Rangers at Canadiens…It’s Go Time!

Game 2, Eastern Conference Quarter Finals

Rangers lead series 1-0

Rangers at Canadiens -7:00 PM MSG, USA, 98.7 FM. Online streaming is available on nbcsportss.com or the NBC Sports app.

After leaving victorious on Wednesday night, the Rangers return to the Bell Centre for game 2 of the first round. The forwards will have to do a better job scoring on Carey Price or else we will have to rely on Big Game Glass to carry the offense. And we still need to see if Lundqvist is back or whether he just gave his final vintage performance.

Thank you to E3 for putting up a clean slate while I was at the children’s museum with the family. Clearly, this is a HAV.

Tonight’s probable lineup for the Rangers, via Steve Zipay (@stevezipay):

Chris Kreider-Derek Stepan-Mats Zuccarello

Jimmy Vesey-Mika Zibanejad-Rick Nash

Michael Grabner-Kevin Hayes-JT Miller

Tanner Glass-Oscar Lindberg-Jesper Fast

DEFENSE

Ryan McDonagh-Dan Girardi

Marc Staal-Nick Holden

Brady Skjei-Brendan Smith

The big news of course is that Kevin Klein and Pavel Buchnevich remain healthy scratches in favor of trade-deadline acquisition Brendan Smith and game 1 hero Tanner Glass, respectively. Smith started slowly but finished strongly. Glass, well, there isn’t much more that can be said about him from game 1. Let’s hope the rest of the team plays more like him. Did I really just say that? Henrik Lundqvist obviously gets the start. Here’s hoping he can maintain his vintage form.

No changes for the Canadiens. They will try again to be the first Canadian team to win a playoff game in nearly two years, as this year’s teams went 0-5 in game 1. One thing to pay attention to are the defensive matchups. Weber had almost a 75% 5 on 5 corsi, while the Beaulieu-Nesterov pairing had only a 35.1%.

The Rangers are something like 2-13 since 2012 when they have a chance to take a two game series lead, so I fully expect this to come back to MSG at 1-1, as would Carp, who would also expect 2-2 and probably 3-3.

I just hope tonight’s game is as entertaining as Wednesday night’s. The teams were credited with almost 100 combined hits, which is almost like Matt Martin being tracked by the Islanders. I saw somewhere that his hit total dropped by almost 100 this year. Color me unsurprised.

  3. I have been saying it all season that Holden is mediocre and that he just got hot for a little while. Everyone else thought he was the steal of the century.

Sister, I said that about Kreider in my game 1 review. Not nearly aggressive enough.

    EVrock, 4th line?

    E3, mr. Clutch his stick.

  4. Man, you add up all the lousy players on the Rangers roster, listed here, and it’s amazing they’re even in this series. Boneheads pushing panic buttons is one of my favorite things! Like warm woolen mittens.

  5. Joe M: “Great defensive play by Girardi!” Gimme a break. He’s out of position, which presumably makes his desperation swipe a “great defensive play.”

  6. Btw, the penalties and the scrum happened because of classic incompetent NHL officiating. They don’t call anything all game and then when the players realize that and start policing themselves, refs have to call a bunch of penalties to try and regain control.

  7. Not to be negy but I thought there was a bit too much trying to weave through Montreal dmen to get to the net instead of trying to get it deep and retrieving it

  10. If that’s will continue, we will need much more timeouts. Besides, I’m sure refs will find a way to make some call before that’s over.

  11. They played not to lose rather than playing to win. Just sat back and let Habs keep coming at them. Zero pressure in has zone. Why Holden would be on the ice in last two minutes is beyond anyones comprehension. Have little faith they will find a way to win in OT and make no mistake this is a “must Win for them considering how poorly they play at home.

  12. Olga nailed it.

These Blueshirts established about zero forecheck during the third period.

Montreal played the entire period on its toes as a result.

  13. That’s what happens when you try to play the third like a 20 min PK. Nick Holden doesn’t belong on the ice for the rest of the post season. Idc if Klein is healthy or not

  14. Well… Carp called it. 1-1 after 1. 2-0 would’ve been too easy…. and honestly, they deserve to lose this game to this crappy team. Other than Miller/Fast/Glass… the ForeGlide is strong tonight….

  15. So there’s a bunch of narratives you can tell: would be hard for us to turn it on after just defending for 10 minutes, Montreal will suffer emotional let down after tying game, etc.

Bottom line: next goal is huge in this series.

  25. Terrible. No way to sugarcoat it… again, top guys like Kreider, Steps, Haze, Zika and even Miller (tho he’s playing physical) are COMPLETELY ineffective!

  26. Montreal had about 15 to 20 less hits than the Rangers.

Montreal with guys like Orr, Shaw, WWEber are built a little “tougher” than the rangers. The Rangers are simply not built to deliver 70 or more hits in a 4 period game. Emotionally and physically they were drained.

Also, the fact that it was Montreal who tied the game with seconds left gave them an emotional rush, if not physical via adrenaline.

  31. Too many passengers on this team. Stephan, ZBad and Hayes are hugh disappointments and have brought little to the table this season. It’s highly unlikely that they are just going to turn it on in playoffs and have done very little so far. It’s also time to explore what they can get for Kreider as their are way too many games where he is a no show. He is a waste of great talent.

  34. Rangers had them reeling late in the 2nd. Took their feet off the gas pedal in the 3rd. Looked kind of stunned for the start and much of the OT.

So much attention given to Hank’s stick on the first goal, but Petry Dish had 5, (FIVE!), seconds to decide what to do. Can NOT give and NHL player that much time and space.

  37. Just finished watching the DVR replay what a bummer really thought they would finally win and go 2-0 in the series. But this is the NYR nothing is ever easy for this organization. If they win our nerves are short, if they lose it’s the same result! I can’t buy they were out of gas, either play every game to win or expect to lose. Nite boys I feel your pain!

I worry about both of their backs. Not sure which forward would come out

Kamfer for Holden? I highly doubt AV would do that.

Kreider, Hayes, Step and Zibanijad need to be better, but obviously none of them is coming out unless they’re hurt.

  42. AV stood pat with his lineup for game two. You know that Montreal would have made adjustments based on game one. So a good coach would have figured out how to adjust to the other teams adjustments. Or show them something else in game two. Instead, the Rangers fell back and defended most of the 3rd period. It almost worked. but not quite. The Rangers looked bad starting OT, but they eventually got some good chances and either team could have won it. The Rangers didn’t.

  43. Yes. And somebody tell Hank to hold on to his stick and to stop trying to play the puck which he never does intelligently. He’s too dumb to run anything or to be a boss. He is an underling, well paid, but little more, and the sooner he realizes that, the better he and we all will be.

  48. Carp, I’ve got a serious question for you. How do they go from playing a really solid, structured, confident defensive game to whatever that was tonight? Is it really only because Montreal was “desperate”? I don’t get how they could go so off the rails…

  49. Not much advantage to winning game 3 or 4, as long as we win at least one of them. Is it better to go ahead and be caught, or to fall behind and ketchup, having momentum going back to Montreal?

    Like

  50. And don’t give me the “momentum” lecture. There is an advantage to winning the last game played. It’s just not an “overwhelming” advantage. There are other factors that can overcome that. Doesn’t mean that it’s not there…

  51. E3, BGG let you down tonight. (but he did have 10 hits).

Sittoo, I honestly don’t think it was the “defensive” game that broke down. It was their unwillingness to play in the offensive zone. They kept looking — as they have done a lot this year — for scoring chances off the rush, and they got a few, but had no interest in chipping pucks behind a terrible Montreal defense and going to work. Too bad, because they sure did it in Game 1, and they sure did it the first two periods tonight.

Look for my Game Review on MSGNetworks.com Saturday. Probably not in the morning, though.

  52. Just finished the dvr’d game. I thought the rangers played well for a period and a half, then stopped going to the front of the net, then went into the prevent D, then AV decided to put the worst d pair (staal/Holden) on the ice at the end of the game. Bad choice by the coach but it’s still anyone’s game. I thought mtl was the better team in OT but we still had a shot….all z pack had to do was win a battle.

    I thought hank was great.

I voted smiff, shampoo boy, and bgg…in no particular order

  53. Carp nails it, as usual.

Rangers were more than adequate defensively, save for some personal breakdowns. HOLDEN comes to mind.

But the refusal to play in the offensive zone, to turn around the montreal defenders is what bit the Rangers in the butt. You can’t throw 70 or 80 hits in a game, while absorbing another 65, and play on your heels nursing a one goal lead for 25 minutes.

It’s a tough tough loss, but they deserve it and hopefully will learn from it.

  54. Good morning, boneheads!
What happened last night is a playoffs hockey. Montreal did what they had to do, otherwise this series would be pretty much over.
The Rangers showed again that they can play this type of hockey- physical, tight, defensive style. A lot of ifs have been answered, including goaltending, defensive structure and its specific players, and team’s physicality. Now they have to add what brought them here in the first place-skill and speed. I like their chances. LGR.
