The Vegas Golden Knights are going to come out of next week’s expansion draft with a war chest of draft picks and prospects from teams trying to steer them away from exposed players.
For that, they can thank the NHL, which named the expansion draft criteria to both to give the Knights a collection of solid players on which to build, and forced teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets into unenviable ransom payments to Vegas GM George McPhee.
From Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch, it appears a deal has been cut to make sure that the Knights stay away from forwards Alexander Wennberg and Josh Anderson, backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo and veteran defensemen Jack Johnson and David Savard:
**The Jackets are believed to be trading this year’s first-round draft pick (No. 24 overall) and a prospect (not Pierre-Luc Dubois or Sonny Milano) to Vegas for assurances that the Golden Knights will select either left wing Matt Calvert, center William Karlsson or defenseman Ryan Murray. Vegas’ acquisition of the contract of injured veteran forward David Clarkson ($5.25 million salary cap hit) may also be part of the deal.**
Wow. The least they can do is also pick up the Clarkson contract for that bounty.
A first, a prospect and Ryan Murray so George McPhee doesn’t draft Jack Johnson. What a world.
Pierre LeBrun hears that the Knights already have three first-rounders banked thanks to the expansion draft pressure.
The owners had millions fall into their laps in exchange for this expansion. They all see Bettman as a hero.
Don’t give up our 1st JG!
I don’t mind giving up our R1 this year. Mind you I wouldn’t trade it for a 35-year old character player or anything. But if we sneak our R1 into a deal to get a someone like Mackinnon, or use it to get someone to take Staal’s hit off the books – do it.
Conversely, any deals we make that result in us acquiring additional R1 picks should be for next year. I want no part of the back 9 of the 2017 first round.
It still steams me that the Isles got Edmonton’s 15th overall in 2015 rather than us. Griff Reinhart is middling at best. Talbot is their best goalie since Cujo. Right now we should be talking about how we can afford to trade Step because Matt Barzal is ready to come up.
Some good GMs are going to make a killing with this expansion draft. Teams are panicking all over the place. If it were me, I would lose the player and move on. Giving away draft picks and other assets is just silly. I hope Gorton is there to pick the carcass.
so who gets better return for trading Dumba? Minnesota from a panicking GM today at 2:55, or Vegas at the draft?
Is it possible gorton makes 2 moves today?
Sounds like eberle will be on the move by next weekend
I think going into next season with 5 of your top 6 d men being mcdonut, Holden, staal, smith, SkjeL is a mistake.
Cccp broke the blog.
3 hours until trade freeze
Did you guys see the ullmark wedding pic? Hilarious
and thanks CCCP for the new thread
Wicky – I would rather see Holden grabbed by Vegas, we trade Step for a legit McD partner, and for the third pairing – either a mid-level swap for Mark Pysyk, or sign Cody Franson for 2 years.
McD-guy who deserves time with McD
Skjei Guevara – Smith
Staal – Pysyk/Franson
I’d rather see him grabbed as well
God will someone just send me pics or a video of Holden being grabbed?!?
Holden is going to be protected unless they trade for a Dman before 3.
I figure that there will be 1 more expansion in 2 years so we better be careful in handing out no move and no trade deals especially for dmen.

Word is Tobias Enstrom has done WIN a huge favour, agreed to waive his NMC to help the Jets with the expansion draft.
I think the most appropriate thing to do would be to have Mcdonagh Trouba Smith and Skjei as the top 4by 5pm today

That would be a very good top 4 James
Glad Gorton not panicking to protect Lindberg. Lay back and enjoy it.
enstrom waiving may well take trouba out of equation
Trouba for sure will cost a ton.
gotta give to get!
Montreal seems to be moving D men out….when that seems to be a team need. They must be acquiring one from somewhere.
Mike smith on his way to Calgary.
Mike smith is terrible
Raanta, and Stepan to Arizona? Arizona needs a goalie now.
But having said that – Stepan and raanta to Arizona?
I was first, so if it happens I get the credit. 😀
Johnson going to AZ for expansion purposes apparently
I was fashionably late. so i win
Stepan and Raanta for WHAT? Barren waste land
Is this post new?
I’m guessing this trade “freeze” deadline is like the actual deadline…deals will be announced after the actual time has passed
With Max Domi in Zona, wouldn’t Step be 2C
Not the way writers in AZ see it apparently. Too bad they have nothing to offer that they’d part with
I’ll be moved if the Rangers make a move. Gorton will do nothing unless it really lands what this cotton candy crew desperately needs!
roll the dice and don’t give draft picks or otherwise to vegas to prevent them taking 1 of the 4 frequently mentioned unless they agree to take a big salary like staal in which case i’d give them our 1st pick this year. but staal is not waiving so moot point.
Chykrun is the only member of the ‘yotes I’d be interested in and he’s a lefty. If they give up their two best assets from the roster and don’t get a right D man I’m going to be worried
So I guess they’re fine with losing Raanta for nothing…
I guess they’re ok with losing one of their players. Either the price was too high, or Gorton was ok with it to begin with.
Sounds it, JamesG. Although I think McPhee will take Lindberg
Losing lindberg would be bad
My preference would actually be to lose Raanta. They’ve had a pretty good track record with back ups. As long as Allaire is here, they’ll be fine.
If I understand the rules “correctly” (doubtful at best), teams can still trade but only with Vegas until after the draft on Wednesday correct? So still time to make “don’t take this guy” deals.
Yes, Wicky. After 10 am tomorrow
it’s a bad loss with any of he 4 but my preference would be fast. i don’t think he’ll be selected though.
Stepan Miller and 21st pick for McKinnon and Barrie.
Look at the bright side. Now they can protect Holden and preserve the Holden-Staal pairing for late in games they have a 1 goal lead.

Apparently one “leaked” list already lol
Capitals will lose beagle or Schmidt or possibly oshie or alzner if both those Ufa were to get signed.
One of oshie or alzner
or Grubauer Eric
mcphee was their gm so plenty of info for him
he also worked for isles for a while so interesting on that front too
Right dumb me forgot the goalie spot
Welcome to New York, Mikko Koivu!
Hey if we get Tyson Barrie we can pair him with Holden and replicate the #1 d pairing for the team that finished 30th!
ILB I felt the same way until recently. W Hellberg leaving and quality back up goalies around the league not seeming all that plentiful idk anymore. Especially since the back up here will need to be capable of giving LQ a legitimate rest at times
Bite your tongue C3!
Is Stepan still a New York Ranger?
Meeting step dad at the flying puck for drinks. Will get some info
Eric why don’t you go out for drinks w Trouba’s Dad? On my tab. Thx
Better yet, Gorton’s dad. James’s tab…
Someone posted a list of UFA goalies a couple of day ago. There are several in Raanta’s price range that Allaire could work his magic on. Hopefully The Showers will take him. If not he could be part of a trade after the expansion draft.
Gorton bought out girardi when he did to give the rangers the ability to protect a dman if a trade happpened b4 today’s deadline and bc he could then protect smith if a trade didn’t happen. Doesn’t want vegas setting up a sign and trade with another club for him, doesn’t want to give another club the option to outbid the rangers by having vegas sign, and then trade him with money retained. Ala what carp mentioned vegas/rangers could do with shattenkirk. At least that’s my hunch
Lmao “Golden Showers” – that’s exactly how I referred to Bettman’s b.s. ‘Miracle Grow’ franchise earlier this season.
This day in hockey history, June 17th, 1952, Mike Milbury was born in Brighton, Massachusetts. Milbury has had a 44 year career in professional hockey as a player, coach, manager, and broadcaster.
His most memorable moment as a player is climbing the glass in New York as a Bruin and beating a Rangers fan with the fan’s own shoe. He’s known as the general manager who traded away players like Zdeno Chara, Roberto Luongo, Wade Redden, Olli Jokinen, and Tim Connolly for basically nothing, and then drafting Rick DiPietro with the #1 overall pick. He also traded Chara and the second overall pick, who became Jason Spezza, for the infamous Alexi Yashin, who he then signed to a ridiculous 10-year, $87.5-million contract. Yashin was a big disappointment and was bought out in 2007.
As for his television career…well, he seems to make outrageous statements just for the sake of flouting convention, sort of like America’s answer to Don Cherry.
Well? Did Eric get any info?
So if McPhee takes picks and prospects to protect team’s rosters his team will stink next season and he’ll have to take on bad salaries to hit the cap minimum. Like Brooksie said is this what Buttman had in mind?
Just got off a plane and was seated next to Stepan’s wife’s old college roommate’s dog trainer’s pool boy. He said Derek will be captaining the Golden Knights next season.
Happy Father’s Day to those who observe.
Kids just asked what I wanted for Father’s Day. My response was trouba and McKinnon.
Good morning Boneheads! Happy Father’s day! I have this sick feeling in my stomach that Shatner-Kirk will be a Ranger Ugh!
Good morning, boneheads!
Happy Father’s Day!
What if Vegas takes Dumba and Gorton already has a deal to get him?
Is Matt Dumba a Ranger yet?
Happy Father’s Day to all the dads!
I’d rather have Dumba-dour than Trouba-dour.
So the Rangers might lose a 4th line center, or one of two 4 th line wingers. Or possibly a back up goalie. Not bad.
If no side deal with Vegas then raanta over Lindberg fast grabner prob best case
Interesting. More teams went 8-1 than I expected.
Happy Father’s Day to all here..and Happy Father’s Day to the greatest Hockey dad to me..my NYPD Dad who took me to my 1st NYR game 57 years ago in 1960 at old MSG ..he got me hooked…thanks Dad for everything…
Sorry if this is a dumba question but what does 8-1 mean? 🙂
Happy Father’s Day all!
Don’t lose lindberg
The 8 is any combo of players
6D and 2 fwd for example
Teams are allowed to protect either 7 forwards, 3 D-men, 1 goalie, or 8 skaters and 1 goalie. In other words, if a team wants to protect more than 3 D-men, they will have to protect much less forwards than 7.
Neal and Watson not protected. I’d be all over either one of those guys even though both are wingers. Ok
My explanation was better 😉
Glass ends up in Pitt again
Good-bye Lindberg Good-bye!
Isles went 3f 5d 1 g
Yes Wick and probably wins a cup next year!
Vegas is going to take MAF. I would guess Grubagher as well. I don’t think Raanta is a sure thing for them. My money is on Lindberg. My wish is Fast.😀
Oh, I see! I kinda knew it but wasn’t sure. Thanks, kids!
NEWSFLASH: David Byrne asks the US Mint to stop making cents.
Anderson from jackets, Sheehan from wings
Blue jackets have trade in place avoid Anderson and William karlson
If Fast(h) goes to Vegas and reverts to his true name, he will be the first player in a deal to be named later later again.
Oh I’m sure. We better have one for lindberg
ZZZZZ My foot went to sleep. I think I’ll join it. Sayonara.
Why would you protect HOLDEN over Lindberg??
Grabners been a 3rd liner. At times Fast has been too. Lindberg has potential to be 3rd line as well.
not a choice. they’re in different categories. limit is 7 f and 3 dmen unless went 8 in total which makes no sense for us with mcd being protected.
There’s a new post.
