Rangers 3, Capitals 1

On a mild spring evening in our nation’s capitol, the Rangers encountered a Capitals team that looked as if some of the players were ranking members in the House and Senate. After trailing very briefly at the start of the game, the Rangers never looked back.

Carlson (1) got the Caps their only goal at 05:34 of the first period on a long distance shot below the blue line and above the slot. It did not look deflected and Shesterkin made no move on it, doing his best Statue of Liberty. Between periods commentators claimed that Phil Niekro was resurrected and slapped a knuckler towards the goal. 🤷‍♀️

The Washington lead was short lived, a total of 34 seconds. Kreider (2) with a tip-in from BFF Zibanejad (3) and Roslovic (2). With the game tied at one at 07:58, Ryan Lindgren took an intentional cross checking penalty behind the net in order to get the Rangers PK unit on the ice. A wise choice as it took only ten seconds for Goodrow (1) to beat Charlie Lindgren from the slot off a Trocheck (3) pass past the very tired looking Ovechkin. Trouba (1) also got an assist on the play. 2-1 NYR after one.

Before moving on, once again Rempe was in the mix and causing chaos on the ice. This time with a booming hit on defenseman van Riemsdyk on the back boards. Unfortunately for Rempe, the puck was long gone and he was rightly written an interfernce citation. Unfortunately for van Riemsdyk, Rempe has 5″ and 55 lbs on him. Looking at the play in slow motion, some may argue for additional discipline because there was contact with the head. However, the primary contact was pretty much all of van Riemsdyk – his head between the numbers and Rempe’s armpit and his shoulder hip/butt high. Rempe did not appear to get elbows or stick high and van Reimsdyk definitely did not look both ways before crossing the street. The wildcard is that van Riemsdyk did not return to the game so who knows what the NHL will do.

The second period was a scoreless affair until at 15:22 Trocheck (2) played role reversal on the PP with Kreider, Zibanejad (4) and Fox (1) with the assists, on a nifty give and go. 3-1 NYR and so it would end after a scoreless third period.

Shesterkin would go on to play a fine game after the sleepy goal to start the game and, overall, the Rangers played a smart game, limiting what Washington could do and just waiting to capitalize on their mistakes. As to the Caps, they would be better off giving Ovi a blanky and sending him up to the press box for a nap.

Game Notes: Kreider recorded his 67th career playoff point (42 goals, 25 assists in 110 postseason games) and tied Rod Gilbert (34 goals, 33 assists in 79 playoff games) for third place on the Rangers’ all-time playoff points list. Shesterkin (16 playoff wins) tied John Davidson for fifth most in team history.

Game 4 is Sunday night in DC at 8:00 PM EDT on TBS (not TNT), truTV, MAX, MNMT, MSG and MSGSN. Expect another bruiser of a game!

  1. The Huggies, k’andre, and goodrow all born again so far in this series. Wennberg checking line has checked well, much more effective than one would have expected? Janice Rossi continues to be mostly an empty sweater on Huggy Right, but it hasn’t mattered much – yet. Still think he’s the best option to come out for a spell when/if Chytil is ready to roll.

  2. Besides the ” whoops” goal, our goalie was outstanding yesterday. The team played fast and determined and they were disciplined all night.

Special teams have been great. All in all; so far so good.

Hope Rempe does not get suspended. He is so much bigger then everyone else almost every check looks questionable to crappy NHL refs. He does have an effect on games. It is nice to have him on our team dishing out hits instead of Rangers being the ones being hit.

Have to give a shout out to Miller and Schneider. Since they have been together both of them are playing better. Having been on Miller’s case for years,it is nice to watch a number of games where he looks more and more like a rising star on defense. Also since the pairing he just does not seem to make has many glaring errors. That is wonderful for him and the team.

Last but not least have to give kudos to our coach having the brains to see what a lot of us saw after Trouba was hurt and sticking with 79 and 4 has a tandem. I do not think our former coach would have done that.

Sorry for the length, but this is what HAPPY looks like.

On to a late Sunday victory.

Well done, enjoyed the read. I can’t see how they could lose to the Caps Sunday. Somebody tell me I’m right, I’ve been disappointed so may times before.

Agree that 79/4 pair has played pretty well, 2 EV GA each, though #4 gets tagged with one last night on that first goal. Lindrgren and Fox 1 each and none for Trouba and Gus.

  5. i have doubts as to ovi breaking TGO’s goal record? He looks slower than mud. If the craps play him 18 minutes + next season they’ll never make the playoffs.

  6. couple things.

Trocheck I believe admitted to tipping the shot that beat Shesty causing it to knuckle more. Like an offspeed pitch Shesty lunged his blocker and mistimed the swing. Rest of game he was all world

Rempe hit clean. Even bissoneette thought so intermission and he doesn’t like the rangers. Puck was only “long gone” on slow mo replay. Timing wise it was in the rules of engagement and the defensman was eligible to be hit

rempe was skating 21st (I thought norm said he couldn’t skate). He didn’t charge the guy as he coasted from the dots in

  7. i will respectfully disagree about Janice

I think roslovic has raised his game

that line is now contributing 5v5 and he is working hard at gaining posession and making good passes. His speed is apparent. Sure could he have shot on a play or too, yes. But his cycle game looks good.

  8. I respect your disagreement! And I don’t think it’s a coincidence the Huggies have been playing their best hockey of the year. I do think he’s been about replacement level or a bit above (since he largely keeps up with the play, unlike some other options that have tried there) but maybe that’s just what they need.

  9. OV only had 12 minutes of EV TOI last night. The PP time inflated his overall TOI. He does look shot.

Trouba still looks like he is hurting. That won’t change until the offseason. He did make one pass to a Cap a few feet inside the blue line from behind his goal line. He has done that often enough during his tenure with the Rangers it ought to be called a “Trouba” just as Pouliot earned the name for an O zone penalty. That is a lack of vison on his part rather than an injury. Props to Lavy et al. for changing the pairings and to Trouba taking one for the team as a captain should.

  10. Rempe is just below the dot inside the circle, defender also goes another six-eight feet along the boards before they collide. Not saying he should have, but Rempe might have been able to pull up, at least a little. It could be too that Rempe didn’t realize the puck was gone given body position of both players and where the stick and puck were. I’d guess that call gets made elsewhere on the ice to other players a good portion of the time, I think Gravy said pre-2000 that hit was fine but that was then.

I kept telling people Rempe was a lot faster than his turkey vulture stride makes it appear.

  11. easy to see why this is controversial. When I watch it, I see VR move the puck the clock read 7:59/8, then Rempe who was already lining him up crushes him the clock still reads 7:58/7. So it’s like maybe a second and change.

It’s a very fast game. If you need to slow it down to the point where you’re counting milliseconds and going frame by frame in the studio, that’s not going to look like a late hit to everyone.

  14. Rempe’s scouting report indicated the same problem. He was constantly penalized & suspended. What’s the freeken answer. Usually in other sports it’s an advantage. Can he play stooping a foot b4 he hits. In the future more taller players are going to play hockey.

  16. Here is a bunch of GoodGollyMissMollie Rempe stuff:

Does Matt Rempe mind being the #NYR villain?

“I got no issue with it,” No. 73 said. “In New York, they love it when I’m playing hard. If we go on the road and they don’t like it, I mean, you’re playing hard, you’re playing physical. It’s good. I have no issue with that.”

Has it been difficult for #NYR Matt Rempe to block out the noise?

“No, not at all,” he said. “I feel like I just play my game. If it’s more attention, I have no issue with that. If there’s good media, bad media, whatever, I don’t care… It is what is it. I’m just going to go play my game. If I’m being effective and making big hits & clean hits and hard hits, then other teams aren’t going to like that. But I got to make sure it’s clean. I thought that was clean yesterday. Obviously, never want to see a guy get hurt, but I thought it was clean.”

Does #NYR Matt Rempe try to stay off social media amid all the attention?

“I don’t try to stay off social media,” he said. “I was playing Halo with Kreids and them last night. First time I ever played that, I got killed 68 times. It was a bad performance.”

Is it easy for #NYR Matt Rempe to turn down Tom Wilson and Dylan McIlrath?

“I think it’s a learning process for me with that because I’m trying to now pick my spots, trying to gain momentum. Are we up? What’s the series like? Is that needed there or that type of thing. It’s hard to say no sometimes, does that make sense, through that. I’m learning, that’s part of the job as well. I gotta pick my spots. I gotta help. Our job as a team is to win, and I gotta make sure that I do right by the team always.”

Refs told Matt Rempe he was called for interference because the hit was “a tad bit too late.”

  17. DOES MATT REMPE #73 NY RANGERS PLAN TO FIGHT HIS WAY INTO THE HALL OF FAME AND IF SO, WHY?

“I think it’s often a good idea to shoot for the top, so, yes, if that’s what you’re asking me. I want to be the first to get inducted before the age of 25 and I want to do it with knuckle sandwiches and the occasional goal. You don’t like it, sue me.”

  21. If Rangers get a few goal lead, you can bet the house that Wilson will try to take out Panarin, ZBad, Fox, Laf or whoever else he can. Since the league allows Wilson to do whatever he wants, he will take liberties and try and take someone out weather or not the Rangers have the lead. Rangers better have their heads up when he is on the ice. Though I prefer Rempe not to fight, it may be a good idea for Rempe to fight him if for no other reason then to keep him off the ice for 5 minutes.

  22. well, the Foghorns made it through one period of OT.

Carolina outshot the Foghorns. I had to turn the sound down because the Assdancers fans are just obnoxious razzing the linesmen on every icing, singing “ole ole” as if they’re Montreal or Tampa, and just yelling and yelling. I couldn’t take it anymore.

it’s tremendously difficult to sweep a series, and just about every Assdancers game has been a 1 goal game affair.

canes lack size – they play hard, but I notice they don’t get to the front of the net sustained play like Rangers do.

  29. NHL Rulebook:

The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession. Obviously “immediately” isn’t a very exact term and leaves it up to the Refs discretion. 1.5-2 seconds is what is usually quoted to players from coaches when they are learning, but that’s a guideline and not a rule.

Rempe was already lined up for the hit and didn’t alter his path to initiate contact and it was less than a second after VRD moved the puck

the leaving feet was part of collision

interference it was not and the national studio had multiple people call it a clean hit

Called because he was big and Ramz was hurt

”tad late” interpretation means rempe is getting a different rule book than most other players

Ovie crushed I beleive wennberg later than that hit without a call

And don’t get me started on the legal body check that Cuylle got called

Or when Gustafsen got called for slashing when the guy was holding his stick with three fingers

Be sure we’re gonna face another game with six penalty kills, and one power-play most likely. The league wants more games to make more money They hate

  31. I just wish there was consistency with the calls. I would ALWAYS want them to let the players play but If they’re going to call Ticky tack BS calls then own it. I had an umpire when i was catching in college that would tell me “ I have a wide strike zone so adjust “ Tell the teams pregame and let the Players adjust. The fans can be annoyed and know that they’ll be a new crew the next day I get that they are human but it just drives me crazy how things are penalty one time and then not a penalty the next. how is anybody supposed to know?

  32. And speaking of erratic calls, I’m reminded of a story Ralph Kiner, old-time Pirates slugger told many times. As a rookie, he came to bat in an extended extra-inning game and the first pitch was a foot wide and called a strike. Kiner exited the box and stared at the Ump, who declared: ’Swing the bat, son. None of us have eaten yet.’

  33. Corporal Clegg – That is not a quote from the rulebook. The actual rule book states, for Interference:

    Possession of the Puck:
The last player to touch the puck, other than the goalkeeper, shall be considered the player in possession. The player deemed in possession of the puck may be checked legally, provided the check is rendered immediately following his loss of possession.

23/24 NHL Rule Book pg 87

Elsewhere it further defines the term as:

The last player to physically touch the puck with his stick or body shall be considered in possession of the puck. (NOTE 1) A player can have possession of the puck without control, but he cannot have control of the puck without possession.

23/24 NHL rule book pg. 214

Also adding this (as he has been called a few times)

42.1 Charging – A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates, jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner. Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.

23/24 NHL rule book pg. 74

I am unable to find any defnition in the rule book for the term “immediately”

  34. yeh. I think my quote was one sentence of an old rulebook and then someone’s commentary on Reddit. Lol

but either way. It wasn’t a penalty by the standard in which most hits are called especially in the playoffs. Even cuylle or Laffy all season would h it someone twice as long after the puck left a stick.

it’s just inconsistent and not well defined.

the seconds after have been talked about when on past player saftey videos when explaining suspensions etc
