Citi Field Likely Destination of 2018 Winter Classic…Rangers vs. Baby Buffalo?

Greetings everyone, James G here. Thought this was new post worthy on a quiet hockey day (plus I haven’t had time to contribute anything but the usual daily drivel)

Newday reported this earlier and the talk – at least for now- is that it’s likely to be a Rangers- Sabres matchup. Start saving your money…or explaining to your kids that they’ll have to attend a 2 year college.

  1. Yeah Buffalo? Wtf? Why not the Isles? Great rivalry and would make for a great classic…no… Buttman has his own plan. Dyckhead.

  2. It is the 10th anniversary of the first Winter Classic game – hence the Sabres who hosted the Penguins. Islanders-Rangers not enough of a draw for the NHL’s marquee outdoor game. Not sure Buffalo is either, but Jack Eichel angle and 10th anniversary will be played to the hilt.

Even the spinmeisters at the NHL couldn’t find a way to spin any other team as the “home team” at Citi Field (e.g. L.A., Chicago, Boston etc.). The Rangers can’t host because of the no-tax agreement between the Garden and the City.

I would bet the NHL would want to go back to Yankee Stadium, but the Pinstripe Bowl prevents the league from doing it because the NHL wouldn’t have enough time to get the rink set up.

Look at the bright side, it is almost a sure win for the Rangers because they are the “road team” 🙂

  4. Carp,
It’s not about Fast being in the lineup, it’s where Fast is in the lineup. In practice today, he skated with the leading goal scorer, and the teams best center. If Fast is top 9, and Glass is in the lineup, turn out the lights. This is the first time this season I have felt discouraged about this team. I thought they were past the Fast and Glass crap, but here we are again.

  5. So will the NHL be promoting this as the North vs the South? Or East vs West… NY? Think Craps or LA Kings would have made for better ratings.

  6. Waiting for Carp to post on RR2.0 that RR1.0 is back? As much as it will be good to see his articles i’m still against the Facebook linking thing..

  7. And I kind of doubt MSG will let us be idiots anonymously on their respectable site, but who knows maybe I am wrong!

    Waiting on word from Carp.

  10. Carp keeping us in suspense….

I don’t agree with Uncle Larry very often, but I have to agree with his assessment that benching Buchnevich is crazy. Let him gain the experience. We already know what Glass can do and it’s not much.

  11. I keep reading about how Glass “brings some physicality to the team and yadda, yadda, yadda.” Great, but how is he at playing hockey?

  12. Glass is leading the team in pts/60 so there is that. Bigger issue is Fast playing top 9. He and Oscar had some legit chemistry prior to injury. Unless AV is purposely trying to suppress offense in order to tank…

  13. Oh, sorry, meant to explain last night but some crap came up … all I meant was that I have regained ownership, courtesy of my friends at Lohud, of the old Rangers Report twitter account, which has like 10 times more followers. That’s all. No new blog, no new job, but some new hair (in the photo). still freelancing for MSGN twice a week.

When I, ahem, left lohud I was immediately locked out of Rangers Report twitter account since they owned it. Standard operating procedure. I asked them recently, since they’re not using it, if I could have it back. They agreed.

  14. Slats/Gorton/AV/Team – Reasons Glass is here. You’re smarter than all of them put together? Submit your QV to ownership, sell the ’96 Dodge Dart and prepare to move to a SoHo penthouse.

  15. Good morning, boneheads!
Enjoyed your story on Adam Graves. Not too many human beings like him on this earth, unfortunately. I remember very well how he was absolutely destroyed by the death of one of his premature sons, and his father being diagnosed with terminal cancer at the same time, and yet he remained humble and giving.

  16. Heads explode again with Glass/Buch move (how many times can those same heads explode?) Why is it a shock that the coach of a professional team is not inclined to keep a rookie in the lineup as the playoffs near? Doesn’t matter the sport, it takes an exceptional rookie (or huge contract) to make the coach comfortable not playing a vet.

And is this even a long term decision? AV has pointedly said lineups are going to be dependent upon opponents and he will probably also give others a night or two off as the season winds down. Buch will get his time on ice and hopefully he has a bit more motivation to convince the coach he can be trusted to play the “right way” all the time. Don’t forget all the whining about what he did with JT in December. Worked out ok for all involved.

  17. You have to give it the right Wellesian inflection, to wit:

    The Shadow knows.

  18. With all of the walking wounded returning, or returning shortly, AV should use the next 8-10 games to get some players a little rest – especially with the plethora of back-to-back games to end the season. I wouldn’t call it going into the tank, but maybe I would call it the Rangers version of Dean Smith’s old four-corner offense – kind of like a stall. Hey, does he have a couple of brothers playing in the NHL? 🙂

  20. Fast:3/Glass:4 vs. Buchnevich:3/Fast:4. I’d go with the latter, but it’s no dunk shot. The issue, I think, is more about managing Buch (and Vesey’s) career. Glass’s career needs no management. He’s had a good run, and perhaps he can keep catching some games for someone in the next couple of years. But if you’re going to keep Buch (whom I’ve just noticed is Ethan Hawke’s doppelganger) you’d better play him. Same with Vesey. If neither guy is getting it done when the playoffs begin, that’s the time to pop Glass in–you know what you’ll get. But these [meaningless] games are the perfect stretch to see if Hawke and Sunday Morning can develop a little game in the D-zone. The idea that the good parts of Glass’ game will somehow spread like a disease seems like a stretch.

  21. Trap hockey should be banned from the face of the earth forever. All coaches preaching trap hockey shot in the face and then fed to the pigs.
