Rangers-Canadiens in Review

Rangers 2, Canadiens 0.
Rangers lead series 1-0.

Look! A full review! I’m using at least three quarters of my ass today.

  1. I don’t want to waste any time getting right to the biggest story in terms of potential impact on the series: Henrik Lundqvist was phenomenal. It was vintage Lundqvist, who now is 2-0 with a 0.00 GAA and 1.000 sv % in his last two playoff games against Montreal. The save he made on Weber in the second period was incredible. The “if” for him now is if he can keep playing like he did last night. If he does continue to play this way, we not only have a good chance to win the series, but we have a good chance to make it to the Cup Final.
  2. Henrik Lundqvist was the biggest story of the night, but only slightly less impactful was Tanner Glass. E3, surely in jest, predicted at 6:48 PM that Glass would score the first goal of the night. If he had tried to place a bet on that in Vegas they probably would have turned him away because it wouldn’t have been fair to accept it.  Even still, he scored, on a great backhand. It was the kind of goal that reminds you that even the worst NHL players are still amazing at hockey.  Even Price’s reaction to the shot told you that he did not think for a second that the shot Glass took was even in the realm of possibility.
  3. Glass was impactful even without the goal. He skated and competed hard. He was in on the forecheck, he was in front of the net, he was fighting on the wall, he was average defensively (a huge improvement from his normal liability status).  The fourth line, in general, was excellent, as it has been over the past two weeks. I thought Lindberg was particularly effective and unlucky not to score.
  4. The defense came through in spades. I actually thought that, surprisingly, McDonagh was one of the least effective defensemen throughout the game, especially in the offensive zone and on the powerplay, where he struggled mightily. Girardi had a huge game. He was physical, he was positioned well, and he made smart and simple plays with the puck. Staal used his size well in brushing off forechecks by some of the smaller Montreal forwards to create time and space for himself. Holden had a solid game. Skjei continues to be our best puck mover. Even Brendan Smith came on strong in the second half of the game after a rough start and another penalty (albeit, it looked like a phantom high stick to me).
  5. The top 9 forwards, on the other hand, were disappointing, especially in their finishing. The Kreider-Stepan-Zuccarello line was completely neutralized. The only time I even noticed Zuccarello on the ice was when he was getting into scrums around our net. The battle of two shrimps between him and Gallagher is definitely entertaining, though, Zuccarello should not let himself get distracted by that pest. The other two top lines didn’t fare much better, but I should note that Vesey-Zibanejad-Nash did generate a lot of scoring chances but the finishing was poor (missed the net, right into Price, you know, the usual Rangers shooting targets).
  6. So let’s see, Lundqvist was better than Price, our defense was really good, Glass was our best forward, and our forwards as a whole were worse than Montreal. Yup, totally nailed it in my preview. Honestly, in the universe of potential outcomes for this game 1-0 (or 2-0 with the ENG) was one of the outcomes that I expected the least.
  7. Now let’s look at the game itself. Hockey is one of the few sports where you can have a 1-0 game (2-0 with the ENG) be an entertaining game.  This wasn’t the best 1-0 game I’ve ever seen (that honor would go to a Rangers-Devils game that was actually 0-0 and the Devils won in a shootout), but it’s up there. It had its ebbs and flows, changes in momentum, it had violent physicality, unlikely heroes, and perhaps most importantly for us, a Rangers win.
  8. The first period was an acceptable road period. Montreal dominated possession, but the Rangers managed to severely limit quality scoring chances. In fact, aside from a chance for Pacioretty and a powerplay opportunity for Shaw that went just wide (I think that was in the first), Montreal had nothing to really show for its high shot total of 14.  The first powerplay had a good opportunity for Zuccarello (I think) on the weak side, but he had a hard time teeing up the shot and when he finally got off a backhand, Price gobbled it up.
  9. There was a moment when Kreider was alone, chasing a loose puck down the ice towards Price who had come out to play it by the hash marks. Kreider made an early and wide loop around Price to avoid even the possibility of contact, but in doing so he also avoided the possibility of intercepting Price’s pass. If they didn’t have a history together, I imagine Kreider would have been a lot more aggressive in pursuing that puck.  He needs to play like he doesn’t care about the perception of his play being overly aggressive with respect to goaltender contact.
  10. That was the positive for the first period. The negative was that the Rangers were pinned in their zone for much of the period.  Their defensemen were not doing a good job moving the puck from behind the net, forcing the forwards to come deep into the zone, thereby limiting their ability to have a clean zone exit.
  11. With the words and bubble gum snaps of AV still ringing in their ears, the Rangers came out in the second period like gangbusters, totally dominating the first ten minutes. They did this by eliminating the Montreal breakout. We had completely clogged up the neutral zone and Montreal couldn’t get the puck into our zone. It was incredible to watch.
  12. Then there was a string of penalties which sapped all of the Rangers’ momentum. Initially, I should note that the penalty kill performed adequately.  There were some scrambles in front that were dangerous, especially the one chance by Shaw that just missed wide, and Weber’s back door shot that was awesomely saved by Lundqvist, but overall, we shut them down.
  13. The power play was a tire fire, especially the 5 on 3. A group of statues making meaningless passes around the perimeter, and then McDonagh committing the absolute worst sin you can commit on a 5 on 3: He shot it wide to the far side and the puck goes all the way down the ice. Forget that he even missed. That shot was such a poor selection. The Rangers’ remaining power plays went equally poorly.
  14. After the penalties, Montreal reasserted itself. The Rangers had 9 of the first 10 shots of the 2nd period, but were outshot 8-4 over the rest of the period, including the ten bell save on Weber (which I think was in the second and may have been on the PP).
  15. We again looked good to start the third, but as the game started to reach its end, we starting to fall back into a defensive shell to hang on for the 1-0 win. I typically don’t like this approach because you are just inviting pressure, but given how we had only given up one odd man rush all game(3 on 2), I would have liked to have seen us try and control the puck a bit more to help limit the pressure on our defense and Lundqvist.  It ended up working out, but that’s just a philosophical difference.
  16. We actually won a lot of faceoffs, including against Steve Ott, who is one of the best in the game. And the ones we didn’t win, we fought hard to keep the Canadiens from having clean possession. The empty net goal by Grabner was an example of that, as Fast took what should have been a clean possession for Montreal (after a wish pass from Radulov), chipped it out to a speeding Michael Grabner who scored on the empty net after Radulov blocked his centering feed (and almost blocked the goal, too). Also, how about Hayes being the guy AV trusted to be out there at the end of the game.  He’s come a long way from last year’s debacle.
  17. I had to watch the first 10 minutes of the game on NBCSN’s app because I was on my way home. I’m torn over which network to watch the game on. To me, a Rangers game isn’t a Rangers game unless Sam is calling it, but given how he’s been slipping a bit in his old age, especially in the eye sight department, and how insufferable Joe is, I’m leaning a bit towards NBCSN for game 2. Gord Miller is an average Canadian play-by-play guy, which makes him better than most American ones. And Ray Ferraro is an absolute delight for color commentary. Both intermissions are insufferable aside from Steve Valliquette’s analysis, which has improved in leaps and bounds since he first started.
  18. Going forward into game 2 on Friday, there were a lot of positive things to build off of, but there are still some glaring problems. We still only scored 1 goal on Price. Our “1st” line was completely neutralized. The PP was brutal. We had trouble at times with our breakouts and with possession.
  19. As Carp would say, expect it to be 1-1 after 2, 2-2 after 4, and probably 3-3 after 6. Also, expect to hear a lot about how the Rangers stole home ice.
  20. Last night’s post set the RR2 record by almost 100 and the 2nd place post was up for almost a full 24 hours leading into the trade deadline. You guys are the best.

  1. Rangers pitch a shutout with strong team defense and a couple of big stops, so, yeah, time to rejigger the lines? I think the writing was on the wall early on when Glass won a footrace to cancel out an icing. Glass. Keep that boy away from the drug screeners.

  3. after my good dream last night and after I woke up I went back to sleep and oddly enough had a nightmare.
It concerned a 5 on 3 advantage for my rangers and Stephan wouldn’t shoot and Afghanistan Bananastan wouldn’t shoot and finally when our Capt. did shoot it went out onto the streets of Montreal…then the Princess from Mario Bros tapped my head again and told me that Only The Wizard Can Fix Your Power Play my dear….

  4. Doodied on. repost: It’s all fine and good that Glass was one of the heros last night but some of the stuff I saw from the forwards was concerning. Grabner had that awful pass or clearing attempt that nearly wound up in the back of the net and Stepan was guilty of a similar gaffe. I think early in the third(?) he was behind his net looking for a break out, saw Montreal pressuring and instead of trying to find some space and taking a hit to get the puck out he tries to shoot it up the boards and it stays in the zone. Then you had Zucc all night looking for the extra pass, the fancy pass – any kind of pass. Needs to stop. He’s smarter than that. this is the post season now so wake up when it comes to that stuff.

I think Kreider and Miller need to be taken off their respective lines and put together – being wasted a bit

  5. Nice review! My only big disagreement is with respect to Holden. I thought he was a liability all game long. Loved seeing Glass and Girardi with big games. And LOL that the blog chose Tanner over Hank as the game’s 1st star!

  6. I thought McD was very good. I thought the forwards were very good. Did not finish. But there were stretches when they came at the Habs in waves. And felt Holden really struggled, and Smith was very good. I guess I really didn’t disagree with to much of what you said.

  7. BDL, It seemed like McDonagh’s man had a lot of good scoring opportunities. And his play on the PP spoke (stunk?) for itself.

While the top 9 came at them in waves at times, it was much like Montreal’s possession in the 1st period, with little scoring opportunity other than 26-93-61, which was plagued by poor finishing. the 4th line also had those problems, as Lindberg was unlucky not to score on more than one occasion, especially when Price turned it over.

You aren’t the only one who said Holden struggled. To be honest, I didn’t notice him much which I took as a good thing.

I agree that Smith was good. I just said he had a slow start. Basically, once he took the penalty, he was a lot better.

  8. By far the most aggravating thing about the 5-3 and pp in general was the complete failure to park anyone in front of the net. I thought the compete level of the top 3 lines when in the O zone lacking for most of the game, Nash’s perhaps the best of those. There were times when they clearly could have battled for the puck on the back boards and instead immediately exited the zone. Perhaps that was by decree from the coaches but then the instructions to the 4th line were comletely different. I also really do not like the dump and change, would rather one guy carry it in as far as he can and then go off if he loses possession. The dump in is just too much of a concession to me.

Even with a few screw ups by Holden, I don’t think you want to make changes yet, keep Klein on deck. And we should not critique a win too harshly. Far from perfect but it was playoff hockey against the winner of the other division who, contrary to our desires, are not going to just sit their and watch.

  9. Great Road victory with Henk earning some of his bloated salary. He was much more adept at handling the puck as the Habs seemed to pass it to him in the hope of a flubbed pass.
    .
This team will win most of the 5×5 plays but the special teams are starting to cause worry. The PP is a Del Zaster with guys who won’t shoot and no QB. Nothing new here…
    .
4th line created the most chances because they….wait for it…. forechecked!! Ding, Ding, Ding!! No new math here. Throw it in and go get it.

  10. Good morning, boneheads!
    Nicely done, Doodie!
I wonder if Price is more focused if Buchnevich has that puck on his stick instead of Glass. Well, he’ll sure pay more attention to Glass next time.
Doodie, your …ahem… job description requires you to analyze this game. Or even over analyze. I wouldn’t. I disagree on a couple of things, including forwards and Holden. But it doesn’t matter. The big picture is that they withstood the Montreal pressure early, dealt with their own nervousness, and, at least for one game, answered a lot of important ifs.
Price, by the way, played very well. This game could’ve been over by the middle of second period if it wasn’t for him.
Now Therein has to adjust. Because he knows he’s playing against strong defense, better centers, and deeper team. And he might be playing against the King.

E3 -go play the lottery Brother! Who’s getting the 1st goal tomorrow night?

Julian’s no dummy. He’s figuring out what flaws he can find or different looks he can thow at the Rangers as we speak.

As over simplified as it sounds, getting the 1st goal in these games is going to be HUGE.

Favorite comment: Forgot who said that Girardi and Staal traveled to MTL in a time-machine. LMFAO

4th line was awesome! Will need different guys to step up different nights. Good news: although the Rangers will need to be better tomorrow night, they CAN be. McDonough, Kreider, Hayes, etc.

    Please no 1-1 after 2!

  15. BDL I thought Nash ‘s line was good as was the fourth line but Stepan and Hayes lines were shut down pretty effectively. In general the offense did come in waves and were taking point blank shots from the circles most of the second. I think they have two pretty physical players with good instincts around the net in Kreider and Miller and neither are at their best with their current linemates. This series won’t be won by playing around the parimeter.
For that reason I juggle things up front. Maybe try to get those guys out at the same time and let them grind a bit

  16. Wow, complaining about the forwards?

I thought that while Holden had the two atrocious turnovers, he was strong on the wall and in front of the net. And I don’t believe AV will make a change. His partner was very good, as was his buyout twin 🙂

If McDonagh doesn’t fire that 5-on-3 shot into Quebec City maybe they get one there. They were set up, even held the puck so that Miller could go from the box to the bench and get Kreider on the ice and parked in front. The PP’s been pretty darn good for several weeks, and that’s a good PK … I don’t think it’s time to panic about that yet.

    But you guys, well …

  17. I think both Weber and Subban played well this year but the Habs obviously miss Subban’s puck handling threat. It made them a different team and even harder to defend than they already are.

  18. Carp since when are you a “well they won so everything is all fine and good”? They could have just as easily lost that game 1-0 as they won it. That’s not bleeding pessimism on my part. It’s just an observation- 2 of the 4 lines didn’t seem to be as effective as they could have been.

  20. I thought all 4 lines were good, and 5 of the 6 D. Zibanijad was shakey early but calmed down. Carp is right, Holden did play tough in corners and in front of the net, but his puck handling was poor.

  26. If the Canadiens think they could just as easily have won that game as lost it, I’m a happy guy. They had one, count ’em, ONE Grade-A chance, Weber’s, and Hank got him. And they got nothing done in the third–plenty of time in the o-zone right where the Rangers wanted them, along the boards. They’re going to have to lift their game considerably in Game Two, which I imagine they will. The Rangers have not been much, during this great multi-season playoff run, for adding on to series leads. Which is why they’ve played more playoff games than anyone over that stretch.

  27. bobby, not possible to protect him without exposing someone like Stepan or Zuccarello, which there is no way that they would do.

Nash-Zibanejad-Stepan-Zuccarello-Kreider-Hayes-Miller. Those are our protected forwards, guaranteed. Nash is the only one that will not be by choice.

  28. Carp, over the recent string of playoff success (2012 on), we have precisely two series wins in less than 7 games (MTL in 6, 2014; Pit in 5, 2015), despite having won 9 series in that time. That’s a high ratio of 7 game wins. All of our losses during that time frame have been less (NJ-6, Bos-5, LA-5, Mtl-6, Pit-5).

  29. bobby, first, if you move Stepan for a player, you would likely have to protect the player you acquired. Second, even if they didn’t have to protect that player, I think they would try to protect one of Fast or Grabner instead.

  30. Weird that Lindberg got an assist. I thought it was pretty clear he lost the faceoff and the goal was made possible by a strong effort from Glass to retrieve the puck.

    Like

  31. whether he gets an assist or not, it goes down as a won faceoff since NYR recovered it. At least, theoretically. The button-pushers up there were hitting the shot-attempt and shot buttons pretty hard. Rangers coaches, who keep their own tabs, had Habs for four scoring chances in the first period.

  61. Kampfer is happy he doesn’t have to wait until September to find out if he has a job next season-and the season after. That’s why he spilled the beans. It’s a two way contract with no cap hit if he is Hartford. No impact on Ranger planning.
It’s only one game but if Girardi has a good playoff season it complicates the buyout discussion after the season. Unless they buy him out there in no way thy can even think about pursuing Shattenkirk. Of course all that happens after they win the Cup. I’m in full optimist mode – at least until tonight. LGR
