    Hank stole it, alright..
    If you’re Bruce Cassidy, you’re trying to solidify your playoff spot ( not a sure thing yet), you play your best hockey for a long stretch, you dominate the game, and you run into a hot goaltender. And then you get beat by a 21 year old rookie who doesn’t speak English yet, followed by a high skill goal produced by a 4th liner. What do you say?

  5. I hate it when the Rangers dominate a game, but still lose. It’s nice to see the tables turned for a change. How the Bruins didn’t score about 3 goals in the first period was all Hank. Brendan Smith looked like he was nervous playing in his first game with his new team and it was contagious. Everybody was giving up the puck in their own zone.

    Lindberg putting on the moves in the offensive zone. Didn’t know he had it in him.

    The more I see Skjei, the more I like him. I think he’s come a long way this season.

  7. The Machine showing flashes of early last season, hope that play continues. Thought the new comer struggled at times but hard to walk into completely different system. He did push a few guys away from the crease which was nice to see. We are a banged up team right now, some on ice some off but the schedule has been favorable giving us all but one game that should be very winnable. Let’s step back from the ledge and hope for a good run.

  9. Re the schedule; the league provided a mandatory ‘rest’ period in Jan and then the ASG break in Feb (after starting late) which has condensed the game calendar to create little breathing room during the non-rest periods and placing a premium on depth and staying healthy.

    Last night some guys looked a little beat up but playing through it. JT and THE have been quiet.

    First round match up tomorrow night with the Habs new braun on display.

  10. Great, great game. You’re down four regulars, playing a pistol-hot Bruins team, and your best player wins it for you, with more than a little help from the captain, and some key contributions from Vesey, Zucc, not too many others. The Buchnevich and Lindberg goals were wonderful pieces of skill, and I can only imagine what a Bruin’s Bonehead blog might have made on Chara’s and Carlo’s pylon defending on each. Easy to see how Smith became expendable in Detroit–got undressed a couple of times, nervous on the puck as others have noted, but some good plays from him here and there, too. Good depth move.

  11. Hank had a great game. It reminded me of old times.

    I saw a lengthy post-game interview where Hank was pretty happy and relaxed. He said he ripped into the team after the first period and there was a lot of yelling in the locker room.

    Buchnevich shows some sniping ability. I am glad Gorton didnt trade him for Shattenkirk. We weren’t one defenseman away from being cup contenders. I am not one of those people who say, If we didn’t win the Stanley Cup we failed.”

  12. I live in NH & went to the game last night. Marc Staal was lost. He had no idea who was flying by him. Really makes me wonder how his “bad” eye effects his peripheral vision. JT was close to invisible, but THE was more engaged than it might have seemed on TV. McD’s college roommate just leveled Kreicji, I believe, after taking a stick in the head. Buch’s shot & Lindberg’s move were awesome! Bruins fans started heading for the exits after the 2nd goal. The rest left after Backes took out the Birthday Boy late in the 3rd & collected a well deserved goalie interference penalty!

  15. Last night Hank bailed out his teammates like they bailed him out earlier in the season. If they can ever get both things right this team can make some noise in the playoffs.

    When the Rangers come out sluggish (and that is putting it kindly) like they did last night, I would like to see the coaches push the forwards to forecheck more. Even with Pirri and Puempel in the lineup, the Rangers have enough team speed to ramp up the forecheck and still get back defensively.

    While I am on the coaching staff, why do they insist on putting our two right shooting forwards (Step and Ziba) on the same PP unit? Considering how the PP is struggling (again, putting it kindly), why not split them up so that you always have someone available for the Ovie spot – even if Step’s shot is lesser than Ziba’s.

    I know that special teams success often runs in cycles, but the Rangers PP is back to being a momentum killer within games. They really do need to review the tapes from earlier in the season.

  17. Zucc’s “hit” was Moore’s own fault, and it was stupid to see Hayes go after him for what was not only clean, but not even a “hit”. I guess the Bs follow Chara in that regard, trying to intimidate you to create a cushion around their players. It’s almost childish but I guess its the way the game has always been played when done right. In this case, it was a waste of time because Zucc can’t be intimidated. Just give him a slingshot and he’ll take your eye out.

  18. Oops, I had one more question that I just remembered. Some time last night Carp wrote that he thought Buch would go back to Hartford when Grabner is ready. He is probably right because the Rangers don’t want to keep him around and burn one of their four non-emergency recalls so soon.

    My question is could the Rangers have sent Buch down for a conditioning stint and then bring him back without triggering an “official” recall? They really didn’t need the roster spot because they could have placed Klein on Injured Reserve. Since there is no roster limit after the deadline, then the Rangers wouldn’t need to make any moves when Buch would come back from the conditioning stint or whenever Girardi and Klein were healthy.

    It was a desperate Bs team. They needed it more, and yet Hank beat them. While focusing on the negatives, you missing the biggest positive of the season. Hank stole a game. We have not seen that this year, and come playoff time, we are going to need to see it.

    I don’t agree with the “everyone” else was garbage. A lot of guys played awfully. More than two or three didn’t. And I thought the Rangers were pretty good with the lead in the third.

    Kreider was banged up vs Caps, didn’t practice the next day. I think he’s far less than 100 percent.

  31. Yeah, the players wanted a gift from the owners for making them all that money by playing in the World Cup … hence the week off. Terrible for the game. I think they will consolidate so that all teams have the same week off, or maybe one conference one week, the other the following week. Or something. The first games back are awful … except for Columbus where Torts said “We talked about not wetting ourselves coming out of the break.” LOL

  36. Vesey played well last night, as did the 4th line. The defense was mostly poor, especially the Staal-Holden pair. Skjei continues to progress nicely and looks like a keeper, and Clendening is not as bad as I feared he would be. I thought Smith was meh……….he gave the puck away a lot. Might as well keep Buchnevich up and use the 1st of 4 call ups. there is nobody else in Hartford worth calling up.

  38. I was pissed last night because I had DVRed the game, thinking it was on NBCSN (hey, that’s what the Cablevision schedule said) and instead it was 2 1/2 hours of Premier League or some such. I caught the NHL Overtime interview that Boucher had rinkside with Hank. I’d love to have been in that locker room after the first. Jones and Roenick talked about how unusual that is; that Jones remembers playing with Roy who did that and when he spoke everybody listened. Anyway, great to see Hank steal one. Smith did look tight, but what a hit on Krejci!

  40. Will need 4 or 5 games to assess Smith. One thing the Red Wings did so well was neutral zone movement and playing as a 5 man unit. Don’t see that too much here. A couple of times he looked up to a spot and nobody was there.
    Like the physical play particularly throwing down Seguin in front of the bench just before the Oscar goal after getting close-lined by Pesterneck. That kid may be good but he will be looking for a beat down if he keeps up the cheap shots.
    Chara looked and played like the Winter Warlock. On his last legs to be generous. Over 16 years ago the trade of Zdeno Chara, Bill Muckalt & 1st Round Selection (Jason Spezza) for Alexei Yashin is arguably the worse trade in NHL history. Milbury as GM was one of the best things to happen to the NYR franchise.

  42. On Marchand’s goal, Holden made about 3 or 4 bad decisions in a matter of seconds before it was in the net. Thought the captain had one of his better games in a while.
    Kreider put Pasternak in a head lock after he shoved at Smith in front of the Rangers crease after the whistle.

  46. It’s funny to hear people say that this is the first game Hank has “stolen” this year. I think there have been more than a few. Philly twice, Caps, Toronto, Dallas all come to
    mind. He was great last night, but he’s been great in a bunch of games. When he’s been bad it’s been very obvious and imo more “memorable” because it’s out of character. We definitely need to see better 60 minute games going forward because Hank can’t do what he did last night on a regular basis. I think both Stepan and Kreider are struggling with injuries. I hope Buch stays up and in top nine. LGR!

  56. It was funny to see Slapshot on the NHL Network for the movie’s 40th anniversary. It REALLY loses a lot when you to edit for broadcast television. When I used to travel/cover the Iona College hockey team Slapshot was always the first movie shown on the long bus rides 9which seemed to be every bus ride). It was the only time when everyone was watching the movie and not talking, sleeping or listening to music.

  127. Fivefinns is right on the money regarding the rangers. When opposing player bumps or in the rangers case plow into Lundqvist the rangers throw hugs and kisses. All other teams in the nhl when a opposing player breaths on there goalie they assault the guy.

  133. Tonight is as far away from a must-win game as you can get. It’s a must-not-get-injured game, for which we need help from the hockey gods. It’s too bad the Rangers can’t sub in 5-6 Hartford guys for a game or two to help ease Kreider et al through to complete recovery. I mean, it’s Saturday night in NYC, there’s other things to do besides watch the Blueshirts limp through another home game, and it would be nice for the die-hards to see some Packers in action on the big stage.

    I then chose to use stepan as a comparable to a couple of other players that everyone seems to think suck and are terrible in the post season to show that they are overrating and over valuing stepan. Doesn’t mean he’s bad (he isn’t) but he is overrated by many here.

  316. I am not certain that the Vigneault game plan of zero physical play, long stretch passes resulting in icings and unskilled defensemen is a winning playoff formula. This game looks a lot like the games look when the Rangers play Columbus and Washington. They are getting rushed and crushed with no response. If the first wildcard is preferable and you go out in round 1 anyway, you are a failure. Montreal is just as fast as the Rangers and much more physical. Refs clearly decided they weren’t calling penalties in this game…….just like the playoffs will be.

I’m sick of watching this team lose battles along the boards, get beat to pucks, not be able to complete a pass tape to tape and somehow think they’re the Harlem globetrotters on ice, and CONSTANTLY get pinned in their own zone. It’s frustrating and it’s a product of not only the system they play, but the personnel they have on the ice. So again, tell me I’m wrong…..

The worst part of all this is that eventually, in the playoffs, certain guys who should be our mainstays feel the need to push back and become more aggressive and others, just in trying to defend themselves, all end up in the cat box. Losing method. This GM should have peppered this roster with a couple few players who will make a statement, shake things up, and the take someone to the box with them.

Just because I’m a realist about how this team is currently constructed doesn’t make me a “glass half empty”…or as you would so cleverly put it “not even a drop” kind of a guy.   407. Bobbyo- see that’s the thing. I don’t think much could’ve been done at the deadline. Doan is too old, Ott is… well, he’s Ott. This needs to be addressed during the off-season. I’m fairly certain Gorton has seen enough to know they need more playable toughness.

  419. Hope so! Once they clinch, hope Kreider gets a few games off to heal up…. Despite his goal tonight, you can tell he’s fighting through an injury. I won’t discount the fact that they’re banged up and that certainly plays a role in their success, but they’re just tough to watch lately. As I said earlier, as this team is currently constructed, I just don’t think they’re built for the grind of the playoffs. We shall see….

  426. Pretty dreadful stretch for our boys. Space on the ledge may be at a premium. If they can’t right the ship during the Southern swing I will go into full panic mode. Injuries are a problem, but, they are being outplayed and outworked. Not sure there is an easy answer.

    I’ve been lamenting our lack of face off ability since preseason, but hey we have a lot of guys that can skate fast (can’t do anything else) so who cares about draws.

    This was the most embarrassing loss of the season…and it’s not even close. End of game miller is goes nose to nose with petry (I think) for a second and does drop gloves, price starts chirping him and nothing, then ott (who hits but can’t fight worth a crap) is in his sweater for the last 30 seconds of the game and nothing from one of our “tougher” players. Pride fellas, a little pride.
    –
    Every team that might face the rangers in the post season sees that hank can be run and the only policing that might or might not come is from the officials (and hey, you never know). If they do take a penalty, doesn’t really matter because they know the rangers can’t win a pp draw so they’ll just be able to clear the zone.

  437. Wick, the game ends with Ott literally chasing Miller around the ice and no one, NO ONE wearing our colors comes anywhere near. Pathetic. And I don’t blame Miller at all. Kreider and Miller don’t need to be fighting, just playing tough. A broken hand on either one of them and we’re done.

  442. There is no finer whine than Bonehead whine. This blog has become a parody of itself. Any Rangers win, they didn’t win correctly. Any Rangers loss, end of the world, Lundqvist sucks, AV should have been fired beforehand, they’re too soft (zzzz), Gorton doesn’t know what he’s doing, etc., etc. Like this team is going anywhere with Clendending, Smith, Puempel and Pirri. Seriously?

    Some see a similar pattern with last year; hot start, cold end with trouble scoring and defending save for Henk reaching back to channel his old dominant self every second or third game. Where’s Auntie?

    Pirri has played 54 of 65 games so he is part of the mix but should not be and probably won’t but who knows…
    Smith is playing first pair so he is part of the mix as well and should be unless Girardi is the savior.

    That was especially true in the defensive zone and has really been the entire year. How many times do you have to watch them take possession of the puck, look like that have a clear exit, only to see the puck carrier spin around, maybe go back and then around the net or do cross ice to another defender even further back in the zone – and then the other team has changed or come back after them and the puck never leaves our end. Its really disheartening to watch to the point I don’t even yell WTF are you doing! anymore.

    They are also not committed to the forecheck. The offense yesterday was like watching my gas stove when some of the jets are clogged… flame goes on then off back and forth at random. The stove usually fixes it self, not so sure how to fix desire and determination.

    Puempel or Pirri? Maybe Kreider because he’s hurt.

    Outside of McDonough and Smith who’s still learning the system and isn’t really a 1st pair dman, I could see any of them sitting. Probably Skjei or Clendening though.

  447. Wow. Glass, just when you thought it was safe. What a capitulation, and what a slap in the face to Jensen and Beck, both of whom can actually play a little. Still, happy for him, and for Wick and others who’ll finally get to see a Ranger punch someone in the face. I hope it works–AV obviously loves him and you hear Glass gives really good locker room. And any warm body from Hartford is a good thing at this point, as the team nurses its injuries. Mostly glad the Rangers are headed off to their home away from home: the road.
