Yesterday was a pretty big day in the course of the Rangers franchise. The repercussions of the activity yesterday will be felt as early as next year, but will reverberate through the team for the next half decade.
It started in the early afternoon when longtime Ranger and de facto 1st line center Derek Stepan was traded to Arizone, together with popular backup goaltender Annti Raanta, for the 7th overall pick and 2014 first round selection (14th overall), Anthony DeAngelo.
The move was largely cashing out on Derek Stepan’s large and long contract (6.5×4 remaining) before his full no trade clause kicked in on July 1. When he signed it, he appeared to be on a trajectory that would be well worth the dollars. However, in the two years that followed, he stayed relatively flat. Last year he even seemed to regress a bit. So the time was right to move him, as I and many others had advocated from even before the Rangers were eliminated from the playoffs. Losing Raanta will prove unpopular if Lundqvist struggles again this season, but I expect us to have a solid backup in place before the season begins, either by free agency or trade.
DeAngelo is a talented but temperamental 21 year old, right handed defenseman, known for his offensive skills, particularly his ability to quarterback a powerplay. Respected statistician Tyler Dellow (@dellowhockey) noted that in the small sample that was available, Arizona’s powerplay was markedly better with DeAngelo on it. However, given his attitude problems, his defensive play, and the manner in which AV deployed the relatively more defensively responsible Brady Skjei, my gut feeling is we do not see many DeAngelo suit up for many NHL games.
To me, determining the outcome of the trade depended on two things: 1) what we do with the 7th overall pick; and 2) what we do with the cap space. Last night, we found out what they would do with the pick. At 7th overall, the Rangers took what is considered by all draft media outlets as a reach in center Lias Anderson from HV71 in Sweden. The highest I saw Anderson ranked was 11 by Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek. The lowest I saw him ranked was 25 by ISS. Most ranking had him somewhere around 15. Meanwhile, Gabe Vilardi, who was ranked by most draft services between 3-5, with the only outlier being The Draft Analyst that had him at 11.
Reading the projections on Anderson, boy, he sure sounds like a Manny Malhotra esque pick, coincidentally also in the 7th spot overall. Good two way center, not particularly good offensively. His style of play sounds like a blend between Malhotra and Lauri Korpikoski. It just seems like if they were really keen on him, they could have traded down. Anderson, for his part, has signed a two year extension with HV71 and is planning on reporting there for at least next season.
The first part of the trade seems like it was likely a mistake (not quite McIlrath bad since this guy still projects to be a NHL player), so now we have to wait and see what the Rangers do with the cap flexibility. They will need to resign Zibanejad and Fast, while adding at least one more defenseman (possibly two), two bottom six forwards (at least one of which needs to be a center), and a backup goaltender.
The Rangers also selected Filip Chytil with the 21st pick. Most outlets had him as a late first/early second rounder. This pick doesn’t bother me as much, but I sure would have preferred Eli Tolvinen, who is a dynamic scorer. I also would have preferred Klim Kostin, Kailer Yamamoto, and Ryan Poehling.
Barring any trades, Rangers don’t pick again until the fourth round. Last year, my depth pick was Sean Day, who we grabbed in the third. This year, it’s Dylan Samberg, but I think he probably gets taken in the second given the recent rise in his draft stock. I honestly like a lot of guys still on the board, which is why I’m disappointed that they didn’t trade down from 7 if they were intent on Anderson.

We’ll they sure wanted this Anderson kid. I hesitate to hammer them for this as this draft seemed to be a crapshoot. Who knows I’d a trade down would have resulted in their getting this kid? If they took a guy at 7 that a scout had rated at 11, oh well. However, this does smell a bit like drafting for need over BPA, which has not worked out for them in the past. The more I think about the trade, the more I think that Stepan was not all that valued around the league. You could not flip him for Justin Faulk? Sami Vatanen? Conor Murphy and a pick? Clearly the Rangers wanted this Anderson kid and valued the #7 quite highly. The next chapter is who they spend the $ on that they now have available.

Having time to sleep on it, I’m satisfied with the picks. I liked the players regardless – had an issue with the value.
But anyway – they clearly wanted to make a move up to 3 for Makar or the Finn. When it didn’t happen, they went center. It’s possible that they looked at the remaining centers and thought that of Middlestadt (underwhelming to me), Rasmussen (huge but maybe concerned he’s Brian Boyle), Villardi and Andersson…that Lias is the guy they thought would be the best. And in a draft where they really hammered home the fact that picks 5-15 were interchangeable…they chose to take a little stretch, rather than trade down and hope nobody else took a stretch.
Malhotra-Korpikoski isn’t an accurate comparison from what I’m reading and watching. His scouting report reads Toews to me. I don’t see a deficiency in his game. Im not saying he’s Toews, but if this guy works out, he’s our second-line center for 12 years. And he’s a safe bet.
The other kid? His scouting report reads like fan fiction. He has TWO cons – he’s “lanky”at 6’2 190 (but he’s 17) and he was supposed to be a high second rounder. That’s it. They looked at the guys available and liked this one.
Too much uncertainty at 7 to trade down and risk missing the guy they liked. At 21 they could’ve wiggled down a few slots, picked up a 2nd or 3rd, and still got the guy.

To avoid Shattenkirk based on this DeAngelo kid would be to consider him top pair potential. I don’t think it’s so much about a PP qb right now as much as it is about finding a top pairing Dman. Hard to imagine they see this kid as that.

Step is certainly overpaid, but is signed only through age 30. Ergo, it’s not so much a debilitating long-term contract as it is something else, too, which motivated Gorton to activate the jettison button. For an Alternate Captain and an inexpensive proven goalie, we didn’t get anything nailed and certain, only hope.

The NYR held on to Step for too long, though out of necessity for this past year’s “run.” Hard to get top dollar when the guy has a NMC and the buyer is potentially going to be locked in. AZ probably figures Step would be willing to waive it to get out of there if it came to that.
Lisa was not an outlandish reach. Guess they felt he would not be there at 21 and they had no interest in any of the many defenders (still surprised at that). If so, they had to get the guy they wanted at 7 even if it was a little rich. Check back in 2021 to know if passing up those guys for Lisa was the right move.

I look at other teams in there division and except for the pens, who has been more successful in the past 5-7 years. The only teams winning cups in this time frame had 2 lotery pick generational players. The only way the rangers could get that is to be the worse team in the league for a few years and still hope one of these generational players are in the draft and you know playing in New York city it will never happen. I also don’t understand how anybody can know how these picks will turn out because you don’t know just typical something to complain about and can we at least wait until the rangers off season is done before we complain that the rangers are going to be a bad team.

At this point, I am fine with them rebuilding and I was happy to hear Gorton call it a rebuild on the fly. I was happy to hear it because it is what they need to do. I have no problem with their moving players for futures. The current group had a 4-5 year run. They got close but did not get it done. And now the window is closing. They have to prepare now doe the next wave of talent and rebuild a feeder system that is barren. I expect that they will be worse this season, and on the bubble for a playoff spot. IMO, the next time the Rangers raise the cup Igor Shestyerkin will be in their net. Fact is………they got what Derek Stepan was worth to the rest of the NHL. An honest player, a character guy and a yearly 50 point producer for $6.5MM per. These contracts were signed when clubs assumed that the cap would grow faster than it has. They are now albatrosses. Here’s hoping that the Rangers don’t go on a typical Rangers signing binge over the Summer.

I agree completely. But there is not a #1 out there in free agency unless Jumbo Shrimp comes in to play with his buddy Nash for a couple years. And that is not without risks. Nate Thompson would be a 4th line center candidate, as there does not appear to be anyone in their system to step in there. They also still have to address the D. Here’s hoping that Lindy Ruff can actually develop defensemen and that AV gives him the freedom to do so. From the little we have heard about DeAngelo and our witnessing the way AV handled Skjei, DeAngel0 looks exactly like the kind of player AV banishes to the bench or Prucha-land.

If you’re trading Nash now or soon, then rebuild, because you have no shot. Which is fine. The Rangers can use their cap space as an asset, eat a lot of Nash’s cap hit this coming season, which would sweeten the pot and enlarge the return from a contender. Trade Nash to a good team and eat $4M or $5M, maybe you can bring back a first rounder plus. I don’t think it would be a terrible move. And honestly, if Shattenkirk is the play – he’s not the right partner for McDonagh. We’d waste McD’s offensive instincts because he’d be the one hanging back a bit.
But I’m in the small minority of people who would be okay with Shattenkirk – IF he was willing to go less term. Give him 7.5m per for 4 years. Then – play Skjei on right with McD and Shattenkirk with smith (who i would give $4m per for 3). Staal and DeAngelo on 3rd. Holden in the pressbox.

I agree with Wicky, it’s about winning the Cup, not making the Dolan’s playoff money. The playoff run is nice, but not when you always come up short. I thought the Rangers should definitely trade Stephan and can’t disagree about trading Raanta, given the fact that he will be leaving next year. My problem is the return they received. They should have gotten Murphy not the head case we received. Should have also received two Picks, #7 and a 2nd or 3rd rounder). The poor trade was compounded with, IMO, a poor choice at #7. They should have gotten much more of a difference maker at #7, not another jasper Fast. Both players were rated much lower than where the Rangers picked them. Could have traded down to get them and gotten more picks. Isles were able to get a first and 2 seconds for Hamonic so we should have gotten more for a 2nd possible first line center and an excellent backup/ potential starting goalie.

So we are a lottery team for buying out G, losing a 4th line center, and trading away the 1C that everybody says is at best a 2C? In that case, why buy out G this year instead of waiting one more when the hit is less since DeAngermangement is clearly not viewed as comparable to G?
Assuming mgt. finds at least another 2C (Step replacement) we are no worse than last year. Oscar was a nice player but is easily replaced. Y’all hated G so how much worse can the new guy be? Are the current kids (THE, Hated, Dazed, Zib, Buch) going to go backwards? Have to expect improvement as a group even if not uniform.
Unless they continue the dump by moving Nash/Zuc/HL for young ones or picks, I see this team making the playoffs again and out in a round or two. They may be unlikely to really challenge for another year or two, but its not a lotto team. Hopefully they hold onto the cap wad for next summer when there will be more UFAs – no Kirk!

I don’t think they’re planning on dumping anyone or not competing next year. There are moves that can be made between now and then. Nash is on the last year of his deal which may mean a few different things the mot important of which is more cap room next season.
And I don’t know what they plan on doing w Smith but I’m still expecting him re-signed. Whether that gets done before July 1 idk.
But Eric is right. Team priority is getting a top pair defender before all else

Also want to mention- Very happy with the addition of Ruff, I think it’s smart to have the experience. I had said a year ago that maybe trying to get a guy like Ron Wilson or similar as an assistant coach would be a good play. Just find it ironic that Dallas had one of the worst defenses in the league last year (even if injuries and depth played a role)
And as for Trouba, I am beginning to doubt that the Rangers have anything Winnipeg would want badly enough to part with a player that’s quite a commodity in this league.

What’s with the Kovalchuk talk btw? With the young talent this team has on the wing and the players that as of now are headed for UFA status next season, I don’t know if I buy into this “must have game changer” crap. 34 year old, didn’t like a lot of things about his game or his attitude when he was in the NHL.

Gorton’s comment that this is a rebuild on the fly tells me he is not going all out on spending this summer. He still may be looking at a #1 RD but probably no one we would expect. By lottery team that means any team not in the playoffs. I believe there will be regression for Rangers for a few reasons and some other teams will get a few more points. Gorton was a highly-regarded GM-of-the-future as Sather’d understudy. Boston was very interested in him, but we didn’t allow an interview. I’m sure other teams were keeping tabs as well. So that tells me that when he got offered the Rangers job, if there were even a possibility that Sather had the last word, he would’ve told them to take a hike.
Sather sticks around because he’s a rink rat, gets paid millions to suck on an old cigar, and the amount of effs Dolan gives about the Rangers is directly tied to “the hall of famer Team President that I’m friends with.”
I’m sure he gets to go to all the meetings, nods his head, makes some off-color jokes, and keeps wondering why Lou Nanne isn’t calling him back.
What I’m trying to say is – what has two thumbs and is not at all concerned about Glen sather’s indluence? This guy.

If they’d rather go the 3C route – I bet you can find a team that feels that their perfectly-effective $3M center is a bit too pricey for their blood, and might take a cheap serviceable player like Holden in a semi-pure cap space deal scenario. Chicago for instance – how about Marcus Krüger? I know Hossa got the gunk and Hjalmarsson was moved, but they’re always looking for a way to get out from under a contract. They’re also a bit light on defense. I know Vegas said they’d take him on, just for salary, but what if they don’t have to? Holden for Kruger straight up.

James – I don’t mind Shattenkirk’ game at all. for that level of offense from a dman, you pay a price in the defensive aspect of the game – so he’s need a partner who could cover a bit more. McD could do it, but then you waste HIS offense. Staal isn’t ideal at this stage. Smith would be great. But then Skjei would move to the right, but if he played with McDonagh, that’s not a bad idea.
So I like Shattenkirk, but he’s not the McD partner answer. But he does fit a big need.
Imagine DeAngelo learning how to power play from Shattenkirk?
If only we could give Shat a little more in salary and less in term.

Edmonton could go McDavid-RNH-Hayes. Have skjei RFA controlled for a bunch of years, and add either Kreider or miller to their winger stable.
Rangers get the center you need, abiet at a huge cost.
I won’t overpay tremendously to get the 1st pair d, think we can put together a dynamic 1-6 that will negate the need for that guy. But I’ll pay for the center. the 23 million counts 16 guys (17 less klein) . so say zika at 5 million takes that full amount off for starters. 6 more guys at 1 million each in some cases more like smith would be 4 million.

Tomb –
$5m – Zika
$2m – Fast
$4m – Smith
That leaves us $12M for a 2/3C center, 4c, 4LW, depth winger, a top-pairing caliber D, and a backup goalie.
Boo Nieves should be our 4C. The price is right and it’s his job to lose. ~$1m
Backup goalie will probably be someone we bring in on the cheap. ~$1M
2/3C center – I mentioned earlier that I would target Marcus Kruger, trading Nick Holden. $3m – $1.6m = $1.4M
LW4 – Lauri Korpikoski can be had for $800k easy. You could do worse on line 4.
Depth winger – For arguments sake, you can bring back Tanner Glass for ~$800k. You could also hope someone like Kovacs or Tambellini is ready to make the jump. Hrivik would’ve fit. I would PREFER to pay a 13th forward as close to the minimum as possible. Let’s say Unnamed prospect at $600k.
So without adding a top dman, we just spent $4.8m of our remaining $12m. Leaving $7.2m for the aforementioned first-pair defenseman.
We certainly have enough for Shattenkirk if we wanted.

Fast will most likely miss first month so we either go with 22 man roster or 23 in which case we count 24 contracts toward cap for that period. Long term injury is pretty convoluted. Also teams generally try to keep under cap by at least 1 million since when others get hurt they count and their replacement counts too.
On the other side a puempel or deangelo/kampfer could be sent down which adds to the cap room.

At deadline, Rangers qualify RFA winger Nicklas Jensen, but not Brandon Pirri, Adam Clendening, or “Buffalo Killer” Mackenzie Skapski.

The Rangers qualified Jensen, but not the other 3 guys. I’m a little confused ( I’m 80 after all), Jensen could barely get a sniff in a season in a half. Does this mean he’s good, and AV refused to use him, or does this mean Gorton doesn’t know what he is doing.

Even minus Stepan, we have a pretty deep Top-9 of (in no particular order) Nash, Kreider, Zika, Hayes, Miller, Zuccarello, Vesey, Buchnevich, and Grabner. If a move needs to be made to get a Trouba-type, we could weather the storm if Kreider absolutely needed to be available. Miller probably becomes a bit more valuable internally due to our sudden lack of center depth and his ability to shift back to said position.
Good thing Edmonton set the market of middling right-shot defensemen at Taylor Hall.

or they’re keeping jensen for hartford figuring he’ll pass through waivers.

Jensen is a question mark, but he has a pedigree as a former first rounder. Pirri – we know who he is. Clendening doesn’t have a fan in AV. Skapski on borrowed time since we have better goalie prospects ahead of him.
I could see Jensen challenging Its-Hard-Out-Here-For-A-Puempel for a 4th line or utility role.

I wonder what Veseys $ 2,850,000 in potential performance bonuses relate to.

Zika, Couch both qualified. Not Skapski, Gerund (the Miracle Met), Pirri, Hrivik.
Hearing Hrivik asked to be set free. And for those discussing, I think they like Jensen but thought he wasn’t quite ready last season. doesn’t mean he will be ready this season.

Hearing it’s very unlikely Thornton comes to NY because A) he’s older than dirt, B) he just had ACL and MCL tears, C) he wants to stay in SJ, D) He wants three years minimum, E) he doesn’t seem interested in New York.
also, F) the Rangers aren’t very keen on doing that.
But if he did come for one year, or two (money would be irrelevant) he’d be their No. 1 center by a mile.

Which goalie will Gorton target? Chad Johnson, Darcy Kuemper, Mike Condon, Anders Nilsson, Jonas Enroth, Bernier, Mason?
Might it be worth trading for one of these guys’ rights before July 1? I’m sure they have a couple guys in mind. What could it cost? A low draft pick?

I’m on record for Bernier, best mask in the game!

Bernier Condon or Nilsson would do. I think working w Allaire would elevate any of their games

I saw that Wick. Can’t argue about the mask!
Got to believe that Allaire’s going to have a lot of input on this decision and he’s also a huge incentive for all of these guys to come here.

Wick – Pirti has great mitts but cannot skate, amazing how long he has been in the league since he, ya know, can’t skate.

Hrivik probably just elected to become group 6 FA without giving them a choice to qualify him. I’m a little surprised about Clendening. Still 24, wouldn’t cost them much to retain his rights.

Instead of constantly looking elsewhere for help, it’s freaking high time this organization starts looking at how to maximize the current roster. I mean there is skill on that ice but it is never maximized. Is that the so-called ‘system’ or is that just poor coaching or what? AV needs to figure that out real quick because he is NOT getting the best out of this roster. Too much is left in the tank too often. Crack the whip starting now.

It most certainly is not a championship roster, Ohio. Much less so in the last week.

I agree with Carp. It’s lacking high end talent and did so the last few years. Other key players got hurt or old too.

I like that DeAngelo has an edge, he’s also young (and stupid) and fills a need. He could easily slot 3rd pair and PP specialist. The key now to this off-season is what happens next.

I don’t mind Jumbo Shrimp as a fill-in for a year (or two) if they think Andersson is the future 1/2C or that over the course of the next season or two Hayes or MikaZ (or maybe even MillerTime) figure out how to become 1C. But if paying Bubba Gump Thornton procludes us from signing/trading for a younger long-term option or a top righty D then its a “No” from me.
For me the priority order would be:
Top pair Righty D – i think we’ll get Shatty
Top 6 center – i think we’ll go for Duchene or MacKinnon or maybe Galchenyuk
Backup goalie – Anders Nilsson
Bottom 6 role types we have on the farm, Boo Nieves, Nicklas Jensen and will come a lot cheaper than a vet 4th liner.
It really is going to be an interesting week. When its over we’ll see what Gorton can achieve. At the moment we have a worse team than a week ago, but the cap space to make it much much better.

Alex and Carp, yes this is currently not a championship roster but we are not a rebuild away either. We need maybe 2 or 3 pieces. BUT, if the coaches can get more out of these players then they are even closer than that. (Either through better PP, better lines, better compete level, etc) Too often the entire team played as if there would be zero consequences if they just stopped competing, so they seemingly did just that. The team did not seem unified or vested in the outcome at all. That’s on the coach IMO, and I like AV but he’s too damn easy on these guys.
