Good morning, boneheads! It’s ilb. Just trying to find something to talk about in July.
The NHL is entering its next offseason stage, the arbitration period. As far as I know, there was no team elected arbitration in the league this year ( deadline was July 6th. )
Here are the players who filed for arbitration, and the dates of hearings (courtesy of NHL.com). I excluded a few cases that settled prior to arbitration date. Most do, in general. Jesper Fast is one of them. He filed and almost immediately signed a 3 year deal at $1.85M AAV. Hearings start July 20 and go through August 4th . Players who filed for arbitration aren’t eligible to sign offer sheets. ( Sorry, BDL ) π
Arizona Coyotes: Jordan Martinook (July 26)
Boston Bruins: Ryan Spooner (July 26)
Buffalo Sabres:Β Nathan Beaulieu (Aug. 4),Robin Lehner (July 27)
Calgary Flames: Micheal Ferland (July 22)
Colorado Avalanche: Matt Nieto (July 31)
Detroit Red Wings: Tomas Tatar (July 20)
Edmonton Oilers: Joey LaLeggia (July 25)
Los Angeles Kings: Kevin Gravel (Aug. 2)
Minnesota Wild: Mikael Granlund (Aug. 4), Nino Niederreiter (Aug. 3)
Nashville Predators: Viktor Arvidsson (July 22), Marek Mazanec (July 27), Austin Watson (July 24)
New York Islanders: Calvin de Haan (Aug. 2)
New York Rangers: Mika Zibanejad (July 25)
Ottawa Senators: Ryan Dzingel (July 21), Jean-Gabriel Pageau (July 28)
Pittsburgh Penguins: Brian Dumoulin (July 24), Conor Sheary (Aug. 4)
St. Louis Blues: Colton Parayko (July 20)
Tampa Bay Lightning: Tyler Johnson (July 20), Ondrej Palat (July 25)
Vancouver Canucks: Reid Boucher (Aug. 1), Michael Chaput (July 21)
Vegas Golden Knights: Nate Schmidt (Aug. 3)
Winnipeg Jets: Connor Hellebuyck (Aug. 1)
A decision must be made within 48 hours of the hearing. Also, teams with at least one player elected arbitration case will be able to execute another buyout. It’s called a buyout outside of the regular period. It starts on the third day after settlement of the team’s last arbitration case, or receipt of the team’s last arbitration award, and lasts 48 hours.Β The Rangers are unlikely to use it since buying out Staal is way too expensive. Nick Holden isn’t eligible for this type of buyout since his average salary is below $2.75M. In fact, since the number $2.75M was set in 2013 with an annual increase (percentage) similar to the average NHL salary increase year by year, I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t be able to buy out Klein that way either. Another reason to appreciate his move.Β
Here you go, folks.

I was against signing Shat-in-the-hat, but if was between him and old fart Thornton, I’d pick Shat every time. Thornton is not what they need. He’s a passer. They have too many of them already. They need a guy that can shoot the puck at center. Of course, scoring every now and then would help too.
So, now I’m wondering if they will actually make a play for a top-six center, go for a 3rd line center or just plug Miller there and go with Ziba, Hayes, Miller, Desharnais. That lineup at center scares nobody except Rangers fans.

I don’t think the rangers planned on shattenkirk
I do think he gave the rangers a deal they couldn’t refuse
I don’t think the rangers will do any sort of “rebuild” while the $8.5 million dollar man is in net. Yes, I know gorton used the term rebuild in his statement, but I think it was loosely not literally. I think “retooling” is more what is actually going to happen
I think the 7th pick in the draft and addressing an organizational position need (RD) was the best gorton could get for stepan (had to throw in a raanta sweetener). I don’t think there were other options but gorton knew they couldn’t keep that contract of stepan’s.
I don’t think the 7th overall pick was the grand plan, it was the best “asset”gorton could get.
In an ideal world, I think gorton wanted a centre as part of the stepan deal but as noted before, not a lot of interest in stepan other than Arizona.
I think the drafting of andersson was mostly based on NHL readiness of him vs down the road potential thus giving gorton a centre in the deal at the end.
In the end I think the lack of interest in stepan and the shattenkirk deal were both unforeseen and handled the best way possible “in the moment” by gorton
I think he is going to trade from winger or left D depth (depending on the return will depend on who goes) for a centre if possible but if a trade does not pan out, will try the miller option at centre.

Hard to judge how the Ruff addition fits with AV without knowing more about his relationship with Gorton. If they are on the same page and he is Gorton’s guy Ruff is going to help the D get better. AV doesn’t think Buek was up to the job. If Gorton doesn’t trust him he could be tying up a qualified coach who may not be available during the season. Or he could just be hedging his bets. As far as lines and defensive pairings go this year, I think we are going to need to revive that Tom Renney Line Generator because AV/Ruff/Arniel will spend most of the year trying to get the right pairings. The only two quibbles with Pete’s are 1) Staal is in the lineup if he is healthy 2) I don’t like the idea of Andersson centering the fourth line. If he can’t crack the top nine then send him back to Sweden – just do whatever it takes contractually to make sure he would be eligible for the playoffs – if the Rangers get that far (because everyone sucks, trade everyone but the little kid from Norway. With Desharnais around you have to qualify which little kid you are talking about :-)).

Carp – That is interesting about Andersson agreeing to go to Hartford. My only question is would his current contract allow him to go to the AHL or would he have to go back to Sweden? I ask because I don’t know how those type of contracts are set up in terms of Euro leagues and the NHL/AHL.
I know junior players can’t report to AHL teams until they would be over-agers in the CHL or were like J.T. Miller – drafted prior to playing Junior hockey. even though J.T. played Juniors, he was drafted out of the USNTDP so he was eligible to play in the AHL while still maintaining Junior eligibility as an under-ager.

Can someone clarify for me? When we drafted Lias I thought he was still under contract with FrΓΆlunda HC of the Swedish Hockey League for another year. Does he have to finish out his contract there or can he play for the Rangers/Hartford this year if he makes the team?

According to CapFriendly.com, the Rangers have 43 players under contract – thus putting them seven under the 50-man limit. However, they do not count Sean Day and Tim Gettinger because they are under 19 and are considered Junior players. If both were to make the Rangers, the roster (and play more than 11 NHL games) would go to 45. Day can turn pro and be assigned to Hartford (thus being counted towards the 50-man) – not sure about Gettinger (who has played four years of Junior to Day’s five).
As for Andersson and his Swedish contract, I believe he would be cleared to jump to the NHL because the league has contract agreements with all of the Foreign Leagues except the KHL – which is why the Rangers have to wait on Igor Shestyorkin to fulfill his KHL deal.
Interestingly enough, while Nicklas Jensen signed with Jokerit in Finland, they are a KHL team so he can’t jump back (unless he were released by them or if something were written into his Russian deal). Since the Rangers made him a qualifying offer, they retain his NHL rights. It would not surprise me to see the Rangers wade into the shallow end of free agency for a body or two to add into the fourth line/I-95, I-91 battle.

That is also a reason I think the rangers need to see what they have in graves at the NHL level. See what and where cap $$$$ may need to go to at the LD position.

Carp, you could put a chihuahua on skates and teach it to stand up on the blueline in this league and some GM out there would sign it to a 7 year deal worth 5.5 per. Kevin Weekes would probably tweet out that it was a steal.

Far as I’m concerned there aren’t 12 Dmen in the League worth more than 2 mil per. Too many teams, too diluted talent.

James, if that chihuahua has an adjusted 5×5 corsi of 53 or better, he’s WORTH EVERY EFFING PENNY.
Agreed re: Graves, Wick. Unless Graves is having an especially weak showing in Hartford, they need to work him into a game or two, here and there. Something tells me Staal might benefit from the occasional rest.
It all depends on camp – if guys like Pionk and Graves aren’t showing the staff anything, it’s hard to justify. But if we can break camp with Pionk as #7 (assuming a top-6 of McD Shat Sjkei Smith Staal and DeAngelo, Holden long jettisoned for a Lemieux-level 21-year old center), then you can occasionally spell Staal, move Smith left for a game, and get Pionk some looks. And on a longer homestand, you can certainly call up Graves from time to time.
And we may not even need to have a plan to do that – the chances of our blueline being 6-deep healthy are close to nill. Graves and Pionk will get some looks.

Much like offensive linemen in football, it’s hard to know the value of a defenseman because there are no effective ways to measure performance.

Saw as much out of Jensen as I did with Puemple, which is not much. Goodbye. Have fun. Why not ask Puemple to join you?
What little I know about Sean Day I wouldn’t be surprised to see him given a shot. It sounds to me that he was viewed as having exceptional talent and had a bump in the road. If he’s right in the head he could be in the mix or at least sent to Hartford for a while to see if he can make the jump.

SN-Agree on the need for a 4th liner. I’m sure Gorton wanted to be as flexible as possible for Zibinijad’s contract and a potential trade for a center, but if there’s no trade coming, going to need to find someone.
James- I can’t remember how much he signed for, but I think Poulliot would have been a great pickup. Let us know if you see “Bozak” or “Kadri” or anything else on that highway.
