Rangers 4, Capitals 2

In a nationally televised Sunday night playoff elimination game against the Capitals, the Rangers did just enough at the right moments to leave Washington with a victory and arrange for tee times for the Capitals. The Rangers will now move on, at some point, to a second round matchup against the CAR/NYI winner. This was the first sweep of a playoff series by the Rangers since 2007 (Thrashers). [If you want to watch a short video condensed game/highlights, see end of post, about 10m long]

The game could not have started any better for the Rangers, who got on the sheet at just 00:57 with an unassisted goal by Kakko (1). Really, the Caps Jensen should get an assist for a give away that fed a wide open Kakko in the slot. Put the man on your holiday card list!

Washington was not going to go down easy and they managed to tie the game at 14:54 on another goal by Fehevary (2). The danger of starting a very green rookie is that they will make a mistake and this one was on Rempe. While he did come back to the blue line to meet the incoming Fehevary, he failed to stick with him, leading to a relatively uncontested slot shot.

With the Rangers not looking in top form, special teams would once again prove critical. Just before the first period would end, at 19:44, Trocheck (3) from the doorstep for a PPG, assisted by Zibanejad (5) and Panarin (1). The order of play as they entered the offensive zone was an impressive 20-23-16-23-10-93-16-goal! 2-1 after one.

Lapierre (1) would tie the game at 2-2 just 07:48 into the second, basically walking in untouched from outside the blue line as a gassed Kreider, Lindgren and Roslovic were unable to do much of anything to stop him. The rest of the second period would see a lot more Ranger struggles, but Washington was unable to take advantage. 2-2 after two.

After a stern talking to in the locker room, the Rangers came out for the third period with a bit more jump and focus to their game. After Oshie took a high sticking penalty on Trocheck (yes, the refs finally called him for an errant stick), the Ranger PP came through again. This time Panarin (2) at 03:21 with a sweeping shot from the circle after getting lost behind the goal line. Zibanejad (6) and Fox (2) with the assists.

The Rangers managed to protect their one goal lead the remainder of the third period through some heavy Washington pressure as the clock was winding down. A late power play looked anything but with the Caps getting a number of late chances. But deadline arrival Roslovic (2) came through with another timely goal, this time an ENG PP at 19:09 to send the Caps to the golf course.

The Caps just did not have the horses to get it done last night or the entire series. It was not for lack of trying, they certainly put in the effort. Game four had a lot more in common with some ugly mid-season Ranger wins than the first three games of this series; Shesterkin came up big when he had too. Good to get the sweep and move on, but this was a likely loss against a more skilled team. NYR should get roughly a week off to rest (looking at you Mr. Trouba) and practice.

As to series performances – Zibanejad led the team with seven points (1G, 6A), taking his game up a notch and providing the leadership that will be necessary if this is truly a cup year. Trocheck was a beast. Roslovic, who had fallen off late in the season and was looking like a possible dog house candidate, came though with timely goals. The third and fourth lines played well and were critical to the series win. The Miller/Schneider pairing played strong and should remain a fixture going forward. In addition, that pairing resulted in just a 2:35 ES TOI differential between high and low.

Notes: The Rangers are the sixth Presidents’ Trophy winner to sweep its opening-round series. The others were the 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche, the 2000-01 Avalanche, the 1998-99 Dallas Stars, the 1993-94 Rangers, and the 1985-86 Edmonton Oilers.

  2. “The Rangers might have won this series because of their edge in high-end talent but their focus and mindset were equal assets in this sweep. The Rangers didn’t necessarily dazzle anyone in this series that seemed like a taffy-pull, they didn’t necessarily dazzle anyone through the regular season, but here they are.”

  11. I think   a very important part of this season has been Vincent Trocheck on the powerplay. Most times he wins the faceoff and Rangers get the puck and start moving it around like it is on a string.

I wonder if this improvement is a direct result of having Michael Pecca as a coach. Our faceoff’s have been crap forever. Amazing what good coaching will do for you. Also noticed a lot of line mixing in the 3rd period yesterday. Again good coaching and something we as Ranger fans are not used to.

With all that praise; they have to know after looking at the tape that there is alot of room for improvement. Take a well deserved day off, then hit the ice for working on all those things they did during the series that will come back to bite them against Carolina.

  12. Jeff, Trocheck’s always been a solid FO guy and has been 55-56% the past several seasons, which was already remarkable. Going almost 60% this year and doing it an all situations is crazy. But meanwhile Mika was right around his career 49% gives me the impression it’s the player not the coach

Can our boys do it? Do they have the intestinal fortitude? Have they learned lessons of seasons’ past?

  16. so one series out of 8 has a 2-2 after 4 games. that series will go through friday and maybe even sunday

4 games tonight. all at 3-1 so could be plenty of handshakes tonight. 3 of the 4 ahead 3-1 tonight are home.

since they probably won’t schedule round 2 until all series are done or almost done i don’t see our rangers playing before sunday. and reason it could be that early is garden also has knicks and there’s a billy joel concert next week too on thursday.

They will be NOTHING like the Caps. I worry because our boys don’t perform particularly too well against teams that relentlessly forecheck.

They beat them 2 years ago. Can they strap their big boy pants on and contain the forecheck?

I suppose the good news is that we’ll have home ice advantage the entire series 😁

I’m hearing rumblings that Islander players are not very happy with Roy. Sounds like he might be like Torts and may have the same limited shelf life of 2-3 years, since you can’t trade the entire team.

One of these first rounds has got to go the distance, right? Means Rd 2 shouldn’t start until Tuesday @ MSG?

X-rays were all negative and he is feeling better today. • Brett Pesce (lower-body injury) is out of a walking boot. If everything goes as expected, he should play games in Round 2. He may not be ready for Game 1, but the team is hoping to have him available at some point during the series. • CT scans and MRIs revealed that Jesper Fast suffered an injury to a muscle in his neck during the team’s regular season finale.

If you’re getting one of your bona fide top players back fine but Lav has a team that just swept the first round wouldn’t be good to change it for a Chytil.

paramount sold Madison Square Garden (MSG) to Cablevision and ITT Corporation in August of 1994!!!!!!! (Hmmmm)

In 1999, Dolan was given an increased role in managing Cablevision’s sports properties and is now the primary manager of these assets. The teams under his domain include most notably the National Basketball Association‘s New York Knicks, the National Hockey League‘s New York Rangers, the Women’s National Basketball Association‘s New York Liberty, and the American Hockey League‘s Hartford Wolf Pack. Of these teams, the ONLY team to win a championship is the Wolf Pack, who won the Calder Cup in the 1999–2000 AHL season.

  36. wwpd I think I was the one who wrote “in case of emergency” with Chytil. Still believe that to be the case but we will see what coaches do. Chytil is weak defensively and not likely to want to get too involved in dirty areas. Move him over the summer while he is “healthy”.

  37. Thanks Beezle. LaGreca also says so as heresay. Probably got it from you. Reported usage at practice does seem to confirm it.

This team won the regular season and swept its first round. It’s not mark stone or Kucherov coming back into the lineup, seems crazy to bend over backwards wedging chytil into a winning formula at this point even if he is a good kid,who let’s face it wasn’t showing much during his early games played this year and ended up gifting us with one of the best performing lines in NYR history once Trocheck moved up between the Bread boys.

After Stanley Cup victory Rangers sent all of us season ticket holders a lucite plaque with a duplicate of our ticket. I still have mine hung on the wall. Here is the kicker. The price for that game was $ 46.00.

I do remember my partner and I being pissed at the High price.

When they make it this year I will not be shocked if the same ticket is not over $ 1000.00.

I know it has been 30 years and there is inflation, but MSG has been screwing fans for years;maybe that is why I have not been there since they retired Jean Ratelle number 19.

    Beezlesays: Edit

I think it would be crazy to bring Chytil back now. He hasn’t had game contact since November. Nobody knows what his noggin can take. What would be the effect on team moral if he goes down again during a game, especially if at a critical point? Add him to the roster with a large “only break in case of emergency”

  41. Beyond the question about his ability to withstand the physical play, all he is going to bring is potentially a bit more offense to a team that seems to have quite a bit of that but at the expense of physicality, defense and a lot fewer face off wins. If they go in a scoring drought, consider it. But not until then, for me at least.

  43. Norm Don’t know how many Rangers games you’ve watched all year but Trocheck is the permanent center of Panaran & Lafreniere line. He’s a good part of the Rangers success this year. Chytil might work well between Cuylle & Kakko or a wild right Wing to our 1st line.
