Good morning, boneheads!
According to CapFriendly the Rangers have 17 players under contract. That includes 9 forwards ( counting Puempel), 7 D-men ( including Klein, Deangelo, and Kampfer), and one goaltender. Assuming Klein does retire, they’ll have close to $23M to complete the roster. A couple of things to consider. One, there is a very high chance we will face another lockout after 2019-2020 season. Two, this year the maximum contract that could be stashed in the AHL has been bumped to $1.025M
First, let’s look at their own restricted Free Agents, Mika Zibanejad and Jesper Fast. Both are important players, and both will be re-signed ( you’re welcome, Coos 😃)
Zibanejad is arbitration eligible, and will probably file, but he doesn’t have a strong case because of his injury last season. He will become a UFA in 2 years. So the question is, is it better for him to take 2 year bridge and face uncertainty because of the lockout in 1 year after his contract expires, or does he sacrifice some money, and goes long term with bonuses laden contract to protect him from lockout? I think Gorton, and this organization, may benefit from that scenario. I believe long term at $4.1-4.5M should get it done. 5-6 years?
Fast is eligible for arbitration too, and even though he is a year older than Zibanejad, is going to become a UFA within the same 2 year frame. Fast is facing the same dilemma. I believe 4 year deal at around $1.6-1.95M should get this one done too.
The last one of their own is Smith. I believe they should really try and sign him for many reasons, most important being that NY seems to be a good fit. But if he wants much more than $4.5M per year ( again, bonuses laden) for 4 years, I’d walk away. After that they’ll still have around $12M to spend, and a few important positions to fill. Would that be enough?
Those 3 are must designs. Who else they sign is the pressing issue.

You can bet said lockout will involve a new method of buying out players contracts with fewer cap penalties because those GM’s still haven’t learned not to give them out to the over 30 crowd…..and players will want lower escrow. I would’ve though that the impending lockout means that richer teams (like the Rangers) could front-load a Shattenkirk contract and protect themselves from an expensive buyout should he not perform as expected?
56 points for Shatty last year, when was the last time we had anyone get that close? Last year we had McD and Skjei with 42 and 39. Before that in recent years Yandle got 49, McD got 43, Del Zaster 41, Roszival! 38. We have to go back 16 seasons to Brian Leetch’s 55 to get close, and 17 seasons when he was our leading scorer with 79 to beat it (we didnt reach the playoffs btw)

Staal – Franson
Smith – DeAngelo

Next lockout hopefully they reduce the 2/3 buyout to 1/2. won’t go lower than that as small market teams want the others punished for bad decisions. plus the players won’t want it to go lower than 1/2.
biggest part of lockout will be money grab of course. instead of 50/50 figure owners share goes to 52 or 55. plus they will restrict what is considered part of the pie.
lockout long enough and they will get their way.

Franson is not a good skater, struggles with the first pass, and does not kill penalties. Add in his O game has been deteriorating every season.
Let’s say they sign him for two years at 2 mill per. Girardi buy out is 2.6 this year, and 3.6 next. So that’s Franson for 4.6 this year, and 5.6 next. I’d have rather kept Girardi.

There really doesn’t have to be a lockout. The new CBA just has to allow for buyouts with no cap hit. I forget what they call them. They always have in the past. when putting together the Rangers free agent shopping list don’t forget they need to sign two goalies – one to back up Hank and the other to share time in Hartford. Other than Shestyorkin and the two college goalies (Huska and Wall), the only other two under contract are Halvorson and Chris Nell. Even if they decided to bring Skapski back, the organ-eye-zation needs a veteranish type in Hartford with Hellberg gone.
As some have cautioned, Hanzal is as brittle as a Mets pitcher so that has to be factored into the equation. Plus, he could very easily turn into another Bobby Holik if the Rangers are going to lean on him to provide offense as a top six forward for anything more than a game or two.
Not sure if we can (or should) afford Stone. I must have fallen asleep on him in terms of salary because I didn’t realize he made $4 million last year and you have to figure bidding is going to start at $5 million now.

So with McD, Smith, Skjei, Staal and Holden all signed for next year, Beverly DeAngelo in the mix U think they may go with that as their top 6… and Bereglazov or Day supposedly ready to challenge for a spot this year? I’d ship Holden off to Narnia if Bereglazov is ready. Supposedly a real solid shut down defenseman. Could use one of those around here.

Carp Bonino anchors the depth chart so to speak. 1) you’re going to have to pay him like a second line center and he’s not one. 2) he’s a 30-40 point guy at best. That makes Zibanejad and Hayes the 1 and 2 centers on the team. I for one am not interested in that lack of depth down the middle. Cullen I’d welcome back as a 4th line guy. God knows we could use a warm body capable of winning a faceoff.

I like Bonino as a third-liner … but I agree, 92-13 as 1C and 2C is a problem. I thought 21-93 as a 1C and 2C was a problem. … but if they have no other way of getting a 1 or 2, I’d go Bonino as a 3.

Then again there isn’t a first line center coming anytime soon unless there’s some trade we do not know about. Maybe 9 first round picks 2 prospects and 2nd rounders in 20,21,22,23,24,25,26 and 27 for Duchene. Nah, no way Sakic goes for that. Clearly not enough coming back his way….(s)

You’re right Carp. And if that’s the case then I guess it is what it is and they’ll just take that big step back. Very curious to see what they get out of Zibanejad this season. Obviously when a player breaks his leg in December he earns the benefit of the doubt. I’m hoping we see a bit of a production spike from him. Hayes played like the first line center of this team for the first two months of the season. But if I know Hayes I’ll be yelling at him for hanging onto the puck for too long before preseason is over so…

Describe right price for bonino.
I, for one, do not think he is a 40 goal guy or even close to it. He might be a 40 point guy in a perfect situation (like on a line with Kessel and a team where 2 other centres et a lot of attention), but he isn’t very good on faceoffs and is going to cost more than he’s worth.

I think Nilsson is going to be the back up of choice. gets to work under Allaire, gets to stay in NY and tandem with fellow countryman Hanka Hanka.

I think there are at least a couple of teams that would be willing to match contract terms, Carp. Especially with most teams in need of an elite center on their roster. I’d like to think that the potential to win a Championship may come into play for him as well. Islanders have been spinning their tires for a while.

Thornton would be an over 35 contract so any buyout would count anyway. That’s why it’s dangerous to sign them for more than 1 year. If they retire it counts anyway.

James-I believe Friedman is projecting Nilsson goes to Vancouver. I’m getting nervous. The back up goalie should be decided by Saturday.

LOL Eric. Boy, those Flyers. They certainly are consistent when it comes to the quality of goaltender they keep on the frontlines of that organization!!

Bernier (mask) is my first choice, Nilsson 2nd…then I’m not sure, rumour has it Hammond was one season wonder.
Going to have to trade for top end talent, that simple. Have to give to get.
Personally I sign stone as free agent and use skjeL and a forward to upgrade top line talent/centre.

A man goes into a restaurant. You listenin’? A man goes into a restaurant. He sits down, he’s havin’ a bowl of soup. He says to the waiter; “Waiter, come taste the soup.” Waiter says; “Is there something wrong with the soup?” He says; “Taste the soup.” He says; “Is there something wrong with the soup? Is the soup too hot?” He says; “Will you taste the soup?”, “What’s wrong is the soup to cold?”, “Will you just taste the soup?”, “All right, I’ll taste the soup. Where’s the spoon?”, “Ah-ha!”

Havin watched Bernier this year out here in CA, I would stay away. Dude was good for half the season on a good defensive team………much better defensively than the Rangers. But just like he did in LA and TOR, he folds under pressure as he did in game 6 of the Ducks-Preds series. Average goaltending in that game and they play 7. Bernier was brutal. I would sign up for Nilsson. Get him to the goalie whisperer and he can be a good fill in for Shampoo Boy.

I think Nilsson is going to Vancouver. Ocho was in the mix but he’s apparently staying a Baby Buffalo. (I miss Orr).
Kinkaid signed with NJ. Lack traded to CAL. Rangers running out of options. It might be Bernier.

I know. It seems ridiculous. Admittedly I don’t know how good or bad Murphy played, but seems like a possible fit here. Low cost.

In 2009-10 the Rangers were just starting to become relevant again. A young Henrik Lundqvist played in 73 games. Can’t remember if Valiquette got hurt or his game just fell apart, but the Rangers had no solution to a back up and it killed them. Alex Auld, Chad Johnson and Matt Zaba (?) couldn’t pick up the slack. They finished the season on a bit of a hot streak and missed the playoffs when they lost to the Flyers in that infamous shootout. Olli Jokenen failed to convert on the final attempt.
Now, when Hank is 35, it’s more important than ever that they get a good replacement for Raanta. Someone they could trust to carry the load if Hank gets hurt or loses his edge for a week or so. Trade a mid-level or low pick and sign somebody.
If you switched Raanta and Eddie Lack last season, the Rangers might not have made the playoffs and maybe Carolina does.
