Rangers win despite a roster chock o’ block with whipping boys. And without Glass’s grit or whatever his magic potion is.

Defensive zone coverage was so much better early in this season.
The odd man rushes are bad.
The snow angels have gone on for too long. Surely, the coaches have to realize that they almost never work.
The sloppy PK is a problem.
The (uncontested) shots from the front of the net are maddening! Pick up the man in front!

To be fair, this was the 2nd of a back-to-back and they got in late last night. Plus, Minnesota is a good team. But the team D has to be better and if Raanta wasn’t so sharp, this could have gotten ugly.

The good news is we’ve seen them slack off defensively, (the ugly Dallas loss and a few others around then). Lundqvist was slumping as well. In the weeks that followed, they clamped down and got it together.

They won because AV broke up the Grabner-Hayes-Miller line when Jesper Fast came back because Jesper is such a complete stud. What awesome coaching.

The Rangers won the hockey game, but they didn’t win it satisfactorily, their players stink, other than Raanta, who’s better than Lundqvist, and AV doesn’t know what he’s doing. One and done. 3 out of 4 points in a back-to-back, and it’s somehow a bad thing. La, la, la, la, la!!

Aside from scoring the two goals, I thought Zucc was really good against Florida. Last night he was more good than bad, but still did the Zucc things like holding onto the puck to long, and freelancing in his own zone. He seems to have better legs too.

Oscar will be the next Franz Nielsen. I’d rather lose Grabner or Auntie than Oscar at this point.

AA,
I agree, but that won’t happen with the Rangers. He will be a 4th line center who does not kill penalties, or play more than 10 minutes a game, as long as he is a Ranger.

Good morning all! Two blackouts in a row … What the HARTNELL am I paying for???

Blackouts? I have Directv with the Center Ice Package. I haven’t seen a blackout on Center Ice.
How do you figure that they beat a good team on the road on the second game of back-to-backs after losing to the middling Panthers at home? It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
While some think Zucc holds onto the puck too long others may say that he is patient with the puck.
Maybe Fast’s defensive game is more of what the team needs on the fourth line instead of Glass’ grit.
I don’t know if Raanta is better than Lundqvist, but he sure is a lot better stickhandling and passing the puck.

It’s easy to play hard against good teams–you skate because you have no choice. Not as easy when you’re up against mediocrity, where you have to impose your will. Great teams go hard regardless, even when they’re up 4-1 in the third. Very good teams like this year’s Rangers often play to the level of the competition. In their defense, they’ve had their playoff ticket punched for months, run into a bunch of simultaneous injuries, and played OK during this stretch of meaningless games. Ten to go, though, time to ramp it up pretty soon.

Yup, Sioux. That’s what it was. A great game last night. Real hockey played by two elite teams. With speed, skill, and tactical decisions. You can dissect it any way you want, and point to the mistakes made by both teams. But it was a great hockey game. Sometimes we don’t appreciate what we have. And the kids are alright. Vesey, Buchnevich, Lindberg, Skjei. Good job, Gorton!

Ever thought the first goal they gave up wasn’t technically a PP goal it was three guys chasing the puck in the corner and leaving Stahl alone in front. We saw this all that year and it has reappeared. Someone has to protect the front of the net. And someone has to be able to count to five. Without the two many men penalties Auntie has a shutout. Looks like they overpaid for Smith – especially as a rental. Gorton does better over the Summer than at the deadline. They will have 9 D when everyone gets healthy unless Gorton knows something about Klein that we don’t. It would be nice to win a couple at home. They are headed toward a 500 record there.

On the Staal goal, Hanzal was holding M Staal’s stick after interfering with another Ranger heading toward puck in corner. Fine line between a penalty and smart play.
.
While Aunite is playing very well, the guy who needs to stay in the Goalie Whisperer, Beniot Allaire; might be the most important coach on the team….

McDonagh chased far too much on both goals, IMO.
And I didn’t think the Rangers played anything close to their A game. Still have very little to actually play for.
Still the third best team in the East, one of the five or so best in the whole damn league. Still can beat any team in the NHL in a best-of-seven, though not likely to beat the two best in the East in back-to-back series.
and still, to some, only the losses matter.

Just glad I am not the one shelling out the big bucks for the good views at MSG to watch their play at home.
THAT is one facet of this team that needs to change in April.

The Rangers need to completely tank a couple of seasons so they can get a Crosby-like player. The only downside would be reading fan sites about how terrible they are.

Hey Carp, I think your influence is rubbing off other newspaper reporters.
In Larry Brooks column today…
” I am not sure when sliding in front of the net became good defensive technique, but Nick Holden, who been struggling for almost two months to find the form he displayed the first half the season, now seems to leave his feet as a default mechanism. And there Saturday night was Brendan Smith adopting the same approach, albeit succeeding in knocking the puck off Nino Niederreiter’s stick to foil a two-on-one midway through the second period. This is most likely not the way assistant coach Jeff Beukeboom is drawing it up.”

After last night’s results it looks like they’re playing Montreal. It will take almost a miracle for that to change. So perhaps it’s time fr AV to work on his lines accordingly.
Also, do we need a new post?

Forget about the Rangers tanking to get placed in the Atlantic Division playoffs. The Rangers need to tank and petition the NHL to be placed in the Western Conference playoffs (20-5-0). The only Western Conference team with 20 wins against the Eastern Conference is San Jose (20-7-4).
