  1. if i were kreider and i had 15 team no trade clause this would be my list
with 5 wildcards – probably western teams due to travel

    columbus
    devs
    isles
    philly
    buff
    ottawa
    winnipeg
    calgary
    san jose
    seattle

i’ll take a shot at the 5 wildcards
    montreal – language
    vancouver – travel
utah – travel but has lots of cap space
    washington – getting much older
minnesota – dead money vs cap

  3. The cap hit to buyout Chytil is:

    0.5, 0.3, 1.4, 0.7, 0.7, 0.7 for a total over 4.5M over 6 years.

Any trade would have to involve less than 1.5M retained to be considered. As the cap is now expected to move upwards more regularly, the buyout seems to give them the most flexibility.

  4. A buyout of Chytil is in everyones best interest. His style of play does not fit with what they need. He is an injury risk on a team with not a lot of cap room. He appears to want to try to continue playing. Let him hook up with a team that will be willing to feature him and can absorb the hit if t he worst comes to pass.

  5. Beezle’d…

Lot less moves than folks think; Pres Cup winner, ECF finals.

    Dreary could be thinking:

Kakko potential break out playing on top line; Chytil as plan B

Miller plays with Schneids; keep away from Tuba

Jones for Gus; play with Tuba

re-sign Lindy to play with Fox

Othman up to play with Chytil 3C and Culleye on 3rd line; Goody as 3C Plan B

Edstrom up for 4C w Goody and Rempe, Vet FA low $$ signing to mentor big fellas.

prospect Dylan Roobroeck (22 yo; plays C 6’7″ 205) has shown skill in minors is a wild card.

  6. Whenburger was a 4.9M cap hit from 2017/18 thru 22/23. He was bought out by CBJ in 2020, then signed for one year with FLA for 2.25M. Next he signed the expiring three year contract with SEA for 4.5M per. I don’t think the UFA market will pay him more than 4, if anything 3.5M seems more likely.

  7. The center position is the challenge, but Roobroeck as a bottom six C option, most likely gets seasoning in Hartford for a season, but necessity may force Dreary’s hand; depends how they view Edstrom and/or Rempe as pivot options. Roobroeck had a break out year; very good on dot, can skate, has good hands and vision.

4th line of Edstrom-Roobroeck-Rempe would be too much fun to watch.

  8. Karl – Bread might have had the best hit of the playoffs v (Screw) Oshie in Round 1. Nobody gets a pass IMHO. You have to protect yourself and can’t shy away from contact. If need be use your stick and/or elbow a la Mess to the grill of attaching player.

  9. SN – if Drury pretty much stands pat then the best he’ll be looking at is another trip to the ECF but I suspect not even that far. Say what you will but the Filth were signficantly better than anyone expected last season. Carolina is not afraid to retool to get to the ECF. The asteroid may hit the earth and Toronto actually goes places. NJ and NYI should be more competitive as well. RedWings learn not to choke. I also think it is very fair to say the NYR got a fair amount of regular season luck with the comeback wins. Knock five wins off and they are the bubble team, not the NYI.

  11. Lucky for NYR that the Metro is really not that strong this season which inflated their position in the standings. Fla playing in tougher atlantic division forced mngt to build a roster to play against TB and Boston.

  12. While true that Kreider needs to give a list, I really think the odds of him being moved are very low. The last round sucked (for everyone pretty much) but he did have 8 goals in the playoffs, same as Tro and Laffy. 39 regular season goals is difficult to replace as well, and probably not happening at a 6.5M cap hit unless from within. Add in his ability on PK, just don’t see it happening.

  13. Not that I’m advocating for getting him but I suspect the market for Trevor Zegras has dropped quite a bit. Beyond the groin and ankle injuries, word is he’s been quite immature and “team” and “tough” may not be words he fully understands yet. 60+ points his first two full regular seasons, last year a bit of a disaster and only 31 games.

  14. Mika and Kreids not going anywhere for contractual reasons; Kreider is a relative bargain and Mika has a a full NTC and plays a position of organizational weakness.

What does need to change is what Mika does in offseason. The vegan DJ approach to his offseason activity is obviously not working. One reason Kreider has increased production in the later part of career is his commitment to offseason workouts. Laffy credited his improved play on increasing his working out in offseason to better prepare his body for the grind and improve his skating.

These guys are being paid a king’s ransom; it’s a full time gig, not just Sept – June.

  26. I simply don’t see how they overcome the lack of a 1C that cannot adjust to the playoffs and they need to produce at 5v5. Watching him lose 50/50 puck battles all over the ice, lazy efforts on line changes while the puck is in the neutral zone and on its way towards the Rangers blueline.. just not 1C material. There is no one in the prospect pool that has that big body, hard on pick mindset it seems to me. The lack of forecheck on that first line is telling, and it’s not just with Lavi being the bench. Brassard, not close in skill to Mika, figured out ways to bring it come playoffs. The mantra all over the rangers’ fandom and blogosphere is that mika just needs an elite RW for he and Kreider to succeed. I don’t see it.. also the belief that Grump Buchnevich with have solved that line’s ills is simply wrong. Don’t know the solution but have I felt even though the Rangers simply had no choice to resign Mika due to lack of org center depth, that the signing meant they’d never win a Cup with him as the 1C.

  27. Kreider produces on any line. Mika is the issue; he is not a traditional center; does not make his wings better, not a feeder. more of a freelancer who relishes open ice but cannot create it for himself. To Kreids credit, he has been able to be productive playing with Mika which NOBODY else has been able to save for Vatrano’s brief stint.

Mika had a del zasterours reg season, esp at even strength, yet Kreider (21) was third on team on ES goals following Bread (38) and Laffy (26), who played on same line with the teams’ best center. Mika had 27 ES assists, Tro 39.

Kreider had a nasty hit on Barkov which kept the Finn shaking his head on all 4s. He is not the Kreider of old; you are not going to get the steamrolling hits but also not the continual offsides and offensive zone penalties.

The failure is at the Drury level in not accepting that Chytil was not the style of player the roster needed for the foreseeable future. Instead my belief is he couldn’t part with a mid first rounder “because”. That’s not on Chytil at all.

  43. alex. He is the hightest paid center on the team. He rolls out for 6v5, O and D zone faceoffs, and is on PP1, at times taking FO. He AVGS just just under 1:30 in TOI to who I assume you think is the 1C. Mika has been here as a top center option and been pretty much the same ghost in the playoffs in the areas of the ice that matter most. Nut sure. Blame Chytil’s presence and Mikkola missing (who had a whopping 3 points in 31 games with the Rangers, 2 points in 7 PO games and 3 so far this season) as to why the Rangers are clearing out lockers.
There is no adjustment to criticism I need to make. This roster is flawed, and whether it means with or without Chytil moving forward, no one or two additions will move the needle. This “core” has shown repeatedly what they are and in my opinion will not change outcomes as they get older. Their roles need to be diminished or just replaced altogether. And that won’t happen easily or over the summer, either.

it is quite clear to most which is the 2nd line. and that is mika’s line. it’s not their fault that laffy and bread don’t seem capable of playing short handed. or that they’ve had no legit rw.

  48. I’m not a big fan of Miller, but I would give him one more shot. Lav and Drury need to tell him in exit interview that he needs to come back MUCH stronger and Nastier. Let him know if he doesn’t come back ready and willing to use his 6’5″ frame, he will be playing elsewhere before the end of the season.

Kakko’s value is in the trash. Since you can’t get much for him, you give him a mandate also. Learn how to drive the net, shoot and play in the paint or plan on playing elsewhere before end of season.

The Rangers have a lot of size on this roster, the problem is that most of them don’t use that size to their advantage. The will to really compete in tough games is not there.

  49. The other real issue is most teams know the book to defeat the Rangers. This team cannot handle an aggressive forecheck or aggressive PK. if they aren’t given time and space to make their fancy passes, they whimper away. Mika and Panarin are worst offenders. The lack of a decent PP unit almost cost them in Canes series and definitely cost them in Panthers series. The core needs to be changed, as that has been consistently bad in playoffs over last few years. Hate to say it, but I think Devils and Canes will be much better next year so don’t see the Rangers going as far as they did this year.

  51. Bobby – I partially disagree about Trouba. I thought that Trouba was their best defenseman in the first half of the season and then his play fell off. The fractured ankle explains a lot. If his ankle will heal properly and not have long lasting effect on his play, I would keep him because if he could play like he did in first half of season, that is what they need more of. If he goes you will need to replace his physical element and there aren’t many options out there to do that. Rangers defense needs to get much tougher to play against as Miller Gus and Fox don’t bring much in the way of physical play. The forwards also need to be much tougher to play against in order to help the defense and to keep the play in the other teams zone for a change..

  54. Drury, Lavy and the staff know hockey and know the team. They need to make an honest assessment of the players and the systems. No line or D pair was immune from being pinned down in their end and the 1-3-1 was like a screen door on a submarine. Drury can’t just go back to the clearance rack and tweak the roster and run it back. Those exit interviews should have included discussions of what each guy can do to make them better next year. Guys who were satisfied with the result may be candidates for moving elsewhere. Next season starts now.

Not suggesting that Lavi is a disaster, but for a guy that was said to be able to adjust on the fly, he sure didn’t do a lot of it beyond moving a deck chair now and then. You expect a team, especially a playoff bound team, to improve their execution as the season progresses but did we really see that with the Rangers this year? From my seat I saw the same problems and errors at the end of April that I saw in Oct-Dec.

Matthew has 2 100-point seasons, Brady has 3 30+ goal seasons in last 3 years and topped out at 83 points but playing for a bad team. The salary going and coming is not equal so they’d have to find maybe 2M elsewhere.

The irony is the ex Wolfpack coach is now the Oilers coach. The Rangers gave him up for nothing, even though Lav was the better choice. See this going 6 games Panthers, maybe 5. You can’t play pond hockey with a great offensive and even better defensive team. Besides it’s the USA vs. Canada.

  80. The season before the trade, Jeannot had scoring chances and was stout in front of the net; his inability to score was attributed to bad luck. But in his first games with the Lightning, he struggled mightily, then got injured right as he started to become comfortable with his new team.

Maybe cool the jets on Jeannot. Full story here If TBL give up on this guy (and his limited cap hit) after all they gave up to get him, that should set off the warning alarms. Danger Will Robinson, danger! And not to mention that TBL always seem to get the better of NYR on trades.

  81. St Pete eli & Old Ranger Fan. You guys are no where near the oldest. Watched my first Ranger Hockey game in 1951 on WPIX channel 11 TV. when I was 11 years old. Wally Hergesheimer was my favorite player, also Camille Henry. Lived at the old Garden on 49th st. with my GO card. They were off TV & radio for a long time in those years as Hockey was an adopted sport with a far smaller fan base. Thought this would be the year for me. The hard core of this team was totally out of gas after the Carolina series and Shesturken gave them a false sense of security. St. Pete eli you have 8 more years than me for another cup. USA vs Canada. Want the Puddy Cats to wipe the floor with those 2 super stars. It’s playoff hockey at it’s best a great offensive/defense team vs a Pond Hockey team. (See may earlier post)

  82. Tanner Jeannot has sucked in Tampa. What makes anyone think he would not suck in NY? I would not give up anything of value for him. I read that Carolina is shopping Guentzel’s rights too. I bet he goes back to Pittsburgh. Had the Rangers acquired him, he would be gone and so would the ransom they paid to get him.

  83. good question Pete! Will Canada get more calls or will the boys in stripes do thier usual swallowing of their whistles as the series progresses. Its not like Florida are a bunch of Lady Byng candidates….expect Bennett to be Public Enemy number one up north by mid week

  84. Dreary wants to go ‘heavier and more physical.’ Sez some of that will come from within the extended family. Seeks, too, a definitive productive wing for Zib, THE.

  86. I’d go 4×2.75-3.25M which buys two his UFA years. Otherwise don’t think he’s done much to earn above his $2.4M QO.

That’s less than the contract Gabe Vilardi is playing on, which he signed after his best season and probably expected to have more upside than kakko at this point.

  87. As fans we usually look at things player related, from the perspective of the team. Sometimes we need to look at it from the players perspective. If you are Kakko, do really sign for 4 more seasons of 3rd line RW?, giving up 2 UFA seasons? I wouldn’t. If I’m Kakko, I’m plotting my way out of here. I suspect Drury understands this. Which is why I think Kakko is gone.

  88. two more seasons of Trouba. I think you ride it out. Trading him, and paying him 4 million for the next 2 seasons, to play against you, makes little sense. You are going to have to replace him. Unless you are convinced it an upgrade, and not lateral, again makes little sense.

  89. If you can’t move Ziba, park him on the 3rd line and tell him he’s the checking center and place him with Cullye/Vesey and Goody. Give Laffy his powerplay time. If he doesn’t like it he can waive his no move.

  90. now Kreider, I have no doubt that you could trade without retention. But do really want to? 52.36,39. 10,6,8. Can you really replace that? Plus most likely, it would be in conference. No thank you.

  91. Trouba will most likley have the teams that could take his contract on his no trade –Utah/SJ etc… maybe Drury can eat only 2M if he sweetens deal but just don’t see it. Hes most likely a 3rd pair D …hopefully Jones mobility will help him

  92. thats where Drury has to figure something out/move a piece. Going with Chytil would be an option but they would need some form of insurance if he got hurt

  93. kakko doesn’t really have a great way out unless the rangers want to play ball. if he’s not willing to accept his QO or a team friendly deal with more term he’s getting his arb award and I don’t think that will be much more, which keeps him here another year or two at least?

  94. Does drury have secret, heavier and more physical players within the system we don’t know about? Rempe and Edstrom are not reshaping this roster as funny as that would be.

  95. Lone Ranger-I remember Camile Henry well. He was as good at tip ins as Kreider, but 80 lbs. lighter. Also Jack Evans, Bill Gadsby, Andy Hebenton, but Wally Hergesheimer is before my time. The GO card was one of the benefits of getting to high school. Ranger and Knick games for 50 cents. Those were some bad hockey teams. Did you play hall hockey between periods on the stairwells at the old Garden? We ocassionally missed the beginning of a period to finish our games.

  96. wwpd, that is certainly a way the Rangers could go about it. Keep him here for another season or two, but eventually Kakko is leaving. If you wait two seasons, it’s by his choice. If you do it now, it’s by Drury‘s choice, and he gets to choose where, and for what.

  97. Rempe changes the look of the team. Edstrom is Vanilla. He’s big, but adds very little else. I think Othmann’s style of play helps, and Berard energy helps. But in not sure that reshapes to roster.

  98. I think that arb award will be low, and I’d gamble trading him on the 2 year award rather than just moving his RFA rights. but I think he’s got value on the right deal and if he turns it around as a ranger then we get all the upside.

  99. I think the position that needs reshaping is LD. The left side is too small, and the one guy who has size, doesn’t play with edge. I think both Lindgren, and Miller are tradable commodities. I would trade both, but most certainly one of them. Use Jones to try and recoup some lost draft capital.

  100. IMO, players that should not be on the opening day roster. Chytil, Jones, & Miller. Trying to find a suitable RW for the The/DJ doesn’t solve the problem of Dajenabiz at center. Move him to RW and find a better center. Then a 3rd C for Cuylle & Krakko.

  101. are you guys under the impression that ROR is a physical player? In every category Zibanejad is a better player than ROR, and he’s younger.

  102. most logical teams on Kreider’s 15 team no trade list. Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Calgary. LA, SJ, Utah, Anaheim, Colorado, Vegas, and Seattle. And then one of, STL, Minn, Nash, Dallas, and Chi. So for arguments sake, Chicago.
That leaves the eastern conference, STL, Minn, Nashville, and Dallas. Who ya got, and for what.

  103. “We were talking about Laf at this time last year and refuting rumors that I was trying to trade him,” Drury said. “Kaapo Kakko is still a young player… We’re going to continue to try and find everything we can do to help him reach his potential.” 🤷‍♂️
