This isn’t even about killing one or two guys because nothing is going right at the moment. The offense is at the point of hitting rock bottom.
What’s up with the Hayes line? Did he and Miller play? I don’t want to believe that Grabner is this crucial to that lines success. If he is then bring him in today before noon and give him a 5x$5 mill extension (Sarcasm) teams go through these things but man they love to make it painful against Montreal. Seems like This team more than any other has had their number for quite some time. No matter the players or coaches involved. But last night I think any of the other 28 teams in the league would have beaten them just as bad. When your best guys aren’t better than theirs you’re gonna lose. And you’re probably not scoring much. Stepan, Zucc, Hayes, Miller , kreider, pirri, zibanejad..I mean how many forwards can you have in a slump? I guess that many. And no, one goal isn’t making me give Kreider a pass. He’s been just as cold as everyone else. Woof
And I’m not even in a blind rage yet. I don’t believe the sky is falling So the usual “you’re overreacting” crew better not start with me. the “they’re gonna be fine” crap doesn’t excuse what’s happening. Fine or not I’m allowed to be disgusted after a game like this. And you should be too.
James G, I’ve been saying it for a few months now that I don’t care who the rangers play in the 1st round, it won’t matter, they will be 1 and done. It’s a replay of last year, get off to a great start, than play mediocre hockey for rest of season into the playoffs. It’s sad when you’re already looking forward to the off season because you know changes are coming. This team needs it badly. I know it’s almost impossible but they need to get Staal’s and Girardi’s contracts off the books for a starters. The whole blueline needs to be replaced except for Mcdonaugh and Skjei. Last year I stopped watching the rangers right around this time, didn’t even watch one playoff game. I feel the same thing happening again.
It wasn’t for lack of effort. The effort was there. The execution was not.
I’m not that up on the nuances of hockey, but I believe Zibanejad might have a better chance to score if he didn’t shoot everything wide.
Please just release Puemple. Please? I can’t believe they don’t have a guy in Hartford better than him.
OK, I know it’s only his second game with the team, but Smith doesn’t look all that good.
I don’t know what happened, but Hank looked awfully goofy on that third goal.
What happened to highest scoring team in the league? Isn’t that where the Rangers were at one point in the season?
That’s four straight games where they looked over matched. They were lucky to win one of them. I hope it’s just a slump and not an omen of things to come.
This is the sawwwwwwwwftest Ranger team evah! It’s amazing…they play in the toughest city in the world yet they are the softest team in the NHL. I blame AV and Gorton.
After the trade for smith I read the red wing blog and the redwing fans killed him, I posted on here about it, than I got a few negative responses on here about my post, guess redwing fans no a little more than other people.
When the Rangers are given the room to skate, they are very good. When they are hit and outworked, not so much. This is 3 straight home games against good teams that they have been abused physically with no response, which is the AV way. All 3 against teams they could face in the playoffs and all 3 resulted in disheartening losses.
it is not realistic to expect more than 1 of Staal/Girardi to be gone in off season. They have guaranteed contracts and no move as well. And even if Girardi gets bought out the savings are not that great vs the cap. Run the numbers there is a significant cap hit for 1st 3 yrs of 6 for a Girardi buyout this summer. Basically enough to replace with a $ 2 million man.
Meanwhile Nash and Stepan get a free pass. Stepan has not gotten a goal since Obama was president but all I hear is crickets. Neither one is tough either. So what are they doing FOR us.
An obvious (late) admission that this team is too soft and that management mis-read the character of this team. Of course they won’t admit it, but there it is.
I don’t think too many people here expected this team to get past the first round before the season began. We all saw how Pittsburgh slaughtered us in last years playoffs. One and done.
Tue way we are free falling, I can see us drawing Washington in the playoffs. 5th in metro.
Someone certainly tried to impress upon this group that they needed to toughen up – and it didn’t work, thus Glass. And no, he’s not the answer. It’s desperation and it’s embarrassing.
In all seriousness, this team and organization right now are very flawed and I’m not sure about the overall accountability. Zucc and Stepan have been a disgrace for well over a month. Hank has embarrassed himself at times. What the hell is up with Klein…I thought he was supposed to come back already? What’s happened to Miller and Hayes as of late? Nash? Ugh. They should trade him this summer.
You know, it’s like everyone naively believes that once you get to the playoffs, you’re golden and you can then turn it on with brilliant coaching and some line changes. As with a profligate seminarian, you don’t attain sainthood the day you are ordained You’re the same schlump dressed fancy.
Tanner Glass? Now if you are Tanner Glass, and you have been buried on the minors all year, with your Ranger contract up after the season, how much do you really want to give?
Good morning, boneheads!
Overreacting a bit?
Let them heal. Kreider is banged up, Miller isn’t a 100% either, I suspect. Who knows who else. Put them on IR, get emergency recalls. Let people heal. .500 hockey gives them 101 points. It’ll take 15-2-1 for Toronto to catch up. Same, or so, for the Islanders
That depends, BDL. Do you want another NHL contract or do you want to go play in Sweden at 30-something years old? I like the call up and I expected it. Something needed to shake the roster up a bit and after the Washington game that had some playoff grit to it I kind of said to myself they’ll need what he has brought come playoff time. Forget about dropping the gloves, they don’t have anyone that plays his style. Dish out the hits, go to the dirty areas, get it deep and forecheck. That’s his game. Yes he’s slow yes he has hands of stone and yes now you can blame everything that goes wrong on him but I like it. And it says a lot about the current state of things when I’m happy this guy was called up
ILB, I don’t think I’m overreacting at all. This is not the time of year you want to see this kind of effort or lack of execution or whatever you want to label it from your team. I’m a believer in the eye test and I just don’t like what I’m seeing right now. I didn’t like it in Boston, I wasn’t thrilled with it at times during their last win streak and right now I think something has to give. Everyone has bumps and bruises this time of year. Unless I’m missing info on one of the top 6 forwards I don’t think this is a question of injury
Tommy, I’m glad you’ve been around lately. I know what’s got to get done in the offseason and I agree on most of your points. I believe that if they fire on all cylinders they can make a nice run come post season. Right now they aren’t.
Alex, there’s no reason to think they aren’t going to go .500 or better the rest of the way. That’s just panic to think otherwise. Yeah, the schedule is tough for the month of March but they will turn this around. As I said to ILB, I’ve seen it coming for a while and all teams go through it. It’s alarming to watch but they’re not about to fall out of the post season or get overtaken by the trashlanders. cmon
Whatever you see them do from now on, Alex, Toronto will have to win 7 games more than that. They need to get healthy by playoffs. And play the hell out of Zibanejad. He needs to get going.
Carp
Just curious here…any chance the rangers buy out staal instead of Girardi?
–
Also, is it safe to assume the kampfer call up means Klein and girardi are further away than originally thought and clendening is not “in favour” currently?
I remember when we had little muscle and 40 goal scorer Steve Vickers was supposed to be our enforcer/retaliator. Eventually he realized management was doing nothing about it, leaving everything to him and he got tired of it and stopped.
Take a look at our Cup roster: McTavish, Beuk, Jay Wells, Tikkanen, Mess, K. Lowe, Larmer, Kovaliev Kypreos, Kocur. Now compare our grit, spirit, and tenacity with any of them. That tells it all.
I think the Kampfer call up says two things- 1) One or both of Klein/Girardi are not close to a return yet and 2) the coach liked what he saw from the player in that one game while not being impressed at all with the play of Smith or for that matter Staal or Holden..Again, I like the message: “if you won’t play the way you need to, other guys will do it for you”
Coos I get what you’re saying. That line up was from the NHL 25 years ago though. Again these call ups are quite telling. Did Gorton try to bring in a forward or two with some toughness and just back off because of the asking price? Does he know this is a transition year and therefore refuse to part with picks or prospects? Did they get caught with their pants down by the injuries to these guys who are hurt? and more importantly do they really feel that the return of a Girardi or Klein will improve things that much?
We all understand the “bettmanization” of the NHL has changed the game, but at its core, the game remains the same…it is a game of emotion, will, skill, and collision. The current rangers seem obsessed with 25% of that, and it just will not work.
–
The pens win one cup with a quick team (quick, not necessarily fast) and most say (including posters here) that’s how you win in this league, let’s do what the pens do.
–
News flash everyone…if you don’t have players named Crosby, malkin, or letang…you can’t do what they do. Not to mention that Crosby and letang would be the two most physical, toughest, roughest players on the ice by a mile vs the rangers.
James
I don’t think it was the asking price on “tougher” forwards for gorton (I mean look at the price paid for the 3 bottom six forwards Montreal got, it was nothing). I think there were two factors,
1) He was only going to add one forward because he is going to let this puddin’ soft roster and style of play hang itself or succeed on its own and at that point, why not just call up glass.
2) this team has already exceeded many expectations (most thought this would be a “down” season) and the plan for the retool in this off season is still a go, so why bother.
Clendening did not have a great game last night (-3) but 2 of those goals are on Henk
In recent stinko stretch since Islander Game on 2/16 with a record of 3-4 (1-4 v PO teams)
McD 1-1-2 (+2)
Shea 1-5-6 (+3)
Staal 0-1-1 (-4)
Holden 1-2-3 (-7)
Clendening 1-1-2 (-1)
.
Yup…it’s obviously Clendening’s fault
I’m going to take a lot of heat here for this, but it’s just facts so sorry everyone….
Of the current D men on the roster when everyone is healthy, the best partner for mcdonut is Klein.
–
And no one is going to talk about the elephant in the room and connect the dots? Current whipping boy clendening has one thing in common with every other d man whipping boy…skjeLitis. I get it, he’s young, skates well, gets a lot of secondary assists, but is terrible in his own zone and has his partner scrambling around out of position to cover for him.
–
It’s time for skjeL to sit. Not forever, but for a few games to see how the D solides in its own zone without him and go from there. He’s going to be a solid NHL D man, he just isn’t yet (those secondary assists aside). Didn’t we have another D man a while back that put up pretty good numbers…(del boca vista or something) how’d that work out? I’m just saying it’s a little to early to act like this guy is the second coming of anything.
Hey Wicky… to answer to your PS4 claim from last thread…. in case you didn’t know, X-sux is made by Microsoft and PC is made by Microsoft. Pretty sure there were plenty terrorist communication through a PC 😉
By the way, regarding Zibanejad, when gorton traded for him I went on the sens blog and what fans had to say about him (Zibanejad), was that he disappears for long stretches during the season, sound familiar.
Ranger fans should thank Garth Snow for being a clueless GM because if he would have fired the coach when fans and media were saying it the islanders would be right up the rangers butt right about now.
Missed the new post. Re-posting, then catching up.

Wow. Glass, just when you thought it was safe. What a capitulation, and what a slap in the face to Jensen and Beck, both of whom can actually play a little. Still, happy for him, and for Wick and others who’ll finally get to see a Ranger punch someone in the face. I hope it works–AV obviously loves him and you hear Glass gives really good locker room. And any warm body from Hartford is a good thing at this point, as the team nurses its injuries. Mostly glad the Rangers are headed off to their home away from home: the road.
March 5, 2017 at 12:10 PM
(And I don’t follow the Lighting at all, but they are up there in penalty minutes. I’ll leave it to the boxing fans to predict whom Glass will fight.)
Next item…
I laugh at everyone that thought the early season results is how this team was going to be always. A crazy start and schedule, teams not in the groove yet, players in new systems and roles around the league….come on, you guys are smarter than that (I hope). This is a one trick pony and has been all season and will be in the playoffs.
–
As soon as teams take away time and space and forecheck (playoff style) this team is done. Unless another team is willing to go all star game hockey with the rangers, that aberration at the beginning of the season rangers team will not be back.
–
That being said, I don’t think this team sucks, I’m just being realistic. This is a top 10 regular season team. This team is a playoff team, but it isn’t built for deep playoff success imo. Two of your top 6 D can’t win a wall battle (skjeL and staal), face offs have been a problem and continue to be, no one initiates physical contact, the goalies get run and the team hopes the refs will exact justice, when an emotional lift is needed, no one is willing to deliver it, it plays whistle to whistle when no other team in the league does (including last years cup winner…emulate that!!!). It has good size (except on the 4th line) overall, I think top 10 size in league, but it plays with smurf mentality.
I truly believe I was the only poster who knew that the early season success was a mirage and that the roster wasn’t built for a deep playoff run. Knew it all along, in fact. That knowledge will coat my stomach lining to protect me from the inevitable indigestion of the first round knockout that I’ve know was coming since August
I’d much rather have Girardi than Staal. Girardi’s problems are physical. He will go all -out according to his abilities. Staal, on the other hand, is a 6’4 zombie brained shuffleboarding wooden indian.
Native American, coos. If you look out your window, you’ll see the Berkeley freshman lining up with pitchforks and torches to boycott your business and draw attention to your racism
OK, just read from the top and actually laughed out loud at all the knickers-in-a-twist hyperventilation until that voice of reason, ilb, finally kicked in. Phew! And this just in: when you are down four regulars, you generally don’t do as well. And who knows who might be getting some maintenance days if those four guys were healthy.
Me, I’d sit Staal, give the guy some rest before the stretch run. And Kreider if he’s hurt, or Puempel if he’s not. Maybe a rotation. Don’t know the transaction rules, but I’d bring up as many Wolves as possible under whatever those rules are. In the meantime, I suggest Lamaze exercises for one and all.
That early-season success was the mirage that put them in a position that they can let some guys heal going into the playoffs. And the idea that the Rangers have only one way to score is a cartoonish narrative. Injuries and slumps happen, and teams don’t keep winning regardless when they do.
Sky falling her today what a shock…this team has a rash of injuries right now and Pirri / Puempel have not stepped up …and let’s give Smith more than 2 games before he’s considered a bust
Lastly, I don’t think glass is the answer. I haven’t said call him up at any point this season. This team is more than one “physical” player away from being a properly assembled roster. In today’s NHL where the cap means you need to roll 4 lines and 3 D pairs, you cannot have one dimensional players (regardless of what that one dimension is). You have to have physically willing guys in your top 6 forwards, not just your 4th line.
–
The rangers have too many players that don’t have enough “dimensions” to their game. If they aren’t doing one specific thing (for example if pirri isn’t scoring on the pp he gives the team nothing), they are not contributing anything.
–
Pirri is as much a wasted roster spot as having Colton Orr in the lineup.
–
You have to make hockey trades this offseason to address the D (very curious to see how that all shakes out because I think they need 2-3 new D men), more versatile forwards, and a centre or two that can win vital draws.
Glass is here to absorb, and deflect, some of the physical abuse that this team might be facing until the playoffs start. Kempfer is the only possible call up on defense from Hartford. Summers is another one. That’s two call ups used. I’m sure Buchnevich will eventually end up being converted to another regular call up. That’s three, one more to go.
Have you been to a home game recently and come away without satisfaction?
Has our team let you down?

For the record, I think Smith is going to be fine, maybe even more than adequate. I just think asking him to play first pair minutes, and on the wrong side, isn’t going to spell long term playoff success.

1- STOP killin Skeji for last night. I get that he’s gone through whoas this year but he played w a stomach flu last night and was down 5lbs getting IV fluids before game time. That he played speaks to the desperation of the coach.
2- the troubling side of these call ups plain and simple is that the coach is obviously concerned and perhaps doubts that the team can succeed this time of year and into the post season with their current style given injuries and illness.
3- As I said before maybe Gorton really did see this as a retool year. Consider that he didn’t trade away potential pieces of future for rental grit.
4- just to add on to my thoughts on Skeji. Maybe you see something you this season that you don’t like and I respect that. But given the current state of the defense and their contracts you should be pulling for the kid to figure it out and figure it out at the NHL level where they’re clearly giving him a chance to learn and grow no matter his mistakes. Anything else would be moving backwards. And considering some of the pieces they have up on with a hasty opinion I’d think everyone would be in support of patience
Kevin Klein will not travel with the team to Florida. He and his bad back are en route to Vegas with 2 other old friends for a childhood friends wedding…he has permission from his wife to get his mojo back…
Clearly a couple of posters just hate the fact that their perspective isn’t 100% correct, sorry fellas. It’s very simple, this team wasn’t as good as its early season success and it isn’t as bad as its recent stretch (I think the rangers have been one of the more consistent teams in the league this season…no long losing streaks, no ginormous winning steaks, fairly constant).
–
That’s some real disrespectful posting to imply that the points gained early in the year were meaningless. If that is all you gleaned from others comments (including mine), then i probably need to reevaluate the light which I view you two in. I understand we all have a difference in opinion of how the game and this team is/should be played/constructed. Engaging in discussion about differing opinion/assessment is great, usually valid points all around, and I get the annoyance with both over the top “doom and gloomers” as well as “this team is great no flaws” folks can get tiresome. I am neither of those and have not change my narrative in the least win or lose (and I’m not the only one who is that way here), so your asinine posts for no other reason than to ridicule either shows lack of ability to carry on a legit discussion or lack of desire to be respectful….either way, sad.
The 1 player I wanted the Rangers to sign last July 1 was Matt Martin..that could have kick started this team in the direction of a beefier grittier vwrsu I n of itself but ..not AV’S type of player …
James
Allow me to retort…
1) last night has nothing to do with it other than the fact is it is the same as it has been all season (haven’t changed my opinion because he hasn’t changed). You are going off the deep end a bit. You read a post about last night and take it in the context of ONE game. I have said that all season healthy or not for him. I have also said that he would be in my starting 6 on the left over staal every night and if there was a way to move staal I would be more than happy to do so to keep skjeL. He is also a rookie and not very good in his own end, which you kinda need from a D man. The issue that is odd is if you honestly look back at every D man whipping boy this season, they have been skjeL’s partner. That isn’t an agenda of mine, it’s just fact, go back and look at all the threads over the season. So STOP making this sound like a witch hunt, it’s not even close.
2) agree. The past few games probably have him re-evaluating a few things…at least you hope he is.
3) agree 100%. Keep the pieces and try and make a hockey trade or two in the off season.
4) exactly what I said in response 1)
one of the funniest moments ever for me at any NYR game was on Jan 29th 2014 at the 2nd Stadium Series Game vs The Fishsticks at Yankee Stadium…Ceelo was absolutely awful between periods and Bettman’s entertainment choice was booed off the field after lip syncing his way thru a garbage song. Only time in my life that my beer actually got colder as I drank it…
I like some of our highly paid guys despite their contracts.
I also understand the reality of the rules regarding contracts and buyouts as well as the upcoming expansion draft.
there is not 1 of the top 5 money guys that i would sign to their remaining contract today. but these deals were signed a few yrs ago
below are cap hits not actual cash
nash 1 yr $ 7.8 million (he’s the best contract only because only 1 yr left)
stepan 4 yrs $ 6.5 million per
i hope with expansion we can trade him for top 4 righty dman of comparable age
can then keep grabner on protected
staal 4 yrs $ 5.7 million per
can only buyout 1 of the d guys realistically.
girardi 3 yrs $ 5.5 million per
buyout
2.6
3.6
3.6
1.1
1.1
1.1
i’d rather get him to agree to a trade and eat 1/2 his contract to other team. or even despite wanting to keep picks trade a 2nd rd pick to sweeten the deal to other team.
if we trade stepan for a top 4 righty dman we absolutely must trade or buyout girardi because of expansion.
henrik 4 yrs $ 8.5 million per
love the player hate the contract. enough said as he’s going nowhere.
So a staal buyout saves 3.5 mil off the cap the next two seasons…I just wonder if with lefty organization depth if you wouldn’t do that buyout instead?
I’m not as big on the lefty righty thing as you are and to me and seemingly the experts staal is the better player.
I do want to trade stepan for a top 4 righty dman for better balance left/right and better balance forward vs defense. if not stepan then zibanejad to be traded. the left right balance doesn’t have to be 3-3 but 5-1 is getting too far out of balance. plenty of left dmen can switch sides and have done so throughout their playing days.
Wick- I get it. Too much back and forth about Step and Brady this weekend let’s hug it out! 🙂 ps- nice Pulp Fiction pull.
Boys, I hate to tell you, it’s not a shot at your positive attitudes but some people have to wake up a little bit. Yes, part of the problem is this team is injured. But let me name some guys not injured- Stepan who hasn’t scored in about 20 games. Miller and Hayes- who have not done jack or the other part of the phrase very often since the all star break, Nash (who may be injured) but has failed to execute even when it looks like his game is on and last but not least Mr Zuccarello who despite all his wonderful play making and invaluable shoot out abilities has not been half the player he was last season- assists be damned.- So, stay positive but let’s be real while you do it.
ILB -agreed 1000% with your 1:29pm. My only issue is that Gorton knew the role they needed filled before he traded for Smith. Therefore, much like with E. Staal last year, they are now trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Was it a move for the sake of making a move? Or is this because of the injuries to other Dmen? Regardless, what’s done is done and Smith needs to be put in a position to play to his strengths. He looks just as overwhelmed in that 1R spot as Girardi and Klein have looked previously.
took a cruise outta Tampa in January ..man that Riverwalk area around the Amalie Arena is beautiful..I can see how Boyle and Strahman followed Capt Cally down there..72 n sunny on a January day…
A lot of good points made but there is something wrong when players don’t stick up for each other, especially at the end of an embarrassing loss. If this team is going to represent the city of NY it’s time to man up and play like it. I’m saying it now this team will be utterly destroyed in the first round no matter who they play.
Wow! Glass is back now AV has something to work with. This clown show is getting funnier everyday. Glass didn’t make a difference last year so what makes management think that this year he will. I’m sure the lighting are shaking in their skates with the thought of facing the one and only Tanner Glass. This organization has lost touch with reality exclafreakingmation point.
Our little boy Dubie got his 400th point tonight, can you believe it? And he needs to shave now too!
The Glass call up isn’t about grit. Its about effort. Glass always busted his ass out there and I think that is what AV is looking for from his “leadership”
Have to agree with Carp re Staal. He looks tired and jaded and a shadow of the way he was paying the first half of the season, yet he’s still drawing the same match ups and ice time. I also think we’re finally seeing the real Nick Holden. If i were Gorton i’d be looking at trading Staal in the off-season unless he’s carrying an injury right now to explain his poor run, Smith would move into the 2nd pair LD if he can be re-signed for reasonable value. Then its a question of buying out Girardi and seeing what it’ll take for Shattenkirk to sign and can it all be done under the cap?
Good morning, boneheads!
So Larry Brooks confirming that St. Louis apparently asked for more from NY ( and Pittsburgh ) than he got from Washington in exchange for Shattenkirk. Why?
Methinks bringing up Glasser accomplishes little more than to intentionally embarrass the team, hoping the minor ignominy will put a charge of sorts into those of them who are still capable of being psychically sparked.
Interesting quotes from George McPhee recently about Vegas trading with other teams soon. Expect to see Vegas gain a few draft picks for “future considerations”, which translates as bribes to stay away from a particular unprotected player in the expansion draft.
Two of the coaches responsibilities is to prepare and motivate his players. If he needs to bring up and over the hill AHL tough guy to do that he shouldn’t be coaching.
….Licking their chops to draw the Canadians in the first round…yep. uh huh..

I do want to trade stepan for a top 4 righty dman for better balance left/right and better balance forward vs defense. if not stepan then zibanejad to be traded. the left right balance doesn’t have to be 3-3 but 5-1 is getting too far out of balance. plenty of left dmen can switch sides and have done so throughout their playing days.

That we play better on the road tells me that most of these guys should divorce their wives and just hang out with their diverse girl friends.

Then its a question of buying out Girardi and seeing what it’ll take for Shattenkirk to sign and can it all be done under the cap?
my 7 D for next year would be:
McD Shatty
Smith Klein
Skjei Clendenning
Graves

Gerund #4 is a verb trying desperately to function as a noun and accomplishing neither.
