NEW POST

I was going to wait until tonight to put up a new post before Game 2, but then I realized there’s no game tonight. So, here’s a blank slate for you to work on.

Does anyone want to write report cards or any guest blogs?

  1. Actually, I think I read somewhere that Covfefe(cuv-fee-fae) is actually a Antediluvian term meaning “In the end we win.” It was commonly used by the sons of Adam to rail against the evil actions of the fallen who had led man astray.

  2. So how is Mika involved with that single? Did he write the lyrics? Music? Is he the producer of the singer? Should they play this at the Garden after Rangers score a goal? SO MANY QUESTIONS!

I did email him but he never replied. I used the email in his bio here. Maybe it’s a fake email.

Weber played 3:27 and Irwin played 4:00 in the 1st period. Frankly, that’s too much for them. Pens taking advantage when they’re on the ice.

  6. Can’t say I’m very emotionally invested in the finals. Glad that the Pens won’t sweep, but , the more I watch them the more their air of invincibility dissolves. They took 2 OTs to beat Ottawa in 7 and the 16th seed is playing them pretty even. They are not Golden State cruising to a championship.
After watching him play more closely there is no way the Rangers get Ryan Ellis for Stepan. He scored as many as Stepan did this year from the backline.
There has been talk of Girardi AND Staal being bough out. I don’t see Gorton going into next season with McD, Skej and Holden as the only returning D and ultimately I think Shattenkrik (7X7) will be too expensive and long term for them and I am not sure they can resign Smith. They certainly can’t afford them both. I think Dan G gets bought out and Staal starts the season with them. They will bring in a mid level D either by trade or FA to plug a hole and the D will continue to be an issue next season unless one of their prospects unexpectedly breaks out.

  10. If the Rangers are trading Stepan……they need to get a study defenseman or a high potential center. They do not need anymore wingers. That is the only place they are stacked. Unless they decide JT Miller is going to be a center.

  11. Stepan must go but as slow as he is it may take awhile for him to get where we trade him! No Evander Kane! I think Miller is ready for Center, but I would still trade Opie for a younger quicker center or a RD. Don’t underestimate Stepan still trade value.

  12. Wait until you see Keith Prmieau’s 2 kids. One is a draft-eligible goalie prospect and the other is a 6’5″ forward. Both will probably play in the NHL. Craig Johnson, my son’ high school coach, ex-King, Blues and Ducks player’s youngest boy was just taken 3rd overall in the USHL Draft. A supremely skilled defenseman and will probably make the NHL too. Has offers in-hand from most of the top NCAA programs at 16.

  13. I’m thinking that Carl Hagelin gets exposed in the expansion draft and with his contract, he might not get taken by Vegas. If not, might the Penguins buy him out? As valuable as he can be, his is a bad contract. If he were to be bought out and Grabner or Fast get taken by Vegas, might he come back to the Rangers? I know, that’s a lot of ifs.

  14. The reason Miller is not playing center was more about giving Haze the role, more than JT not warranting a closer look.
    .
Haze is a regular season data dream gor the stats crowd but becomes a ghost when the ice gets smaller. He can distribute but lack of foot speed and Defensive IQ make him a less than ideal pivot.
    .
This team needs more scorers, less dancers.

  15. Without the dead cap space Smith and Shattenkirk would come in at around $11 Million, which is what Staal + Girardi make. But the dead cap space from their buyouts make this unworkable. I don’t see either waiving NMCs since they can make more by being bought out and resigning with a team of their choice. There is a market for both of them at half what they make now.

BTW if any one believes they can get Ellis for Stepan I would be all in on that. I just don’t Nashville buying it.

  16. Nashville will go with the 8 skaters approach i reckon – they won’t want to lose PK, Josi, Ellis or Ekholm – although don’t be surprised to start seeing some deals soon to protect other players in exchange for picks/prospects

  17. I also don’t think either Girardi or Staal will be bought out – it leaves too much dead cap space. There will be a trade for one, possibly eating some salary and don’t be surprised if LTIR is explored as an option……

  18. So they go after Smith and pass on Shattenkirk? Are we over looking regular season Smith because he was better in the playoffs? Are there other options they should explore? Smith was a third pair D for them and his price tag for that slot will be high. Paying him more doesn’t make him top 4.

  19. ORF, I’m with you on Smith. He wasn’t good his entire career in Detroit he was underwhelming in the regular season for us, but then he has a good playoffs so he should get 4MM plus? Imagine if they resigned Holden because of that strong two months he had in the middle of the season!

wicky, it goes into effect on 7/1.

  20. He gets to make a list of 15 teams he cannot be traded to, meaning that there will be 16 teams that he can be traded to. It’s a pretty good size market. Even if we have to divest a middling asset, it would be worth it to be rid of him from our books and our roster. And if we eat a lot of the salary, we probably wouldn’t have to give up much at all.

    Like

  21. I think they have to question was Smith so good because he became comfortable on the team or was regular season Smith the norm?
If playoff Smith is the norm, i’d sign him in a heartbeat – 4 x $4m

  22. I don’t think Shattenkirk would be an upgrade except as pp specialist. He’s a 3rd pair defeneman and horrible in own zone. We’d be praying for the next lockout to get out from under that deal.

    Big time pass.

  23. It’s all going to start happening in 10 days time. Buyout window opens, time to watch the waiver announcements. Then it’ll be lists, lists, lists, dodgy deals with McPhee to not draft players or take on bad ones…it’ll be more fun than the annual let down on July 1st

  24. Count me as one of the guys who may be overrating Smith. I wouldn’t give him stupid money, but would do 4×4. I think he is going to get stupid money from somebody else though.

  25. 2-2 after 4? Sure hope so. What I really hope for is less yellow in the uniforms that are on the ice. What person in the NHL thought it was ok to allow that? Surprised Mellow Yellow not a sponsor. Maybe they are and I was just blinded by the skaters.

On all that trade and expansion stuff… save your fingers. Expect the unexpected. Zen and all that. The more you guys get into the minutae of trades, etc the more you will hate whatever ends up happening.

  26. It’s situations like this ( expansion draft), that really good GMs take advantage of. I have a good feeling that Gorton is going to come out of the next two months with a better team, and a more flexible salary cap.

  27. I don’t think they go more than 4 X 4 for Smith. That may mean he goes elsewhere. Hopefully Gorton gets creative. I do think the out years of the Shattenkirk contract will become a burden to someone. 35 yrs old + at $ 7 million +. It’s worth it if you win the Cup. Just the source of p*ssing and moaning if you don’t.

  28. 8 weeks? Does Gorton know he works in NY. The fans will be asking for his head on July 2nd.
It may take him a little longer than that to erase Sather’s legacy, barring a miracle.

  29. /If I’m Gorton.
This is what I do. Firstly, no reason to buy out Girardi in June. Ziba will likely file for arbitration giving him a second buy out window if necessary. After July 1 when nmc goes away, he can try to make a deal, even if he has to retain half of salary it will still be better than having dead cap space on the books for 6 years, right-handed d are still a scarce commodity and he’ll still have the buy out option as a fallback. Expect that he’s exploring deals right now, trying for a second rounder (Buffalo has 2 picks in both 2nd and 3rd round, try for one of those) or at least a third.
Left side is ‘set’ – McDonagh Skjei Staal
Right side is all up in the air for next year. Holden & Klein are the two returnees, then you have Kampfer and I think that Gorton is going to be going very hard at Smith. Add to that, I believe they think that Bereglazov (another lefty who plays right) will be competing for a spot, hopefully in camp but definitely sometime during the year. The right side is going to be a work in process with both Zoborovskiy and Day starting in Hartford next year, it will be for the next couple of years. I don’t think Gorton has any plans for Shattenkirk and will at best make a minor trade for a stopgap/insurance on the right side.
There is also the option of moving one of McDonagh or Skjei to the right side to allow Holden/Smith/Bereglazov to play their ‘natural’ side.

    If I’m Gorton.\

  30. So if Shattenkirk signs here for 7 x 7 when is the next lockout again?

Say it’s in 3 years so we do the amnesty thing for him in 3 years.

Like I said that’s a lot for 3rd pair pp specialist or not. So would 6 million and even numbers further south than that.

But I guess we don’t learn and won’t build a team through the draft.

You can add Vesey, Hayes, Zucc, Lindberg, McD and Girardi to that list. While they were not drafted, they have played in any other organization, and have been developed by the Rangers.

  34. The only team to be constructed via a draft is an expansion team and even they will have traded players in their opening night lineup

  35. Carp on your 2:05 post, Gorton must find a way to convince Hawk Eye Staal to go play with one of his brothers before his skill set is completely shot. I know easier said than done. Buy out Girardi, trade Stepan for Galchenyuk, (I have a feeling about that guy), trade Zucc or Miller for a top RD, and find a way to keep Antti. Sounds impossible but this team needs a bit of luck sooner or later!

  36. Re Day
Not positive but I’ve seen where Day’s exceptional status and playing 4 years in major juniors already may make him eligible for Hartford in 17/18.

  37. I don’t necessarily disagree with your point of Zucc or Miller bringing a quality RD. But I never would have thought the Sens would trade Zika for BGB, considering the age difference and Zika’s potential.

  38. Fast had the same surgery as Lindberg? He may play in November but won’t really be back until January.

Agree with Carp on preferring to lose Raanta rather than a forward. That assumes that Hank’s rehab goes smoothly and Allaire can make lemonade out of lemons again. OTOH if 2016-2017 regular season Hank comes back again they could be in deep dogie doo doo. Thoughts like those are why Gorton always has pained expression on his face.

No, it’s not. People proclaim things puns that are not puns but are plays on words or (as in your case) an ironic or satiric use of a supposed compliment.

Examples of actual puns from the two greatest creators of said humor:

Now is the winter of our discontent
    Made glorious summer by this sun of York;

    William Shakespeare
Hopefully, no explanation is necessary as boneheads are very well educated

As I say, we tried to remove the tusks. But they were embedded so firmly we couldn’t budge them.
Of course, in Alabama the Tuscaloosa, but that is entirely ir-elephant to what I was talking about.

  40. If you look at the McPhee Capitals era its difficult to predict who he might take from us, certainly when you look at the goalie history: Kolzig, Huet, Theodore, Varlamov, Neuvirth you could say he was more interested in putting together a powerful offence based around Ovie than spending big on a netminder. This strategy may put Raanta at risk of being drafted as he’s cheap and could do the job (or platoon) while they wait for another goalie to mature (like a Malcolm Subban or Jonas Korpisalo). Or he could go for a bigger name (Luongo or Howard) to fish the puck out of the net until he can put a more competitive team out there….

  41. Now they can expose Fast with injury (should have anyway, but at least Commish Gorton can placate Vino) along with Rantaa Clause, add a trade – Girardi for picks allows to keep both Oscar and Grabber.
    .
Cup Final seems like a Preds Defense v Pits Offense but Preds O is better than Pits D and goalie playing better as well so advantage Nashville. Refs, of course, on Pits side.

  42. If we are able to trade Girardi, it will be a Girardi for No Girardi plus we retain 25-50% salary. If we get anything back other than a late round draft pick or body for the farm team thats a bonus.
Every GM in the league knows the history, knows the possession struggles, lack of foot speed, its no secret, there will be no wool pulled over anyones eyes this time (Bob Gainey is no longer a GM). Other GM’s may even demand a sweetener just to take him at reduced cap hit!

I wouldnt be surprised to see some sort of LTIR fudge but i don’t know if Girardi’s desire to play will put the kybosh on that.
