I don’t know if he’s better than Smith, but he’s a solid guy to have on the depth charts. Better overall game than Clendening. Maybe he’s a late bloomer and just figuring it out.

I still don’t see why all the negative talk about Zucc. He was one of the better forwards on the team last night. I don’t see him as one of the reasons they’re not winning.
You guys really like Kemper? He and Clendenning both stink. I thought he was responsible for the first islander goal because he just couldn’t keep up with or check his man properly. These guys are borderline minor leaguers who are stop gaps at best. And I really think playing with Skeij is hurting Skeij because he can’t defend and Skeij can’t play the breakout game.
But that’s the least of our worries. Something needs to be done about our PK which cost us this game
Just a sad thought by the time Gorton rebuilds this defense to contender status McDonagh will be spent. Depressing. I thought the curse ended in 94? Losing to the isles is worse than root canal!

I have had a night to sleep on it and will try being Mr. Sunshine today. You can argue that they had the better of the play in the last two games and lost because of goalposts, broken sticks and outstanding goaltending. However it should also be noted that the PK now looks like the Knicks playing defense. Everyone watches the puck, doesn’t move their feet and are surprised when the opponent gets uncontested shots. Also they are missing one or two wide open nets a game in addition to giving up at leas one PP goal a game. If these issues persist into the playoffs it will be difficult to be competitive. That’s about as positive as I can get at the moment.

Agree re opie. That’s how it always is with opie. He gets a pass from most here routinely. I really hope they move him in a hockey trade this offseason.
I wouldn’t mind Grabner back with Hayes-Miller, because he gave them room to play. But if Buchnevich, Vesey can find top-9 games at the same time, I’m fine with Grabner on the fourth.
I stepan gets treated like this amazing player here when he isn’t. He’s a decent defencive forward with better than average offencive instincts and hockey IQ. He’s also terrible at crucial draws, not very fleet of foot, and has no physicality to his game. He hasn’t centred the “top” line on the rangers since the short season and is a 2C ceiling in the NHL.
If you believe that Lindberg is a third line center ( im not there yet), then trading Stepan becomes easier to do in that you would not need a center in return.
C’mon Carp you have been around us Rangers fans long enough to know that when we don’t like Player A, he stinks and can’t do anything right (unless he scores the game-winning goal in a Game 7 and even then someone will still complain). When we like Player B, then he can’t do anything wrong (even if he scores into his own net to cost the Rangers a Game 7 and even then someone will still blame Player A even though he was on the bench). 🙂
I read that the Sharks are slumping. Well help is on the way. Got two weeks to get the PK straightened out and get Hank in a groove. Tough schedule the rest of the way. It will be an achievement to get 100 points now.
fivefinns, you’ll appreciate this. I had an MRI last week and when it was done and I was getting dressed, I stuck my head out the door and hollered “My wallet’s gone, my wallet’s gone!”
The technician cracked up.
My wife didn’t know what the hell was going on.
I’m one of those guys who likes to look at a very minor signing like this and go total Alex Jones on the implications. Anyway, Halverson getting traded this summer to LAK. More going that way. Paul Ladue heading our way. You heard it here first.
This is what I have to sunk to in retirement. .I’m at Panera’s at 230 in the suburbs..watching a melennial couple make out…I’m used to be a productive member of society
More on Chris Nell. He was a 2016 Mike Richter Award nominee and was one of 20 goalies on the 2017 Richter Award Watch List. I saw Nell listed as the number three undrafted free agent list on one 2016 list (last season).
Skjei will remain in the line up even with his rookie D mistakes. This is not the start of the season when five goals came easy every night. We are lucky to get two now and you can’t punt on one of two D that has shown consistent ability to be involved offensively. And though the outcomes are not always what we want, the complete collapses have stopped and the D, in general, has been more physical. I won’t be surprised at all to see AV rotating G/Klein and maybe Holden throughout the playoffs. Kamfu probably gets the short end but never know, could see time too.
Don’t see the hate on Grabner either.. the guy slows down from a torrid pace after injury and its kick him to the curb. I would rather see that 3rd line put back together, even if Nash has manged to break a long drought with JT out there. If we can’t get KZB line back then maybe KZN?
I think Haley has played in probably 40 or 50 of the sharks games, I’m guessing it’s for his physicality (no, I don’t mean fighting) and willingingness (yes, I mean fighting). I don’t think he’s great on draws…low to mid 40s on winning % I think.
Check out that Sara Bernhardt display by Holtby in the 1st minute of OT. I’ve been noticing goalies getting away with that physics defying flip of the helmet for a few years now. To some degree most are guilty, some more than others. Maybe that’s the reason the NHL sits just behind the Extreme Cageboxing league of New Zealand in popularity.
I am quite sure Montreal is not afraid of the Rangers, or vice versa. But you guys (not you particularly) think the Rangers have no shot against Emelin and Yemelin and all those other traffic cones.
True Carp. But, at least around here there’s some pure old time love of the game. I’m not as sharp as I used to be, but I couldn’t help but think, that I’ve seen way too much of Holtby’s mug over the last whatever years. And I don’t watch many interviews. LOL.
And Thanks for the MSGNetworks articles. I always get a nugget of knowledge or perspective.
The only team that the Rangers should be worried about in the playoffs is … the Rangers. Let’s face, they are their own worst enemies. We always talk about lucky/unlucky bounces. Well, as Branch Rickey used to say, “luck is the residue of design”. You work hard shift-in and shift-out, good things will happen. You don’t, and the breaks go against you.
If the Rangers are on their game 9and that is a big IF), there isn’t a team in the NHL they can’t or won’t beat in a seven game series – especially if the Rangers have road ice advantage.
exactly right, Anthony. If they play the way they can/should they are the best team in the Atlantic bracket. If they play the way they’ve played in so many games recently — refusing to forecheck, snow-angels galore, putrid special teams — they’ll be one and done. It’s up to them if they go to the ECF or not. After the second round, though, I think they’d be distinct underdogs.
Carp with the Rangers speed it amazes me that this team does not forecheck more aggressively than they do. I wonder if AV calls off the dogs because he doesn’t have any confidence in them to get back defensively once the forecheck is beaten?
I would like to see them be more aggressive killing penalties, especially by having their forwards stop dropping off to clog the shooting lanes. I would like to see the forwards pressure the points a bit more and that also goes for their 5-on-5 coverage as well.
I hold out a sliver of hope that the return of Girardi and Klein help the PK because it gives the team the option of using all six d-men on the PK and not just four since AV is loathe to use Skjei and KampClen.
BDl – Not necessarily, but if he does sit then AV can/will use all six d-men to kill penalties. If Skjei plays, then at least he can rotate five.
Carp – I have no problem with the Rangers playing more dump and chase especially when teams are going to clog the neutral zone. The Rangers speed should be able to pressure the d-men if they dump and chase. The problem is one that my friends used to refer to back in the day as “dump and don’t chase”.
I’d love to see the Rangers use that speed to gamble on the PK late in a game they are losing. Since most teams use that neutral zone drop pass I am just waiting for the say some speedy forward reads that play and jumps the drop pass for a shorthanded breakaway.
Of course, the Rangers forwards would either hit the logo or shoot wide 😦
I think it would be awesome if Girardi won the Steven McDonald award for his body of work, especially since he’s somehow never won it and especially since this might be it for him. VOTE!
Whine, whine, whine. There is massive carping on this blog, and none of it deserved. Look, this team has one of the easiest paths to the Finals. It has two well paid superstars, a capable defense that this year was rated one of the best, and they picked up a good defenseman at the trade deadline. It has (not #1) but great goal-tending, a very successful coach and has been a perennial winner and Cup contender for the past 5 years or more. They are going to whip through the Conference in the playoffs and make it to the finals again. I have every confidence in this team to go all the way to the Cup this year, and none of you can say otherwise. Now get out there and s’port the team!
Just last weekend I was driving my Ford Galaxy through the Milky Way, down from Valhalla, on Utopia Boulevard, mooning other drivers while headed for Mercury Vac Repairs where I wanted them to take a look at my Eureka which blows but won’t suck.
Good for Cyndy for playing that way, wish the whistle to whistle crew had some nastiness.
AV’s Marquees of Queensbury BS is for the figure skating crowd. Playoff Time baby! Old Time Hockey!!
These final games, I predict, will be more of the same, up until the last two or three perhaps. It will take some games for Lundqvist to get sharp, and psychologically there’s not much point in the Rangers throwing themselves hell-bent when there’s nothing on the line. Different for Buchnevich, Glass (P&P if they get thrown one last bone, which I don’t see) Smith, Klein, perhaps Holden, who are all trying to earn playoff time. Otherwise it’s a question of how many games do they want to practice going all out for 60.
I suspect we will see the Rangers perform well the next two nights. I suspect the third game will be almost impossible. I thought, other than special teams, they played two strong, physical games the last two, FWIW.
I also suspect the Islanders will get killed by the Penguins tonight, their usual post-Game 7 letdown.
Sn – It is funny that you posed the picture of the Hanson Brothers. I could not help but laugh every time they showed the Wild bench and you got to see the two guys dressed as the Hanson Brothers every time they showed Bruce Boudreau. I don’t remember hearing the announcers make the obvious point that Boudreau “starred” in Slap Shot. Okay Boudreau starred in Slap Shot much like Anson Carter was an NHL “star” – Bruce was in Slap Shot and Anson was in the NHL.
I watched the end of the LA- WIN game last night. LA just took over at the end. I was thinking oh no, LA is finally looking good, they think they still have a chance. Saturday will be rough.
The Rangers are going to have to play some sixty minute games in the playoffs. I don’t believe they can. I watched the Caps and the BJs last night. The energy I saw was amazing. There was a confidence in their skating and a crispness in both teams play that is lacking with the Rangers. The Rangers can probably play like that for maybe 10 minutes but then they’re done. I don’t think they can keep up that kind of pace for long and I think they’re going to have to to be successful.
I guess we’ll have to watch the games and see if they can play the full 60 (plus OT if necessary). I hope they prove Eddie wrong. FWIW, I think they can and will.
Thought the energy was pretty good vs. the Islanders. Some posts, bad bounces and now, because they didn’t play a full 60,(or even close), for several home games prior to that, the ledge is filling up. No one to blame but themselves for that part. However, their ticket is practically punched for the 1st wildcard and the season is too long.
Thus, we’ll see some better efforts so we get off their backs, but the full 60 (plus OT) will start in the playoffs.
The price he paid for Smith has me thinking Slats may not have been totally responsible for all the stinker trades. I need a maintenance day so I am off to Boston to see my new granddaughter. Hope I get a pleasant surprise when I check the score Sunday morning.
Ooh-Baby!- I really hope you’re right. I just feel that once you get in a bad habit, it’s harder to get rid of it than to never have started it in the first place. Not playing a full sixty is this team’s bad habit. We’ll see, but I’m telling you it’s going to bite them in the behind. They’re not going to be able to turn it on for as long as they want to when they have to. I know I’m being a negative Nell (see extremely large cartoon above), but I do hereby promise to happily come on here and eat crow if I’m wrong.
BDL, I understand you’re not a fan of Skjei, but his role is clear and there’s no clear replacement among in the Holden, Klein, Smith trio. Not sure how you play a guy every night of the season and suddenly sit him. Anything’s possible, I suppose, but this seems like your pet theory and yours alone.
Eddie-I get it. They’ve played so many games where they took lots of shifts and periods (plural) off.
I might be the one eating crow in a few weeks. I just think there are enough Rangers who’ve been in tough playoff series that they’ll turn it on. Last year was bad, but that team wasn’t as fast or as deep. The Penguins were way out of their league.
I have zero problem with the Crosby slash. This is what the NHL is today with the stupid rules it has. That is the only way Crosby can protect himself in today’s NHL. Kudos to Crosby for giving it as good as he gets it (guy gets hacked and whacked all the time). Patrick O’Sullivan on Toronto radio today nailed it!
Norm,
I am a Skjei fan. I have watched AV coach for 4 seasons now, he is very predictable. If you notice, the D pairings I suggested yesterday, I nailed. The only difference is Skjei with Smith. I had Klein with Smith. And I still think it’s going to end up Klein with Smith.
Some clown on twitter spending all day challenging me about Girardi not deserving the Masterton nomination because, though he embodies sportsmanship, he does not embody perseverance or dedication. Holy crap.
Ohh, well, I’m not really a professional anymore 🙂 and I didn’t do line combos, just reported the line combos. 🙂

On an RDS note… most habs fans seem to want the rangers match up and think it’s a pretty decent match up for them (lol, they keep bringing up Kreider vs Price).
Danny probably won’t win, but he gets my vote out of respect for what he gave to the Rangers franchise over his career. Great ranger, great role model.
Meanwhile FishTanks are up 3-2 versus pittsburgh. I hate the tanks, and just wish they would go away. If they make playoffs (and I guarantee they will), they will be summarily destroyed by Wash/Pitt, but all we’ll hear about is what a miracle they performed to get in, how great a captain tavares is, how amazing Ho Sang Can U See is, Anders Lee, Halal is back…. Blah blah blah
hey boneheads.. hows life on the ledge? Fear not the Rangers will give youse a seven game nailbiter, bank on it. Less not forget how many playoff series this team has played in recently. Lot of players still here. They lost to the eventual cup champs last year and had they pulled out game 3, it might have been a seven game series.
You know what would make the Rangers a better team? Replacing its roster full of lousy players with players now on other teams. All of whom we’d like for a New York minute and then want the originals back. Familiarity breeds contempt among Boneheads better than just about anywhere.
I woke up this morning see what my fellow ranger fans had to say. When I got to the part where olga said the rangers are going to the cup finals and CCCP said to get off the shrooms, I laughed so hard I almost fell off the chair.
by the way, with that defense the rangers have there not going anywhere in the payoffs and I do ‘t understand what people are watching if they think smith is good. I admit Skjei is at the top of the list of a turnover machine but smith isn’t to far behind. The red wing fans I read on the red wing blog are spot on, smith turns the puck over in his own zone and makes some dumb passes like skjei, not as bad as skjei but he isn’t anything special either. Except for Mcdonaugh that whole rangers defense needs a overhaul. Than you have the forwards who still pas, pass, pass and when they do have a golden opportunity to score they either shoot it in the goalies bread basket or miss the net completely.

He’s also terrible at crucial draws, not very fleet of foot, and has no physicality to his game. He hasn’t centred the “top” line on the rangers since the short season and is a 2C ceiling in the NHL.

When Klein comes back? I thought Holden was better last night, but he could come out.
Skjei has been all over the place,(atrocious at times), and I could see him missing a game or two, but the goal has to be to get him back out there.
There will be more injuries, so if they get past round 1, all of these guys could get used.

These final games, I predict, will be more of the same, up until the last two or three perhaps. It will take some games for Lundqvist to get sharp, and psychologically there’s not much point in the Rangers throwing themselves hell-bent when there’s nothing on the line. Different for Buchnevich, Glass (P&P if they get thrown one last bone, which I don’t see) Smith, Klein, perhaps Holden, who are all trying to earn playoff time. Otherwise it’s a question of how many games do they want to practice going all out for 60.
