Rangers 4, Capitals 1

The Rangers needed to get out of the gate early in this series lest they give Washington any hope. With the considerable help of the fourth line, that goal was achieved.

Scoring started early in the second period with a goal by future all-star Rempe (1) at 04:17 from the left post on a beautiful pass from Vesey (1). Goodrow (1) also made a nice play getting the puck to Vesey. The Garden was set to explode after any Ranger score but the decibel level was even higher with Rempe doing it.

Less than a minute later, at 04:50, Panarin (1) wristed one past Lindgren, assisted by Trocheck (1) and Lafreniere (1). Lafreniere made the play by taking the puck away from a Washington player with a hard check on the corner boards before sending it off to Trocheck.

Less than two minutes later, at 06:23, Vesey (1) scored from above the slot on a wrist shot. The play developed quickly off a Goodrow (2) faceoff win, with an unrecorded assist by Rempe’s elbow which impeded a Capital’s player from reaching Vesey.

The Rangers napped a little bit after that goal and gave one back in short order at 07:31 to Fehervary (1) who deflected in a Terrible Tom Wilson shot. 3-1 after two is how the period would end.

The Rangers controlled the situation well in the third. Patience paid off when Zibanejad hit BFF Kreider with a long leading cross ice pass across the red line. Kreider (1) turned the speed on and put a backhand past Lindgren at the last moment. Zibanejad (1) and Roslovic (1) with the assists. 4-1 NYR as it would end.

The fourth line delivered considerable energy and points in this game and Rempe, for whatever reason, seems to get deep into opponents heads. The Rangers were disciplined in the game, even as the referees tried to make the game about them and not the players. The one slight negative is that Wilson was allowed to continue his on-ice antics, twice creaming Zibanejad and once late in the game hitting Shesterkin on his back with his stick (and not in a cross check manner).* The latter play did result in Schneider getting in a late scuffle with Wilson but it looks like it will take a Trouba or Rempe levelling Wilson to put an end to his nonsense.

*Upon further review, in slow motion on YouTube, Wilson’s first chop catches the top of the crossbard, the subsequent attempts didn’t make it thanks to Schneider, though from TV broadcast the camera angle sure made it look like Wilson made contact. So attempted nastiness with his stick. Still needs to be taught a good lesson!

  1. Think it will be hard for Laviolette to make any change to lines after a win. But would not be surprised if game 4 saw Rempe and Roslovic come out and Brodude and Chytil go in. Game 3 usually a bruiser, especially if underdog is down 2-0 so Rempe will be in lineup for that for sure.

  2. thought roslovic was active on the forcheck and winning some puck possession and using edges to creat some space. His speed pushes the slower capital back.

    would keep lines as is

so frustrating that Wilson does worse things than rempe and yet no calls from ref. He’s also a coward picking on non fighters his whole career.

rempe did good not to take mcilwrath invitation up 3-1 late

  3. Didnt one of the great bastions of sport journalism recently declare Caps’ depth superior to the Rangers? I guess we’ll see but NYR 4th line certainly made its own case yesterday.

  4. Great write-up, Beez. Laff check a beaut; Wilson cracking on our goalie’s (whatever the f..k his name is) *Avery* lower back; 4th Line magic. I much prefer hard-nosed play and BIG hitting to fistfights, must admit, but sometimes you just have to stand up for yourself.

  5. beeze – Wilson hit the crossbar, not shesty, late in the third. Still, it didn’t stop Schneider from giving Wilson the business. Miller jumped in as well. I’ve noticed that since Miller kicked Marino’s azz during the devils’ line brawl he’d much more physical assertive. Seems a much needed confidence boost for the lad.

  6. E3, think you are right – the first chop blade hit the cross bar and the ones after Schneider was able to prevent the stick from coming down. At the least, the intent seemed to be there!

  7. Dream: NYR should win the next two, Caps throw everything at them in Game 4 and eke out a victory, NYR finish up at home.

Real: NYR let them hang around tomorrow long enough and Caps win in OT. NYR win Game 3 and let off the gas in Game 4 before winning the next two. I have to endure Caps horn guy for max three games.

Also not sure why this is, but he has a reputation (ex. the Sportscenter comments I referenced in the previous thread).

  9. Rempe had a tremendous impact on the ice, the team wants him out there.

Kids a center as is Edstrom. Your bottom 6 centers for the next 5 years

  10. nice recap Beezle… that was a great play by Laffy on check and takeaway on Bread goal. Also Remper did make a nice hockey play on the goal. Did a nice pivot to face net and open up for a shot instead of trailing off into corner .

  11. Here’s the big question we need to ask. Do we want the Canes to annihilate the fog horns in 4 games or do we want this stretched out so we have a worn out Cane team ???

  12. Canes 4 unanswered goals now lead with 2 min to go.

shots at one point were 36- 12… Foghorns 1 shot in 3rd period. Hey remember how everyone told us how great and terrifying they were a week ago?

  13. Foghorns blow a 3-0 lead by literally trying the same crap they did in the regular season at UBS versus the Rangers.

this time, standing around an entire 3rd period plus like human pilons in front of “Varly” didn’t work. It’s friggin playoffs on the road!

  14. In my heart, I was hoping for the Islanders to lose 10-0 in 4 straight games, so they could hold the record for worst playoff series loss in hockey history. In my head, I was hoping for 7 extremely physical, extremely emotionally draining, triple OT games, with each team knocking out player after player from the other team each game, so all that’s left is two teams made up of AHL call ups. Have I mentioned how much I hate the Islanders? it would be helpful if they can at least manage two wins in this series, but I don’t think that is happening. Another reason to hate them, they never help us!!

  15. Rempe knew mom was watching so he had to behave himself. He’s a good kid who’s having a lot of fun. I think he loosens the group up as well. They don’t grip the sticks as tightly.

  16. The SOGs were like 38-12. You need to put up more of a fight than that. Patty Roy is doing the best he can with the roster. I was watching the Knicks mostly, but every time I flipped it on there was a siege in the Isles end. They may get lucky and win one game in the horse barn. Rangers need to get it done quickly so they aren’t burned out for the Canes.

  17. Lindy Ruff back with Buffalo. They should just name him coach for life and get it over with. He just looks so good behind that bench.

If Ranger’s learned anything from last year we will soon find out. Do not think series is over. Play every shift hard and win. It is a long road to a Cup and their journey has just begun.

  18. Fishsticks aren’t just going away and neither are the Caps. The Rangers were playing “perfect hockey” against the Devils last year until they weren’t. Then proceeded to humiliate themselves getting shut out in two of three.

Of course those Devils were a far more effective team than these Caps, but the Rangers still have a big something to prove that they can play hard and disciplined through the series.

  19. good for ruff.

he was great as rangers assistant and got a raw deal with being fired in NJ with how that team was built and the injuries.

hope he puts the Sabres into the playoffs again finally!

  21. Need Azzdancers to stand up and take a couple to extend that series. They don’t have enough skill to beat the Canes forecheck.

Metro is/was super weak this season. Factor that into ECF match up.

it seems that we had about 145 k in cap room at end of season. so i presume that can be netted against the 512 k (+ 25 k) to reduce that a bit. unless it’s already netted?

and we had about 611 k hitting this years cap from the previous year.

  24. Question — probably a stupid one but I’ll ask anyway — do you think the Rangers (and other teams not playing) watched the Canes/Isles last night, and if so, what was the reaction, if any?

Rangers really should win tonight, btw.

  28. Hey AA. There’s a big team store on the ground floor at the arena. Meet me in front of it after the first intermission…or the second. Whichever is easier for you. If that doesn’t work, my seats are section 334, row 2, seats 14 and 15. I’ll look for your Ranger hat. I’ll be wearing Panther gear with Rangers underneath. Lol
