NHL free agency opens at noon. Someone get Eric a Life Alert necklace. “HELP, the Rangers signed Nick Bonino to a 5 million a year contract and I can’t get up!”
The Rangers have about $18.5 million in cap space (assuming Klein retires) and have to add the following contracts:
- Re-sign Zibanejad and Fast
- Backup goaltender
- At least one defenseman, should be two, but could go up to three if Klein retires.
- Fourth line center
- Either a first line center, top six winger, or third line center, depending on how the team wants to deploy Zibanejad, Hayes, and Miller.
Some names that the Rangers have been linked to leading up to free agency are as follows:
- Kevin Shattenkirk (sounds unlikely)
- Nick Bonino (sounds likely)
- Joe Thornton (sounds possible)
- Patrick Marleau (sounds possible)
- Ondrej Pavelec (sounds likely)
In an ideal scenario, I would offer sheet Parayko at the top end of the Two firsts, a second, and a third round pick love of the RFA compensation scale. I think he’s an absolute stud. But of course, no one ever offer sheets anyone so it’s just a pipe dream.
So what would I like to see this year? The more I think about it, the more I want to sign Thornton and Marleau, while staying away from guys like Bonino and Hanzal. The idea is to retool rather than rebuild. Thornton and Marleau allow our younger players to continue to develop in lower line roles while keeping us competitive. Because of his likely contract, I would avoid Bonino like the plague. Hanzal would be the next Bobby Holik, except he would be a worse player in a hard salary cap.
I’d probably be out on Shattenkirk, not because of him as a player, or because I’d be worried about his contract in a vacuum (considering we will likely have an amnesty buyout to use after year four), but because signing him will prevent us from adding the rest of the pieces I would want to add.
We do, however, still need to add at least one right handed defenseman. I’d suggest trying to go short term on a guy like Cody Franson but that may be unrealistic. If all else fails I’d go very short term on Dennis Wideman or, if he doesn’t retire, Mark Streit. Outside of that, it is going to be ugly, which brings me back to Shattenkirk. We might be better off just biting the bullet and buying him out after year four. No matter what, we aren’t going to be happy, unless Shattenkirk takes an enormous discount to come to NY, which is very unlikely.
Some depth targets that I’m interested in are Mikhail Grigorenko (about whom I’ve read a lot of good things), Alex Chiasson, Nail Yakupov, Alex Burmistrov, Matt Cullen and Brett Connolly. Depending on other moves, I would potentially be interested in Radim Vrbata, Sam Gagner. I’d also be interested in Brian Boyle (aka BRAN BOLE), but I think there’s no way he comes back to NY with AV as the coach.
For backup goaltender, I’d run, not walk, away from Pavelec. He is not an NHL goaltender. I’d rather sign an unknown like JF Berube than sign a known terrible goaltender like Pavelec or Niemi. Ultimately, I think the best bet for a backup goaltender (since the worthwhile UFA targets all seem to be accounted for going elsewhere), would be to trade for one. Carter Hutton, Alex Stalock, Aaron Dell, Peter Mrazek (at 50% retained salary), Louis Domingue, or Jusse Saros are some options there.
***UPDATE*** As per Bob McKenzie, Pavelec to the Rangers is a done deal. It’s not even noon and they’ve already made a huge mistake. As Dan Rosen points out, they will need 10-15 wins from their backup. Pavelec isn’t even good for 15 wins in the AHL. Someone check on Eric.
See you all on the other side.

I’m VERY happy for Girardi that he’s obviously going to land on his feet and make out very well. But I would’ve bet my house that he was in line for a $1m deal somewhere to be a 6/7.
So…he lines up with Braydon Coburn? Those two will be a combined minus-800 on the road.

Could never wish ill on Girardi. Wish he was not going to Squirrely Bowman land though. I have developed a strong dislike for the Tampa franchise. I would sign up for the Thornton/Marleau to brioche the gap, and I would sign up for Cullen to be 4th line C. Problem with that is AV would have him playing top 6 in no time.

Same for Hainsey – a guy I wouldn’t take for $925k. Most backup goalies going in the mid-to-high 2’s. Hanzal almost hitting 5. 36-year old Justin Williams the same. Gagner, Kulikov.
But agreed – inflation. Combo that with a weak crop…oof.

Assuming Holden gone, 6 million divied up between Ziba and Fast, Puemple on team and last 2 forwards/d-man are low-end (sub-million) salary, Rangers now have about 4.5-5.5 million in cap space. No cap room for T/M.
Holden traded for lower end 3rd/4th line transitional C? Target a salary dump. Possibility or no? Leaves one center spot open and no, no ones getting a top line center for what’s left so going into this season with Ziba no. 1 and Hayes/Miller/? at 2/3 with Andersson longshot for 3.
My opinion.

Before we anoint skjeL the next “great” d man, let’s make sure he isn’t del zotto v2.0. He put up offencive numbers but had d zone issues a lot in the regular season (just like del zotto in his first full ranger season).
No one is saying, including me, he is a terrible player or won’t be a very solid NHL d man in a couple of years, but not a single reason to not include him in a deal that makes the team better in an area of need. Team is good to go with left handed d men with or without skjeL.
Sell high and he is due for a new contract next year as well.

Skjei’s offense was surprising to me. He’s a good puck mover, but I wouldn’t Be surprised if he never approaches 40 points ever again. He’s a good modern two-way guy who’ll net you 30 points on the 2nd pair.

Putting aside the hole on defense you end up with if you trade Skjei for Duchene, Matt is on the final year of a contract that has an AAV of $6 million. So unless you are going to go to about $8 million or so on a longish term deal, then you are trading Skjei for one year of Duchene.
Skjei for Barrie doesn’t make much sense either unless you are hellbent on getting a righty d-man. Barrie has three years at $5.5 million and Skjei gets a new deal after making $925,000. No reason to eat up the cap space for a smaller player who may or may not be better defensively all because he shoots right-handed.

If we were out on Shattenkirk, and Sakic offered us Barrie for Skjei straight up – I’d listen. And it would be a tough one…and I’d probably do it tbh.

Unlike DelZ, Skjei is not having his chain yanked by Torts and Sather (yet). You all could be right and he’s a flash in the pan and never matures as a defender. Respectfully, if you think having staal, smith, Holden, skjeL, mcdonut, day, graves for the next 4 years is logical, so be it. No reason to sign shattenkirk at all and deangelo, ruannen, berezgalov, poink etc are all pretty much ahl roster fillers only.

Well if theyre holding onto Holden then the agenda now should be considering the buyout of Staal or trying to trade him for a bag of pucks. Gotta think that they’ll need between 6-7 for RFA purposes and then still have to find a center if not two

Beezle – I think Skjei is going to be an excellent defender. I just don’t think his offensive game is going to be a consistent thing. Not that it needs to be – he’s just not that guy. The point is that IMHO you hold onto 23 y/o’s who haven’t reached their full potential yet. Especially when they’re making hardly any salary at all. You trade 30 year old injury prone dmen that have lost a step and make 5.7 million dollars a year.

I believe Berezgalov is going to be a top 6 shut down type defenseman in this league. He and Day are certainly going to make a push if not this year than next. that’s why I’m not really concerned about 7th dmen. I think Staal and Holden should be out of the picture. You’ve then rebuilt the entire blueline from the core team with the exception of the captain. The elimination of Staal and Nash from this team brings you nearly 14 million dollars. that’ s enough for a top center and a top 3 RW that’s younger and healthier.

Rangers (Gorton) plays it pretty close to the vest. They weren’t in on Hayes or Vesey, but, they wound up here. Tipping your hand only helps the other players. Still have hole(s) to fill at center. I doubt Paul Carey is the answer. He’ll have to pull another Grabner out of the hat unless they are counting on Anderson to make the team. BTW no one is leaving money on the table to play for the Knicks.

If they move miller to centre, I would guess it is 3C? With z pack 1 and hayes 2? As it sits right this second, then they need a 4C unless it’s andersson.

Wick, it always depends on what you’re getting back in return. I’m not saying that he should be untouchable just not the top asset I’d be trying to move. Let’s see what their plan is beyond the Paul Carey signing

Tank. That’s the answer.

If Miller moves to C you’re instantly deconstructing their best line from last year. Unless Vesey slides into Millers spot on Hayes’ LW with Grabner on the other side. I guess Miller would center Nash

I couldn’t agree more. It absolutely depends on the return. You certainly do not trade him for a centre like moops or a RD like clendening.
Quite honestly, the fact that we have to bring up “it depends on the return” (should be pretty freaking obvious to everyone that it depends on the return) is pretty sad.

Shatn’kirk deal is a good one, no doubt (particularly on a background of others), addresses the needs of team and he sounded genuine constantly and often talking about his passion for Rangers. It counts. What else to wish?
I have a feeling that Anderson will make a team coming season and be trusted to center 4th line to begin with.
…it’s not over yet and I’m not sharing sentiment that Rangers will tank (total bull…) or not making PO.
There is no bona fide 1st line center on the team and on the market, so, it is up to AV and teamwork to bypass obstacle and it is totally doable. Hope dies last.

The kid wanted to play for the Rangers. He’s playing for them. Pretty impressive. I was against them going hard after him, but primarily for his potential contract. Sounds like he went hard after them. He’s a pretty good player, and he’s probably underrated defensively. You can move the puck, you can defend.

Wicky, yes. If Zibanejad or Fast file for arbitration, NY will have another 48 hr buyout window starting 3 days after the case is either settled, or a player receives an award.

They have 5 young rfa’s next year and the only major contract coming off the books would be Nash. Girardi cap hit goes up by a million, Staal buyout this year would leave another 2.5 million in dead cap space next year so even with a elc contract replacing him we would only save 2 milion on the contract. Plus the next year his dead cap space would increase by a million and his cap would remain on the books for 8 years (depending on lockout). It would be an absolute killer to buy him out this year.

see how he describes stepan
“Kevin Shattenkirk, defense, signs four years, $6.65 million per year, New York Rangers
The Rangers shed themselves of aging veterans Dan Girardi (buyout) and Derek Stepan (trade) and then obtained the top free agent defenseman at a manageable cap hit and even more manageable term. Throw in a couple of young prospects and backup netminder Ondrej Pavelec and pretty good week’s work for GM Jeff Gorton. Great landing spot for Shattenkirk after a disappointing turn in Washington after the trade deadline.

Staal’s contract shifts from NMC to modified NTC next offseason. A nice bounce back year from him might entice someone to take a flyer on him. maybe you can pick up 50% of his contract and flip him for a low pick or minor leaguer, if he were to become a cap causality. So if his cap hit is $5.7m, that turns into a retained cap hit of $2.85m. If his replacement is, say, Ryan Graves, who has a current cap hit of ~$650k, then that move still saves us $2.2m in cap space, and without the problematic dead space until the year 2525.
So if this happens, plus Nash and Pavelec coming off the books, we could have $11.3m in cap space for our RFAs. Grabner and Holden (if still around) give us another $3.2m. Add roughly $2m in cap increase, and we’re at $16.5 to resign Vesey, Hayes, Miller and Fast.
Hopefully at that point one of the young goalies is ready for backup time, Buchnevich is a top-6, and Lisa is ready to break in, amongst others.

Yes, definitely like to see a centre added. I’m at the point now that I’d rather see them add the centre via trade. Not sure of the centres left via free agency but any that might of helped seemed to be gone (some with not so good contracts today) except for maybe Marleau (can I make logical points more than once or is that bad?) who can win draws but at his age his contract would be on the books no matter what so it’s a bit of a risk.
