks in toilet

  23. TSN guys basically agree that McIlrath can’t be an NHL player. Marty Biron tried to talk him up a little bit and was just instantly shut down by the others.

I think he could still be a third pairing guy. How are guys like Sbisa and Smid still getting so much playing time when McIlrath can’t. No much difference to me between those guys.

  43. Wick, I think (I know) Gorton’s smart enough to know his team isn’t the favorite. But it certainly is in the next level behind WAS-PIT-CHI. And pretty high among the teams in that level. Maybe first. The plan was that this year would be a reload, and he sticks with it. Good GM. They can still beat almost any team in the East in a best-of-seven, but not likely to do it in multiple series.

  44. I’m not a fan of anyone anymore. Everyone’s overpriced, dmen aren’t asked to play D anymore, can’t make a trade without giving up 7 first rounders, no stars in the making coming down the pipe line, and now Klein, Girardi, Zibanejad, Fast and Grabner all have health concerns as the team has had all year. Probably a one and done post season and then another early off season where we can be at each other’s throats about how to fix the problem, if it can be fixed and whether Norm and Wicky are going to have it out in an octagon before Mcgregor and Mayweather finally fight. Top that cynical display, Eric

  45. Crap The only problem I have w what you just said is that while they were for a brief time on the same level as those three teams they still weren’t good enough. Not Gortons fault by any means but nevertheless a fact. It’s a transitional time.I guess it’s just the reality we have to face.

  48. SN I wouldn’t call it sitting in limbo. Bringing in Zibanejad, Vesey and Buchnevich while giving Skeji the chance to learn from his mistakes and staying patient with Hayes and Miller are not moves that were going to make this the best team in the NHL but you know as well as I do it’s a hell of an improvement going forward. There was no quick fix on D and hopefully the summer will open some doors that help him to retool the blueline along with tweaking the fourth line. Plus they’re drafting in the first round since Jimmy Carter was in office : )

  49. I don’t think they are going in the wrong direction, but I don’t think they are quite at the level of Washington, Minnesota, or a few other teams. Not top 5 at this point, but I’d say top 10. I think the real opportunity to potentially move certain players and address areas of need is after the season during drafts and free agency.

All that being said, I’d of had zero problem with the addition of a forward or two, for the right price, at the deadline.

I also think gorton has done a pretty good job to this point, this offseason will go a long way in my “opinion” of his job performance.

  51. James – referring to the trade deadline. As long as Slatapus is not involved, all is good. Added some muscle on the back end (Smith) but don’t think the 4th line put out last night is ready for prime time. Pumps and Puree are not contributors. Puree could barely stay on his skates last night.
    .
Since this tam is not raising any trophies, smart not to take on any contracts to be exposed in draft.
    .
If he can manage this roster during the offseason and get rid of the anchor twins on the backline, the sun will be shining brighter.

not good or accurate to lump those 2 together. but i know your biases.

regarding buyouts no way they buy both out. be happy if they do so for girardi – however lots of money in that buyout against the cap so its by no means a freebie.

  54. ILBSTER!! I saw your greeting and kindly returning a hello albeit tardy!

The Rangers have drafted so well for so long I had to give up any draft pics. However, doesn’t Smith possibly allow McD to have a great partner? If they are better defensively, the forwards can be that much more dangerous. I like having Smith, not losing any current forward and definitely not losing anyone like Gropp or god forbid we lose Sean Day. Day is having his best season to date. He had a distraction that made his game suffer as he admitted…something with his brother, who he was close with, going to prison for extended time. Plus he was only 16/17 at the time. NYR could have hit a jackpot there if he continues his path. Well worth the risk as he was pinned for a first rounder initially. Also, what if Ryan Graves makes the team as a third D next year. Now we are looking much better on D and offense is untouched.

LGR!!! What do i know…im just a positive petey!! 🙂

  55. This season seems to be playing out like last season. A fast start followed by a mediocre streak and then a hot streak up to the deadline. Hopefully it ends better. At least they could be more competitive while losing a playoff series. Need to retool the D and add some toughness over the summer. Buch Vesey and Skjei will be better next year. I’m hoping they catch fire in the playoffs but my expectations are not that high.
