And the winner is… JPP!

I think the winner is jpp with his suggestion of Hayes for Tanev. Although I don’t love that trade because I’m not much of a Tanev fan, it’s the only one that actually makes some sense for the parties involved and has a chance of being accepted by both sides. Someone else suggested Stepan for Tanev, but I think you can get much more than a middling defenseman for Stepan.

JPP, e-mail me your address at rangersreport2@gmail.com so I can mail you your prize.

If anyone wants to know why their trade was not selected, feel free to ask in the comments and I’ll give you my reasoning why I didn’t like your trade.

  1. you wouldn’t trade Stepan, who is older, slower and pretty much reached his ceiling for middling dman but you would trade Haze, who is faster, younger and has yet to reach his potential, for that same middling dman. Yeah…makes sense.

  2. and how can we get more for Stepan if according to almost the entire NYR fan base Stepan is the worst player on the planet lol

  3. First, Stepan has more value than Hayes on the trade market, period, end of story. If you disagree, then there’s no point in discussing it. Second, Hayes isn’t really a speedy guy, either. Third, you still can trade Stepan. No one said that the Rangers can only make one trade and then they are forbidden from making other trades. Hayes for Tanev is the right value.

  4. BDL, pretty much, yes. As I said, I don’t like the trade, but it’s the only one that had a snowball’s chance in hell of being accepted.

Nash for Vatanen was the only other trade that came close.

  5. But that one has Nash’s protection issue, Anaheim cap issue (they can’t eat Nash’s contract even with discharging Vatanen), and the issue of whether Anaheim would want more term on whatever their return for Vatanen is.

  11. The thing I was most concerned with was making a trade that had the possibility of being accepted by all parties. To me, that was the initial threshold to consideration. This trade was the only one that met that threshold. That’s why I said, best of a bad lot.

  12. CCCP, certainly doesn’t, but if he didn’t have a NMC, the Rangers would be able to trade him for value. Not as much as Tanev (older, left handed, bigger contract running for longer), but they would get a decent player for him, for sure.

PITTSBURGH, PA (May 30, 2018) Mayor William Peduto issued the following statement regarding the catfish hurling incident during last night’s Stanley Cup Final debut between the Penguins and the Nashville Predators:
“This has turned into a whale of a story. From my perch, I agree with Mayor Barry that we shouldn’t be baited into interfering with this fish tale, but if the charges eventually make their way to a judge I hope the predatory catfish hurler who got the hook last night is simply sentenced to community service, perhaps cleaning fish at Wholey’s.”

Apparently there is now a movement amongst teams to start carry enforcer again due to stickwork in games against star players and offencive players.

Seems ridiculous to me, get rid of the instigator rule and quit protecting the perp after an infraction, and that will curb a lot of it. Not all of it, nothing will do that.

And yes the rangers roster has not measured up in the last decade to the cup winners, primarily three teams. except for boston. 25 others didn’t measure up either although the future looks bright for edm and tor. Oh the benefits of bottoming out (sometimes). Pitt and chi especially also realized that benefit.

can’t have 2 slow centers who won’t shoot.

Trading Stepan for a defenseman leaves a huge hole at center, trading Stepan for a lookalike center who makes a similar salary is a lateral move that is a grass greener enthusiasts dream but not a hockey gm move. Trading Stepan for a former first round bust is covfefe and the last trade that Eklund got right will be some time in the future, after we’ve all passed on. Trading Stepan because of salary means that you’ve become Arizona. Stepan’s salary, like it or not, is league standard so get used to the situation because we’re always going to have comparable contracts on the books if we want to actually, remain in the league.

As for Stepan, I just want him traded before the no trade kicks in. Don’t want to have to listen to BDL Wicky and Doodie tell everyone how right they were for the next few years 🙂
Seriously though, trading Stepan isn’t blowing up the roster. Depending on the return it may not make them much better but then again losing Yandle was supposed to really hurt the blueline and look at how that turned out. A blueline got worse alright. Florida’s…

  98. Disagree with the notion that you trade Stepan for a “look alike making the same money”. For instance, if they could land Duchene that’s the same money but certainly not a similar player. Other options and other players that could potentially be involved would probably involve cheaper and younger names with more upside than the ceiling Step clearly reached a couple years back. If that’s not enough, none of those players are likely to have a no trade clause for the next 4-5 years.

  100. Good morning, boneheads!
You trade Stepan, alone, or as a part of a package, only if it makes the team better. And if the sole goal is to do it so that he doesn’t enter his NTC is a big mistake. Let’s not undervalue him, the way some of us sound, it seems we should be lucky to get a 4th rounder back.

  101. As for the Draft, I originally thought the Rangers should look to move out of the first (#21) and pick up two second rounders with the Sabres being the target (#37 and #54).

However, with Carolina having three second round picks there is some room for a big deal. The Rangers would deal either Hayes or Stepan and the 1st round pick to Carolina for Justin Faulk and two of the ‘canes second round picks. Carolina has their own (#42), the Rangers (#52) and Pittsburgh’s (#61 or #62). I’d take the two lowest picks if I could get the Hurricanes to toss in an extra pick – maybe a third rounder in 2018. The Rangers could use that pick as an enticement to Vegas to pick a Klein or Holden in the Expansion Draft. Of course, you can even out the deal with minor league players.

  103. Trade Step and Nash for:
    1. RD help – priority #1 is an RD for the next 3 to 5 seasons
    2. a younger center (Mika/Brass like deal)
    .
Minny is the team for D help, not sure about pivot but
    .
Avs spending #5 in league. http://www.spotrac.com/nhl/positional/center/
    .
NYR is currently 16/30 mostly due to Zika/Haze on bridge deals and Oscar making yeoman’s wages.
    .
Step was #9 among NYR forward in pts/game (5v5); Nash #8 (injuries notwithstanding, this guy did not produce contrary to popular opinion).
    .
This team scored plenty without their high priced ‘stars’. The missed Mika (#6) more than anybody else. Oscar #6 and Lazy Hazy #10.

  104. This team once again goes into the time of year when they can address roster issues and once again, still need a NHL 1C.

When is the last time we had an NHL 1C? Nylander?

  105. I like coyle a lot from minty, but he isn’t a 1C imho. I’d love to have him on this team, but you’d have to make a spot for him that isn’t necessarily a “need”.

  106. I think the 3 most important players to move are Stepan, Nash, and Hayes…in that particular order.

I also dangle SkjeL, kreider, and our 1st rounder this year if necessary. I’d rather keep both those players, but I’d give to get if necessary. Only way I care about the first rounder this year is if valardi (sp?) falls that far, which he won’t.

The buy out that has to be made is staal, and that’s a must.

  107. I for one do not like the idea of trading down for more picks Anthony M. Yes Justin Faulk would be an upgrade but #2’s are a crap shoot and won’t impact the team for quite a few years. It’s time for the NYR to start holding on to 1st rounders. And let’s start dealing from strenght’s if we can’t get the better of a deal don’t make.

  109. My take about trading down is value. I think that, depending how far down you go in the second, the Rangers could get just as good a player in the second than in the first. Most likely anyone the Rangers take in the first round is going to at least three years to make an impact. I also think that I might be able to get the same or similar type player in the second round this year.

  112. I am really not disagreeing with you Anthony all your points are good ones. I am just saying it’s time for the Rangers to develope a #1 pick mind set and this is a good year to start doing that. Trading it to improve the team to win a cup is habitual, and has yet to accomplish the ultimate goal!

  119. They lack forwards? In addition to the older guys, Neiderreiter, Granlund, Zucker, Coyle, and Haula have started rounding into form for them. They led the western conference in goals for, and were second in the entire league behind only Pittsburgh. They just got snake bitten in the playoffs and it cost them.
