It’s Go Time!

Exciting night at the Garden. The Rangers will celebrate 25th Anniversary of Stanley Cup win tonight. They will honor the 1994 Stanley Cup Champions with the entire team, coaching staff, management and broadcasters in attendance. Except, of course, Alexander Karovtsev. His wife will be there.
Enjoy the festivities, say what you want about this organization, but they know how host events like that.

The game will start at 8 pm.

Good morning, boneheads!

Not good if you think ping pong balls, even though it wasn’t ROW. But very good for this team’s confidence. Come from behind wins like that go a long way, especially for a team that is going to grow together, along with their rookie coach. More importantly, it wasn’t only their first line this time. Players who are questionable to stay in NY for this re-stew are making a good impression that they want to be a part of it. Buchnevich played a strong game, not only assisting on 2 goals, but also winning a bunch of physical battles along the boards. And also Tony DeAngelo. My gosh, I mentioned it last night. If they can duct tape his mouth between the games and take it off while he is on the ice, this kid could be a solid addition next year, and many years after. Of course he can always eschew a duct tape option and just grow up.

As for the Bruins. Good team after quick turnaround. I don’t think they are a threat in the EC this year. But I wouldn’t underestimate them going forward. They have a very good salary cup structure and flexibility. Interestingly, the player with the highest AAV is David Krejci at $7.25M, followed by Rask ( $7M ). Anyone else is below $7M with their most important players signed long term.

Rangers (22-22-8) vs Bruins (29-17-7), 8 pm start, TV-NBCSN

Had a busy day, thanks JamesG for helping with a new post earlier.

I’m sure you’ve already discussed that Cody McLeod was traded back to Nashville for a seventh-rounder in 2020. McLeod was a good warrior in NY and did what he was brought in to do. Often underappreciated.

Another acquisition made by Nashville today when B. Boyle was sent there by NJ for a second rounder without any of his salary retained will benefit NY Rangers, imo. The market for rentals at center position is set high.

Rangers recalled Lettieri.

Projected lineup:

Kreider-Zibanejad-Zuccarello
Buchnevich-Hayes-Fast
Chytil-Strome-Namestnikov

Rangers-3, Kings-4 (OT)

Good morning, boneheads!

Woke up this morning trying to stay positive because of, you know, this pesky ping pong balls. Except I can’t. Upsetting loss. They are a better team. The Kings is another one of these teams that is on a wrong side of NHL cycle after a successful run. From elite to mediocre, and all the way down to a state of rebuild. Another one of those teams that have a couple of Cups to show for it though.

The more I think about our defense the more I get this feeling that I wouldn’t lose my sleep if none of them came back next year. Maybe McQuaid if he wants to sign here cheap. DeAngelo? Perhaps.

Carp mentioned Nieves in his article. I agree with him that he’s looked like a better player than we all anticipated. Except it’s for a different reason. Nieves, who will become a group VI UFA and will be gone to a team that gives him best contract, has looked like an NHLer because the rest of their bottom 6 is starting to look like minor leaguers. Same goes for some of the LA bottom 6.

Rangers (22-22-7) vs Kings (20-27-4), 7 pm start, TV-MSG, NHLN

Kings are much worse than the Rangers this year. Good thing they have Kovalchuk and his $6.25M cap hit for this year and the next two. He is on the pace of being paid around $300K per goal. Imagine Gorton signing him last July instead?

Looks like they are going with 7 D again, so DeAngelo is in

Rangers (22-21-7) vs Lightning (38-11-2), 8 pm start, TV-NBC

A lot of familiar faces returning to the Garden. Tampa has not been that hot lately, 3-3 in past 6, with a win over the Islanders last night (1-0 SO).

Henrik Lundqvist has won 4 games in a row, he’ll try to extend his personal streak to 5.
