  1. Guess noting happens until Splats has everyone to LaQuinta. There they will probably all get bonuses and an option grant for bringing James Dolan 6 home playoff games. After all, THAT is the crucial issue for this club. Profits over cups, and Bettman guaranteed the profit part with the salary cap and multiple lockouts.

  2. Carp, just read your piece, it’s good, but an issue with the expansion stuff: The MSG video says Lindberg is not eligible and you do not list him among those likely to be selected by Vegas. However he most certainly IS eligible for the expansion draft and depending on how Vegas approaches the draft, he could be one of the more attractive options on our team.

  3. I’ll take your word for it RR2. I do remember being a little disappointed with Gropp in the pre season. I thought he looked a little slow. What do you know of Poink? I have seen him mentioned having a chance to make the team next year. Is that realistic?

  4. I saw him a little bit, but I don’t have an eye for judging players in the college game because of how different it is from the NHL, whereas major junior is very similar, but sloppier. That being said, I’ve read some sources that suggest he could be ready to contribute in a 3rd pairing role as early as next year, and I’ve read others that suggest he’s Matt Gilroy.

  8. bit premature to claim Gropp to be a bust — speed and size useful at a minimum and he was projected as power winger….not many of those around

  9. Bobby, I’m not claiming definitively that he is, and if it reads that way, it’s a mistake on my end. I think he will be, but as you correctly point out, it’s way too early.

Also, you have to remember what was spent in order to pick him in that spot. They really stuck their neck out for him, so if he doesn’t produce, it will be weighed more heavily than if they had just taken him with their own 2nd round pick.

  10. I find the most telling fact about this team and the type of players they have is when “on paper” they are the better team but lose.

Tells me the “non measurable” things aka intangibles are seriously lacking in this group.

Will still trumps (no, not him) skill in 2017.

  11. Again, you have to address the centre position.
Duchene would be my first choice, RNH my second.

No way I leave lindberg unprotected. I expose a winger (fast or grabner) before a centre.

I also do not send miller for trouba. I want trouba the most as far as D men go (not to mention his contract fits nicely if a vet D man is bought out and Nash is still here).

I think this team also needs a 4th line centre that is good on draws with some skill…Nate Thompson type.

I’d consider sending buch in a deal as a seeetner for trouba or duchene. Also wouldn’t object to skjeL in a deal for a top line centre.

  12. Lindberg is the 4th center. Obviously would prefer Duchene to RNH. RNH does intrigue me though. Maybe he finds his game here like Brassard did. Don’t think trading Skjei makes sense. There are no untouchables, but it would take something really good for me to trade Buchnevich.

  13. Said it this time last year- Skjei is not the kind of player you move. Agree no one is untouchable but he’s your best young dman right now and makes less than a million a year. Need more guys like him.

  14. Would you trade this year’s first rounder plus Chris Kreider to get Duchene? Maybe force Sakic to take Marc Staal’s contract by taking back someone else he wants to move that’s going to be on an expiring deal?

  15. I don’t know what Trouba’s situation is since the drama ended and he resigned. I know Anaheim is still going to have to work things out win or lose this year and may want to move Vatanen or Manson instead of losing one in the expansion draft. Both righty. Both better than the Cody Fransons of the world…

  21. Well I’ll make it even tougher BDL. If you’re like me and don’t consider Shattenkirk an option, there really isn’t an a viable ufa option this year. 22. Rangers have Graves and Gilmour in the system they re-signed Kampfer and brought in I think two young blue liners in the last two months? It’s all fine and good but again none of that equates to a top pairing right handed D man that can play permanently along side our captain. I do the Trouba deal or a similar one without question 10 out of 10

  30. People get fixed in points. I’m as big a Stepan fan as you will find. He was awful in the playoffs. I don’t care how many points he had, or if it was his normal point production for the playoffs, he was not good.

  31. was the worst post season showing of Stepans career. Point totals aside he’s been a reliable “intangible guy” as Wicky would say. Has had some timely goals in the past. But I don’t expect Crazy offensive production from him in the playoffs. I don’t expect 30 goals and 30 power play points from him in the regular season either. I know what he is at this point. But if he’s not going to make smart decisions on the defensive side of the puck and he isn’t going to make any good decisions with it (especially on the pp) and he’s not improving his face off % anytime soon..now we have a problem.

  32. I think Stepan still has some trade value. I can’t help but question whether he’s done enough in the off seasons to maximize his potential and continue to get better, stonger, faster, etc.

I think the motivation to impress a new coach, teammates and fan base, as well as a different system, might jump start him. Not saying he’s a true 1C. Only that he may not have peeked.

Hopefully other GM’s around the league feel the same way. That said, I’m all for trying to move him for something that makes the Rangers better before his NMC kicks in.

Needless to say when I (often) ended up on the wrong side of the ‘fairway’ I had to walk a quarter mile to the ball and back carrying four clubs. Not only that, it was so plush/wet you got no roll at all on drives, they just plopped. I lost interest pretty quick.

“Great season! Had a gimme playoff schedule, playing teams that rangers were better than. But when the chips were high, our Junk Goalie may also have been high.”

If they wanna win it all, they put in Randaa. If they did, we’d still be watching hockey. I tried a lot this year. I went balls to the wall in to being a fan! And they screwed me. Not as bad as the Knicks. But, let’s be honest, they’re not the Knicks. Nobody watches hockey around here for some reason. Maybe if the dumb coach spoke English instead of that dumb accent that nobody understands, he’d know his goalie stunk, and needed to swap out to keep going. I know you’s all like the goalie. He was great a while ago. But he ain’t getting any younger. He’s gotta go. He makes too much money. Give him to that new expansion team in Seattle or Portland (I forget which one) let them take his salary and cap full on. Bring up randaa he’s got a ring I heard. Not sure though. Never looked it up. If he does, then the coach needs to be arrested and hung by his balls for not putting in a goalie with a ring already. MORON!

  38. Wicky on your 1:50 comment – yes, they underperformed when they were the “better” on paper. But they also seemed to outperform when they were the “lesser” on paper. It is an odd but not uncommon thing in sports – plenty of good teams in history play terribly against lesser opponents or with the lead yet seem to be lights out if they are the dog or within reach late.

But I do agree (and said the other day) they need to move not just Steph (performance issues, looming nmc, aging early) but also a lot of the leadership/core group. Its just not worked out and you need to let the kids develop their own personality/style of game and ride that.

Re Smith – and Carp has said it many times this year – we have incredibly myoptic views of our defensemen (including those in minors). Look around at the rest of the league. You will find few, if any, where fans are not critical of their inconsistencies. So rather than seeking the perfect and unobtainable, better to ask if the player in question is an upgrade and if they bring something to the team that is lacking and needed. Smith, at some price, may fit that bill.

  39. IMO the first priority for a trade should be Stephan considering the impending NMC and diminishing talent. He plays too many key minutes, especially on PP and the team needs much more than he brings to the table. The next priority to trade is Kreider. Immense talent with zero hockey IQ. He takes way too many periods and/or games off, which is completely unacceptable. He also will bring the highest possible return (top pair D or top center/Prospect). Trade him out west so you only see him a couple of times a year. The bottom line is that the Rangers are not winning a cup in the next 2-3 years, so they need top prospects or top 5 pick so you have top young talent in 2-3 years. That young talent is also cheaper which helps with the cap and may allow a decent FA signing in 2-3 years. If you keep Stall and Girardi 1-2 more years, the buyout is much cheaper. Trading Stephan and Kreider also allow you the ability to protect Linbergh & Fast and maybe Grabner. The key is to plan to win a Cup, not just compete in a round or two in the playoffs so you need to have a longer term plan. Three years from now, you will have a new core that is much younger with the Top 1C and top pair D you add with theses trades plus McD, Skeiji, Vesey, Miller, Buch, Zbad, Lindbergh, Fast, Hayes(?), Smith(?), 2017 1st round pick(?). I would rather go through 2-3 painful years with a better chance at a Cup than the same old, same old, building toward PO revenue rather than the ultimate prize. Interested to hear everyones thoughts as many of you have much better insight than I do.

I know it’s an unorthodox approach and the temptation would be to continue to put him back out there after a win, but I think he’s just better with an extra day’s rest.

If Raanta goes to Vegas, backup goalie becomes major priority for Gorton.

And about how he’s been dominating the playoffs like no other player for years. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he was pretty good against us, but it wasn’t like we were sitting around freaking out that we didn’t have an answer for the magic of Erik Karlsson. 45. I would not trade Miller. I could be convinced to trade THE Kreider if the return is huge. Anaheim needs forwards. They are stacked on D, and have a couple in the AHL that have not played in the NHL yet that will. I am fine with trading Stepan excepting that I will have to trash the Stepan jersey I have. I would love to see the Rangers get Matt Duchene…….there would be your #1 center. I bet Duchene ends up in Montreal.

  46. I’d be more inclined to trade Hayes than miller or kreider. Ideally, you get a 1C (let’s say duchene). You slot zpack at 2, lindberg at 3, then get a true 4C that can win draws (Nate Thompson type).

Miller, kreider, sideshow bob, Vessy, Nash (if still here), Hayes (if still here) are your top 9 wingers.

Other option is still with 1C acquisition, zpack 2, add a guy like Hanzal as a 3, use lindberg. As 4. This scenario would imo require the moving of Nash due to hanzal $$$$.

Stepan is still a top-notch 2nd line center. (My ASSumptive theory on stepan. He puts a lot of time and energy (rightfully so) into his wife and kid(s) when he’s away from the rink.) step needs to start training Gary suter style. he should really train his legs for power and quickness. If he can get quicker through training/skating sessions, he’ll regain his edge. Crossroads for step.
