Good news- they did it without their second most important player. Also, it looks like MZA, Zibanejad, and Nash maybe heating up at the right time.

I believe there is still a remote possibility they end up third in Metro if Columbus loses out ( with big goal differential), and NY wins out with the same. Could be wrong.

Look at the March/April regular season records of the cup winning teams in the last 5 or 6 seasons, need to be on a roll going in. The games do mean something.
It’s not “sounding like Norm” to recognize this is a very good hockey team. Away from this worst blog on the interwebs and its ofttimes picayune views of the players it allegedly supports, the Rangers are held in high regard. To sound like Norm, you need to raise the bar a bit: more snooty, more pompous, more–shall we say–Lady Byng. But enough of this–bring on the gibberish, I say. We need playoff-level gibberish if we’re to be ready for when we need it most.
I’m not saying they’re a bad team, just that they’ve been playing badly. Most importantly, their most expensive and most important player has had what can be called, at best, a mediocre season.
Interesting stuff, Wick, may look into it more later, but I did peek at the awful Rangers and dreaded Penguins going into the first round last year. Rangers 6-3-1, Pens 5-2-3 in the last ten games. I, too, bet it matters, but I’m not sure how much. I’d guess health is more important, and match-ups, but no data there either.

Was watching Montreal-Florida last night for scouting purposes. You have admire Jagr and his desire to play hocke at this age. I also recall right after Gretzky retired, someone mentioned that at that point Jagr would have to play till 50 in order to catch up with Gretzky. Well, he may actually play till 50. But he still won’t catch up.
A depressing morning of rain instead of snow and no hockey until tomorrow. Glad to see the NHL skip the Olympics. Was never supposed to be about pro athletes, Red Army team aside. The Olympics in general has become harder and harder to watch/enjoy/be interested in. Does Bettman secretly run the IOC too?
The novelty of pros in the Olympics has worn off. It will be interesting to see who plays in this one. May wind up being like the IIHF Worlds. Result depends on who plays.

I really don’t care about NHL players in the Olympics. The USA win in ’80 wouldn’t have been so special if it was NHL players playing. In looking at that Riley Sheahan twitter feed, there is something pretty typical about the fact that his only goal in over a year was against the NY Rangers. I am sure it was the game winner.

These posts are all about trying to get in the right mind-set and figure out who will be our whipping boy, who will be sainted, who we should be exposed in the expansion draft and who should not be traded. The correct answer is of course that everyone should be traded so this entire post is a moot point.

Also Carolina will be past us in a year or two. A lot of very good young defensemen there.

The posts here really start to count next week. I am anticipating some enlightened and brave NHL coach somewhere to be quoted as saying that the raw nuts and bolts of the game of hockey has NOT changed all that much and certain important basics adhered to and applied with vigor can bring you a Cup today just like it brought you one in 1940.
