SN – soludarity. This stubborn fool didn’t want to go the word doc route via cut and paste. Too curious as to WTF happened last night. Lo and behold – the same ******* thing happened again. Fortunately I only got about a forth into the third WTF and decided to do a test publish. But my words were not visible anywheres in the world. Glory be, where you words at?
Damn it, E3. I’ve been banging on the other wtf thread. Wicky, faceoffs aren’t important. didn’t you know? It’s down there in the pits of meaningless abilities along with defensive play by dman, physicality and standing up for one another.
The truth of the matter is that this D was overachieving for quite some time. Lundqvist has to be held accountable for playing mediocre (not average. mediocre. maybe teams win with average goalies but not mediocre ones) hockey but the bigger problem is the need to rebuild or at least shake up the blue line Quick break down:
Your best Dman has no one to play with that he doesn’t have to babysit defensively.
You’ve got a rookie being dealt all kinds of responsibility he’s not always able to handle.
Staal is your second best Dman and is out with like his 8th concussion and 100th injury in the last few seasons. Meanwhile Ryan Graves doesn’t even get a single game for the coach to see what he’s got.
You’ve got the 7th man Clendening who is a borderline NHL guy regardless of his fit into AV’s system.
And most importantly, You’ve got two ANCHORS in the top four right now in Klein and Girardi, being dished very important minutes by a coach with less balls than he apparently has options on D within the organization. I think it’s telling that Ryan Graves hasn’t come up at all for a look, I think it’s possible that AV could be using Klein while he isnt 100%. That could and should have ramifications.
I don’t want to drag this point out any more but obviously the defense needs some upgrading.
LOL no problem. Sorry you keep losing your review.
Repost 2-
Can’t say it’s the ugliest loss that I’ve seen while playing in Montreal (for Hank OR the team) And I have said that Lundqvist is in the worst stretch of his career at this point in time. But damn, I can feel the stress through my computer screen. A lot of disgust which is very understandable but let’s be real the way Carp would if he were at the helm: 1- Lundqvist isn’t going to Hartford, getting traded or left exposed in the waiver draft. You can come up with reasons why it would make sense for the rest of your lives but you’re not convincing the GM or the coach that you’re right.
and 2- There will be no fire sale. This coach has constructed his team with his system in mind and they’ll live or die by it for the rest of the season.
I remember accountability being one of the main reasons Torts was the guy that replaced Renney. AV has been here for a while. His system his mentality his approach has paid dividends at times, but this team has shown itself not ready to play a few too many times this season and the breakdowns defensively need to be addressed. That doesn’t mean go yell at them like Torts would, but it’s time to stop this “live and die with the veterans” stuff. It didn’t get them anywhere last year and it’s not working this year either. Guys need to sit, guys need to have their roles adjusted. Another year of one and done in the post season because he didn’t have any options other than the ones he chose isn’t going to be good enough. At least it shouldn’t be.
lost in this train wreck of a weekend – Pavel Buchnevich 2 assists in his first two games back and played nearly 18 minutes last night after AV said he wouldn’t play back to backs.
One of the problems is that they are paying their goalie like a superstar and he’s playing like a third stringer. The Bruins made the same mistake with Rask. Now what do they do? Sure, they can play Raanta when he comes back from his injury, but then there’s Lundqvist sitting on the bench taking up cap space that they could be using to shore up the defense.
Lame segue from this year’s turn-the-other-cheek Rangers to a truly great American. This Trump-voting choirboy was reminded this morning by singing Lift Every Voice and Sing (tricky bass part) of the miracle that was Martin Luther King, Jr. Happy MLK Day to those of you who celebrate it!
Wicky, as we Hammers supporters used to sing when Arsenal visited Upton Park back in the day (to the tune of quarter-hourly bell chimes) “Bor-ing Ars-nle, Ars-nle Boring!”. They’re not that any more in the Wenger era, but, still, Down the Arse, says me. I’m forever blowing bubbles.
Buek may be the “defensive coach” but ultimately they all play within the coach’s system on the coach’s team. Once upon a time an assistant coach named Mike Sullivan was sent packing with fans irate about his putrid job with the PP. Joke of a coach. wearing his joke of a ring. head coach= guy in charge.
Yes, BDL. And Buchnevich may make MZA expendable. That upgrades your defense ( short term), brings you a reliable ( preferably young) third line center, and leaves a lot of money to sign long term R side D-man to play with McD.
Interesting thinking ilb,
I have felt for most of the season, that Zucc was the guy to move for D help. You have to get a center if you are trading Stepan.
Of course, BDL. Preferably young, solid third liner. You can argue that they can try Miller at 3rd line center position. I think Miller should play 2nd line minutes, and with Hayes.
Agree on Miller. Nota third line center. Top 6 player. I like the outside the box thinking. One thing is for sure, they need at least one good Dman, if not two.
ILB, I’ve looked at the situation as exactly that. Hayes has shown that he can be the number two guy behind Zibanejad and with the additions of Buchnevich and Vesey I think Zucc is prime trade bait considering he is a help now kind of addition.
As for a third line center you could always try to acquire a guy like Hanzal at the deadline. UFA to be, currently half the cost of Stepan, more physical and a big upgrade in the circle.
Don’t get me wrong I’d love to see hanzal on this team for faceoffs alone, but coyle would be a great young add. Skilled, has size, not afraid to stick his nose in there.
Speaking of righty D, reality is the rangers will probably need 3. I mean they only have 2 now (no offence to clendening) and both of those have under performed. Girardi will probably be bought out and Klein exposed or possibly traded (I would think after the season). You add a righty now (by trade deadline), go with the other two rest of season and try to acquire your other 2 via trade and free agency in off season.
With as well as Minnesota is playing, I think you’d be hard pressed to get coyle and dumba from them during the season unless the package just floored them (would stepan be enough to do it?).
Bdl
I don’t think it can be during the season. No one here seems too interested but I’d be all over gudbranson in Vancouver (who would be an in season upgrade). He will be an unrestricted free agent at seasons end and I’d try to keep him.
–
Stone in Arizona is also another potential in season upgrade as well as johns from Dallas.
We ain’t getting Dumba & Coyle for Step & Zucc not happening! But I agree Step and Zucc are the guys to move to upgrade the D. Unfortunately the King is no longer the King so it won’t make any difference!
St Pete
If you add more defencively responsible players to augment some of the less defencively responsible players you have now, it would help.
–
Coach also needs to modify his loosey goosey style to a little slower more controlled one.
I can’t see anyway to fix this SN at least not this year! This group is not winning a cup. So maybe selling at the deadline is the way to go! “For Sale” Nash, Step, & Zucc.
Wick just saying if things go south and I hope they don’t, and selling is the way to go than trading those 3 is the logical move! But I do believe Gorton isn’t blind he knows how to fix this just may take awhile!
The idea of trading Zucc, and Stepan is about helping this years team. Not to be sellers. And trading Nash? Well, let’s just say I think that is a really bad idea.
Farts may be the funniest thing ever. Especially when you rip a silent burner in the elevator. Once you know that the hot scorching wind has been released, you try not to act obvious as you know everyone else is getting a nice taste.
ilb – do you think they are winning a cup or even getting to ECF Championship series this year or next with this lineup and the Metro Division being stacked.
Need to reboot with new D, not sure how to do it with Anchor contracts (including the goalie)
Thanks Uncle Glennie!!
Today, I experienced my buttocks, close to the anus, vibrating against each other at such a high frequency as to create an audible sound. The vibration was caused by the rush of gas released by the aforementioned sphincter, such that the odor accompanying the digestion of food that I ate earlier was distinctly noticeable. I laughed and laughed, because it reminded me of the first time I noticed the phenomenon in kindergarten. The verb describing the event I just described is onomatopoeic, so I like to say it a lot: fart, fart, fart. Have any of you experienced it before? Talking about it never seems to get old. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
Of course they wont be sellers, but if the Rangers want to build a legitimate contender, they ought to sell. It’s obvious that Henrik cant mask the defense issues on a nightly basis. And even when healthy, the offense isnt scoring 5 goals a game in the playoffs as they did in the beginning of the regular season.
How are the Rangers not contenders? Against what team out there could they not win four out of seven? How many months is it again, before the playoffs?
They are not contending for anything with the current roster, a defense in shambles and Henrik unable to mask the defensive woes. Don’t delude yourself otherwise.
contenders for what? Pretenders more like it. Not a complete reload, just selling vets to cap bottom teams or Cup wanna bes.
Plenty of good young talent on team, need to get rid of dead weight
Monk, I appreciate that the Rangers aren’t playing well at the moment, but I still don’t see any other dominant teams. There are some hot goalies, to be sure, but being hot in January, while better than the alternative, has not much to do with the playoffs. It’s all about getting Zibanejad and Staal back, seeing what you’ve got, and trying to stay healthy the rest of the way. If Lundqvist hasn’t found it by April or thereabouts, then I agree it’s a non-starter.
Gorton’s opinions > all of yours.
Lmao@ sellers.
Minny isn’t making their team worse to help make us better. Hanzal would be a rental for the remainder of this year.
Mark Stone= righty dman. Nothing special but much more realistic than the Miny deal. Also keep in mind Stepans contract isn’t exactly one that most GMs would be jumping to acquire
1. The Kang
2. Don Vito Girardi
3. Stalled
4. Das Boot Bitte Fuggenheim Klein
5. Pirri unless he practices 100 shots per day from the top of the right circle
6. Zuccini
7. Rocky Stepan
I like AV, and think he’s done a great job in his tenure here, but one thing I miss about Tortorella is his ability to make all players accountable. AV just does not have that in his coaching armamentarium.
Imo, and some of may choose not to agree–to many of the losses suffered by the Rangers this season have been either due to (1) not being prepared to play, ie., “not showing up”, or (2) goaltending mediocrity.
very rarely have I seen a loss where the Rangers have played as well as they are capable, yet we’re still outplayed by opposition.
Norm – I reread your 8:52. From my experience, it’s only when I’m really uptight and nervous is the sound high frequency….like an alto……. When things are going well I notice that it’s more of a deep bass.
Any franchise (including ours) who are sellers and not selling because they are Cap stuck and have a number of young RFAs or UFAs to pay, are not selling, they’re unloading.
regarding Mcilrath, without mentioning him by name you certainly seem to be talking about him when you suggest AV should sit miller for defending a teammate. Correct me if I’m wrong but Mcilrath was the last Ranger to be scratched when he did the same.
Alex
It had nothing (nada, zippo, not a thing) to do with mcilrath. And I mean nothing (quite honestly I hadn’t even thought about him, not a blip on the radar). It was an indictment of AV and the marshmallow soft, vanilla team he seems to want to put on the ice every game. He is so determined to keep the team neutered that it wouldn’t shock me to see him bench/scratch anyone that showed any sort of physical play.
–
Is your last name mcilrath? I mean you are literally the only person that brings him up. Either that or you couldn’t be more wrong about “thinking” you know something about me that you clearly do not.
“Is your last name mcilrath? I mean you are literally the only person that brings him up. Either that or you couldn’t be more wrong about “thinking” you know something about me that you clearly do not.”
Alex: I am McIlrath.
EddieJ: I am McIlrath!
E3: I am Mcilrath.
Coos: Hey, McIlrath- Have you seen my hockey stick? This one has white tape on the blade and mine had black tape.
E3: I’m still looking for my @$#!% game review!
Good morning, boneheads!
Happy MLK Day! Sometimes we forgot it’s not just a day off. It’s about American people. That’s what drives America. Extraordinary people like him is the reason why this country is one the best places to live on this planet.
Hear Hear ilb2001! Good morning Boneheads! Tomorrow night could be an interesting game pucks hitting the back of the bet at both ends! 6-5 Rangers 6-5 Stars?
I know I am old, and what I am about to say is a get off my lawn moment, but I despise the you tube video or still shots people are posting.
No get off my lawn.
[repost from yesterday-wrong date!] Lame segue from this year’s turn-the-other-cheek Rangers to a truly great American. This Trump-voting choirboy was reminded this morning by singing Lift Every Voice and Sing (tricky bass part) of the miracle that was Martin Luther King, Jr. Happy MLK Day to those of you who celebrate it!
BDL, with you down the line on the incessant intrusion of these GIFs. Love the gibberish on this site when it’s home-made, not so much when it’s imported.
Every time I start feeling badly for Henrik, I temper it by thinking of the multi-million dollar digs he sold Midtown and the new multi-million dollar digs he bought in Tribeca.
Norm, was thinking of you last night watching Cheers. Rebecca was on a health-food kick and trying to get the bar regulars to eat healthy. Norm was dipping cauliflower in his beer.
BTW, with Philly falling off the map (anybody shocked?), it’s possible the Metro will only have one wild card this year. So there might not be any tanking to be done to get over to the Atlantic.
So we are all in on Hank for a while. Time for Hank to stop farting around and s**t or get off the pot. If he ever gets pulled for Hellberg we are in a world of hurt and we are back to the days after Richter got concussed. The Mike Dunham trade would be the next step.
BTW, I never feel sorry for a pro athlete. They get to play children’s games for a living and make more money in a year than most of us make in a lifetime. It’s a great gig if you can get it.
wrong if 2nd wild card comes from atlantic they cross over get top seeded metro winner assuming they have better record then montreal. if its 4 and 4 you dont stay in your div unless your 2-3 seeds
rangers need finish 4th in metro crossover get habs or finish 3rd in metro ahead of penguins who would cross over and have caps win div and we play 2nd seeded columbus. hopefully caps lose to 8th seeded team. we arent beating pens or caps no shot. anyone thinks were beating pens 4 of 7 your completely lost and delusional
I have to say I am a little surprised that Lindberg is the odd man out. I know Pirri is a PP guy, but you would be hard pressed to find one person here who thought that Pirri outplayed Lindberg.
Lindberg has outperformed Pirri, IMO, in the three zones. But the latter saved his spot with two big plays: one: drawing a penalty vs. the Leafs; two: the PP snipe vs. the Habs. I hope he keeps playing like he’s on a short leash.
Bdl
Exactly re your 11:19….I think Alex is the only one that brings him up now.
–
How the hell do you play pirri over lindberg?! This coach is terrible at line up decisions.
this coach is terrible period. be nice use a timeout settle team down saturday night. his handling of girardi and klein with clendening is so off. Av will take us no where
I don’t think this team, when completely healthy, matches up well with any of the 3 teams ahead of them in the metro (or Carolina for that matter). If I had to pick, best shot to beat any of the 3 in the first round, I like our chances against the pens the best.
Up front, when healthy, they can matchup with any team in the league. Nobody has the offensive depth the Rangers have. It’s the D that is the big issue. Do you take from Petet to pay Paul?
of course all my predictions are based on Lundqvist being a lot better. If he isn’t, then they could miss the playoffs entirely, but certainly won’t win a series.
Well all I can say is let’s hope for a productive off season because this cotton candy team isn’t going anywhere but to the first Tee! If they make the playoffs at all! If 5 hole Hank turns it around I’ll be shocked! This year is AV’s last stand!
Bdl
On paper they are….system they don’t. They’ve shown that the coach can’t make adjustments in game and if you smother their one trick, this team is toast. Only hope is a team tries to run and gun with them for a whole series…pens only team that might try it.
–
I don’t think this team can win a series (as its constructed) by playing all games grinding playoff hockey. They better hope everyone they play are dumb enough to do a track meet.
I don’t see anybody getting into a track meet with NYR, except maybe Montreal. … Pittsburgh will trap them to death again and Rush-happy Rangers will fold by refusing to get pucks deep and going to work.
I also think it would be a mistake for any team to try to bully the Rangers, soft as they may be. You want to be passive and disciplined in the neutral zone, and the Rangers will play right into your wheelhouse.
Wick – Pens and Hawks are not grinding teams. While NYR does not match up with high talent of those teams, the depth could use 3 very good lines to control puck to cover for D.
.
IMHO Oct NYR run was a bit of a mirage but once full lineup (Oscar > Puree) is back together, be curious to see if O can help alleviate obvious holes on D.
.
Rantaa update?
Team is too soft (not talking fighting) to make any real progress in playoffs without a few roster changes and a certain coach change (offseason on the latter)
Norm,
I don’t think AV is a bad coach, I think he is agood coach. Here is MY problem with AV. He has not shown the ability in game to make adjustments. And he has no flexibility within his system. He has also stuck to the rolling 4 lines, even when they didn’t have 4 lines. Ice time is also a complaint of mine. Miller, and Kreider to name two, do not get the ice that should.
The positive I see with AV are. He has brought the speed game. He has been willing to have rookies in the lineup. He does not allow the team to get to high, or low.
If AV wants to be considered a great coach, he needs to take over a struggling or middling team and turn it around. Taking a talented team which had been the POs 3 seasons in a row and continuing going to the POs is not that impressive. AV is 5-3 in PO series wins with Torts’ players. Torts was 3-3 with lesser players (Bickel, Rupp, Caber!) in his final 3 seasons.
It’s not all AV’s fault, the roster construction on the back end is weighted down with onerous contracts.
Kreider gets plenty of ice time, but he doesn’t kill penalties or end-game 6-on-5s. Miller does kill. They are 4 and 5 in TOI, behind Zucc, Step and Hayes, PK guys.
Norm
I wanted av here before he got hired, he was my first choice. He has been a huge disappointment to me since arriving. I think this team has played worse every season (points or no points) and his line up decisions and management just baffle me.
–
I agree with both bdl and SN (especially the early AV success being more attributed to torts system and guys than AV) on their posts. They basically summed up how I feel about av if you combined theirs (thanks for letting me poach yours fellas, saved me typing a ton ;)).
Torts did more with less than probably any ranger coach that I remember, even though I don’t think he was the best coach in the last 20 or so years. Torts would be in the top 3 probably…
The team has regressed mainly due to several key players getting older and injuries/blocked shots effect. The wear and tear is largely due to effects from Playing the Torts style on Girardi and Staal.
Mainly key defensemen and Henrik.
The bill is due and we are all seeing the results.
The league with the cap and draft is designed to make things cyclical. Only Pittsburgh and Chicago seem immune. So for now we’re on the downtick.
Norm
“Better than av” is a slick way to phrase that if you just want to throw out regular season wins stats as some sort of argument basis. Quite honestly I’m not sure because it depends on who’s available. I’d love to see cup winner Hartley here but that’s just an opinion of course.
–
As far as torts coaching av’s first season here comment…just look at the Gruden to Callahan raiders as a good example.
I think the downswing started last year. Note the very one sided playoff series. I don’t expect to be in the second round this year.
Do you really think Henrik and many of the defense are going to get younger, healthier and play like they did in the window where there was 2 conference finals and a cup final besides.
Love to see it but very skeptical.
Regarding the forwards we don’t have the top end talent that major contenders like Chicago, Pittsburgh and Washington have.
Most cup winners (since the lost season) either have a legit superstar forward (or two it seems more recently) or a stud d man or a smothering system with skill. I don’t think the rangers have any of those. They have a very good d man (mcdonut), a legit first line forward (with a few more that could become that), and a loosey goosey system with some skill.
After the one sided series the pens had against the Rangers in 2015, were they on the downside? No, they retooled, much like the Rangers this year. I won’t argue the D with you. It’s a definite weakness. The pens took till the middle of last season before they were able to retool. There is still time left for the Rangers to retool the D.
NYR made it to the Cup finals with 3 steady lines, a shaky D and a star goalie. The Eastern (let alone the Metro) is much, much better now than 3 seasons ago. Anything can happen in POs but would surprise me if a team like the Derbils made it in from the East this season.
My take on this year’s group and its coach: if AV can convince Miller, Kreider or Hayes–any or all of them–that they can be stars if they decide to make the necessary sacrifice, the team can go as far as it wants. Nash can help with that project, having been there. And Lundqvist needs to rediscover his art.
Let’s not forget the pens have 2 forwards better than any of ours to start with, one d man better than any of ours to start with, have players that are multi dimensional so you don’t have to use a line up spot on a “specialist”. Their players can play any “style” of game and their star players are more than willing to play beyond the whistle and lead by example (Crosby rag dolling mcdonut around the ice after a hit on a teammate immediately comes to mind). Their goaltending as it sits today is every bit as good as ours
The defense was not shaky the finals year. Not even close. Girardi and Staal were younger and Stralman was tremendous. McDonagh was McDonagh and that’s a good thing
… and yet they continue to have a stellar record, even now. …
I have said many times, the job Tortorella did with that group in 2011-12 is the best Rangers coaching job I have ever covered, which is since Freddy Shero. …
and as for the cyclical thing, well, Pittsburgh and Chicago had their down years and they were brutally down.
It still amazes me how a team loses two in a row, for the second time all season long, and it’s the end of the world with you guys. Worst team ever. Need to sell. Fire the coach. Not making the playoffs. One and done.
I’m a little slow sometimes so let me just make sure I have this straight
Rangers suck
AV sucks
Hanks sucks
Our D sucks
Our forwards are soft and underperforming
MSG is too quiet and our home fans suck
Potvin sucks
Did I miss anything?
Carp
Respectfully, it isn’t absurd if a poster has been pointing out the same flaws consistently over the past couple of seasons (faceoffs for instance). I get if with the “we are great/we suck” posters, but some here (myself included) are not in that group despite how hard others try to put us in that group.
–
I don’t think a single person that posts about the team flaws (as they see it) roots for them to lose. Being realistic about the teams shortcomings (again perceived by that individual), does not make you a bad fan, just realistic (as opposed to the this team is perfect how it is and it’s just waiting for the right moment to run the tables approach).
–
I, for one, would be ecstatic to be wrong about av, his style, and the roster as it is currently constructed and see the rangers win the cup this year!
–
I think this team at this very moment is a playoff team, but the way they play and the guys they have (along with the current coach) I don’t think they make it past the second round if they get that far.
–
I agree with bdl, make some in season changes and you can improve the team and they could go further (along with goalie play improvement).
It’s also disappointing that some posters are actually around MORE when they drop a couple or in a bad way over a weekend. Gotta start putting up some barbed wire to keep people off of that ledge.
Don’t like Rangers vs Pens in the first round because 1- They’ve yet to produce goals against Murray and 2- the Pens have the skill to expose their D. Washington didn’t scare me this year and they don’t scare me this year.
They’re deep but they can’t solve the trap. The 11-12 team was able to grind out wins. Much different team. That season still didn’t get them any farther than they’ve been and it probably shortened the careers of Staal and Girardi by about 3 years.
Good point
Dolan sucks
The LIRR sucks
Brother Jimmys sucks compared to the Penn Bar
Jerry Jones and a Jason Garrett suck
The Journal News sucks
Hanks off-center widows peak sucks
Wick, you guys were saying one-and-done when they went to the SCF.
You guys were also head over heels about this team when it was scoring five a game.
I agree there are flaws (just about every team has them, especially on defense … the best teams in the league have bad defensemen playing). I agree they have played like inconsistent garbage for a lot of the last two seasons. They are still one of the best teams in the league, despite their problems. Opponents and opposing coaches think so.
My biggest problem with AV (and the one reason I’d say his job could be at risk) is the same problem I had with him last year. He’s stubborn. He’ll bench the hell out of guys like Miller Kreider and Vesey but won’t sit guys like Klein, Girardi, Clendening. Klein could be playing hurt for all we know, Girardi wouldn’t be a 3-4 on the other top teams in the league but he’s a #2 guy here (yes, I said #2)…Staal is out. Can’t give Graves a look. No sir. But Brady Skeji gets to deal with growing pains game to game. It’s poor management to be like that. And it doesn’t require enough accountability.
Carp
Oh man…no way. If there is a way to look back on that group of posts from the cup run one poster was saying they’d beat the pens and go far even when they were down 3-1.
–
And I knew better about this one trick pony when they were scoring 5 a game (I know those posts are still viewable;))
–
Don’t forget wicky on the hate list.
Any truth to the rumor that Olivia Munn is Aaron Rodgers’ beard? Had Brad Richards not married a couple years ago, I might have thought that she was a serial beard.
I’ll defend Wicky here- not saying we see eye to eye on all points-but because I tend to understand where he’s coming from I’ll voice my two cents. It’s not about the winning. It’s about how beatable they are. (that sounds ridiculous, I know but hear me out)
There’s obviously more than one way to skin a cat here. At the end of the day I think it’s about having a team that’s tough to beat. They’re a top team. But their flaws as compared to some are more critical come post season. The inability to win faceoffs, allowing the opposition to stand untouched in the crease and screen the goalie night after night, shying away from physicality when there’s opponents trying to use it to beat you or wear you down….These are consistent issues. Yes, they win despite them some nights but the nights when they lose as a direct result of some of them make Wicky develop an uncontrollable twitch in his eye lol. Fans are the same as coaches, some believe the game is meant to be played a particular way and some are from a whole different school of philosophy.
It has been my experience that the very, (very) large percentage of organized hockey players are uber- competitive and disproportionately rough and tumble, to state it politely. To ice an entire large team of cheek-turners cannot be coincidence; it has to be the coach’s preferred and enforced attitude. I suppose he has his reasons, but it is sometimes hard to watch.
I have recently been sexted by Carlos Danger. Should I ignore the intrusion or does his wife still have influence with the Clintons? Though I am not yet totally on the balls of my ass, I could use a well-compensated position.
I keep looking for evidence, while watching games, of the Rangers getting pushed around physically, shying away from contact, getting beat and worn down, etc. and I don’t see it. True, they’re not taking stupid match penalties (a la Shaw), they’re not running around like Marchands (before he decided to be a scorer), and they’re not starting fights to get their bench-or the other bench-going. But they’re perfectly physical within the rules, as though that’s a bad thing. It’s the execution that’s sometimes piss-poor, vis. the horror-show minute in Montreal, a how-to tape of defensive miscues.
I guess you’re right Carp some of us shouldn’t be so negative! I mean what could possibly go wrong we did win 1 cup in 77 years nothing to be down about! Think positive what’s a soft goal now and then! We have as good a chance as anybody right? After all its only January!
The rationale of some here…well, I just don’t understand. As an example, to have your goalie “run” like in Dallas and to do nothing because “you might get an instigator (miller didn’t vs shaw) or lose out on a power play” is asinine to me.
It’s like a cop saying I’m not going after that criminal because he might hurt me.
Alex, to take nothing from what I said other than I’m wrong about Clendening’s playing time (the 7th defeseman) isn’t fair. You certainly aren’t dumb, you know what I’m talking about.
I have a good picture of her in her Eli Manning jersey too but she’s refusing to let me post it. Said something about wanting a Mason Crosby jersey next year :O
I did go back to read post Game-4 comments, Wick, and it’s true there was one optimistic poster, Miami! “iwicky” was talking up trades like everyone else. I was getting into it with Dudley, hoping Carrillo and Dorsett would benched for Game 5. Got half my wish, and Dorsett at least played less than 10.
Actually James I disagreed with a few other points
Kreider doesn’t sit for punishment. Vesey is playing way more games than he’s ever played so a couple off or some at 10 or 12 minutes is a good thing.
I agree about Klein likely playing hurt. I don’t think Girardi is number 2 defense even with him playing with McDonagh. Staal and Holden are certainly better than him.
“My biggest problem with AV (and the one reason I’d say his job could be at risk) is the same problem I had with him last year.
Ha, ok. I remember Miami talking about it being all good after game 4. I know a few picked us to win the series in the prediction thread. Seems to me there was a poster or two along the way over the course of that series that would remind everyone it was in the bag. But I guess I’m wrong since the link is apparently non existent on my phone.
Here’s another, post-Game 4: “Speed helps, but it can’t be all your team has. It has to have size, grit and will as well. Rangers don’t have a lot of the latter three and this series shows without the other three, speed is pretty useless.” Then they dropped the gritty Carcillo and won the series.
OK, fun’s over. I desist from the unfair quoting (so much fun, though!) Nobody but Miami was loving the Rangers at that point–even I was trading everyone–and it took Lundqvist standing on his head to pull it out. That and coos’ favorite moment in Rangers history, Richards’ GWG in Game 7.
In any event, it was a pain in the neck finding the old threads, but a fun trip down memory lane. Googled “rangers lohud may 7 2014” and proceeded to navigate around various archived items. Not even sure I could do it again.
“One poster was saying they’d beat the Pens and go far even when they were down 3-1” So far, it’s only Miami whom intrepid journalists have been able to discover holding that opinion. Rangers in 6, before the series began, is off topic. Where is that smoking-gun quote, curious readers want to know!
FWIW – was at Game 6, Mother’s Day, at MSG with the entire Family for what was a golden NYR fan moment given both the gravity of the situation (must win game!) and the Marty’s mother back story. When he scored in first, the rafters shook.
Damn! I was sure you wouldn’t find it! So now that we know you’re a grade-A Posey, even when down 3-1, who do bring in to become the next Pouliot? Dorsett? Richards?
That’s a lot of WTFs!

Repost 1-
The truth of the matter is that this D was overachieving for quite some time.

3rd and final repost:

There are some hot goalies, to be sure, but being hot in January, while better than the alternative, has not much to do with the playoffs. Imo, and some of may choose not to agree–to many of the losses suffered by the Rangers this season have been either due to (1) not being prepared to play, ie., “not showing up”, or (2) goaltending mediocrity.

There still can be crossover even if wild cards are from different divisions.

Do you take from Petet to pay Paul?

eric, that’s my opinion, not Gorton’s.
Pirri has one of the Rangers’ five fights this season. So they’re keeping him in for muscle. (the others: Kreider, Klein, Vesey, Miller).
Agree that it’s surprising Lindberg’s out. But if they want Pirri for PP shot (because nobody else will shoot), then it has to be Lindberg out.

Question: if AV is such a lousy coach, how is it that he has been so successful?
LikeLike
Norm,
I don’t think AV is a bad coach, I think he is agood coach.
LikeLiked by 2 people
The positive I see with AV are. He has brought the speed game. He has been willing to have rookies in the lineup. He does not allow the team to get to high, or low.
LikeLiked by 1 person

“Better than av” is a slick way to phrase that if you just want to throw out regular season wins stats as some sort of argument basis. Quite honestly I’m not sure because it depends on who’s available. I’d love to see cup winner Hartley here but that’s just an opinion of course.

LikeLike
After the one sided series the pens had against the Rangers in 2015, were they on the downside? No, they retooled, much like the Rangers this year. I won’t argue the D with you. It’s a definite weakness. The pens took till the middle of last season before they were able to retool. There is still time left for the Rangers to retool the D.

NYR made it to the Cup finals with 3 steady lines, a shaky D and a star goalie. The Eastern (let alone the Metro) is much, much better now than 3 seasons ago. Anything can happen in POs but would surprise me if a team like the Derbils made it in from the East this season.
LikeLike
My take on this year’s group and its coach: if AV can convince Miller, Kreider or Hayes–any or all of them–that they can be stars if they decide to make the necessary sacrifice, the team can go as far as it wants. Nash can help with that project, having been there. And Lundqvist needs to rediscover his art.
LikeLike

Respectfully, it isn’t absurd if a poster has been pointing out the same flaws consistently over the past couple of seasons (faceoffs for instance).
