FYI – Shatty is the 28th player to wear #22. I can’t believe you guys forgot to mention the immortal NHL star Anson Carter as a #22. Interesting to note that the number worn bu the most players is #6 (45 times, last by McIlrath) – one ahead of #14 (44 times, last by Chris Mueller).

Alex,
Very happy to have two very young centers in the system. If all goes well they will be the one and two by the 2020/21 season. Now, how’s the plan for THIS year coming along.
Big mystery with Beuk being ‘kicked upstairs,’ Ruff’s quiet entrance and the oddball low-key handling of it all. You can tell me all you want that Bazooka Joe is delighted , but I’m unconvinced.
I’d be very very surprised if Shatty fell into Gorton’s lap, he would have had some indication from Shattenkirk’s camp that if NYR can come up with decent numbers that they’re in the driving seat. Big deals like that aren’t a one phone call deal
The NHL no longer permits players to wear “0” or “00”. Frankly, I always thought it is a great number for a goalie (esp. 00).
That is one on my favorite number trivia factoids. The other is that MLB pitcher Bill Voiselle (played in the 1940s) petitioned the National League to wear “96”. while Voiselle was born in Greenwood, SC he grew up in Ninety Six, SC (BTW – 2010 population 1,998). American League umpire (1960s) Cal Drummond was born in Ninety-Six. In June 1969 Drummond received a concussion after a foul ball hot him in the head. He was attempting a comeback in Triple-A in 1970 when he died in May as a result of the injuries he suffered from the concussion.
While others misspent their youth in pool halls, I spent it accumulating vast amount os useles knowledge – as a favorite Salesian High teacher used to say.
the team is now in it for the long haul. i support that approach.
there is a very good chance they will miss the playoffs this year.
last year 7 teams who made it the previous year did not make it. why would anyone consider the rangers immune to that fate in a cap league where they have frequently traded numbers 1 and 2 picks.
To say he fell into their laps might be a stretch. They targeted Thornton for one year, for sure, and if he agreed, then no Shattenkirk. But it wasn’t as if they weren’t negotiating with Shattenkirk too. They most certainly were.
11 out 12 for the Rangers. I’m thinking guys like Hank, McD, Zucc, Nash, Kreider, Miller, Hayes, Smith, Staal, Vesey, and your guy Grabner do not support that approach. I doubt AV supports that approach. I doubt Skjei supports that approach. You would have to think Shatennkirk was not thinking, hey the Rangers are rebuilding and are probably not going to make the playoffs this season, but even though it’s the prime of my career,I support that approach.
This is a playoff team. Start off strong and tear up the league in Oct/Nov, play 50/50 hockey the rest of the way and lose in 1st or, if over to Atlantic side, 2nd round; wash/rinse/repeat
Yeah, so the conversation went like this….one call remember!
GB: Hi Jeff, its The Baz!
JGGM: Who?
GB: George Bazos, @Shattdeuces agent!
JGGM: Who the hell is @shattdeuces?!?!
GB: Kevin Shattenkirk, number one free agent target of the UFA class of 2017
JGGM: Oh right, so you’re calling to tell me what i’m going to have to use as a baseline for the Ryan McDonough contract extension
GB: No, i’m calling to tell you that in a one time only offer, Kevin @shattdeuces Shattenkirk is available for $7m for 7 years
JGGM: I’m waiting on another call from the West Coast thanks dude…..
GB: He’s really interested in signing with the Rangers Jeff, don’t miss this chance…..
JGGM: Oh right, well i overpaid for Brendan Smith by $335k, can we bring it down to say $6.65m?
GB: Absolutely, no problem Jeff – but careful he might sign for someone else if you don’t snap him up!!
JGGM: Well you see i’m waiting to see what my order of Jumbo Shrimp is going to cost me, plus we’ve got this lockout, er, i mean CBA renewal thingy in 4 years…
GB: Well, shall we say 4 years @ $6.65m?
JGGM: Sure, but what about my Shrimp order?
GB: Got to do it now Jeff, he’s on a plane to Detroit in an hour…
JGGM: Oh ok, sign me up, thanks Baz!
–puts phone down and JGGM turns to his secretary
JGGM: Marsha!! Get me the numbers for Lou Lamoriello and Holden’s agent and ask Brian Leetch if i can un-retire his number!!
Fulfill deez, #22. You want to impress me? Stay with your man and stay on your feet in your zone. Sell childhood dreams when you go to New ro Lightning games
Hey James,
Trying to get some action going here. Would be nice if Wicky stopped by to take the opposite side of my argument. You and I usually agree on things, so you are no help. 😁
it’s not about tanking on purpose. but they moved stepan with future in mind both cap space and the number 7 overall plus deangelo.
they still have some bad contracts plus buyout for girardi for many years to come. they will have to pay at some point for trading all those picks. the cap does not allow them to solve the doughnut hole at center.
i’m on record as predicting they won’t make the playoffs this season. but i was wrong last year so we’ll see.
Alex,
I am perfectly willing to take one step back this season in order to go three steps forward next season. Problem I see is that they have done this half way. If they really are looking to rebuild on the fly, then rebuild on the fly. Trade Nash, and Zucc. Get some young players you can go forward with. Because right now they are exactly what SN says they are.
I am not so sure that the Rangers will necessarily “pay” that big a price for trading away all those picks. For all the crap Kevin Hayes gets he is still a first rounder who has plenty of room to become a better player if he pushes himself. Jimmy Vesey is a third rounder who has first round talent. Toss in the the three d-men that Gorton signed and there an alternate stream of prospects coming into the organ-eye-zation. Will they all prove out in the end, who knows, but there are no certainties when it comes to first round picks.
One could say that the Jessiman/McIlrath picks hurt more than trading away the draft picks because the Rangers got value for them while drafting Jessiman cost the Rangers a shot at a plethora of talent and McIlrath cost them a shot at Tarasenko and Fowler.
Anthony,
I agree.
Alex,
Zucc terribly overrated by Ranger fans. Good player, but no close to being untouchable. You can’t think with your heart when it comes to trades and building a team. As Stepan fan, I can speak to that. It made sense to trade Stepan. You can argue if the value was there, but not the logic in trading him. Trading Zucc makes an awful lot of sense. Good contract, should bring back good value. Nash, in order to get value, they would probably need to eat half his cap hit.
Alex,
Grabner is not going to bring back useable players in return. He’s a draft pick trade. Somewhere between the second and fourth round is his return.
AnthonyM every time I see Taransenko score I get sick to my stomach. The Rangers really missed an opportunity there to say the least! Bdl I have always been on board for trading the Hobbit now is the time, work something out with Ottawa, reunite him with BGB!
If I’m a 28 year-old free agent superstar, looking at a potential 7 mil + contract over extended years in a month or so, the very last thing I’m going to do is to play with abandon and jeopardize that very special situation. Expect me to contribute a very ordinary playoff effort and to NOT take a hit to make a play, etc., etc. This is what the Caps got out of ShattRochelle. And hard to blame him.
Pete I hear you on Tarasenko. I surprised myself when I looked back at my Mock Draft that year and had/wanted the Rangers to draft him. Sure, the one time I get it right the Rangers don’t listen to me! 🙂
I also happen to believe you when you’re saying you’re willing to take a step back this season, due to the moves they’ve made and might still make, then go forward. … I don’t believe there won’t be about 95-97 percent here crying and moaning when they do take that step back. And I don’t believe any of youse would go for a full rebuild.
though that’s how he plays, coos. That’s who he is. … That’s how Zubov was, for example. Nobody seemed to care. Well, nobody seemed to care, after he was gone.
BDL, you know me pretty well. I for one would stand for a full rebuild. If I could sit and watch 82 games a year from ’98- ’04 I can get through anything Ranger related. Maybe there’d be a silver lining and I could actually afford tickets for a couple of years again…
I too think they dodged said bullet by bringing in the Hayes’ and Vesey’s of the world. The real question doesn’t come until the Lundqvist era is over. That’s when there’s at least a real chance they will stink for a while
Not a full rebuild going on and do not see how they miss the playoffs this year. They have improved weakest area of defense, still have a lot of scoring depth and should have an improved power play. Less depth down the middle but also think that will also be addressed by Gorton by trade deadline
Lightning should be better. I am not convinced there’s a l Blue Jackets kind of season coming out of Philly or Carolina this season. Rangers should still finish 4th in the Metro. 6th or 7th in East at worst
This team has too much talent to stink, coach notwithstanding, but many from the college ranks (see: soft)
The front line needs a top 9 boardman who can pot some goals in the tough areas, preferably a righty to go along with the obvious top 6 center.
The back line needs Staal to accept a trade anywhere even if they need to hold on to salary. If Gorton can get rid of him without retaining dollars, he is a miracle worker.
What’s with all the re-build talk? They jettisoned Stepan, his overpriced ass and his upcoming no trade kick-in and got back a young 1st rounder plus a first round pick. Girardi they sent to the (very) used car lot. We don’t need to re-build, we need a snazzy center.
Lots of talent on this team. If we find a power center, if our kids mature, and if Hank comes up large, we can compete with anyone. I’d like to see a bit more fire and jam starting with AV.
Lunch with Lou and shanny didn’t go too well. I tried hard on Holden and a pick plus offering to buy the meal but was told I need up my ante for bozak.
Screw bozak we don’t need him we need McKinnon. Dream big or go home.
I originally posted this on 10 JUL, but I’ll re-post it for your pleasure ;
I don’t think the rangers planned on shattenkirk
I do think he gave the rangers a deal they couldn’t refuse
I don’t think the rangers will do any sort of “rebuild” while the $8.5 million dollar man is in net. Yes, I know gorton used the term rebuild in his statement, but I think it was loosely not literally. I think “retooling” is more what is actually going to happen
I think the 7th pick in the draft and addressing an organizational position need (RD) was the best gorton could get for stepan (had to throw in a raanta sweetener). I don’t think there were other options but gorton knew they couldn’t keep that contract of stepan’s.
I don’t think the 7th overall pick was the grand plan, it was the best “asset”gorton could get.
In an ideal world, I think gorton wanted a centre as part of the stepan deal but as noted before, not a lot of interest in stepan other than Arizona.
I think the drafting of andersson was mostly based on NHL readiness of him vs down the road potential thus giving gorton a centre in the deal at the end.
In the end I think the lack of interest in stepan and the shattenkirk deal were both unforeseen and handled the best way possible “in the moment” by gorton
I think he is going to trade from winger or left D depth (depending on the return will depend on who goes) for a centre if possible but if a trade does not pan out, will try the miller option at centre.
Reading and laughing at all the dumb comments on TSN and some other hockey sites about who is the best Russian born player… people say “Ovechkin!” “Fetisov!” “No, it’s Bure!”
someone even called Malkin a one-dimensional player! WHAT?!
Hart, Conn Smythe (should’ve won one this year again but they gifted it to the golden boy) Calder, *2* Art Ross Trophies! The only other Russian to ever win the Art Ross was Ovi (once). 832 points in 706 games…
Malkinstein and Cindy were play on same team which doesn’t lessen his talent but definitely lessens his stature given he is #2 center on the team.
Would take him in a sec here.
Prust saying
He is only a number two center because golden boy gets all the attention… But they both centers and never or almost never play on the same line… so Crosby does not make Malkin better. Malkin carried Pens to their first cup and again was the best player in the postseason this year but was robbed by the NHL because they are too busy writing Sid’s legacy for him…
Now that (almost) everyone has given up on Staal, I see no reason why he can’t regain his old positioning form. Unless he becomes lame, he should be able to call upon muscle memory. And, when riled, he has shown that he can play with vigor and some snarl. Not impossible that he has a rebound season. Unlikely, but not impossible.
Honestly i give up with yous guys sometimes, i think you’ve all got too used to the randomness of NY Sports GM’s (Slats, Phil Jackson, Minaya, Alderson, Tannenbaum)…….JGGM has learned lessons from his predecessor’s mistakes…..i could list them but y’know, they all fell into his lap so why give him any credit??
5 days to Zibanijad’s arbitration hearing. Hopefully, he’s signed before that. Then we send Eric out to wine and dine the GM’s of league. Lobster with the Bruins. Steak with the Stars. Napa valley’s best wines with the Sharks. Beer with the Blues. Get these guys drunk so they trade us their 1C’s for a song named Holden!
Alex, if Staal has only one eye, someone should explain to him that it would behoove both him and us were he to play the larger of two items, the man or the puck.
Tomas Tatar ($4.1m Det offer vs $5.3m ask ) and Colton Parayko ($3.4 & $3.6 vs $4.85) on the clock today – if they make it into the room before settling….
I’d imagine Zibanejad’s salary numbers are similar to Tatar, he was coming off a 3yr $2.75m deal and put up similar numbers to #93.
Hopefully JGGM can sign him up to a reasonable 4 or 5yr deal, but then again maybe he won’t unless it falls into his lap…..
@Carp: there are rebuilds and there are rebuilds. I think many could tolerate a rebuild with quality kids and pieces that fit together. They aren’t going to tolerate throwing darts at the wall and a smattering of equally random free agents.
In any event, if the NYR were going that way, HL would be gone now so that’s all you need to know there. As to playoffs, I still think there is an excellent chance they are in it again. How far they go, check back after trade deadline. They put up 102 pts last year and 94/95 seems the magic cutoff point for the last wild card. Unless HL is a disaster, I don’t see how this team does not get at least 90 points and more likely continues their string of 100+pt seasons. Maybe Carp is right and losing Opie really hurts a lot but have to think the majority of the rest of the team is still young and improving (enough) to more than offset .
When is MSG going to give Carp a special pregame segment? Would love to see his numbered list done up in a 5 or 10 minute segment.
Since Eric is having tremendous difficulty getting Lou and Jeff to deal, I thought I would help them out. I did a little research and stumbled across a stumbling (see what i did there) block. The Maple Leaves (hi Carp!) have used up 49 of their 50 contracts and still have to re-sign RFA Connor Brown. Odds are they are not going to be willing to take a contract back unless it is in their best interest to do so (e.g. a prospect or a player better than Holden).
Rangers might have to up the antti in terms of draft picks and/or prospects. Would you offer Gropp and balance off the deal with conditional draft picks based on how the teams do in the playoffs and whether or not the teams make the playoffs?
Anthony,
I would not offer Gropp. Not because I think he is going to be a player (have not been impressed in the little I have seen him), but because it goes against what they are claiming to do. That’s rebuild on the fly. They need to keep there young talent, and find out what they have.
James I with you on the rebuild. I would hate to see them suck for a number of years, but being a fan since 1970 and all the disappointments I think I would survive! Especially if it meant landing a truly elite center in the draft! Of course I would much rather see them in the playoffs every year, but 1 cup in 77? Tough to swallow!
As a fan I would think that if the team is going to be lousy anyway then a rebuild is easier to take. If they are going to tear it down after years of making the playoffs (like now) then suffering through a few years of being lousy is harder to take.
The dark years of the late ’90s/early ’00s were when a rebuild would have been more acceptable. Then, I guess it’s hard to rebuild when you draft stiffs like Lundmark and Brendl.
Always sobering to be reminded that money, fame, success, even a loving family are sometimes still not enough to stave off the agonies of human consciousness. My heart goes out to his family, and anyone else suffering to that degree. Hopefully, Chester is in a better place, maybe even discovering some new astral plane that awaits us all. Who knows.
On another note, Linkin park was probably one of my earliest experiences with strictly instrumental electronic music. Cure for the itch and session are both awesome in my opinion. Definitely worth checking out if you’re not familiar. Session sounds like something ripped right off the Fight Club soundtrack.
I worked a few years, 24 hours a day with an active-duty Navy Admiral who, though not making anywhere near what his huge responsibilities demanded, never EVER went to his pocket. Never. I think you get yoosed to that.
100% agree, coos. We need a tough dman now more than ever. Hank is getting old and injury proned. Need someone to protect him. Instead, we brought another soft dman with a childhood dream.
Re: To give The Undertaker his due – To be drafted 10th overall with no obvious hockey talent other than being young, 6’5, 235, and tough speaks well to the fact that these attributes are still marketable with some NHL GMs.

Went to see “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets” today with the wife. Great sci-fi film from Luc Besson! A must watch in 3D! Stunning visuals! Very original and creative idea! Much better than any of the last 4 or 5 Star Wars films!
Every time I read Muckler’s name, I’m reminded of the Amy sergeant complaining about a jeep stuck in the mud: “The mucking mother mucker’s mucked in the mucking muck!”
1 yr deal he still rfa next summer. So it’s a prove it deal.
Say you go 4-5 yrs at 5 per what do you think Miller and Hayes ask for next year. That’s tricky as Hayes Miller agents will look at Mika contract as starting point.
I’m ok 1 yr stay healthy prove it deal. And if scores 30 goals pay him next summer.
Eric, if he scores 30, it’ll be Stepan’s deal, over $6M. Or they will lose him to FA. I’d say take advantage of a potential lock out in 3 years, and give him 5 yr deal at $5M or so with a large bonus in its 4th year to protect him from lockout. I’d worry about Hayes and Miller asking for too much when they earn it.
BDL not that he was impressive by any stretch but I’m pretty sure Zibanejad led the team in post season points. 1-8-9 in 12 games. Nothing special but leverage nevertheless
Wonder how much it would take to get Sheehan from the wings? It would be buying low on him but might be worth a shot. Wings need some cap relief I think.
I think it would be a much wiser decision to trade Staal and eat a ton of his cap-hit than to buy him out. Have to convince him to waive his NTC, but there are plenty of teams that could use him at a discounted price. Including every team in the East.
Buying him out and paying that steep dead-cap space price for eight years is foolish, IMO, especially with Girardi’s dead cap space.
Agreed Carp. As maligned as he is amongst both our fan-base (at least a good chunk of them) and the advanced-stats crowd, I’d say there’d be a fair number of teams that wouldn’t toss him out of bed for eating crackers. If we agree to eat half his hit, that number increases. I’d rather have $2.85M in dead space for the next 4 years than the extra $1.5M per for 4 years after his contract ends.
Think the ‘Canes might want Jordan Staal to feel a little less lonely?
James,
It wasn’t a knock on Zibanijad, it was more in defense of Miller, and Hayes in response to ilb’ comment about them not having earned a bigger contract.
I don’t believe for one second that AV will have Staal be a third pair Dman. He will be top 4, probably paired with Smith. I think this is your argument for buying Staal out. AV will play him top 4. You may have to remove him to keep him from AV. I personally think you could do a lot worse than Staal as a third pair Dman.
I’m curious to see when the Yotes fall out of the playoff race, what return they get for Stepan. Will it be better than what the Rangers got for him. I suspect it may be.
I think Anisimov would probably be a good mentor for Buchnevich, but IMHO he’s too much like Zibinijad and Hayes. Tall, but lacks snarl. Some offensive ability, but lacks consistency. Not sure about his defensive game.
If we can’t bring Bozak here, might as well just sign Daniel Winnik to a 1 year deal if he’ll take it. He’s not as talented as Bozak, but at least he’ll bring a little grit.
Opie left a half-filled bottle of Rogaine in Shatty’s locker. Very polite.

it’s not about tanking on purpose. but they moved stepan with future in mind both cap space and the number 7 overall plus deangelo.
they still have some bad contracts plus buyout for girardi for many years to come. they will have to pay at some point for trading all those picks. the cap does not allow them to solve the doughnut hole at center.
i’m on record as predicting they won’t make the playoffs this season. but i was wrong last year so we’ll see.

Alex,
I am perfectly willing to take one step back this season in order to go three steps forward next season. Problem I see is that they have done this half way. If they really are looking to rebuild on the fly, then rebuild on the fly. Trade Nash, and Zucc. Get some young players you can go forward with. Because right now they are exactly what SN says they are.

they will get more for Nash and Grabner at deadline than now. far more.
assuming we’re out of race at that point.
zucc being traded is a non starter.

Not a full rebuild going on and do not see how they miss the playoffs this year. They have improved weakest area of defense, still have a lot of scoring depth and should have an improved power play. Less depth down the middle but also think that will also be addressed by Gorton by trade deadline

I originally posted this on 10 JUL, but I’ll re-post it for your pleasure ;

2-3 yrs isn’t an option.

For a large portion of last season, Hayes and Miller were there two best forwards. Other than the preseason, you can’t say that about Zibanijad.

Yeah Zika was a beast during preseason.

I’m with Eric. $4.8M per seems right to me. I’d go 5 years…but that probably bumps it up to a cool $5m per. So…Brassard’s deal, exactly.

“The Rangers will have a 48-hour buyout window following settlement of the Zibanejad case that will resolve Marc Staal’s immediate fate.”
I know Brooks kinda has to mention this, but I would be majorly shocked if they actually bought Staal out. Too much dead space in combo with Girardi.

On the bright side, I’ve got some gems from George Grimm that I’ll be posting ahead of his book release in September.
Carp, the Rangers sign a kid who grew up in the Hudson Valley and now the Journal News has no reporters to cover it. Fools.

asshats, Doodie.

I suspect it may be.

i don’t think stepan gets traded this year. too long a remaining contract so az will keep him.

No. 1 pick, 7 overall, plus a young RHD is a pretty good haul for a lousy contract that nobody else wanted.

Anisimov would not make sense contractually, but would make sense on the ice as the 3rd line center. Forget Winnik.
