  1. AV seemed peculiarly unfazed by the collapse at the end in his presser after the game. Hope he was a little more demonstrative when he spoke to the team. Multiple brain farts like those will be deadly in the playoffs.

  2. Good morning, boneheads!
A little scare at the end, but they got it done. And it’s nice to eliminate the Flyers at the same time.
Good news- they did it without their second most important player. Also, it looks like MZA, Zibanejad, and Nash maybe heating up at the right time.
The PK needs more work, and Hank is still not fully back.
I believe there is still a remote possibility they end up third in Metro if Columbus loses out ( with big goal differential), and NY wins out with the same. Could be wrong.

  3. ilb, not that it matters, due to how remote the possibility of any change occurring is, but I believe that is correct.

First tiebreaker: ROW (they would tie at 47)
Second Tiebreaker: Season points (would be tied at 2-2 because the fifth game wouldn’t count as it was an extra home game for Columbus)
    Third Tiebreaker: Goal Differential

  4. Guys… We are witnessing ONCE in a generation team! 2016-17 the New York Rangers! You should ALL be thankful these young, well paid athletes even bother to put on a uniform and win a SINGLE game at home in front of the people who pay their salary! I mean… so what that they keep every bubble team in a game constantly?! They showed up at the rink and that’s what counts the most! 🙂

  5. Dude’s team got hot at right time and cut right through the murder’s row of our league, James. It was impressive.

I will say, though, we had too much deadweight this year. About half the teams weren’t managed.

  6. Last 20 games NYR record: 9-11
    v PO teams: 3-6
    .
Tanks for the 1st WC slot but this team doesn’t seem to have the D to go far and Montreal is not that good either.
    .
Can’t believe they didn’t add a 2 way depth forward for bottom 6 AND there is nobody to bring up to help with that role.

  7. I’d say Minnesota and Calgary.

I’m also partial to the Kings. They allowed the least amount of goals in their conference without Quick for most of the year. I think they have the most well-rounded top 6.

  8. Some of you keep saying these games aren’t important and fairly meaningless win or lose since the rangers are in…I disagree.

Look at the March/April regular season records of the cup winning teams in the last 5 or 6 seasons, need to be on a roll going in. The games do mean something.

  9. It’s not “sounding like Norm” to recognize this is a very good hockey team. Away from this worst blog on the interwebs and its ofttimes picayune views of the players it allegedly supports, the Rangers are held in high regard. To sound like Norm, you need to raise the bar a bit: more snooty, more pompous, more–shall we say–Lady Byng. But enough of this–bring on the gibberish, I say. We need playoff-level gibberish if we’re to be ready for when we need it most.

  10. Interesting stuff, Wick, may look into it more later, but I did peek at the awful Rangers and dreaded Penguins going into the first round last year. Rangers 6-3-1, Pens 5-2-3 in the last ten games. I, too, bet it matters, but I’m not sure how much. I’d guess health is more important, and match-ups, but no data there either.

  11. Another 100+ points season. They stink!
I agree, they haven’t played well lately. But you can see some signs of improvement. In goal including. And I give their defense an edge comparing to Montreal’s. Plus, if WWeber is out for some time, make it a considerable edge.

  12. Let’s hope the record at the end doesn’t matter.; NYR has the 3rd fewest wins in Last 10 games in Eastern Conf.
    .
Me thinks WWeber has the same ‘injury’ as McD.

  14. This day in New York Rangers history, April 3rd 1997, the Rangers defeated the Boston Bruins 5-4 with Wayne Gretzky picking up the 2,700th point of his NHL career. He was 850 points ahead of Mr. Hockey Gordie Howe who was in 2nd place at that time. Gretzky finished his career with an incredible 2,857 points.

    Vintage hockey.

  15. This day in New York Rangers history, April 3rd 1928, the Rangers defeated the Boston Bruins 4-1 in Game 2 of a total goals semifinals series to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. This was the final Bruins game played in the Boston Arena. The arena is still is use and has been renovated several times. it is the oldest indoor ice hockey arena still being used for hockey and is the oldest multi-purpose athletic building still in use in the world. Opened in 1910 the Boston Arena is the only original home rink of the NHL’s original six franchises which is still in use as a hockey arena. The Rangers won the series 5 goals to 2 and met the Montreal Maroons in the finals. New York won the Stanley Cup defeating Montreal three games to two in the best of five series.

  16. 3 regulation wins in last 10 games is good?
    Tank you very much.
Hans stink, Sens are beat up and Boston ain’t all that.
Looking way ahead, beating 2 original 6 Canadian teams would be a hoot

  17. Good morning, boneheads!
Was watching Montreal-Florida last night for scouting purposes. You have admire Jagr and his desire to play hocke at this age. I also recall right after Gretzky retired, someone mentioned that at that point Jagr would have to play till 50 in order to catch up with Gretzky. Well, he may actually play till 50. But he still won’t catch up.

  18. A depressing morning of rain instead of snow and no hockey until tomorrow. Glad to see the NHL skip the Olympics. Was never supposed to be about pro athletes, Red Army team aside. The Olympics in general has become harder and harder to watch/enjoy/be interested in. Does Bettman secretly run the IOC too?

  19. GOOD MORNING VIET….wait…I mean BONEHEADS. You know this “easy” team the Rangers will play in the first round of the playoffs has more points than the Rangers. Just sayin’.

I don’t know what to think about this team. I really don’t think they have what it takes to win the Cup, but I don’t think they are lousy either. Chris Berman would probably say, “They…..could…..go…..most….of….the….way.”

I really don’t care about NHL players in the Olympics. The USA win in ’80 wouldn’t have been so special if it was NHL players playing. Maybe for a guy like John Tavares, he likes it so that he can finally play on a good team. I don’t know, but I’m glad they decided not to participate. Now, teams will have to decide what they are going to do if players want to play in it. What can they do?

  20. I have to say I have no problem with the NHL’s decision on the Olympics.
I don’t know how players feel but from a fan perspective my NHL teams players aren’t at risk and I get to enjoy the purity of non dream team hockey at the Olympics. It’s win-win

  21. HAHA no NHL players!! Maybe now the Great Britain team can repeat that 1936 gold medal triumph…..oh wait, what’s that? We didn’t qualify for 2018?

Get those NHL players back quickly!!

  22. In all seriousness though, if you think Ovechkin and a few other European NHL players won’t be there, dream on. Ovie8 will find a way, as will others.

  23. Its a very insular, extremely selfish decision by the owners and Bettman which does nothing for the sport as a whole or to advance the game into other countries or increase the NHL profile around the globe

  24. Wick since the Rangers get a number of their players from the college ranks, it’s just another way for Bettman to screw the Rangers. Keeping them from getting college players sooner. This whole Olympic thing is about shafting The NYR. You know I’m right!

  25. I know, no politics, but I hereby nominate myself as Vice President of the Bonehead Pollyanna Caucus. Our platform consists of rooting faithfully, mindlessly if necessary, for the home team, which last time I checked is the Rangers, apologies to Olga. We will serve Bonehead Nation by extolling the virtues of each and every Ranger, rather than carp on his faults (I said “carp”), and with our sheer optimism we will strive to lift each one up when and if he falls. If elected, my first act will be to renounce any previous negativity attached to my previous commentary concerning one Tanner Glass. If he ends up playing for some reason, I will blog-have his back. And when this overachieving team beats expectations and we see Mr. McDonagh skating around the rink with the Cup before handing it over to Henrik, our Pollyannish cheers will be full-throated, those of pure joy, untarnished by the guilt suffered by our opposition party, the half-heartedly cheering Told-Ya-So’s, whom I shall now proceed to demonize. Goes with the job, you understand.

The Told-Ya-So’s are tearing this Nation apart with their incessant carping (again!) and their way of life is transparent: to play it safe. If the Rangers lose (they won’t) we faithful will be crushed, having put all our Posie Eggs into one basket. We will be exposed, subject to ridicule by those who have warned us all year long that this team was a mirage, a one-trick pony, Charmin-soft, that its centers were third-rate, its defense a disaster, that it was at best a regular-season roster and not a very good one at that. On the night of the Rangers’ elimination, should it come (it won’t), they will cry out in all their glory, Yea, Verily, We Were Right All Along, I TOLD YOU SO! Then it’s out onto the ledge for celebratory cocktails and the loud excoriation of AV, Gorton, and any player whose stats come in under Gretzky level. And Sather, unless he’s gone. The gritty sound of new ones being ripped will echo down the canyons–the Rangers, who never had their own teammates’ backs, will have lost, and the Told-Ya-So’s will have won.

But we must fight the Told-Ya’s, and we must go on to the end. We shall fight them on the HAV, we shall fight them on Twitter if any of us know how to do that. We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength with each comment, we shall defend our Pollyannish island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight with sarcasm, we shall fight with mixed metaphors, we shall fight with straw horses and with cherry-picked stats, and we shall fight with the dreaded advanced hockey metrics if necessary; we shall never surrender.

  26. In looking at that Riley Sheahan twitter feed, there is something pretty typical about the fact that his only goal in over a year was against the NY Rangers. I am sure it was the game winner.

  27. The posts here really start to count next week. These posts are all about trying to get in the right mind-set and figure out who will be our whipping boy, who will be sainted, who we should be exposed in the expansion draft and who should not be traded. The correct answer is of course that everyone should be traded so this entire post is a moot point.

I am anticipating some enlightened and brave NHL coach somewhere to be quoted as saying that the raw nuts and bolts of the game of hockey has NOT changed all that much and certain important basics adhered to and applied with vigor can bring you a Cup today just like it brought you one in 1940.
