Say, I’ve an idea, Beav. In preparation for the playoffs, let’s each one of us extol the virtues of our favorite Ranger. I’ll begin. Hard to decide, mind you–I like ’em all, even the talent-free Tanner, who’s like a tick, will not go away, keeps chewing… But I digress. For me, this year, it’s Jesper. Also light on talent, but will not stop skating and executes my favorite hockey maneuvre better than any other Ranger: takes a hit to make a play. Does the little things well, can fill in on any line. One criticism, though: he needs to see Henrik about his hair. “No flow” doesn’t begin to describe the crisis.
It’s too bad the NHL doesn’t do the fantasy hockey thing where you can just drop your players and pick up guys that didn’t make the playoffs. Drop Zucc/Add Kucherov, Drop Stepan/add Kopitar, Drop Smith/Add Doughty. Doodie would be in his glory!
Thanks Ohh. I mean it’s not like I’m thrilled with everything top to bottom with this team like some blind optimist but it’s not like Montreal is flawless.
It’s the lack of solid play at home that bothers me more than anything right now. Step one in my mind is split the first two games in Montreal (huge in the case of our team)
If the guys who are supposed to be the top guys don’t perform then maybe a few are just punching their ticket out of NY which is fine by me.
Absolutely Norm. Don’t misinterpret my point of view. If the guys that haven’t contributed often enough pull the same old performance out of their butts as they have all season/last post season then yes it’ll suck to watch but ultimately it may lead to the organization making the decision to severe ties which is a plus.
As for a favorite player? I think something inside of me broke when the buzzer sounded in game 7 against the Lightning. I’ve reached a point where I don’t really care about individuals as long as everyone is pulling their weight and can help win a championship while I’m still on this earth.
I just want to be clear here, it’s ok to criticize other posters and fans, but not ok to be a fan and have an opinion on the team/players you root for?!
–
Mmmmkay, got it.
Ilb
I think the habs D is what it is, they’ll have the best D man of both teams but the rangers D corps is better over all than theirs. Theirs is slower and switches vowels more than the rangers D. In the regular season the d advantage I would give to the rangers, in a post season series (where time and space become a premium)…its even imho.
–
To sum it up, I don’t think it’s an X factor
The problems I see, not just from my own evaluations, but those evaluations of other posters here from the blog father on down, about this series is a lot of IFs when it comes to the rangers. IF hank plays like years past hank, IF top players play like top players, IF the coach can keep the team from being “slowed” down, IF the team can get some of the intangibles etc etc etc.
–
It just seems like a considerable amount of “hopeful” speculation (which is absolutely fine btw), instead of certain confidence.
Wicky,
I have certain confidence. The Rangers are going to make short work of the Habs. The Rangers are deeper up front and on the back line. And though we don’t like how they got there, the Rangers are the rested team.
Habs are better on the ice at the most important position, not so much anywhere else. Big-time coach upgrade for them as well, should be a good series.
Bdl
I think there most certainly are. From what I’m hearing…admittingly from just RDS, they are concerned about the vowel (makes the way some refer to Girardi here seem very very tame), can they score enough, and whether or not kreider will try to drop a piano on price from the rafters.
–
I think this series is an absolute pick em in 6 or 7 games either way.
–
Like every other ranger fan, I’d love to see the rangers sweep it in 4.
Agree with, BDL. NY has more depth. Both upfront and on defense.
Also this, if Montreal decides to spend their time concentrating on Kreider and his “relationship” with Price, it’ll be a short series.
Kreider has had a really good season, but I still think he has it in him to be a great player if can drive that corner to the net more often. Montreal certainly doesn’t want him doing it, but neither does any other team.
I think it’s a tossup, and I agree, Wickster, there are a lot of ifs. But there’s also the “if” that these Rangers have a ton of playoff experience and have shown a lot of postseason onions over the years (indeed, they were pretty good and very physically invested until the third period of Game 3 last season, tied in the series 1-1). I think that’s an intangible as important as most positional edges in this series.
Plus Montreal’s D really sucks. 🙂
Cerny put me on the spot during a podcast the other day, and since I think it is a tossup, I hemmed and hawed “Rangers in 7 … but I wouldn’t put a nickel on it.” So I’ll stick with that. But if the Rangers don’t clean up the front of their net and the PK, and if Shampoo Boy isn’t vintage Lundqvist, it could be over early, IMO.
I think the series with Montreal is a toss-up and whoever wins will depend on special teams. That’s my guess.
Favorite player? I don’t know about a favorite player, but I do admire Rick Nash for changing his game to benefit the team at the expense of personal statistics. There isn’t a forward on the team with his offensive instincts combined with defensive play.
I have more than one player that I root a little harder for. Stepan, Kreider, Miller, McD, and Skjei are all guys that i root for do well. I can see both Buchnevich, and Vesey eventually falling into that category as well.
Norm I am always hoping that Kreider will turn into the beast we all believe he can be. I think his stats would be far better with a RW who could put the puck in the net. Having said that my guy is the Zucc pound for pound he has more guts than anyone else on the team. And since I top out at 5’4″ I favor the Hobbit! Howeve I will admit there are times when I want to throw the remote at the TV for his back passes to nobody!
You have to give it Zucc too for improving his defensive play this year. You can still see it’s far from natural for him.
I’ll ask everyone this while raising only one “if”.
What if both teams play to their full potential in all positions, who wins?
Norm- I’ll say Skjei. Kid’s only a rookie and clearly is a work in progress. Has to iron out parts of his (defensive) game, but defensemen generally take longer to develop.
If we are then discounting coaching and basing it on 1-6 D, 1-12 F, and both goalies…playing to the top of their ability (speculating them Nash is playing to his ability of a 40+ goal scorer etc) I say rangers in 6 or 7 games.
–
If we include coaching ability and adjustments in game…I go mtl in 6 or 7
ILB, very rarely does that happen. I think it’s a couple of key players that need to play up to their potential and if that happens the Rangers should win the series. Again that’s a pretty big IF.
BDL I know that’s probably the lineup we’ll see but I just don’t like that Stepan line. And I’m not so sure Vesey should be stuck on that 4th line with his style of play and two 4th liners on the third line
Good evening all and happy final game of regular season night! If Center Ice says goodnight before shirts off you’re gonna hear me across the bonehead land…..LGR!!!!
not a good choice? really! do you watch the games? seems like every goal they score he is either assisting or digging it out of the corner winning th 50 50 battles when few othersdo
Bdl, of course I’m cheating and using the good old internet but I still can’t figure it out! 😉 Have found 5 eventual rangers from the 79 blues and red wings. But can’t find which players played that game.
This part of the Masters has irritated me for years. Cut to commercial/highlights, etc. while Willett puts the jacket on Garcia (with the eventual photo to prove it) and then inside for the TV re-enactment, with no acknowledgement that it’s already happened. What a donkey drill.
ForeGlide is Norm’s (it was Norm right? If not my apologies) tm for our forecheck …. France is the new equivalent to leaving the gate open, if I’m again correct
Must win last regular game! If Rangers wouldn’t be able to win this game against JV Pissies team, they have no business in PO, no matter what ValeyCaT says, whose analyses become more and more incoherent and uncomprehend.
Olli Maata has a very punchable face..i don’t know there’s just something about your face and if you don’t do something about I’m going to have to POW!!!
Now that we are in season two, here are three reasons I am not optimistic against Montreal:
1) Will need traffic in front to beat Price – Rangers do very little of that.
2) Special teams will be important – Rangers PP and PK mediocre at best
3) Fancy boy passing, especially at home
Had friends over for dinner (back in the states, woo-o-ot! U-S-A, etc.) so missed the third, but some outstanding regular-season gibberish to review, thanks! Now it’s on to Montreal and let’s gibberish there.
Loving the new coos creation: the Delightful Opportunity. Need an analog for the Penalty Kill. I offer up The Rehabilitation (“with that dumbass Kreider infraction, the Rangers are now In Rehabilitation”, “the first Parole Board is hitting the ice”, etc.) in hopes of inspiring a much better idea.

Must win last regular game! If Rangers wouldn’t be able to win this game against JV Pissies team, they have no business in PO, no matter what ValeyCaT says, whose analyses become more and more incoherent and uncomprehend.

Now that we are in season two, here are three reasons I am not optimistic against Montreal:
1) Will need traffic in front to beat Price – Rangers do very little of that.
2) Special teams will be important – Rangers PP and PK mediocre at best
3) Fancy boy passing, especially at home
