Before free agency began, I listed the following as the items the ones upon which the Rangers would have to spend their cap space prior to the season, either by signing or by trade:
- Re-sign Zibanejad
and FastUPDATE: Fast re-signed for 3 years at $1.85 million AAV Backup goaltenderAt least one defenseman, should be two, but could go up to three if Klein retires.Fourth line center- Either a first line center, top six winger, or third line center, depending on how the team wants to deploy Zibanejad, Hayes, and Miller.
So far, the team has acquired Kevin Shattenkirk ($6.65 million AAV x 4 years), Ondrej Pavelec ($1.3 million x 1 year), and (unofficially UPDATE: Desharnais signing has been made official) David Desharnais ($1 million x 1 year). Those three signings satisfy items 2, 3, and either 4 or 5, depending on how the team intends to deploy Desharnais. I imagine he is being brought in like Pirri to play on the fourth line with opportunity on the power play. Unlike Pirri, he is less of a shooter and more of a set up man. Great, just what we needed on the PP: more passers.
You can read my post from 7/2 to see what I think of Shattenkirk and Pavelec. The really short version is I really like the Shattenkirk signing and really hate the Pavelec signing.
I’m disappointed that we weren’t in on Nail Yakupov, who signed a one year deal with Colorado on short money. There are still some other fliers out there that I’d like to take. Mikhail Grigorenko is one, although there is an unconfirmed report that he’s signed a three year deal with CSKA Moscow. Alex Chiasson is still out there. Advanced stats darling Yohann Auvitu would also be an intriguing pickup for the AHL with the possibility of earning more in the NHL. Bringing back Viktor Stalberg would be a good move for the fourth line, and I know the Rangers like him as they tried to bring him back last year but couldn’t make the dollars work. Then there are guys like Jagr, Vanek, and Jussi Jokinen, who still have great hands but the legs are pretty much shot. On defense, there isn’t much else out there. Everyone is either a lefty or has a lot of baggage/question marks. Cody Franson would be my pick as far as a flier goes, simply because he’s the youngest of an old and//or slow lot of right handers. Dennis Wideman would probably be next, but seeing as how the NHL officials hate him and the team he plays for, he’s probably someone to avoid.
My guess is the Rangers will now focus on item #1 on the list at the top: re-signing Zibanejad and Fast. Once those two are locked up, they will be able to revisit the FA and trade markets with a better idea of their cap situation in the short and long terms.

I don’t think DeAngelo will be here as 7th dman either as he needs to play somewhere. If he starts that way it won’t last long.
Most of others you named were just signed so their development will be by playing and yes players develop in ahl too. Very much so.

BDL, who said anything about blocking our guys? I’m talking about short term deals as security blankets in the event that our guys aren’t ready. Besides, Day isn’t playing in the NHL this year even if the team only had three defensemen under contract. He’s just not ready. Same goes for Zborovsky (who I actually like a lot) and Bereglazov, although Bereglazov probably has an outside chance of being a depth NHL defenseman this year after some time getting used to North America. Pionk is an interesting case, as I don’t trust the undrafted NCAA defensemen jumping straight to the NHL after watching Gilroy flounder. Krug took a year in the AHL, although Dekeyser came right in without trouble.
All that’s left is DeAngelo, and boy, is he going to be in Casa Di Cane under AV. So it behooves the team to have a backup plan, especially on the right side.

As for the wings you’ve listed, who would play on the 4th line with Fast?

they might keep Kampfer as “7th dman”
but that’s not really higher than 8th since oftentimes the 7th is journeyman whose development is not hindered by sitting. the so called 8th being a younger guy needs to play somewhere.
also don’t be surprised if Holden is traded.
LikeLike
I agree that they have enough D-man, Kampfer being #7 with an outside chance of a young guy coming in. Unless they decide to trade Holden as a part of a package for a center, but mainly for salary dump purposes.
I believe they already have a pretty good idea on what it will take to sign both Zibanejad and Fast. Both are arbitration eligible, but Zibanejad doesn’t have a good case because of his injury and subsequent mediocre production. Fast has a stronger case, but we aren’t talking of some big dollars there.
What, and if, they do with the next center will largely determine this team’s success in 2017-18.

Kampfer is an ideal 7th dman, as he’s a righty on a squad where 4 of the top 6 are lefties, and guys like Day, Pionk, Bereglazov, Graves, and Zborovsky need to play. And like Alex said, if there’s an injury and we’re not on a long West Coast jaunt, we’ll likely call up someone else. Kampfer would exist only to play in that hyper-specific situation of losing a guy to sickness/injury with only 2 hours to go till game time and we’re in Vancouver.
And while Kampfer is kinda sucky – he’s not Kostka. He can play in a pinch.
I don’t see us touching another defenseman in free agency. We’re flush with kids with a good amount of upside, and still have Holden for the time being. The most I can see us doing is, if Holden gets jettisoned, we sign some minor league reclamation fodder like Tim Erixon or Brandon Gormley.
And hopefully Zika doesn’t try to hold us hostage. I could(‘ve) seen him signing 4-5 years for $4.25m – $4.5m…but now that he’s kinda it for us other than Kevin Hayes, if I were his agent, I know how valuable and necessary he is right now. I’d think his price went up to $4.75 – 5M per year, and wouldn’t be surprised at all if he eked out $5.25 per year from us. I hope not, but can see it.
Lemme know when Bozak’s flight gets in.

BDL I said the same thing about the wings on this team. Not sure how the roster will shake out because I believe they’ll find a 1 or a 3 C before training camp but I would think their best lineup would be constructed with the wing pairing as such:
Vesey-C-Nash
Miller-C-Zucc
Kreider-C-Buchnevich
Fast-C-Graber.
That’s based on passed success. chemistry and style of play

Makes sense to try to dump Holden even though the coach has a preference for him. I would think that preference will lessen with Shattenkirk in the lineup. And since Gorton was saying that DeAngelo was “important” to get back in the AZ deal, I would imagine they want to try to get him into the lineup and that the 3RD spot is his to lose come camp. Seeing as how they signed Kampfer to an extension before the end of the year and how he would have gone in over Klein in the post season if there was a change to occur, I think he’s a preferable 7th man as opposed to spending another salary similar to Holden’s for a journeyman.
Bereglazov and Day may very well cause a lot of this to be re-thought come September anyhow. For now I’d say Gorton has done some pretty good work considering it’s now July 5 and the only blueline questions are about the right side of the 3rd pairing and the extra man to carry….

Alex I think we’ll come to realize that line was ‘lightning in a bottle’ last season. Time will tell. One thing’s for certain though, if Buchnevich and Vesey are healthy and playing well they need to be given some opportunities. Neither can be a throw away 4th liner this year

Was Kampfer’s extension due to expansion rules? This was all before Girardi’s buyout and Klein’s possible retirement, so they could’ve just been giving themselves a safety valve in the event that they made a few moves that left them with too few defensemen to expose.

Alex let’s be fair though, Buchnevich missed half the season with his back issues. By the time he came back the team had hit its stride and it was tough to get him a regular spot. Played 41 games in his first year in the NHL and still managed 20 points. Plus he had a damn good first round in the post season where a lot of our veterans didn’t bother to show up. I’d say he gets a pass for not “showing it” and should probably get a better look this season, no?

I think i said this on the last thread but if you look at the roster as it is and add in the RFA’s thats 9 wingers and 8 D – without even thinking about youngsters, further free agents or try-outs. Klein may retire to bring that number down but you’ve still got Pionk, Bereglazov, Graves and Day on D so spinning a trade out of Holden, plus a winger, a young D-man and a pick should net us a mid-tier 1C.

Hey James. Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought I read where Gorton stated that Miller can play center last week. Frankly, given the wingers the Rangers have I would like to see him get a trial there. He can always improve his defensive play at the position, but he has to play it to do so. If they acquire a center than removes this need, fine too. After all, with Zucc, Nash, Buch, Vesey, and Kreider that leaves only one winger spot open in the top 9. That person could be Grabner and then there is a spot on the 4th line.

James, I doubt that they are considering Puempel as anything more than a 13th forward. The only reason he was re-signed so quickly was for expansion draft compliance.
As for Miller at center, we are just connecting the dots. As it stands, without him, they only have three centers on the roster.

TYM, I’m sure it’s a possibility. Plenty of scenarios are. Just seems as though Miller has had back to back 22 goal seasons and career highs in points playing an effective role on the wing. I don’t think the mindset there is to move him to center where he’s never seemed all that effective at the NHL level. Again, that’s my opinion. If the team sees fit to do so then by all means I hope it works out. I’m just under the impression that they see themselves as needing to acquire a top line center as opposed to going Zibanejad-Hayes-Miller down the middle.

Aight, we currently have $5.5M in cap space, with Zibanejad to sign. BUT – if Klein is removed, we have $8.4M. So if Zika signs for…$5M per, that gives us $3.4M to afford a 2/3C to take the pressure off.
But, I’d assume Holden goes the other way to offset. So – $1.6M added to $3.4M, then minus $650k for Kampfer as 7D = $4.35M towards a new center. Since we probably want to have a little wiggle room, maybe $1M, then we’re right back to around $3.4M for a center.
That is, if we’re going straight Holden + Pick/Prospect for Mystery Center.
Bozak makes $4.2M, so it COULD happen but would leave us without our cap wiggle room. Fast WILL be on IR for the first month or so, and likely replaced by Jensen, who’s qualifying offer is $1M less. So Bozak is still possible, with a month of prorated cap space while Fast is recovering.
My gut tells me that unless someone we aren’t considering as a trade asset is being bandied around, and we’re working with the Holden/Pick/Prospect framework – they’ll likely target someone slightly less expensive than Bozak, unless salary is retained. But I personally wouldn’t make extra for that unless it’s a mid-round pick or a Fogarty/Gilmour type.

usually when a guy is out a month his cap hit stays with the team unless they’re at the absolute max because teams also want to build a nest egg that pro rated can mean something at deadline or cover other short term injuries. Especially early in the season. (unlike the end when a Chicago was able to use Kanes salary a few years ago since he was out until the playoffs).
I could see us carrying a 22 man roster not counting quickie if others are reasonably healthy. But if we carry 23 + quickie we’ll be needing the replacements salary fit in too. Unless we are at the max and go long term injury which we and other teams rarely use.

I don’t view Skjei as untouchable Gravy, but he’s a tough one to move. This year he’s unbelievably affordable, especially since he’s their 3D. And he likely won’t command a huge huge raise next year – they can bridge him for the low 2’s, or if they were smart, they’d long-term him for around $2.75-3m for 4 or 5 years. That’s mega-affordable for a guy who’ll be anchoring our 2nd pair for the length of his deal…or if we’re lucky and he can play the right side, he might find himself on the 1st pair.
With some many RFAs coming up who’ll actually command some hefty raises, and already knowing that we won’t be able to accommodate all of them – I wouldn’t trade Skjei, even for a slightly better player, if it meant we would be taking on a larger cap hit in the next season or two. For instance, if we traded Skjei for Trouba…that’s a slam-dunk player wise, but Trouba is going to be an RFA coming off of a cap hit of $2.8M. We’d have to pay him millions more than we’d have to pay Skjei, and our tough choice of what RFA go trade becomes of a tough choice of what two RFAs to trade.
So, in short – I’d trade Skjei, but it would have to be a hyper-specific scenario where the player we got back was comparable in skill, on-ice performance, and now-$$/future-$$.

The teams in those cases have the option of deciding if the award is 1 or 2 years since the player elected the arbitration.
of course they could still sign a deal of any length before it gets to that point and most teams/players go that route.

It’s always amazing to me that GMs and coaches in all sports don’t seem to talk that much. Time after time you see the GM bring in a player and the coach either does not play him or uses him in a role that doesn’t seem to suit him. It seems like a power straggle with the coach saying “FU. You can sign him but I don’t have to play him.” You might say “what we have here is a failure to communicate.”

It’s actually pretty eye opening when you look at the roster that was on paper when the Rangers were eliminated in the first round vs Pittsburgh in 15-16 as compared to it today.
Gone:
Stepan
Brassard
Yandle
Girardi
Boyle
Raanta
Lindberg
Moore
Stalberg
Glass
E Staal
Mcilrath
Diaz
If you include Stoll, Etem and Paille who all played in at least 10 games in the regular season that breaks down to 5 defensemen, 1 goalie and 10 forwards. That’s nearly an entire starting roster gone inside of 14 months.

When CARP took over the blog, I pulled out my dog eared copy of Nightmare on 33rd Street and re-read it. Right under it was Thin Ice by Larry “Ratso” Sloman. Had to read that one again too. Who I could ever forget Beaver Davidson and Davey Brown?

I’d be fine with bringing Bozak here, but obviously it’s not a lock that it’s going to happen. Anybody have any other options for what sounds like will need to be our 2c?
Any chance we could get Hertle? Kadri? They’d cost a lot more than Holden and low pick.

Kadri isn’t going anywhere. Maybe as the season progresses they’ll see if a name like Spezza or Stastny surfaces as trade bait. Bryan Little is on the last year of his current contract maybe something happens there. Never know.
Only center we are getting for Holden is a guy named Ugotz!

Lol-James- Spezza and Nash make roughly the same($7.5 AAV), but Spezza is a year older and has another year left on his deal. Nash might agree to go to Dallas who had reloaded this summer and is now coached by his old Columbus coach, Hitchcock. Spezza is fragile, but so is Nash.

Wasn’t a wish list by any means Tom. Just throwing out possible names. Trading Step and bringing in Spezza would be robbing Peter to pay Paul.
We look due for a clean fresh new post

Btw I have full confidence that if Nash can get into 70-75 games he’s gonna put up 30+ goals and hover around 60 points.
Unfortunately I’m also pretty confident that he won’t come close to 70-75 games

Good morning Boneheads welcome to Friday! Here is the problem I see with Holden, who’s going to take him if we don’t want him? It’s the same thing with Staal even if we got him to waive his NMC, who wants a defenseman who can’t skate and can’t see?
