Let’s play a game

The game is “trade a ranger.” Here are the rules:

  1. Make a trade proposal involving one or more current Rangers players.
  2. The trade proposal I like best will win a prize to be named later.
  3. I am the final arbiter of who wins.
  4. Be wary of the salary cap, NTCs, NMCs, and the expansion draft.
  5. If you use draft picks, give the round and year, and make sure that the teams have those particular picks.

Aaaaand go!

  1. Players added, RNH, Nurse, Dumba, Neidereiter, Coyle.
Players subtracted, Stepan, Nash, Klein, Zucc, Graves, and Buch.
Now younger, bigger, and faster. Got McD a partner, and Skjei a partner. Got to useful forwards from the Wild, and a gamble on greatness in RNH.

  3. Zucc for Mike Hoffman and a 2nd. Reunited with budy BGB. Nash for Vattenan. Stepan & Ryan Gropp for Charlie Coyle and a 2nd. Girardi and Staal can just go home!

  4. I would do both of those in a heart beat. Coyle can play wing or center, would have to hamstring RNH with lazy hazy; slot Hazy Daze to 3rd and VC up to 2nd. The kid is going to be a star!

  5. Anaheim needs forwards and has defenseman. Gotta be a match there. Problem is, you have to give to get. To get the guy I want. The Rangers would have to give up Miller or THE.

’18 Second round pick (From Sens for Brassard)
    Ryan Graves
    Derek Stepan
    Kevin Klein

  7. Is it inflammatory to say that JT and THE have been around now long enough for us to say that they are and will be just very good at best, never superstars? Or would either or both thrive under a different ‘system’ of coaching?

  8. My thinking is similar to James. I’d like to make something work with the Avs because I really want Duchene.

I’d go Stepan, Graves and our 2017 1st for Duchene & Zadorov.

Hate to give up another first, but this trade, along with a minor move or two adds to our young core and still gives you a win-now team while Hank’s window remains open for its last few years.

It’s NYC 4Me or BUST bros! That’s how I roll! So who should we trade for? We got bounced in the deuce! Unacceptable for us New Yorkers. How do the trades work in hockey? Same like in baseball?

  12. I’ve looked over all of the trades so far and I’m a bit disappointed. I have seen only one trade that meets my rules and has any chance of being accepted by both sides. And the worst part is I don’t like that trade!

  13. I think I found the connection with the Rangers and Tkachyovs (also has used the “English version” Tkachev – which he might be better off switching to). He was a Junior teammate of Anthony Duclair in 2014-15 with the Quebec Remparts. Our version is a 21-year-old 5-10/178 LW who shoots right. He spent last year in the KHL and scored 14 goals and 25 assists in 49 games and added a goal and two assists in five playoff games.

The other is a 6-0/210 center (23-y-o) and signed to stay in Russia for another year at the beginning of the month. Of course, that was before the KHL announced they are going to start lopping off teams so who knows what is going on in Russia.

    3. I am the final arbiter of who wins. (nobody cares 😉
    4. Be wary of the salary cap, NTCs, NMCs, and the expansion draft. (Is that all? Nothing about Gorton’s biorhythms, AV’s incessant gum chewing, Slat’s PP strength or how many crayons Dolan can eat for breakfast?)

  17. I’m not commenting on the political ramifications of the decision upholding the block on the travel ban, but I would like to just point out that few times as a lawyer have I read the first sentence of a decision so decidedly against one side as this:

The question for this Court, distilled to its essential form, is whether the Constitution, as the Supreme Court declared in Ex parte Milligan, 71 U.S. (4 Wall.)2, 120 (1866), remains “a law for rulers and people, equally in war and in peace.” And if so, whether it protects Plaintiffs’ right to challenge an Executive Order that in text speaks with vague words of national security, but in context drips with religious intolerance, animus, and discrimination.

    Absolutely vicious legal writing there.

  18. Carp,
You rightfully gave Richter a lot of credit for game 6, but you leave out the guy who most of the Devils feel was the guy who killed them. That would be Kovalev. It was Kovalev who scored (as you mentioned) to get them going. It was Kovalev who made the pass to Messier for the tying goal, and it was Kovalev and Leetch who were absolutely flying on a 4 on 4,who created the eventual game winner by Messier.

  19. Good point about AK27 being left out of the Game 6 heroics. Frankly, if he doesn’t double clutch on his goal I wonder if Marty doesn’t stop the first shot. Lots of IFs went right for the Rangers in that game and Game 7. However, I still contend that IF Richter didn’t play like every goalie the Rangers face (s) then Messier and Kovalev are footnotes in the Devils 1994 Stanley Cup win.

  20. Hellberg reportedly signed with China of the KHL. I don’t think he was ever in their plans as an NHL-level goalie, even a potential backup.

Speaking of … you guys saw (or read if you got to the bottom of my MSGNetworks.com column) that Igor Shestyorkin was named the goalie on the all-KHL all-star team. He’s the next guy, IMO.

  21. Carp,
Sadly I have watched that 3rd period many times over. Messier was the 3rd best skater ( not counting Richter) on the ice. Leetch and Kovalev were the dominant players. Messier was the side kick.

  22. I know Lundqvist hasn’t led the Rangers to the Promised Land, but fans forget some of those clutch performances – like the back-to-back shutouts on back-to-back days to eliminate the Caps in 2013 and allowing just three goals in the final three games to beat the Penguins in 2014.

Hank has also had some real clunkers like the end of the Pens series last year and being pulled against the Habs in Game 5 2014. But let’s not forget that Richter had his playoff clunkers – like giving up six against Vancouver in Game 5 in 1994 – a loss that cost me a shot to party with The Cup.

The one thing that Richter has over Hank is that Mike played behind a 1994 Rangers team that oozed talent, leadership and tons of Stanley Cup championship winning experience.

  23. As many times as Hank has been clutch, he has broken just as many. 3 OT finals games, Hank broke before Quick. Who can forget game 7 against Tampa, and that weak ass goal. You can go right to this year, and the OTs against the Sens. It might not be fair, but that is how I will remember Hanks career. Failure in the biggest of spots.

  24. A righty vs a lefty. A player that fits naturally on the right side of your captain and franchise D man.

And SkjeL is NOT as good an overall player as trouba yet. Sorry, he isn’t.

  25. It would be a similar situation as the brassard for z pack trade…a lefty/righty thing.

And yes folks, lefty/righty does actually make a difference

  26. There is nothing to buy. It is fact. While Henrik has had many great playoff performances, he has had clunkers that cost his team in every playoff year. That is how I will remember him as well.

  28. James,
You may feel Skjei is there 2nd best Dman, but the coach doesn’t. Otherwise he would not have “lost him” on the bench against the Sens.

Sami Vatanen requires torn labrum surgery, which means he is out for about 4 to 6 month + getting back in previous shape if any… So, forget about this trade and find something else for “B-” Nash.

  30. BDL then the problem is with the coach. And trading away young players because the coach has a problem is asinine. Not to mention it’s a concept that’s burnt this organization and set it back for years at different times. I know you’ll agree with that but still

and the rangers and a select few other teams spent what they wanted to. plenty of other teams had salaries 1/2 or less than the top spenders.

Disagree on you putting goat horns on Henrik vs the Kings in particular (as well as against Tampa). The finals vs the kings was 1 way traffic once the 3rd period started and that continued through the overtime. The better team won.

You know I love you bro but your comment at 5:02 makes you sound a bit like troll (which i know you are not) who doesn’t read any posts by others.

During the season I stated many times that skjel needs to figure out how to win wall battles. He did a great job of that in the playoffs…which i also stated.

Numerous times during the season I also stated I would keep skjel over staal, and I still would.

Staal has that pesky little nmc though.

It would be very incorrect of you to assume because I mention a player as part of a trade, that I do not like the player.

You have to give to get and right now I think the rangers need a stud young righty D man more than they need a good young lefty D man.

  35. Carp I enjoyed your latest. Tough to think what might have been for the Rangers this year. Ah well. As for the Nylander take down of Henrik, that was a moment of pure joy that really epitomizes hockey for me. I love those vignettes and there are lots of them in this game. And I am overjoyed for Hank that he got the gold with his brother. Hoping it gives him some swagger heading into next season.

  46. I think the Rangers would have lost to the Pens, but, it would have bee a better series than I would have guessed a month ago. The role players for the Pens have not been the same as last year, but, Crosby and Malkin would have pulled them through. Carp captured my feeling that this was a opportunity missed. They were the deepest team and the playoffs and couldn’t close out games and/or win in OT. We overestimated the rest of the field. It was there for the taking. Ugh!
