  1. THANKS, BETTMAN!

    …………………………………………..
The Vegas Golden Knights are going to come out of next week’s expansion draft with a war chest of draft picks and prospects from teams trying to steer them away from exposed players.

For that, they can thank the NHL, which named the expansion draft criteria to both to give the Knights a collection of solid players on which to build, and forced teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets into unenviable ransom payments to Vegas GM George McPhee.

From Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch, it appears a deal has been cut to make sure that the Knights stay away from forwards Alexander Wennberg and Josh Anderson, backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo and veteran defensemen Jack Johnson and David Savard:

**The Jackets are believed to be trading this year’s first-round draft pick (No. 24 overall) and a prospect (not Pierre-Luc Dubois or Sonny Milano) to Vegas for assurances that the Golden Knights will select either left wing Matt Calvert, center William Karlsson or defenseman Ryan Murray. Vegas’ acquisition of the contract of injured veteran forward David Clarkson ($5.25 million salary cap hit) may also be part of the deal.**

Wow. The least they can do is also pick up the Clarkson contract for that bounty.

A first, a prospect and Ryan Murray so George McPhee doesn’t draft Jack Johnson. What a world.

Pierre LeBrun hears that the Knights already have three first-rounders banked thanks to the expansion draft pressure.

  2. I don’t mind giving up our R1 this year. Mind you I wouldn’t trade it for a 35-year old character player or anything. But if we sneak our R1 into a deal to get a someone like Mackinnon, or use it to get someone to take Staal’s hit off the books – do it.
Conversely, any deals we make that result in us acquiring additional R1 picks should be for next year. I want no part of the back 9 of the 2017 first round.

It still steams me that the Isles got Edmonton’s 15th overall in 2015 rather than us. Griff Reinhart is middling at best. Talbot is their best goalie since Cujo. Right now we should be talking about how we can afford to trade Step because Matt Barzal is ready to come up.

  3. Some good GMs are going to make a killing with this expansion draft. Teams are panicking all over the place. If it were me, I would lose the player and move on. Giving away draft picks and other assets is just silly. I hope Gorton is there to pick the carcass.

  4. Wicky – I would rather see Holden grabbed by Vegas, we trade Step for a legit McD partner, and for the third pairing – either a mid-level swap for Mark Pysyk, or sign Cody Franson for 2 years.

McD-guy who deserves time with McD
    Skjei Guevara – Smith
    Staal – Pysyk/Franson

  5. I figure that there will be 1 more expansion in 2 years so we better be careful in handing out no move and no trade deals especially for dmen.

Word is Tobias Enstrom has done WIN a huge favour, agreed to waive his NMC to help the Jets with the expansion draft.

  6. I’ll be moved if the Rangers make a move. Gorton will do nothing unless it really lands what this cotton candy crew desperately needs!

  7. roll the dice and don’t give draft picks or otherwise to vegas to prevent them taking 1 of the 4 frequently mentioned unless they agree to take a big salary like staal in which case i’d give them our 1st pick this year. but staal is not waiving so moot point.

  8. Chykrun is the only member of the ‘yotes I’d be interested in and he’s a lefty. If they give up their two best assets from the roster and don’t get a right D man I’m going to be worried

  9. If I understand the rules “correctly” (doubtful at best), teams can still trade but only with Vegas until after the draft on Wednesday correct? So still time to make “don’t take this guy” deals.

  10. ILB I felt the same way until recently. W Hellberg leaving and quality back up goalies around the league not seeming all that plentiful idk anymore. Especially since the back up here will need to be capable of giving LQ a legitimate rest at times :/

  11. Gorton bought out girardi when he did to give the rangers the ability to protect a dman if a trade happpened b4 today’s deadline and bc he could then protect smith if a trade didn’t happen. Doesn’t want vegas setting up a sign and trade with another club for him, doesn’t want to give another club the option to outbid the rangers by having vegas sign, and then trade him with money retained. Ala what carp mentioned vegas/rangers could do with shattenkirk. At least that’s my hunch

  12. This day in hockey history, June 17th, 1952, Mike Milbury was born in Brighton, Massachusetts. Milbury has had a 44 year career in professional hockey as a player, coach, manager, and broadcaster.

His most memorable moment as a player is climbing the glass in New York as a Bruin and beating a Rangers fan with the fan’s own shoe. He’s known as the general manager who traded away players like Zdeno Chara, Roberto Luongo, Wade Redden, Olli Jokinen, and Tim Connolly for basically nothing, and then drafting Rick DiPietro with the #1 overall pick. He also traded Chara and the second overall pick, who became Jason Spezza, for the infamous Alexi Yashin, who he then signed to a ridiculous 10-year, $87.5-million contract. Yashin was a big disappointment and was bought out in 2007.

As for his television career…well, he seems to make outrageous statements just for the sake of flouting convention, sort of like America’s answer to Don Cherry.

  13. So if McPhee takes picks and prospects to protect team’s rosters his team will stink next season and he’ll have to take on bad salaries to hit the cap minimum. Like Brooksie said is this what Buttman had in mind?

  16. Teams are allowed to protect either 7 forwards, 3 D-men, 1 goalie, or 8 skaters and 1 goalie. In other words, if a team wants to protect more than 3 D-men, they will have to protect much less forwards than 7.

not a choice. they’re in different categories. limit is 7 f and 3 dmen unless went 8 in total which makes no sense for us with mcd being protected.
