  8. I am tired of seeing Kreider jumping out of a pool. I want to see him jumping out of quick sand, because that’s where this team is headed if they don’t upgrade the Center position!

  9. Thanks Kevin Klein. He gave us a lot more than we thought we’d get for a few seasons. A good, proud guy who didn’t want to hang on as a press box warmer. Maybe one day we’ll see him back in the organization.

    I still make that MDZ for Klein trade any day of the week. Though – imagine if we traded Del Zotto before his value went off a cliff?

  57. There were a few situations during expansion where Vegas, IMHO, took a lesser package to stay away from particular players than just going for the player. So I don’t think McPhee would use up all that good will he just painstakingly garnered so soon.

  67. I don’t think I heard the name Draisatl more than a handful of times before the post season. He’s in the right place at the right time that’s for sure. If he gets one of those huge contracts because McDavid got his they’ll have their work cut out for them ala Chicago

  68. Chiarelli’s a weird one. He wins a Cup with Boston, but trades Seguin for a whole lot of nada. Even stranger in Edmonton, with the Hall trade. Personally I think that team is still a tire fire without them absolutely lucking into McDavid. He stole Cam Talbot from us, but in the same draft gave up a first rounder for Griffin Reinhart.

    Salvaging Jonathan Drouin’s value was remarkable work from Yzerman. But that Girardi deal…the Cally contract, Killorn contract…yeah he’s a hit-or-miss guy too.

  70. Edmonton without McDavid is pretty much no different than t Chicago without Kane, Pittsburgh without Crosby or Washington without Ovechkin the first few years those players began their careers. Takes a while to build a supporting cast. They’re on the right track.

    Naslund did the honourable thing and retired and didn’t saddle the rangers with cap hit (like win kleiner).

    I liked naslund, thought he did a good job here.

  100. Carp, if therre ever was a player who would have been offer sheeted, it is McDavid. So locking him up for 12.5 was worth it, especially when pretty much every team with enough cap space would have tried to sign him to more.

  104. I remember when we offer sheeted Sakic with significant front loading since the Avs were cash crunched. Their ownership was in the movie business and some hit movie allowed them to match. They had 10 days to match which they took all of. When they matched they faxed over a fist with one finger extended.

    What I meant to say is that there was a reason they floated 13.25. Comes to $106M. In order for any other team to offer anything similar it would have to be over 7 years, which is $15.14M, max allowed by CBA this year would be $15M. The league would’ve rejected the offer sheet.

    Fwiw the honourable naslund thing I was referencing had nothing to do with how good or bad posters perceived his time here (I thought he was good) and was solely referencing to his retirement and the way it did not hurt the rangers cap at all.

    Which, I think, was also the way booby intended his naslund reference post which in turn led to my initial post to you referencing naslund.

  114. Nice article, Carp. He was a big surprise when he was healthy. And I’m sure he had his own reasons to retire, but he did them a huge favor. There is nothing they could’ve done with this $2.9M short of placing him on LTIR.

I know firsthand how busy he is at home, and how helpful and committed he is when it comes to his family.

  126. Carp-Nice piece on Klein. We wish him well.

    I’ve always believed that Ovechkin was aiming for Klein at the end of that game meaning regular season game. To me, it speaks to what a dirtbag Ovechkin is. He didn’t dump it in. He shot the puck at Klein. Obviously, Klein’s back issues were the subsequent problem, but the Rangers could have used Klein that spring who seemed to be day to day for several weeks and returned as a shell of his former self. I think we all imagined he’d be fine by the following season, but he was never really the same.

  131. Klein retiring at 32 show what a toll the game takes on the players’ bodies. Hopefully he heals and has a healthy life from here on. Also shows you what Shatty may have left on the table. He’ll be 32 when his contract expires. KK is a very honorable person to not come back for the money when he decided he couldn’t perform at his previous level. I might be tempted to just show up for $3.2 million.

The best was during the ’14 SCF, which was the year Kreider jumped out the pool (yes, I said, “out the pool”), Ken Campbell of THN was asking him on the off-day in LA about jumping out the pool, and Kreider was just messing with him, telling him he just jumped backward into the pool and they recorded it in reverse, then that it was photoshopped, etc. Went on and on until Campbell left him alone.

  232. Just finished a review of a book on game theory wherein the Professor/ author states that we want and need challenges to face and obstacles to overcome and since we don’t get enough of this like our ancestors did from daily life, we need artificial trials. Sports bring meaning to life.

  237. It wouldn’t surprise me, Carp. Classy= Ovechkin’s mentality. He’s the worst kind of player in my opinion. He’s got all the talent in the world but just lacks the commitment and determination to be the best. So he’d rather whine, make excuses, hurt people or go invisible in big spots. At the end of the day he’ll collect his millions and probably go play in the KHL for the last year or two of his career.
