Let’s Go Preds

The game will continue through the weekend, but that last thread was getting long.  So, to repeat, here are the rules.

  1. Make a trade proposal involving one or more current Rangers players.
  2. The trade proposal I like best will win a prize to be named later.
  3. I am the final arbiter of who wins.
  4. Be wary of the salary cap, NTCs, NMCs, and the expansion draft.
  5. If you use draft picks, give the round and year, and make sure that the teams have those particular picks.

So far, I think there is one clear leader as most of the proposals made are, IMO, pure fantasy.

  1. Stepan and our first rounder for Duchene isn’t as far fetched as adding Barrie to the mix. I think Sakic would consider it seeing as it gives him a 26 year old NHL ready Center and another selection in the first round after the 4th overall pick.

  2. If Girardi and Staal are basically unmoveable based on salary and one one will be bought out why wouldn’t they agree to waive NMC for expansion draft? Appears they could keep NMC for remainder of contract after draft. Thinking Rangers could go with 8 skaters to protect to free up 2 additional forward spots they could use among Fast, Lindberg and Grabner .

  3. Agree buyout works for player so whats the risk for them to waive NMC if Vegas not going to claim them or if get one of them at lower price after buyout if they have interest

  4. Carp, they would be waiving NMC for expansion draft only – read that NMC remains intact after expansion. If they are not going to get claimed anyway they would benefit by getting bought out for 2/3 of $ and can sign elsewhere or they stay with Rangers at same contract if not bought out and keep NMC

  5. I think a few things could happen if they waived their NMCs. The Rangers could decide its a better use of $$ to trade them but retain salary instead of buying them out. They could also be traded a cap floor team at the tail end of their contract so Arizona or Carolina can save a few mil. Point is they would rather be bought out and make more money than have either of those things happen.

  7. Better yet… let’s ask the audience. Please kids, tell us, what do you think Arniel’s job is as an assistant coach? Do you think he does it well? Don’t be shy…. any and all answers are welcome!

even if we went with 8 skaters that would still only have 7 forwards plus McDonagh. Which is the same amount of forwards as 7-3-1. So Girardi and Staal have no impact on protecting except on defense and currently Holden and Klein are not worth protecting. If we signed Smith or traded for a dman before expansion then Girardi and/or Staal would impact protected list.

  10. Gotcha Alex guess this strategy makes sense if they move forward /Stephan for defenseman …though it would only free up one forward protection spot

  11. Thank you for the advise, 4ever.

That’s a different book, “Uncontested” Dan.

CCCP, you still accusing me of hating Euros? If you don’t know what a guy’s job is, how can you suggest he’s doing it poorly. Fanboy talk.

Beezle, I think plenty of coaches would like to have Girardi at a much-reduced cap hit. I can think of a bunch of teams in the Metro who could use a third-pair RH. Including NYR.

I guess I don’t understand the whole waiving NMC vs. buyout discussion. … I think if they’re going to buy him out, they’re going to buy him out.

Again with not knowing what guy does. I asked you like 10 times already. If PK / PP / FORWARDS isnt his responsibilities, then what? Again… yet to get an answer.

  13. Great question, St Pete. But we shouldn’t ask that question anymore because Carp gets upset 😦

I think Carp dislikes me…not because I am a Euro but because I think I give him a hard time.

  14. uummm… I believe *I* and most if not all of the people on here *know* what he does BUT you *Carp* pretend like that is not what he *does* by telling me that I am incorrect lol… so once again… if he doesn’t do what most of think he *does* then WHAT DOES HE DO? (according you are our guy on the inside)

ps, this post was NOT meant to piss you off Carp.

  17. So I’m still catching up on this Expansion draft thing. I don’t see any benefit to do the eight skater thing rather than 7 forwards and 3 D. Even if Staal and Girardi waive their NMCs they have to protect McD so that leaves them 7 spots for forwards which is a net loss of one D spot. It is only seems to benefit teams with deep Ds and thin forward groups. (Nashville, Anaheim, Minny?) Am I missing something?

  18. Got a reminder of how long ago they won the Cup. I was watching a Bruin game and they were talking about Charlie McAvoy. They mentioned that he grew up in Long Beach idolizing Brian Leetch. He was born five years after Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!

you nailed it on the protected thing. The 8 skaters only is for teams that want to protect 4 or more dmen (or the very unlikely case where a team has no dmen they want to protect).

Carp, – let veteran dog bark freely at his will, – he is truly independent minded, free spirit. Let’s be friends.

  25. I’m a little late to the game here, but old Ranger fan was right on the money last post. Ryan Ellis is the target.

Nashville is one of those teams who has a 4th defenseman that they’d probably rather not lose for free. It could be Ekholm, but in terms of our needs, Ellis fits the bill.
Before the season, you could make the argument that Nashville is an easy 8 F/D protected team. But with the emergence of guys like Arvidsson, Jarnkrok, etc…they have a nicer group of forwards than most give them credit for. But still not 7 deep. Coupled with a bit of a need at center, being that Fisher is getting up there, I could see…

Stepan for Ellis. Maybe some picks and prospects tipping the scales either way, but the bones of the deal are those two guys.

This gives Nashville an extremely solid return, as well as an assurance that they won’t lose him for free (or if they needed to protect him, they won’t lose a Neal or Arvidsson). Nashville is definitely in a bit of a hard spot here. Though I’d imagine that a dozen teams at least would be in on Ellis or Ekholm.

The Rangers would subsequently need to make one of Staal or Girardi disappear. Being that a Girardi buyout is on the table and semi acceptable, I’ll let Gorton do his job and not mansplain it to him.

Ellis would look mighty good next to McDonagh.

  26. …and though I think Ryan Ellis is the best legit target for us – I’m going to officially play a different trade:

    NYR – Derek Stepan
    VAN – Chris Tanev
(subsequent buyout of Dan Girardi, at the very least)

Right now Vancouver is looking at a 7-3-1 configuration with:
F – Sedin, Sedin, Eriksson, Sutter, Horvat are definites. Final two rounded out by Baertschi and Granlund (meh)
    D – Tanev, Edler, Gudbranson
    G – Who cares.

Going with those players leaves dmen Sbisa and Biega exposed. Not great by any means (personally I think Sbisa kind of stinks), but the Canucks are light at forward. The Sedins and Eriksson have full NMCs, so if Vancouver wanted to protect Sbisa for any reason, they couldn’t go with the 8-1 configuration without losing one of Sutter or Horvat.

Anyway, Vancouver could certainly use Stepan up front, and Tanev could slide in on the first pair with McD.

  27. The reason I put Nash in as an option on those kinds of trades is I’m not sure that the trading partner would like Step’s cap hit and NTC. Nash’s contract only has a year left on it so there is no long term issue. Of course that kind of makes him a rental. Nash will be like Eric Staal after last year. His price will go way down based on his drop off in performance. He may need to go UFA to find the market which will make hard for the Rangers to resign. At half of what he is making he is a great player, but, no at $8 million.
