  4. Bad game for Skjei and Hayes. Really bad penalty on Hayes just now. Brady made a rookie mistake leading to a 2 on 1 goal for the Finns. And the Hayes penalty in his offensive zone …. woof.

  5. Wow. USA tire fire – another horrible penalty. I really thought they would make it to the finals. Ah well. Time to root for Sweden. Here’s hoping Hank and Oscar have a better showing than their teammates today.

  6. Haze earned his nickname again today.

That dedication that he demonstrated in the offseason and at the beginning of this season apparently wore off. He is still a good player, I want on this team, but he gives glimpses of potential, then it disappears.

  7. Saw your protected list Carp, and while I don’t want to lose any if the four ( I’m hoping for Fast)you felt were likely to get picked, I don’t think any of them are a great loss. If I’m Vegas, it’s a no brainer, you take Lindberg. He has the most upside, and plays center.

  8. With Vegas, depends so much on what other teams are putting out there and they can also cut deals prior to trade back for picks or whatever. Point is…no point.

  9. Carp, what is the basis for teams protecting players with no-trade clauses? Is that in the CBA or is it a league directive to make more valuable players available to Vegas based on entry fee. Wondering if compensation not coming back to original team would make this a trade in the first place..thx

That was also the date when he took his last shot on goal instead of passing to a teammate that is covered by two defensemen.

  12. Hayes is a coach killer. You see all that potential and expect him to do more than he does. So, you put him out there in critical situations and he does nothing. There has to come a time to realize that he’s not going to do more.

  15. So Nash only has a partial ntc correct? But he still has to be protected correct? And if it’s only a partial ntc, can’t you trade him before the expansion draft?

I protect lindberg waaaaay before I protect grabner or fast.

    I don’t know, I don’t know and finally… I don’t know. You’re welcome! : )

  17. Wicky – Nash has a modified NTC (he submits a 12 team list) and an NMC. If we trade him before the lists are submitted we can use his slot to protect someone else.

In terms of protection, if we lose one of Grabby, Lindberg, Fast, Auntie, Klein or Holden is anyone really going to jump off the ledge?

Wicky, read UK’s post. NTCs do not have to be protected from expansion, only NMCs
Subpar game by Rinne last night. 2-2 after 4.
Does anyone really want to see Ottawa playing SCF? Yuck.

  20. Great tip by Subban in OT-into his own net. Like Karlson’s goal in Game 1 against the Rangers. At least no one is saying Perry did it on purpose. P.K. had a tough night. Again NBCSN studio bozos are front runners and killed off the Ducks after they gave up the lead.

  21. A bit unfair that teams have to protect NMC players, considering they just found out about the expansion draft rules last season. But, also would be unfair to have teams’ NMCs exempt.

That said, I’d make every effort to try to retain Lindberg. Cheap, controllable players with upside potential have a lot of value, and he elevated his game in the playoffs.

  22. Thanks for the Nash info, but I’m still confused. So he has both a ntc and a nmc? The ntc is a partial though, so he can be traded wherever as long as it meets the list criteria?

  23. Optimus has lost his spark, i don’t see Vegas taking him…but he’s available, but we all know the choice for McPhee is a good goalie with some #1 potential, a 4C who has the potential to player higher up the lineup, a speedy checker who has shown an eye for the net this year (but is probably a freak year) or a hardworking 3rd/4th line wing.
For me Lindberg shows the most potential to be taken, but Grabby’s goals may tempt LV to take a gamble

  25. I expect that the man in the know, CARP cannot comment, but I have been wondering exactly why Neil Smith is banned from any recognition at MSG. Initially, I figured that it was because Sather has been such a colossal failure that he dd not want his predecessor, who actually WON something to place a spotlight on his failure. But I read something about an article that I recall reading many years ago where Smith stated that the signing of all thise useless free agents (Kamensky, Keane, Skrudland, et al) came from James Dolan, who wanted to make a splash as the new owner and that Smith actually wanted to start a rebuild. THAT is probably the reason he has not been invited back. Ask Charles Oakley or the “criminal” Knicks fan who had his season tickets yanked about that.

because he can be traded at the deadline and bring a lot more than Lindberg or Fast could. I hope they stay far away from him but i fear the worst and they would take him.

  30. Murray looked good in relief. There is not really much difference between the two in goal.

Talking about players feelings is a distraction. They all want to win. Do they want to win less with a different goalie? No.

Both goalies will cry when Ottawa kicks their ass tonight.

Grabner would bring more than that and certainly more than Fast or Lindberg would bring. For starters he would bring what Smith cost the Rangers.

  32. TYM, I can’t really talk about it while, you know, working for MSGN … but suffice it to say Smith said some pretty bad personal stuff about the owner long after he was fired. Childish stuff on both sides, though.

I don’t see any way Vegas takes Grabner. I think it will be Fast, Lindberg or Raanta. Unless the Rangers make other moves and free up spots to protect Lindberg and/or Fast.

  33. AV may protect Fast but Gorton better be sober enough to realize the Lindberg Baby has the most value.
    .
Agree taking Grabber to trade him would probably be the most value they could get. One year deal at $1.65M is a steal if he scores half as many goals with his D and PK play.
    .
Fast is the most replaceable of that lot. Jeez Louise, it’s like the love affair with Blair Betts all over again.
    .
If Kessler were a pedestrian, he would be in jail. I like, no love, tough PO hockey but he is dirty and the refs don’t give a rats behind.

  34. Alex,
Vegas would not be taking Lindberg or Fast to trade them. They are both young enough that Vegas could get 500 games out of them. Grabner is not getting them that.

  35. Carp,
This is not my typical anti Fast rant. Fast over Lindberg is just silly. Lindberg plays a more valuable position in center, and has a lot more upside to his game. Fast is what Fast is going to be.

the future assets that Vegas would get in a Grabner trade would far exceed the value Fast or Lindberg have.

I really hope Vegas is dumb and does not take Grabner and his world class speed.

depends on what Vegas gets from the other teams. They will balance forwards and centers as well as the rest of the lineup. I think you’re over valuing what Lindberg as a 4th liner means.

I think you are overvaluing Grabner. Especially for Vegas. I don’t think Lindberg ceiling is that of a 4th center.its Certainly not on an expansion team.

  39. I get it Carp. I do remember reading that article. If he went further, that is his mistake for sure. I recall it as being that he was directed to re-tool, not rebuild by his bosses. I think it is a shame. Your comment about Oakley coming back before Smith spoke volumes.

  40. also, hence the Brendl-Lundmark draft. …

I get the old “he scores he’s great, he doesn’t score he sucks” thing but I’m pretty confident the front office, coach and teammates think Fast is a better player than Lindberg. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Vegas took Fast over Lindberg if they were both available.

    Like

  41. I think Fast is the better defensively responsible player and Lindberg has some offensive upside. I don’t think it’ll be disastrous if either gets taken.

SN – Re: Kesler. I wondered why AV didn’t pull some strings to get him when he was available. Seems he’s just the type of center the Rangers need.

tomb – I think Pitt comes back tonight with a good game. They recovered from that disastrous game 6 against Washington. They can do it again against Ottawa. I’m not rooting for either team. I hate the way NBCSN fawns all over Crosby, but I’m thinking a Nashville/Ottawa final will be a snoozer.

  42. Kesler hated AV in Vancouver. When he was a FA he was asked about NY. He said there was no way he would go there. You can imagine AV being irritated at Kesler for playing too much of a physical game.

  46. Rangers are at least 2-3 years away from competing for Cup as they need D help and top 6 talent. They should trade Stephan & Hayes before expansion draft for top prospects/draft picks that can help a couple years down the road. That will allow you to protect Fast and Lindberg. Stephan has to be traded before his NMC kicks in, as his talent is diminishing quickly and you don’t want to be stuck with him as he declines further. You also get cap relief which they need. Hayes still has value which will only diminish if he continues to play the way he has over last two seasons. Trade him while you can still get a decent return.

  49. I think Murray stays in now because of Fleury’s history of dropping stink bombs in the playoffs. They can’t risk another game 3 first period. Their margin is too small now. 3-3 after six? Pens also got some offense for a change even if it took a deflection off a Sen to get them to three. They also lost another D last night. If this happened to the Rangers Ryan Graves and Chris Summers would have been playing in the playoffs. Sully has kept them together defensively by all five players on the ice making a defensive effort. It may have also inhibited their offensive output though.

  51. Consensus: Day can skate, shoot, likes the O-zone, weak in the D-zone, a puck-watcher and passive with opposition in front of the net. Granted, he’s only a kid, but this defensive stuff sounds to me too aggravatingly familiar.

  53. “Crosscheck – would like Kesler on my team. Rumor was he didn’t see eye to eye with Vino”

Oh, didn’t know that. I guess that answers that question. Kesler is getting away with mayhem in this series. When you look at the Rangers centers and the way they play and Kesler, well, Kesler’s game is more suited for the playoffs because he gets away with murder.

If Sean Day is a really good offensive player and not so good at defense then why is he a defenseman? Should he be a winger or something?

    Saw Hank’s stats in the tourney that they posted while watching last night’s game. 4-0, GAA about 1.75. Hmmmm. Of course he isn’t going up against BGB every night either. {s}

The way this year’s playoffs are unfolding, by the time they play the Final, third liners will play 1st line minutes, and the rest will be AHL fillers. Talk about war of attrition.

  57. Disclaimer….I have been to 2 of these Ducks-Preds games in Anaheim. I think that the Nashville story is interesting and they have a terrific back line. They are also well-coached. But there are some issues for me too with them. #1. While Anaheim is a nasty/dirty team, Nashville are no angels. 1. Filip Forsberg graduated from being a moel in Game 2 to a dentist last night with no calls. James Neal is still the dirty bastard he as always been. 2. These Preds appear to be studying Tomas Plekanec on video with success. They constantly throw their heads back or act like they were sticked in the face when they weren’t. 3. Fans. While the support is good and the anthem singers are cool, they are addicted to the “you suck” stuff. Constantly. Their performance on social media proves that are quite mostly novices at hockey spectating. And, of course, the officiating continues to be a joke in both series. However, Gary Bettman is proud of all of the refs, so no worries there. I guess the good thing about Anaheim not making the finals is that I won’t have to endure the invasion of Penguin fan in Anaheim, which will REALLY irritate me.

As great a skater and stick handler as Barzel is, he does not move the puck. Lots of skating around with the puck, and the occasional wish pass. Trying to keep my opinion on what I am seeing in Day realistic, but it is very hard. He looks to be special.

  62. BDL, I think it was a very good move by NY. He was projected to be top 10, or even 5. He was granted the exceptional status at 15 4th time in history ( Tavares, Ekblad, and McDavid being other 3) because of his physical ability, skating, and skills. But then he had some serious family issues which contributed to his weight gain, etc. Taking him it the third round is low risk, and potentially high reward move.
